Subtle
Quick to Anger
Captain Spawn of Wyrms, of the USS Envoy of Eternal Peace

The ship is underway, her authority asserted, and her orders pleasing to the eye. A heavily worded blank cheque to rampage about the seas as she so pleases, and a dainty little scrap of intrigue. Asking about the 'good old days', old man winter? Didn't mark you for a poet.

The bloody memory of the morning sun cracks the horizon on the second day of the voyage. Though it is generally her way keep the crew's lives well-spiced in variety, there are some rituals which Wyrm allows to settle in. From time to time. A more pleasant start to what will become a less pleasant day.

But some things are better done sooner.

West. The place the stone-headed Queen Bitch of The Middle cared least for. Yet, as the abundance of delightful seafaring tools of the age will testify, no less loved than any other by the old realm. The Reds have long been quite content to skim a pittance of tribute from the island tribes and be on their way. The better to overlook their treasures.

A thorough analysis of the history of the target isle, the surrounding waters, and in time the whole direction must be conducted to identify targets of opportunity. Diamonds in the rough with which to guild her claws. To this end she much apply the vessel's scholars.

Which means going to have tea.

She will save Rainbow for later.

"Send in Boxbot!"

The Best Laid Plans...

Ceaseless' work on the basic structure of the drive proceeds...rather less quickly than he'd like at first. It isn't until he spends long, sleepless nights puzzling over the schematics that he notices that one of the characters in the annotations is in fact a similar character with a nasty smudge mark. This is important, because it changes the sentence to mean exactly the opposite of what it originally said. Once that's cleared up, things begin going much more quickly.

3 sux on Int+Craft, but Ceaseless needed 4. He spends a WP to bring it up to the threshold. Progress is made: 4/30 sux 5/30 sux accumulated! Forgot you had Sail 5, which gives you +1 sux for nautical tasks! You'll be able to get up to halfway before you need all of that jade to go any further. Don't worry about the WP; the trip's long enough that you'll get it back before you reach your destination.

Tea Party...OF THE DAMNED

Butterfly's zombies demonstrate an astonishingly disgraceful lack of taste and show little to no interest in the festive cups of Sijanese Grey. They take right to it, though, once she discovers that it simply wasn't flavorful enough for them. Apparently, the living dead take their tea with two cubes of sugar and a spoonful of fresh blood.

Zombies are a go, albeit remarkably uncouth company.

Wyrm's research assignment is good for idly passing the time. Butterfly's firm grasp of current events serves her well in identifying targets ripe for plunder. The Coral Protectorates are the richest, but Coral has been militarizing in the wake of the Empress' disappearance; a promising target, but not an easy one. Much of the rest of the west is desperately poor, but a handful of exceptions stand out. Merchant ships are generally easy prey, and with the turmoil in the Realm's politics, its satrapies in Wavecrest could net a tidy profit for minimal effort. The only problem is that the dreaded Lintha pirates have likely had the same idea.

The word "Olkeida" is a common one in Western poetry, frequently used as a metaphor for happier, bygone days. Linguists believe it to be a bastardization of the Old Realm characters "Olv" (happiness), "Kai" (prosperity), and "D'nah" (nothing/nowhere). Taken together, they seem to mean something like "Utopia," but another memory stirs...somehow, Butterfly can't shake the feeling that she's heard the word before, in connection to a place called "Okeanos"...

Oh! Old Lady Witherly is trying to chew the fingers off of Mr. Shuffles! Bad zombie! No cookie!

And a glass of Chianti

As it so happens, there is an abundance of meat in the Revelation's stores, but "fresh" isn't the word for it. Barrel after barrel of beef and pork, none of it cooked, and all of it cured and salted to the point that the slightest taste makes Onyx feel as if her tongue is about to shrivel like a slug. The crew is considered to be emergency provisions only, but maybe she could convince Watcher that this constitutes an emergency.

There are also several crates full of citrus for the crew, clearly meant to stave off scurvy, but that's small comfort to Onyx. Seriously, who in their right mind would eat a raw lemon?

------

Rollin' on the River (Styx)

The voyage of the Envoy and the Revelation across the Sea of Shadows is thankfully uneventful - it seems the hefty inaugural sacrifices paid off, convincing the hungry ocean to spare you from its usual hazards. Two weeks out, the vessels arrive at the coordinates listed in the captains' charts. As the red moon reaches its zenith, the Exalts all feel a slight, tugging sensation against their hearts. The crimson moon is replaced by a silver one, and the dim, flickering stars of the Underworld are supplanted by the bright, twinkling ones of Heaven.

