Any reason not to look at blades, I've only rented them a couple of times and they were a blast. Is it that rentals are usually crap quality and it's worth buying? Because I'd consider that.

Snow blades get a hard time in this thread (and ammongst experienced skiers) because they don't work in powder and aren't fast on piste. But if you enjoy them then go for it. Also rentals will be fine.

Also if you take a spill in em you're more likely to seriously injure something 'cuz of the stronger bindings. Plus come on, you know they would've been used by the evil captain of the ski team in Better Off Dead if they were invented back then

Ghetto Blaster posted:Skiing switch is pretty difficult to get the hang of and if you only ski 1 week a season i would recommend spending your time enjoying other things, but if your hellbent on the idea then the only tips i would give are when learning always look down the hill, look over your left shoulder when turning left and the opposite for turning right. It can help to scissor your legs (more so than you might when skiing forwards) this should help initiate turns. As for ski blades, I have to echo what's been already said. First off, never use any that do not have fully releasable bindings because they are extremely dangerous otherwise. Three words: compound spiral fracture. But more importantly, I think your potential for fun in the long run is increased if you avoid them. Like Ghetto Blaster mentioned, they pretty much prevent some of the most fun kinds of skiing. I have always had more fun by pushing myself to improve a little bit. Powder is of course a challenge and has a real learning curve, but with modern equipment the barrier to entry into that wonderful white world is lower than ever. And off piste skiing in general can be extremely rewarding. It is fun to scope a new challenge from the lift with your friends and then muster the courage to try it. This is the kind of thing that I find much more rewarding than just cruising around on comfortable groomers all day to enjoy the view. I enjoy that kind of cruising too, (excellent hangover activity BTW) but ultimately if I'm not challenging myself a little in some way, its just not that interesting for very long. So that's my early season rant I guess, and it goes for everyone. Try some new things this year. Take a few park laps (another activity that ski blades limit due to their small size and instability). Learn to ski switch on mellow groomers. Take a lesson one day if you haven't in awhile, most people would be surprised at all the bad habits one good lesson can help you kick. Push yourself to ski something new off piste. Ski more pow. ALWAYS ski more pow, it NEVER gets old and it truly gets more fun the more you do it and the better you get at it. Edit: whoops, that got a little longer than I anticipated bawfuls fucked around with this message at Nov 3, 2012 around 18:30 |

Bought a Bataleon Whatever this summer, before they brought out the new designs so I got it megacheap. Only used it on indoor slopes so far, I never thought it would be possible to dearly love a plank of wood but apparently it's possible. We're getting married in January somewhere in the Alps. I cannot wait to get this on the mountain after schlepping it on rental boards for so long. Bataleon, ho!

Well, the FIS won't let Lindsey Vonn race with the men at LL this month. I guess this sort of fits in with the rest of their organization's strategy to continue pretending it's 1976.

bawfuls posted:To be fair, there is a non-misogynistic argument against letting her race there. Technically, it could give her an advantage on the women's circuit, as she would get a chance to ski the Lake Louise course 6 days before the rest of the field of women do. That is explicitly against FIS rules iirc. You could argue she'll win the women's event anyway (never a sure thing), but even still if she wins by a larger margin that gives her an advantage on the season. They were never going to let her run both races anyway. She would have had to forfeit the women's points if she ran the men's race, since you're right that it broke the rules of the women's race. I'm pretty sure her plan was to run the men's race and forfeit the women's. It's why NBC was pretty pissed at it too, since they've been advertising VONN VONN VONN for all their women's coverage. edit: Besides, they could have gone "fine, you can run the men's course, but you forfeit the women's." Just remember encouraging someone to go ski off piste in Europe is a hell of a lot different than skiing ungroomed / in area stuff in the states. In Europe there is generally very little in the way of avalanche control done and large fees involved for rescues.

As I am now officially an Ottawa Goon, go ahead and add me for Mont Ste Marie, and Mont Tremblant. If anyone else resides in the general area, I'm definitely looking at other options within 2-3 hours. I'm pretty stoked for this season. In my old city I had to travel 2 hours just for 500ft vert. Here's hoping for snow!

So it's going to be writing in the morning, boarding in the afternoon, job searching in the evening. Oh and funny thing, my niece is in her second year in college (San Francisco) and she's coming out to visit us (my wife and I)... for three weeks starting at the end of December. I warned her that it's going to be cold and wet but she insisted. She grew up in southern California so I don't think she knows what 45/35 high/low with almost constant drizzle is like. I told her I'd take her snowboarding but she's scared she'll break something. I'll wait till she's had a couple days of cloudy/rainy weather and see if she changes her mind. Snow sports is just about the only thing you can do for fun in Dec/Jan in the PNW (besides marathoning movies and tv shows).

From my understanding Silverton does not require anything in between January and April or so. You can rent everything on the mountain including the guide. The non guided period is before and after that.

you don't need touring equipment for silverton. it's all boot pack or heli access, i have been there numerous times and have never seen anyone skinning. also i'll never go there again during the unguided season. compared to going during the guided season, it sucks.
