Got my trip to Les Deux Alps booked for Feb/Mar next year and I CANNOT WAIT! I'm so excited, I didn't get to go away this last season and not being in the mountains has killed me. I'm taking my own boots and planning to rent a variety of different ski's when I go. Normal a couple of days, twin-tips a couple and a day of blades to treat myself. I'm saving the blades for last so I dont injure myself until I have to go home. I've never really been able to get the hang of switch. I'm thinkin its because I've been using standard ski's instead of twin tips. Any pro-tips from any of the more advanced freestylers out there? Here's an image from one of the best days of my life. La Flegere on Christmas Day ![]() edit: new page, woo! Not a bad way to start it

TheChaosDunk posted:Riding switch (goofy for me) freaks me out if I'm going at an uncomfortable speed. It always feels like I have to deliberately "push" the tail of my board to the side whenever I make a turn, and thinking back on it, I'm pretty sure I lean back quite a bit out of fear. Is this something that should just correct itself with practice, or some bad habit I should watch out for and correct? If you are using your back leg to push the board sideways, your mechanics are off, which probably contributes to your unease. I unfortunately only have internet access through my phone for another couple of weeks so I can't get into it too much, but read up on the bit about completing your turns in DV's posts on the first page. That will help you control your speed. A lesson could help with the rest of the mechanics, mainly not using your back foot to push the board sideways. Practice will also help get you more comfortable, helping eliminate the leaning back issue. TheChaosDunk posted:And here's a a nitpicky/cosmetic question: Do I look like a total n000b idiot if I have the toe strap pointing upwards, perpendicular to the board? Or should it be angled diagonally so that it cups the curve of my boot? I've seen people do it both ways, and I'm paranoid it's some "weed out the newbies" type thing that allows bro dudes to snicker at me behind my back. Practically all new bindings have combo straps at the toe that can be used either way. Most people seem to like doing the over the toe thing, but I personally hate doing it that way as they never stay due to my small feet. I prefer putting it over the foot much better. Basically do whatever works for you, there is no right way.

I found really emphasizing turning my head to look where I want to go helped switch. Your leading knee needs to do the work so make sure you are using it. Kind of push it in the direction you want to go.

I gave Torstein Horgmo some money for his new documentary film of his life the past couple years. It's awesome, and hilarious. And if you don't know who he is by now, you suck, so get his movie: Horgasm - A Love Story

Growing up, my parents would take the family on a ski vacation to Colorado or New Mexico nearly every winter. It's been a good 6 years since my last visit I miss the snow and the GO FAST feeling. I'm feeling motivated to do a thing and get myself on a mountain this winter, but none of my friends seem to give a poo poo and none of my family wants to go, so it'd be all on me. What would it take (in terms of money and logistics) for me, being a poor student in Austin, TX, to find something to ski over winter break? It so goony to ask, but spending a few days skiing solo would be pretty depressing - how easy is it to find a group of people to ski with? I would think that other people might be in the same position of being alone on vacation, but Richard M Nixon fucked around with this message at Nov 2, 2012 around 20:53 |

Lots of schools have student clubs that organize group trips for discounts, particularly over winter break. For example, the All Cal is an annual trip organized by clubs from 8 California schools. Of course, that is an extreme example that by all accounts is a complete poo poo-show. edit: beaten bawfuls fucked around with this message at Nov 2, 2012 around 21:25 |

So how do Asian fit goggles differ compared to regular ones? Like are they shaped differently or do they just use extra paddings at points? Need a new helmet/goggle and I think I'll get smith vantage and I/o but can't find any Asian fit goggles to try on locally

Someone told me that Aspen was going to have mobile on-mountain bars this season. Are there any Aspen/Snowmass goons that can confirm/deny? That just sounds like an insurance nightmare waiting to happen.

Mammoth does this with a "burrito cat."

I'm an Aspen local and I think I vaguely remember hearing something about "mobile bars" and it definitely wouldn't be unheard of for this place. Last year they had "pop up" champagne bars on Aspen mountain selling $20 flutes of Veuve-Clicquot and poo poo like that. Basically they'd just set up your typical catering bar tent at the top or bottom of some blue groomer to attract tourists who suck at skiing and have money to burn. So yeah maybe that's what the person you talked to was referring to. I don't know anyone who went to one.

Yay the snowboarding & skiing thread is back! I can't wait for the season this year. It feels like I haven't been on my snowboard in ages. Last year the snow was poo poo here in New England so I only made a handful of trips up to NH and Vermont, and the year before I sprained my ankle and missed the last two months of the season. I mean I guess I've still advanced a bit in the last few years, but I'm still fairly new to the sport. This will only be my fourth year of snowboarding, so I feel like I really need to get out and ride some more or I'm probably going to get worse, not better. Also I spent a bunch of money on new (used) gear at the big North Conway tent sale this summer and I can't have it go to waste. Either way, I NEED SNOW IMMEDIATELY. Give to me your snow.

Ski goon checking in. My buddies and I are buying a house in VT hopefully by December since we're sick of 3+ hour drives (each way) 30+ times a year. I watched this ski film last night All.I.Can in the spirit of getting pumped for the season and it blew me away. Some of the best filmed skiing I've ever seen mixed with beautiful editing and a great environmentalist message that nicely broke up the action. Check it out.

I love bombing down groomed runs, but this year I've decided to buy powder skis to see what all the fuss is about. I've settled on Rossignol S7s because they seem to be universally recommended as far as powder skis go. I can't decide what bindings to get though beyond something that will just fit. I'm not even sure it matters. Anyone have advice on ski bindings? The Rossy website recommends their own Axial 2 120s.

I have the axial2 120's and they work great if you don't need a super high DIN binding. The other binding I see recommended a lot is the Rossi/Look FKS 140. The FKS is quite a bit more durable of a binding, not that the axials are weak or anything.

washow posted:drat white people! I got the asian fit splices and wear them with an Airhole facemask which plugs up the hole quite nicely. They for sure fit a lot better than the regular splices. It's not really a smaller goggle, they have more nose padding and it's bent slightly differently, the regular splice lenses work for the asian fit splice (which is good because I have a big head and require the larger size of the goggle)

Skiing switch is pretty difficult to get the hang of and if you only ski 1 week a season i would recommend spending your time enjoying other things, but if your hellbent on the idea then the only tips i would give are when learning always look down the hill, look over your left shoulder when turning left and the opposite for turning right. It can help to scissor your legs (more so than you might when skiing forwards) this should help initiate turns. So when turning right you want to be looking over your right shoulder with your left leg in front. Remember to look where you are going so you don't crash into anybody. And finally most important of all. Don't rent ski blades.