Creation.

Welcome to the world of the living. You've arrived in Creation by leaving the bounds of a shadowland (shadowsea?) at night. The trip has dinged everyone a single mote of Essence, but otherwise everyone's at full Essence/WP (except Krysmphoenix, who's committed a point of will to maintaining zombies).

The cover of night shields the Deathknights from the worst of the world's hostility, but the very air still feels somehow wrong.

See the sidebar on pg. 313 of the Core Book for breaking down Essence regen based on location and time of day; for the purposes of the chart, you guys count as Dead. Furthermore, you take a -2 dice penalty to all actions unless you either spend 5m to shield yourself for a day or wear way too much eyeliner surround yourselves with the "trappings of death": plague masks, funeral wear, skull bras, etc.

Up on the Envoy's mainmast, Never Within Reach looks out over the endless blue horizon. The world she left behind. The world she can't remember.

Nah, no time for this existential BS. Gotta keep an eye out for trouble. Never know when someone's gonna decide they can tak- hey, what was that?

To the west, far in the distance, a cloud is faintly lit by a brief flash of yellow light.

Over on the Revelation, Onyx sees it too. The other Day Caste's attention, however, is somewhat more divided. Looking away from the pinprick of light, she spies a shape on the eastern horizon.

Another ship.

Grabbing a spyglass, Onyx takes a closer look. She can't make out the ship's name at this distance, nor the colors on its flag in the darkness. Based on the vessel's silhouette, though, she's looking at a Guild trading cog.

Watcher at the Gates of Sorrow knows of this ship already. No need for the lookouts to report. The voices in his head have told him everything.

Onyx and Never roll Per+Awareness: 4 sux and 1 sux, respectively. The other ship's lookout rolls Per+Awareness 6 = 6 sux :psypop:. Them's the breaks, BUT Watcher's Sea-Scanning Glare informs him of the other ship's presence the moment you enter Creation. If he acts immediately, you might be able to do something before you're spotted.

Watcher at the Gates of Sorrow, Imminent Revelation of Oblivion - Captain's Quarters

The grizzled captain looks around for an intercom system, settling on a gently quivering trachea coming out of a nearby wall.

"In case you haven't noticed already, we have encountered our first prey. Thirty degrees to starboard, steady as she goes."

Shrugging, Watcher snaps his finger and mist descends upon them all--centering on the Envoy, or else they would get lost. If the other ship hasn't seen their prey yet, they never will.

He sits in his cabin for another minute, lightly stroking the spine of his small skeletal monkey before slowly walking up on deck.

Misting it up--15m, 1WP to make a 5 mile radius fogbank centered around the Envoy that drops all the wind (Oblivion is fine because of the other charm up which makes us move at double speed regardless of wind conditions) and gives really bad visibility and gives -3 to navigation, with failures driving ships towards the center of the fog.

Im Blind.
The Last Forsaken Poem

Waking to Creation, the real Creation, meant a slew frustrations Poem didn't want to deal with. Such as the aching feeling of essence that flowed oh so backwards. She yawned and stretched as she walked out onto the deck, the thought of land and that letter from the Deathlord fresh in her mind. Hopefully land anyway... even if it was tainted with the backwards essence. Forsaken looked out and attempted to see what Never was looking at, taking but alas it was no use. She was a better spotter after all. Poem stood there hand-on-chin bored once again at the front of the ship when finally she saw Watcher speaking to his crew not far off. "Must be nothing" she thought but decided to look harder anyway.

I am assuming I can see the other ship, not sure how close they are to us and quite frankly never been on a boat in my life, so I don't know if seeing Watcher talking is feasible. :P

Imminent Revelation of Oblivion- Drowned Maiden of the Unending Abyss

Maiden eagerly made her way to the deck, excited to finally get to see the boats weapons in action. The journey to Creation had been pretty dull, and she was getting restless. She'd spent some time dwelling on her instructions; the destruction of the Lintha was of particular interest to her, as she'd heard plenty of rumors in Coral about their viciousness. She looked forward to seeing how good a fight they put.

As for the other order...She supposed she'd just have to keep an eye out for anything unusual. Which was, admittedly, most things nowadays.

Still, depsite her excitement, Maiden shuddered as they entered Creation. It was still something she had a little trouble getting used to.

