...and we liked it that way.

I was born in '80 and I literally cut my teeth playing Atari and C64. I chewed the hell of the rubber boots that covered the Atari joysticks. There's a reason they sold replacements in packs of two.

I was born in 1985, so while the NES was out, many people still had their 2600's around. I think the first game I ever played was combat, followed by river raid. I like the aesthetic. The 70's art style is really funky looking, and nothing looks the same. I still play Atari, because the games are dirt cheap, some of them have never been ported, and they are quick to pick up. I would recommend Night Driver (I swear it's a euphemism for drunk driver) and any of the IMAGIC games. Also, it's drat near arcane to toggle difficulty switches, select the game, and push the start button. You can use a wide variety of controllers too, and there hasn't been a home console with a spinner controller since.

The Intellivision had a spinner built into that strange joystick.

And the NES had the Arkanoid controller.

Obviously, I played a lot of Atari and in the early days of the NES I was buying every 2600 game I could get my hands on for $.25 each from garage sales. I got a ton of awesome stuff from that and played pretty much all of Atari's first party games. The 2600 was at its best when it was replicating those basic arcade games from the late 70's and early 80's...

Interesting note, for those of you recording videos of retro games and posting them on YT (I experimented and found this out for myself earlier)

Okay, so I was recording myself playing Otogi 2 on my original xbox, right?

I recorded a session in AmarecTV, and then did the ole x264 and LAME encoding to get the filesize reasonable.

Now, what I did was upload the original file, in regular 480p, straight to Youtube.

This is what I got.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXyYXYqXpoU

Now, I was wondering why the hell Youtube mangled my video. Compression artifacts out the rear end, et cetera.

So what I did was I upscaled the exact same video to 720p in virtualdub and I got this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4qKIU5PwwQ

A direct comparison:

So it turns out Youtube automatically compresses the poo poo out of sub-720p videos on YT, and I had no idea. That's a pretty big difference.

So yeah, all I'm saying is I guess remember to upscale your vids to 720p before putting on YT for max quality?

See I knew I should have put a modifier in that sentence, because I knew there had to be some obscure spinner system out there. I had no idea about the NES spinner.

Quick Atari question: what's the best video I can get out of my 7800? Will it ruin the look of games that utilized the blur for their graphics?

Yar's Revenge sounds like it's warming up the killdozer. Holy poo poo the buzzing hum of doom.

I was born in 86 so grew up mainly with sms and the nes, but atari and lovely old dos games were an important part of my youth. Yar's Revenge is a nightmare game when you're little!

I feel like early ps1 stuff is nearly as divisive (I still love and play the hell out of it, but I know people the same age who can't touch it - let alone younger people).

e: spinner talk - any cheap usb ones available for emulation, or is diy mousewheel spinner still the answer?

Popping up from out of nowhere...

I was born in late '81, and my first video game experiences were likely playing Learning with Leeper on an Atari 800 before I found my first love, Gyruss. My older sisters played a ton of Star Raiders, and it was home to one of the best versions of Space Invaders around (the green ship up on left that ticks down whenever you clear a wave).

I have to cherry-pick a bit for the games I still enjoy from that era (Mountain King, Gridrunner, and a few others), but I will also admit that the Atari 800 was not nearly as "primitive" as a 2600.

The only pre-NES game system I'm interested in is the ColecoVision, and it's definitely more about nostalgia than the library. I was born in '87 so the NES was my intro to gaming. I didn't even know older game consoles existed until my dad bought a ColecoVision, at a yard sale. I don't remember how many games he got with it, but the ones I remember enjoying were Venture, Pepper II, Mr. Do, and Cabbage Patch Kids Picture Show. I already have Mr. Do on the SNES, but Venture and Pepper II look like something I might still enjoy for a few minutes. Don't know what to tell you about the Cabbage Patch Kids game other than I was a dumb kid.

