Absolut Awful

I just did an on-snow test of the BoomPro, a helmet mount GoPro boom, for a guy on Kickstarter.

Pretty rad little attachment. I don't think I would be keen to ride around a resort with it on, but there's some real potential for filming.

It is definitely a little ungainly. Nearly impossible to walk through a door, for example. The prototype I have is heavier than the final product will be, and the final will be a bit longer, which is good, because the camera is just a little too close with the prototype. The Hero3 will also make things better thanks to its reduced weight.

Here's the Kickstarter: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects...r-gopro-cameras

This was Sugar Bowl near Tahoe. The snowmaking manager got fired this Summer though. I guess he screwed up a lot.

Awesome storm going up there now though, just got home driving through a blizzard. Boreal is saying they are 90% going to open on Saturday. It is supposed to get down to 4*F Saturday morning in Truckee so the snow should hopefully stay for awhile.

This is loving hilarious. Never heard about this, but I haven't ridden sugar bowl in a while. I'm down in the foothills and it's finally cold and rainy down here. Hoping this storm will get things rolling for the big resorts.

Checking in to say hi as usual. I'm always down for a little company mid-week at Lake Louise or Sunshine, also my home mountain Castle Mountain (http://www.skicastle.ca/) is getting closer to it's opening date.

Can't even stop thinking about this season, it's been snowing non-stop for 2 days in Calgary and we've probably had close to 15-20cm of snow over the past two days. Bring on the pow.

Still need some more snow in West/North Van. Here's what it looks like up at Cypress.

Oh and could I please be added to the Canada/PNW list? I'm in Vancouver and mostly ride at Cypress but take the occasional trips out to Whistler and Baker. Thanks!

Can I get added to the Canada list as well? I will be mostly skiing the Vancouver mountains, but also have trips planned to Whistler and the Interior already.

Speaking of, SilverStar definitely haven't opened their cross country skiing today as they had planned.

But yeah, the Vancouver mountains are supposed to get snow this weekend THANK GOD.

I'm in the South-ice Coast (gently caress last year was terrible), have my own gear, and actually have more than enough money to eat ramen. I have somewhere around 7 days of snowboarding under my belt and I actually want to get out as much as possible this year.

I have tentative plans to go to Snowshoe (WV) for 5 straight days in February, but I want to be able to thoroughly enjoy myself over that week. Whenever the local (read: 3+ hour drive) mountains start blowing and have a decent base down, I'll try to cut out of work and spend a few days/weekends up on the slopes. I am comfortable on greens, and I can make my way down blues; however, I am not comfortable with taking them at anything that resembles speed.

Should I look into blowing a few hundred bucks on getting an all-day lesson with an instructor and just try to build up my technique, confidence and experience? I think it's close to $400 for a 6-hour lesson at Wintergreen (VA).

What's a good snow forecast app for android? Right now I have ski report. It gets info from onthesnow.com. the app is nice, but I don't know forecasting enough to know if I'm getting good info.

It lets me mark favorite resorts weather and grab resort maps.. anything better?

Maybe we should just, like, hang out at a resort one day because I'm in WV now

It sounds like you just need more time and experience, especially if you have 7 days lifetime under your belt. I think it would be best for you to get a couple days in and take a lesson around the early-to-middle portion of the second day. Give yourself some time to get back into riding for the season and catch up to your old stumbling blocks (level of competence) AND THEN take a lesson. An all-day lesson will be really draining on you and the instructor, I wouldn't really recommend more than 2-3 hours of private instruction. You need to consider that the instructor might suck (ie limited experience or can't teach to your learning style) or you simply may not like them (and a good instructor can usually circumvent this).

List updates going down tomorrow.

That's a private lesson rate. Look into group lessons, at your level you'll probably still benefit quite a lot from those.

A single lesson with an instructor will help, even more so with the right instructor, but you probably don't need a 6 hour lesson. I took a two hour lesson cause I could cover most of the things I was having trouble with and then practice when we were done while it was still fresh in my mind and no one was holding my hand. Even though it was a two hour lesson the instructor was a little surprised that we just went two hours straight without a break. With a 6 hour lesson you will probably have a lot of wasted time, I just don't see how it is worth it.

Eejit is right though, you don't need a ton of one on one time for the basics.

Oh snap!~~~ I hear that Snowshoe Mtn in WV is the best it gets around this area.

I've done a few beginner and intermediate group lessons, and I'll probably give the intermediate one a shot again next time I go. Good to know that doing a 6 hour is probably not the best of ideas (my wallet thanks you).

Also not saying this is definitely going to be the case for you, but sometimes the group lessons have like no one in them and it's basically a private lesson anyways.

I took an advanced level group lesson last year, a three day thing, over Spring Break and there were literally only two of us in the group. It was amazing. My mom was in the intermediate group, and it was just her and the wife of the other dude in my group. We basically got three half days of private instruction for like $300.

My husband was in the beginners snowboarding thing doing single-day lessons for the three days as well, and the most he ever had in a group was three people. He asked his instructor and the guy said as long as they have two people, they make money, so they will definitely run the lesson, and sometimes they'll even do it if there's only one person out of goodwill, that sort of thing.

I grew up doing all-day ski school, which I know is half babysitting, but I also gained a lot from it. A good school will sort you into the right skill groups and a good instructor will always be pushing your bounds. Just riding with someone who knows how to keep you always testing your limits without pushing too far will help you a lot. Plus you get corrected all day which really does help eliminate bad habits.

From what I've been seeing, an all day group lesson might be ~$200 and might include a lift ticket.

I'm not saying its a total waste, I spent a lot of time in ski school when I was too young to remember it. I just think the money could be better spent. Personally I don't like to learn all at once for 6 hours at a time but everything depends on the person. If it was my first day I would absolutely be in a 4 hour lesson.

The thing that went "parp" went "parp".

This is my first full season living in Denver and my first full season of boarding. I really hope it's better than last year. I only got to go 5 times or so last year splitting between Vancouver and Denver. I'm thinking of getting a season pass for Loveland cause I'm still only barely able to do blues and it's less crowded and closer that the rest of the I-70 resorts. I don't think I'll get enough out of an Epic pass to justify it yet.

I might try to get out next Sunday if the runs I can actually do are open. Right now it's just one chair and all the really boring greens.