Never Within Reach Envoy- Crow's Nest

Never grins up at Luna and soaks in the feeling of Creation. It's good to be back. She's absolutely sure in her very bones that there's something important to do here, and when she finds the next memory stone maybe she'll know what it is.

But in the meantime there is pirating to do. And that should be fun.

The light flash in the distance piques her interest and after first making a note of the exact direction with her R.P.A. she touches the clasp around her neck. Her cape splits and unfolds into a pair of deep violet bat wings, a full 12 yards from tip to tip. Heart racing, the Abyssal leaps into the open air and...

A huge fogbank suddenly spills out all around her. All around the Envoy... obscuring the sight of everything.

"You bastards..." Never curses, not knowing which one of the other Exalts was responsible and thus angry with all of them for polluting her pristine view with Essence soaked smoke that renders her monocle useless.

She lands back in the Nest and flicks open the mouth of a skull set on a pipe that looks to serve as a communications node. "Captain. Informing you I am leaving the ship by air to investigate a light source spotted to the West, approx. distance 5 miles. I will return shortly."

Message given, Never lines up with where the Light was and launches herself into the air like an arrow.

10 motes reflexively to activate Wings of the Raptor, heading for the light.
I should have the proper direction thanks to Resplendant Personal Assistant's innate compass.

The Waves, Ceaseless and Unending, Devour the Shore, Imminent Revelation of Oblivion

Ceaseless looks up from his recent breakthrough at the captain's announcement. "Hadn't realized we'd gone through," he mutters to himself, slightly annoyed. Then the rest of the announcement sinks in and he perks up. Maybe something to drink was on the horizon.

It didn't sound like speed was vital, so Ceaseless takes the time to suit up before making his way on deck. Once there, he peers futilely in the direction of travel before shrugging and taking his station at the bow gun. He removes the Wind Jewel from his sword and sockets it into the appropriate slot.

He grimaces and glances around once more, saving a special glare for the moon and stars shining faintly through the fog. Matters still seeming less than urgent, he retreats to his cabin and digs through the closet. He returns to the deck, wrapped in a tattered, blood-stained black cloak and his jaunty hat replaced by a helmet crafted from a soulsteel-reinforced skull of some unknown species. Whatever it was, it had a big head and large fangs. Ceaseless is confident the details beyond that are irrelevant to the point he is trying to communicate.

"Send in Boxbot!"

A Warning Shot Across The Skull

Watcher feels the shot before he sees it, the distortion of space-time subtly inducing a sensation of being about to slide down a steep hill. There's nothing subtle whatsoever about what follows, though: a bolt of implosive Essence, a sphere of lusterless black haloed by rainbow-hued light, streaks through the air from the bow of the Envoy, knocking the Daybreak's hat from his head and leaving a new, sizzling part in his hair.

The orb shoots past Watcher, ricochets off of the mast, catches the underside of an overhang and deflects into the captain's cabin. It rebounds off of his dresser, reducing his sock drawer to kindling and rags, then flies out the door and through the hatch to belowdecks. The bolt rolls along the wall paneling, leaving an inch-deep channel in the wood paneling. Hanging a sharp left, it demolishes a passing skeleton, glances off a rib into the mess hall, and finally detonates against the pantry.

It's absolute carnage. Salt pork everywhere. Hardtack shrapnel embedded deeply into the floor and walls. The cook's stew is splattered along the kitchen's interior, along with the cook; it's palatability, arguably improved.

Oh gods, the humanity.

Ooh, Shiny!

Never soars through the dead mists, her wings straining to keep her aloft in the absence of wind currents. The fog goes on for miles, but even if she didn't have her Resplendent Personal Assistant, the dim flickering to the west would serve to help her stay on course. Within minutes, she escapes the unnatural doldrums and feels a cool breeze gently lifting her upwards.

Whatever she saw earlier, it's obscured by a cloud bank...but outside of the dead, stifling air of the fog, the intermittent, blue-and-gold lights are followed by the low rumble of thunder. Never spirals upward into the clouds, her wings gently fluttering as she searches for her target. Whatever it is, the sound is definitely getting closer...

*boom...* There, to the south.

*Boom...* Another flash of light, still hidden by the clouds...which seem to be actively moving with it to cover its approach.

The flickering dims to nothing. The only sound is the gentle sigh of the night breeze...then a rush of air...a fierce howl of wind...

