I am a huge Smith fan, and I love my IOs - I buy a new pair almost every season (just cause I like em and I get Pro Pricing). Even just a basic Ignitor & Sensor set up keeps me ready for 99% of conditions.

That being said, when I rode at Baker last year I had the Sensors in and I couldn't see a goddamn thing. It was snowing like 2" an hour, and with how wet it is up there I'm really not sure there's anything you could do. Maybe a clear lens?

I am so loving excited the season is upon us once more! Last year ended up being the perfect year for a down season, I don't know what kind of person decides that they want to snowboard less in any given year but that was me a season ago. It was mostly for financial reasons, and a desperate need for new gear, but the couple of times that I actually made it up made me feel not so bad. It was downright depressing up there, I've never seen the runs so rocky in my life. Hopefully this year Mother Nature can get her poo poo together.

Priority #1 for me is boots. I'm probably going to look at some today, but I'm really sketchy about buying them. The best (as in most comfortable) pair of boots I've ever owned were gifted to me, without me ever having tried them on first. Second best fit was a pair of DCs that I bought online, again never tried them on first, and second best here is by default as they didn't fit very well at all. I bought my worst fitting pair of boots last year, at a shop with a person helping me. I understand they are supposed to be snug and all that, but the Salomons that he sold me made me absolutely miserable. They only saw about a half a days use before they got tossed into the trunk of my Jeep, traded out for the still uncomfortable but at least roomy DCs. lovely boots are killing my passion for snowboarding. It wasn't always like this, I can remember a time when I didn't even think about how my feet felt.

Going to Loveland next Saturday for my buddy's birthday. Is it still too early to be hopeful about open blacks?

Some of these are kinda weird. Especially Ogden. Like, it's a cool suburb and all, but it's still pretty much a suburb. I don't want to hate on Ogden as I've been told it's a great place to live and I can tell you firsthand Snowbasin is a fantastic and super-underappreciated area, but in the top 4 total without the annual of the Cottonwoods? Eh...

A lot of these make sense, although I'm interested in the rationale behind the high ranking of Rossland/Nelson, Girdwood, and Bellingham. For them to surpass Jackson, Bend, Mammoth, and a bunch of others will be interesting to read about. Also Sandpoint as 9/32? Uh, Schweitzer is cool I guess? Looked pretty bleak when I considered doing a 3 day trip there last year.

The initial seeding is most likely like this: starting in the upper left and most likely going counterclockwise with normal direct elimination bracket seeding. So in the top 32 list, it would be 1. Revvie, 2. Rossland/Nelson, 3. Bozeman, 4. Ogden, 5. Girdwood, 6. Bellingham, etc.

I've owned Oakley Crowbars for the last couple years, first with the regular persimmon lens and now have custom made goggles with the high-intensity persimmon lens. Either the high-intensity persimmon or yellow lenses will be good for still being able to see in low light, plus these goggles are the most comfortable brand I've ever worn.

Sounds like you're in Tahoe, so it'd be a pricey trip. But it's fun - you get the deals and free shwag while you're there. Plus everyone in the industry is drunk for like 3 straight days, which is seriously entertaining. Also, if you say you're "freelance media" (run a blog or something) you get in for free. Adding to what others have said, your first few days involve a lot of falling down & the conditions (as well as instruction received) probably didn't help. Try again earlier in the year, and see if you can ensure you get a coach with at least a Level 1 certification from AASI (Level 2 preferred). L1's are pretty easy to get, but an L2 shows greater commitment to teaching & the success of students, and the coach is much, much more likely to have more depth of experience to draw on.

I am looking at getting my wife a new board. She has a pretty nice Solomon board that is about 4 years old now. It is a full camber and she really likes it. I am thinking that she could use a rocker or a hybrid rocker since we are in Colorado now. I will do anything to invoke the please of the snow Gods at this point. The trouble I am having is figuring out what is good and not so much on the women's side.

I have just been looking on dogfunk to get some ideas.

This arbor board looks pretty good, the progressively less rockered board seems like a good idea. Probably get a 147cm.

This never summer also looks pretty nice with the rocker under foot and the camber at the tips. Probably get a 146cm.

There is also a roxy board but it has magne and I don't really like my lib with it so I don't think I will go that route.

Do you have to go in December? Early-season trips are always more risky because there is a greater likelihood that it won't snow enough before you go to cover all the good terrain. Additionally, the week between Christmas and New Years is the busiest week at most ski resorts, so prices and crowds tend to be at their worst.

But if you have to go in December, Whistler is more reliable for early season snowfall than most. However, I have no clue if places will take reservations or give deals for a trip more than a year in advance.

It may just be the 'yay new gear' thing that's doing it but she's certainly faster on it than her old board. Even as a beginner, coverage matters if it's really bad, which it certainly can be early in the year. Bad coverage forces everyone onto the groomers, making an already busy holiday season feel even more congested.

But anyway, Whistler is a good choice for this kind of thing. I'd say just keep your eyes out for deals over the next six months, cause that is peak season as far as prices go.

I've got 2 years of snowboard experience here in AK, but the amount of times I've actually gone probably amount to less than a full season. I can actually count on one hand how many times I went last year. Anyways, I can make it down the hill well enough not to look like a dweeb and take every opportunity I can to take jumps. I can land 180s pretty effortlessly, but this is where my main problem comes in. Riding switch (goofy for me) freaks me out if I'm going at an uncomfortable speed. It always feels like I have to deliberately "push" the tail of my board to the side whenever I make a turn, and thinking back on it, I'm pretty sure I lean back quite a bit out of fear. Is this something that should just correct itself with practice, or some bad habit I should watch out for and correct?

And here's a a nitpicky/cosmetic question: Do I look like a total n000b idiot if I have the toe strap pointing upwards, perpendicular to the board? Or should it be angled diagonally so that it cups the curve of my boot? I've seen people do it both ways, and I'm paranoid it's some "weed out the newbies" type thing that allows bro dudes to snicker at me behind my back.

Actually it's "Cali & PNW" in the OP, though I think those two ought to be separated honestly. The purpose of that section of the OP is (as far as I understand) to help people find snow goons near them, and California and the PNW are pretty distinct regions. Vancouver/Seattle/Portland goons might be likely to meet up to shred, as would Tahoe/Mammoth/Socal people. But I don't see Tahoe people meeting up with Seattle folks, for example, as any more likely than say, Tahoe and Utah people.

But this is the gooniest of nitpicks so whatever.

Bindings permitting you want it cupping the toe of the boot. With some binding/boot combos it's going to slip off the toe and over the boot like that. As for a weed out the newbies thing... the binding thing is not something that anyone really pays attention to. Just make sure you don't have a gaper gap and demonstrate good etiquette and no one will give you poo poo for being a beginner.

Switch is hard at first. Just keep making an effort to ride switch for a few turns when you're on easy runs throughout the day and you'll get it sooner or later.

I would recommend the NS. I've been super happy with mine (10-11 Evo) and really like the hybrid profile & Vario Grip sidecut. NS also offers a 3yr warranty whereas most manufacturers only offer a 2yr.

Also recommending NS. They make solid boards you will be happy with.

Sorry CO didnt work out DV. You could always come out to Cali. Theres plenty of work out here and In N Out starts at $10/hr.

Finally grabbed an Epic pass. CO needs to get good snow this year so its worth heading out for a month.
