OldMidgetWillow, those look fine. Since you've bought them with background dots, you can treat them as more or less a permanent retinue. Individual mooks will get splattered, and probably with some regularity, but you'll be able to continuously "recruit" replacements at no cost beyond downtime. Mighty Dicktron, much as I hate to do this it's been over a month since you last posted and I've gotta put my foot down. If you're going to stay with this, please post within the next week or I'll assume you've dropped.

So, the plan thus far: 1. - Stash the boats somewhere nice and cozy, ready to spring into action on a moment's notice. 2. - A Two-Front recon expedition. 2.A - Jungle Team -> Head to the distress beacon and locate surviving cultists. Watcher, Damnation, Ceaseless, Butterfly, (Rainbow and/or Jackal?), Never 2.B - Urban Team -> Head to the cities, gather support and supplies. Wyrm, Poem, Onyx, (Other of Rainbow or Jackal), Rose & Auling Things to keep in mind - Determine the extent and intensity of the infestation, how much it's infiltrated settlements or jungle at large will inform strategy. Avoid alerting Tide for as long as is advantageous. Use this crisis to build as much rage as possible towards the Order and the Realm. Hey Thesaurasaurus, I am going to have to bow out. I feel like I haven't been (because I haven't) a good contributor to the game. That is, I haven't been able to find the time to post on a daily, or even a weekly basis. I usually try to keep up a standard of not being THAT GUY that updates only once a week, and I am failing that due to exterior stuff. I know how that is being a GM myself, and it sucks. I think I may be better off just reading from the sidelines. Sorry.