*KRAKK*

*BOOOOOOOOOOM*

A vast shape flies underneath Never, blindingly brilliant and illuminated by more than just the lightning strike. Corposant flickers across her wings, mirroring the arcs of electricity dancing around...no, through its form. Its body is turquoise; its razor talons, burnished bronze; its eyes, gleaming flecks of obsidian; its forty-foot wingspan, white gold from tip to tip.

A thunderbird.

As she takes in the sight, the elemental conjures a gust of wind and banks off of it, hard. Halfway through its turn, it catches movement in the corner of its eye and cranes its neck to stare directly at her. It gives a soft, flute-like cry of alarm, and begins to circle, keeping an eye on her at all times, but makes no move to attack. Another high, warbling sound reaches Never's ears, distorted by the gale, but still unmistakably Seatongue.

"Who are you? Did they send you, too?"

Older and not-so-far away

The assault and indignity thrust upon Watcher are discomfiting, but neither age nor alarm have dulled his senses. Both the voices and his eyesight confirm the same thing: the Guild ship has not foundered, but is now moving under its own power. It's heading through the fog, cutting a sharp wake to its northwest.

It's going to be clear in a little under an hour; you could easily move to intercept. But why is it going through instead of out?

That finally gets Watcher to get up--nothing like nearly getting winged by Essence artillery to spry up old legs. He makes it out on deck and winds up to give a hearty bellow to the other ship:

"Well hello to you too! Didn't know you would get so put off by a little fog that you would fire on your allies! Meanwhile, the Guild ship is on its own power and is moving to the northwest instead of straight out of the fog, and some sort of weather magic is happening off to the west. Both need looking into; which do you want to investigate?" Touchy lady...might as well give her the illusion of control.

The Everlasting Butterfly of the Decadent Garden Envoy of Eternal Peace -- Deck
(Over the timeskip, Butterfly will make 15 more zombies for 30 total. 10 are covered by Followers, 20 by 4 invested points of Willpower. Using those invested points instantly kills 5 zombies per point.)

Shots fired? Thunder? Sounds like there was some kind of fight brewing up there.
And they didn't invite her!

"Mommy's got to go, you all behave yourselves while I'm out!"

Snatching a parasol on the way out, and making sure to close the door behind her to avoid another accident where her zombies got too friendly with a crewman because she left the door open, Butterfly hurried from her lab to the deck so she could get a better look.

(Occulting for info, 5 successes)

That definitely sounded like natural thunder, the only things making a sound that loud was a Thunderbird, Huraka and a Storm Serpent...the latter two wasn't likely since if it was them she'd see them on the deck. So this meant there was an elusive Thunderbird about, hopefully feuding with some water elementals over ownership of storms.

But they could also assume human forms, so there was a small chance they wouldn't want to instantly try to kill the already dead. With any luck, this one might even be willing to have some tea!

Not that she could tell very well, because someone left all this fog up! Ugh. "Never! Can you---oh..." And now that girl wasn't even up there. Dammit! Clutching the parasol close in case of possible rain, she hurried over to the Wyrm. "Captain! Why did you go start all this fun without telling me? Who invited the thunderbird?"

Never Within Reach -Open Ocean

Oh.

Never hovers in the air for a couple wingbeats while she runs down her options. Aggression seems foolhardy and unneeded for the moment, so she spreads her hands in a show of peace. Having a weapon you can summon at the speed of thought is quite handy when you need to pretend you are disarmed. She considers her words before replying. She's much more comfortable shooting things than speaking to them... perhaps it would be best to leave the speaking to others.

And if negotiations failed, the Envoy was a much better location to throw down than the open ocean.

Never calls back in Seatongue. "I am only the eyes of my ship, great Thunderbird. I witnessed your brilliant display from afar and set out to seek what made it. If you are not on some urgent task, would you accompany me back to my Captain and converse with my betters? I am sure there is food and refreshment, and perhaps we can learn more of each other."

The hell are you bastards doing!?" He fumbles around for a funeral mask in the style of Mask himself and puts it on so his eyes are shaded and only his mouth and protruding facial hairs are visible. Wearing a skull-and-crossbones flag as a cape and entirely too much soulsteel armor, he cuts a figure on the borderline of imposing and over-the-top.

He stumbles around entirely confused until he pinpoints what he determines to be a partial source of the confusion; There was a guild ship appearing to be nearly foundering off in the distance. "I've done this before, deaders. We are the shark chasing the dying whale. We are the darkness overtaking the light. We are the last thing the inhabitants of this ship will ever see. Piracy is like rum; Once you get a taste for it, it will stay with you forever."