Unfortunately the ColecoVision didn't last long in our house. Among the pile of Coleco games was Space Fury. The intro features a creepy-looking (to my 4-year-old self, anyway) alien head while freaky space music plays in the background. I interpreted the sounds as alien speech and thought the creature was talking directly to me. This scared the poo poo out of my, and I ran out of the room crying. My parents got rid of the Coleco and all the games shortly thereafter.

As regards the earliest days of my gaming, I was born in `81, and the first console I got to get my hands on was a Coleco Vision that my father bought new, on release. Zaxxon, Space Fury, Turbo and Donkey Kong were all stone classic ports, probably the best ports before the NES. Edit: Also, that genius analog synth poo poo that opens up Space Fury is the BEST.

Good times. I was actually fairly late getting a NES, since my mom and stepfather didn't have much scratch in those days, I didn't get mine until 1990, and even then, I missed most of the big name games, and got a rack of low-budget crud. Back to the Future? Seriously?

Double edit: I had the 5200 as a stopgap, when I was about 6 or 7. Unfortunately, I went through about eight controllers that all broke. Knowing what I know now, I should have just boxed the stuff and waited a decade or two for when the internet would show me dudes who can repair them and then I could play the giant shoebox full of games I had back then that I am just starting to replace now.

Born in '84 but my parents had an 8-bit Atari computer. I enjoy old arcade games for their simplicity and both the 5200 and 8-bit computers offer good representations of these games.

Right around the same age I had a severe fear of the Atari game Tunnel Runner. The sounds they (the Zots) would make when they would hunt the 3d maze for you, the fact that they were just giant heads with giant teeth that wanted to eat you and that freaky little video of the monster "getting you" if you were caught, even from behind, was just too much. I think that they could kill you without being seen and because it was in 3d I assumed they could leave the cartridge and kill me at night. I had to watch my mom throw it away to feel better.

Thank god she retrieved it after I went to bed and gave it back to me years later. I still play it now and then and it still chills the 4 year old in me to hear the first one coming and see him turn the bend...

They should work fine. As far as I'm aware genesis/mega drive was size difference aside from the rom itself.

All the consoles use the same 9 pin connector. As far as I'm aware console lockout on peripherals didn't happen until the dreamcast with house of the dead 2 and the light guns in the us

Thanks. I was under the impression that NTSC SNES pads wouldn't work with PAL consoles and thought it might be similar.

I went to a thrift store looking for video games today and found some shovelware, some sports and a copy of Sim City 2000. I ended up leaving the store with a 27'' Trinitron. It's an absolute behemoth with an absurd number of input connections; model number kv-27fs100L. I'm debating buying a remote but I'd probably pay more than the seven bucks the TV cost and I'm fine with getting up to press the buttons when I adjust volume and change between consoles.

Hit up a dollar store of some sort and you should be able to find a universal remote for about 5 bucks. (edit: full disclosure, it has been a while since I bought one.)

Do (normal size) SD cards fit flush in the Mega Everdrive? I know the SD2SNES needs that mini adapter for Macs to fit so I'd assume yes. If that is the case I'll skip making a slot for it and just use the micro slot. Plus then I'd only have to drill a hole for the Master System pause button. Are there any drawbacks to that method I'm not thinking of other than having to unscrew the case to put anything else on the card/update the firmware?

Now to go back in the thread and find Univbee's post about how those DAT files work!

It's a sixteen-way pad, not an actual spinner, though that's a high enough resolution it can sort of work like one. That and the analog sticks on the 5200 were just about the worst controllers I've ever used for games that were designed to be played with a traditional four-way joystick.

The Mega Everdrive SD slot leaves half the card hanging out of the cartridge. However it has both a normal and micro sd slot. The micro slot seats fine inside the cartridge without a hole cut.

Also noticed that the thrift store Dreamcast I bought has a "no returns" sticker on it so I guess I'm stuck with it if when it completely stops working. Oh well, still plays 3/4s of my games at the moment, and the boot up jingle is amazing combined with surround sound.