I wrote this. It is Abyssal Past Lives, which is made to use some of the Infernal Past Lives background and some of the Whispers background to create something which fits Abyssals. I think it is cool and want to talk to Thes about using it. Abyssal Past Lives Every Abyssal bears the stain of the Neverborn upon her soul and Essence. Yet, every Abyssal Exaltation is still a Solar Exaltation. There have been others before, and not all of these others bear the same stench. The Neverborn are not kind gods, but unknowable horrors who hate their Exalted only marginally less than they hate their enemies. If Abyssals can be in touch with their Exaltation to the point where they hear the voices of the unknowable and drown their minds in unspeakable wihspers, it must be within their power to know the Solars they once were which still live on inside them, burning with the same heat as they would in any living body. As a Background, an Abyssal’s Past Lives rating represents her communion of the Solars she once was and perhaps may still be. It grants multiple capabilities. • The potency of First Age memories to which the character has access is governed by the Past Life Background. A number of times per story equal to her Essence rating, the Prince can add dice equal to her Past Life rating to any dice pool by drawing upon the specific memories of her prior life, the life of an ancient Solar who likely had at least a passing familiarity with nearly every field of human endeavor that existed at the time. However, if the player exceeds her Dodge MDV with the total number of successes on the action, the Neverborn produce a backlash as though it was her first sin of life, and she rolls Essence to determine the number of Resonance points gained. Secondly, the player must include a nice flashback detailing a similar situation or use of ability by a previous incarnation. • Every Solar Exalted shard is as old as the Primordial War. One’s past incarnations are privy to knowledge of ancient secrets lost to Creation’s greatest sages. If the player spends a willpower, the character can glean clues and other information from the lives of her past incarnations if the player succeeds at a (Perception + Past Lives) roll. More successes yield clearer and more extensive information. The effective number of successes may not exceed the character’s Past Lives rating (excess successes are wasted). Failure results in distorted or out-of-context information that leads the character astray. Storytellers might consider making the rolls in secret so players can’t ever completely trust the results. Queries outside the purview of one’s Past Lives result in automatic failure, but do not cost an expenditure of Willpower. Open-ended questions such as, “What is my purpose?” are a perfectly reasonable way to trigger a Storyteller-directed vision. Inquiries into the future or present can reveal only what one’s past incarnations want or believe to be the case, not definite facts. Even when incorrect, however, a past incarnation’s beliefs about the future and present can provide valuable hints towards finding the truth. A character can use Past Lives as a guide to where a previous incarnation believes her actions could find answers to questions, unfinished business, or items of power relevant to the character’s current predicament. She attunes herself to the incarnation and lets them lead her where they will. Usually, the vision leads the player to a place and time where, if she acts as her past incarnation would have acted, she achieves an outcome that incarnation desires. (This use of Past Lives is an invitation to the Storyteller to provide a short side-adventure or a preliminary adventure to gain an advantage in resolving a larger arc.) • A character’s presence at significant events or in the presence of certain things that directly relate to one’s past incarnations may trigger a reflexive roll to receive a vision explaining the relationship, but these undirected visions are Storyteller-controlled plot devices and do not cost Willpower. In particular, the first meaningful interaction with an individual such that they or their Exaltation has interacted with a past incarnation of a character should allow for a reflexive roll to glean information about their past relationship. Trait Effects: X Your character has no internal sense she has ever been anything but an Abyssal. • Your character hears the faint murmur of dead Solars from time to time. These murmurs provide fragmentary clues heavily cloaked in metaphor and symbolism, all true but rarely understood except in hindsight. She is generally unaware of who her past incarnations were. •• Your character sometimes feels a crawling sensation at the base of her skull, the Past trying to tell her something, but its depictions are either vague and indistinct or surreal and fanciful. These wandering glimpses of the past provide supernatural insight and hunches, effectively allowing players to get clues from the Storyteller on how to put known information together to address the question at hand without receiving a straight answer. The character’s visions are incomplete, but often fill in critical details the character might have missed. These visions aren’t enough to answer the question outright, but they certainly provide a good foundation to begin an investigation or find a new lead in the absence of other evidence. She knows the names and life stories of the past incarnations who speak to her, but there are still missing memories and gaps in the timeline. •••• Your character is, at times, not sure whether she is her present or her past self. Visions are mostly complete and either use literal depictions or obvious symbols. This level of contact can answer many questions outright, but does not provide supplementary information to expand the inquiry beyond the actual wording of the question, nor do these glimpses explore other points of view or any indirect connections. While powerful, an Abyssal who relies on this level of Past Lives frequently is at severe risk of angering her Neverborn masters and may draw the attention of her past incarnations’ allies and enemies; There is no telling how these characters will react when they see what has become of the Solar Exaltation they once knew. However, the Abyssal is better equipped to handle this, for the lives and times of her progenitors are clear in her mind and only the best-kept secrets and most minute details are still out of reach. ••••• Your character has transcended Oblivion and its attempts to unmake the people you were. The lives of your past incarnations are agonizingly clear, revealing subtle contextual details and tangentially related facts the character might never have thought to consider, plus unambiguous awareness of the most relevant incarnation’s wishes related to the topic. Because of the thoroughness of this information, it can be tempting to throw oneself into emulating one’s past selves headlong. The risks for obeying what these past incarnations are likely to ask of you, though, can go beyond Resonance and cause the forces of the Underworld to seek to destroy your disloyal character outright. However, you also have the power to assume your birthright and become the being you have always been. You don't merely know your past incarnations. You are them so long as you choose to be. That choice is yours to make, Ash Child. Balance Talk Note: Due to its similarity to the Whispers background, I suggest only one background of Past Lives and Whispers be allowed higher than 3 on any given character at one time. I also suggest that it be possible in a moment where one is embodying the Solar ideal, one be allowed to exchange some dots (probably not more than 2 or 3) of Whispers for dots of Past Lives, and the same goes for the classical Abyssal ideal. While a frequent back-and-forth would be silly, I do not want characters who have purchased Whispers at 3 or higher to be permanently cut off from Past Lives and vice versa. The dice-adding effect is strictly better than Whispers; Your background rating in dice on any roll is better than only being able to help on rolls for abilities that are weaker than your background. However, it can be used much less frequently than the Infernal version, with the player getting the same amount of uses per story the Infernal would per session. In comparison to Whispers, the Abyssal does not pay Willpower to activate the dice-adding effect of Past Lives, but does risk Resonance and gets only a limited number of activations per entire story. The vision effect is generally weaker than the Whispers version. Neverborn know virtually everything, whereas one's past incarnations could easily be mistaken about things and have gaps in their knowledge. On the other hand, the Neverborn's visions are closely tailored to getting the Abyssal to destroy the world, whereas one's past selves generally give visions which encourage the player to act on the intimacies and motivation of the past incarnation. This may be far more useful and palatable to friendlier and gentler Abyssals depending on who their past incarnations were. Because Abyssals are supposed to be following the visions of death and destruction, the potential for large Resonance gains is sprinkled throughout the background liberally. The background is powerful, but its use has significant drawbacks and offers much to a prospective Storyteller interested in hooks for the Abyssal. Ideally the background should provide a healthy mixture of personal side-plots, opportunities to help further the objectives of the other PCs, and, most importantly, the gut-wrenching moral choices that accompany being both Damned and a Hero. Milton: that encyclopedia is a pretty cool thing! Take a bonus 3 XP! The Past Lives BG, I'll allow...with a caveat. Since the visions are random firings of memories that aren't yours, and aren't directed by an outside force that has, if not your best interests, at least some use for you at full functionality, the PL visions can and will be much more inconvenient than Whispers - I'm talking full-blown hallucinations in the middle of battle and the like.

I mentioned this on IRC, but I'm in my last 4-5 weeks of grad school. My time is now exceedingly scarce. I'll be off of IRC, with the possible exception of weekends, maybe. Onyx will continue to Sherlock/Batman it up. She'll go along with whatever plan the Denzik team ultimately embraces, to the best of her ability (though she is firmly in favor of the "steal everything that's not nailed down; pry up the nails, take that, then leave the nails" plan).