Having been made to look stupid by the Old Man earlier, he refuses this time and manually cranks the ghost sails into operation, all the while howling at the crew to put the ship through her paces best they can; If the guild ship was seen moving under its own power, they must hit top speed as soon as possible in order to catch it.

There. Was that so hard, old man? Some people just need firm motivation.

Blazing away, that all things may look upon her and despair, Wyrm laughs. "Should have spoken up sooner, would have saved you a hat!"

The lack of immediate retaliation is appeasement enough for now, as Butterfly comes skipping all full of questions and concerns. "Oh, never you mind. This was just a... momentary breakdown in fleet communication. Easily solved. I may need to devote some time to constructing a more intuitive means of contact between my counterpart and I. Something for another day." The decks rolls sharply as the ship begins to reorient towards the lighting. Wyrm rides it to the other exalt, taking her under wing. "Still, a fine question you have about that bird. A question, deserving answer. An answer, our dear Chief of Security already swiftly pursues."

The wheels grind into action, the bow turns to face the distant storm, the Envoy is underway.

"Send in Boxbot!"

Avast, ye!

With a groan of wood and a fainter groan from the sails, the Revelation swiftly departs in the direction of the trading cog. The Envoy slowly turns a one-eighty, then launches to the northwest, its engine thrumming in a facsimile of life as the ship presses onward against the rising wind. Onward, to adventure! And hopefully plunder, too

Wind-Talker

The bird lets out a high, piping laugh. "Yeah, I've heard all about the welcome you've prepared for me on the Jewel. I'll pass, thanks." It spins lazily in the wind, pulling a barrel roll as it sweeps underneath Never again. "I plan to crash that party on my own time."

Easy Target?

The rest of the crew has to take Watcher's word for it, but the Revelation is closing fast with its quarry. Soon, the vessel comes within sight, its broadside exposed to the Abyssal ship. The writing on the boat's flank proclaims it the Thousand-Facet Jewel. Robed figures bearing lanterns pace around the deck, keeping lookout in vain. A pair of hardpoints, one on the bow and one on the stern, bear weaponry, but those feeble, mortal ballistae should pose no threat to the mighty-

And then something catches Watcher's eye.

A gleam in the fog, lantern light of metal. He knows that luster. That isn't steel.

It's Jadesteel.

It's on the weapons and armor of the lantern-bearers, whose robes, now that he looks closely, are remarkably like those worn by the masters of the Immaculate Order.

It's on the armatures of the two ballistae, which, upon closer inspection, crackle faintly with static discharge.

It's gleaming from between the gaps in the wood, which appears to be a false exterior layered over the ship's actual hull.

And on top of everything else, the edge of the fog cover centered on the Envoy is drawing closer and closer as the other ship goes west. In a minute, they'll be able to see him as well as he can see them.

Oh my. This isn't good. Not good at all.

The Revelation reaches its target first, and finds that it may have its work cut out for it. 3 sux on Per+Awareness is just barely enough to see the danger before it's too late. Never can chat up the bird for a bit longer before the Envoy arrives; about another minute.

Daughter of Onyx and Silver - Conquering Black Shadow

Onyx is already swinging down the rigging to the deck when Wyrm's trick shot destroys the pantry and roasts the cook. Yet another meal option gone.

Ignoring that particular tragedy for the time being, she looses Castle Captures the King from around her waist, the vicious soulsteel hook gleaming dully in the fog. She notes the first mate making sails ready, and goes to move her swift rider out of the way. There is a sudden pause.

A slow grin creeps across her face. Leaping aboard the Conquering Black Shadow, she whips the bludgeoning end of her weapon around one of Damnation's arms. "Ready? No? Good. Let's go."

A deep breath, a pulse of bloody energy, and the rider surges forward. From her perspective, time slows. She leisurely circles around the not-Guild ship, lining up the approach. A pleasant ride later, she twists the chain, loosing the first mate (who is screaming bloody murder, for some reason) to go slamming across the deck into one of the gunners. She finishes her run behind the captain of the Immaculate ship, chain daiklave whirling. The castle prepares to capture the king.

The Waves, Ceaseless and Unending, Devour the Shore, Imminent Revelation of Oblivion

"Captain, kind of hard to aim in this poo poo," Ceaseless says into the speaking tube that connects to the other gunner's position. "Give me some bearings and whatnot."

As Watcher describes the appropriate angles and distances to the engineer, Ceaseless closes his eyes in concentration, visualizing the relationships at play. Black essence rises in wisps from his armor and eyes, twining down into the hand on the trigger. When Watcher shouts, "Now!" Ceaseless' voice joins his simultaneously. The two Deathknights shout and fire as one.

Watcher at the Gates of Sorrow, Imminent Revelation of Oblivion

After what seems like a rather long time, Watcher finally puts down the firing manual. That should be enough, I think, at least for a surprise attack. The old man gives his monkey Jojo one last pet and then whispers in a hoarse voice, "Now." Like a well-oiled machine, his crew leap (some literally!) into action, launching Essence weapons and hurtling over to the enemy boat. Yes, this was how it was supposed to be. For his part, Watcher lines up carefully, getting an enemy gunner right in his crosshairs. He smiles faintly before squeezing the trigger. This would be the first step towards his fleet proper, one which wouldn't try to potshot his hat at the smallest opportunity.

Spending another 5XP to get up to Archery 4, then firing.

Last Damnation of Atlantis - Midair

Struggling to draw his weapon in the midst of the various chains entangling him, Damnation finally manages to draw his hulking Daiklave out of its tawdry black leather sheathe and position it. For a moment, he stopped screaming and formulated a plan; By throwing his body weight to the port side, he could swing port to starboard and attempt to decapitate the gunner while moving crosswise. Then, if this failed, he could allow the momentum to swing him backwards, allowing for a final, frontal assault before crashing into the deck. Damnation grunts to himself "Doable!" then resumes his previous blood-curdling pirate's howl.

"Send in Boxbot!"

Phantom Blood

The Envoy trails a cloak of spectral mist and dreariness as it sails northwest, following the intermittent flashes of lightning. The ship's spirit looks distinctly nervous and uncomfortable as the Deathknights approach the heart of the rising storm, its projected image sporadically wavering and breaking up into static. Two mighty beings circle somewhere in the clouds above, speaking of another storm brewing not so far away.

Golden Whirlwind

The thunderbird's face is unreadable, but it pulls back with a soft flap of its wings to slow down and get a better look at Never's caste mark. It hovers quietly in midair for a second before resuming its flight and its speech. "If you're telling the truth...IF...then I have three terms. First, the Jewel's captain dies. That's not negotiable. Second, I get first pick of the spoils. Any three things, and the rest is yours. Third...I don't care what you do with your share. Just make sure that the Guild and the Immaculates don't get one loving obol of it."

It ceases its circling and pulls alongside Never, one eye level with the Day caste's face. "Think you can swing that deal with your captain?"

Stoned Ocean

Rainbow, as it transpires, knows pretty much everything there is to know about the Neck and its islands. The natives are tribal, patriarchal, and chauvinistic in the extreme. Despite nominally being a satrapy of the Scarlet Empire, god- and elemental-worship in the Neck is rampant. Ritual offerings of maiden brides to the spirits have resulted in a truly staggering proportion of god-bloods among the islanders.

The tribes of the islands number five, and are primarily demarcated by hair color. The purple-haired Porphura dominate Okirho, although this territory is contested by the grey-haired Squalus, native to Amphiro. The black-haired Tautoga originally called Cormorant home...before it fell into the shadowland of Skullstone; now, they inhabit Kerkeis and the northern shores of Amphiro. The green-haired Smaragdi live mainly on Petraya, and are one of the more powerful tribes; their detractors claim their power is born of Wyld taint, although no evidence suggests this accusation has any basis in fact. The blue-haired Cyanin were the original rulers of the Neck before the Great Contagion thinned their numbers; now, they reside in small groups on most of the islands, but mostly the Cowries and Petraya. Bitter at being forsaken by their gods and subjects, a number of Cyanin have turned to the ancestor-worship espoused by the Deathlords.

These tribes call their home "Okeanos" between themselves and "The Neck" when speaking to Realm officials...although the Realm was seeming less and less official by the day for a time. The satrap, Sesus Chido, isn't even an Exalt, but merely a patrician. His incompetence meant little tribute to the Realm; little tribute meant that the Realm stopped caring. That the Realm stopped caring discouraged Chido from trying altogether.

All of this changed with the coming of the Immaculates, lead by one Brother Cleansing Tide (formally Grandmaster Cleansing Tide, but he refuses to use any honorific other than "Brother"). An accomplished martial artist and a hero of the Realm, information on his past is surprisingly hard to come by. His deeds, however, are well-known: upon establishing the mission on Petraya, he began a systematic purge of any and all godbloods and heretics, including the Cyanin ancestor cults. What seems especially strange is that such an interest would be taken in converting the heathens way out in the rear end-end of nowhere, but hey, that's zealots for you.

Holy gently caress, 7 sux on Int+Lore. It's safe to say you know anything that's public knowledge about the Neck in general and Petraya in particular, so chances are you won't be getting lost.

(Soul)Steel Ball Run

A shadow flits beneath the stern of the Jewel. It passes in an instant between instants, utterly unnoticed, but that's long enough for Onyx to deliver her deadly payload. A flailing mass of soulsteel and screaming obscenities whips from the end of her chain, launched at breakneck speed toward the starboard gunner with daiklave drawn and ready.

Time to kick off this party with some style.

2-die stunt! Take either 4m or 1wp!

Battle Tendency

Composing himself long enough to formulate the semblance of a plan, Damnation skids across the deck, slicing at the startled gunner in passing. His blade rips through her flank with shocking brutality; he feels her pain and fury bleeding into himself along with a portion of her very soul.

Surprise attack for 8L damage (10s don't count double for damage rolls). She has a single purchase of Ox-Body, so she's filled down through her -4 level. You regain 3m from your soulsteel weapon. Also, a 2-die stunt: take your pick of another 4m or 1wp.

Scenting blood, Damnation takes another swing before he clears her entirely...only for her to duck his blade with astonishing speed and grace. The nun stands from her gunner's seat and turns about. Her face is covered by a mask of pale birch, but her body language tells the Dusk caste that she's feeling fairly murderous. The Abyssal skids to a halt some ten feet away, shedding momentum through the clever expedient of plowing through a number of witless deck-swabbers and exploding them into showers of gore. The enemy reaches for a jade powerbow slung across her back...

...and then is pulled sharply off her feet, towards him, as he feels a sickening lurch behind himself. She catches herself, stands up, and begins a kata, hatred glittering in her green eyes.

And then the deck drops out from under them both.

Resolved this with Milton in IRC; he made his roll, but chose to fall belowdecks and land on his feet for additional shenanigans. Second attack was not unexpected, and she just barely managed to dodge it.

Diamond Ain't Unbreakable

The shot from Watcher's Essence Cannon staggers the gunner on the far side of the deck, occult forces hurling him from his seat. He regains his feet, hastily sits back down, and pivots to aim at the source of the shot...just as the bolt from Ceaseless' Implosion Bow catches him squarely in the chest.

The results are...well, undeniably cool, but definitely not pretty.

The Lightning Ballista he was crewing issues a plaintive crackle of static a moment before something gives and the device explodes in a shower of sparks. There's a tremendous pulse of energy as something tears itself free of the wreckage, gives a single, warbling cry, and vanishes into thin air. The rest of the machine whirs briefly, then expires.

Then explodes.

A hole is blown clear through the deck by the blast, dropping half a dozen more bodies into the ship's interior. And hey! Looks like the other gunner fell in too, along with...hey, isn't that Damnation?

...

Welp.

Jade-Dust Crusader

Damnation falls to the deck below in a rain of sparks and splinters. His boots land with a Crunch! on something squishy; his quarry, nowhere to be seen. There's a great hacking and coughing as four sets of lungs expel the noxious dust, which takes a bit longer than strictly pleasant to dissipate thanks to the unnatural stillness of the air imposed by Watcher.

When it finally does clear, Damnation finds himself in a richly-furnished dining chamber. Two young Terrestrials stare at him, slack-jawed, their forks halfway to their mouths. The third seat at the table is occupied by a junior officer, whose skull is in turn occupied by Damnation's boot. Slowly, the survivors reach for their daiklaves.

A scraping noise sounds from behind the Abyssal. The wounded gunner rises to her feet behind him, her bloodied hands glowing with emerald light. Half of her mask is cracked off, exposing the rust-hued face underneath, twisted into a feral snarl.

It is on.

Surprise round's over; crew of the Revelation owes me some Join Battle rolls.

Damnation was never quick to react. Precise and fluid in his motions, yes, but never quick to react. The ponderousness was almost intentional on his part, simply staring down the room full of lizard children, wondering if they'd be brave enough to do much of anything. He leans over and stares one of the youngbloods in the face from behind his mask while readying his weapon once again.

"Scared yet, Boy?"

They would get to make the first move, but his black aura suffused the entire room, the presence of the Underworld tangible for all present. Damnation wasn't even sure if the two youngbloods would be brave enough to attack; Maybe that was why he gave up the first move.

Never Within Reach -Open Ocean

Feeling more cocky now that her Caste mark is showing, and the Envoy is nearly in range, Never laughs. "I have no need to lie. If you do not want aid, there are other ships to destroy and we plan to drive both the Immaculates and the Guild from these waters with all speed in any case."

She crosses her arms and frowns at the bird. "There will be no objections to the first, and the third is a given. As to loot... well, that is a bit premature, when we have not even seen the Jewel, if you wish to lay claim you must ask the Captain." She looks below, as the Envoy sails into view, even through the fog. "There she is now!"

Hrm. Looks like the surprise party's started, and everyone's showing up. That means it's not a surprise anymore! You can't have a surprise party once it's not a surprise. Then it's just a party. Better keep the surprises coming to ensure it's a still surprise party. Surprise parties are the best.

Satisfied with her logic, blood begins pouring from her caste mark. Onyx's elbow lashes backwards, into her billowing anima, and she feels the pattern into which it shatters. The Day Caste blends with the disorienting shadows, angling just so. There. Now she can see the layout a little better.

...Or could, before the lightning cannon exploded. Interesting.

Choices, choices: what to do? For a moment Watcher considers trying to potshot the Earth aspect off the boat, but pauses before squeezing the trigger--that's a lot of jade that would be falling to the bottom of the ocean. What else would do? But the angles aren't right for it at all...

He grabs Jojo and starts pulling on various bones, making sickening popping noises as the skeletal monkey's finger and spine joints are forcibly dislocated. At first it seems like madness, but soon it becomes apparent that he is using the poor thing as an impromptu abacus, calculating an exact trajectory.

An instant later, a beam of pure Essence lances out of the fog, refracting through a glass window near the rear of the ship. After half a dozen bounces off of tea kettles and sea chests and a rather nice desk (which may need some touching up now), a wave of force rips open a door's hinges and slams into the Earth aspect, staggering him back towards the main mast; with any luck, he will strike with such force that it disturbs the crow's nest.

Cutthroat Diplomacy

A bolt of lightning falls slowly from the sky, spiraling downward onto the deck of the Envoy. The thunderbird makes a beeline for her captain, clearly eager to make a strong first impression...or maybe because he spotted that Implosion Bow and wants to be sure that Wyrm can't fire on him without splattering herself as well. Pulling up from his dive, his immense form dissolves into sparks and radiance, leaving a tall, extraordinarily-pretty male human in its place.

Far more eye-catching than his good looks, however, is his gear. The no-longer-bird wears a breastplate and leggings of solid gold...no. Not gold. Not even gold shines this much, let alone in fog, in the dead of night, next to a Deathknight with her light-devouring anima flaring. Orichalcum. A great, double-bladed axe of the same metal is slung across his back.

All the same, though, the crew seems to be less impressed by him than by Wyrm...or maybe they just know their captain well enough to fear her far more than any stranger.

He extends a hand. "And a good evening to you, Captain. They call me Bolt-from-Brightest Day. So, I hear you're in the market for some plunder?"

Bird rolls 3 sux to Wyrm's 7. Advantage: Captain Draculady.

Party-Crasher

The two cadets rally to the aid of their superior, drawing blades in a flash and issuing somewhat quavery yells of courage. As one, they bring their weapons down on the loathsome monster before them.

PATHETIC.

The nun unslings a heavy-looking staff of green jade and lunges with a shriek of rage, attempting to pulp Damnation's skull. Toxic floral blooms float through the air in her wake, her anima causing the walls to pulse with green light as new growth springs forth from the dead wood. The Deathknight brings his own weapon up in the nick of time, sparks flying from the point of impact as the vibrations run through the daiklave and into him.

Hatred burning in her eye, she darts back and begins to whirl her staff about in an elaborate kata, seemingly indifferent to her horrific injuries.

All three deebs make their valor check. All three attack Damnation. All three get exactly six sux on their rolls, including the nun's 24-die alpha strike :psyboom:

Nun rolls well enough on JB that she gets to act again before Damnation, and activates Ivory Pestle Form, which, among other effects, negates all penalties to her Parry DV. Damnation is up.

The concussive bolt ricochets through the cabin before exiting and striking the Earth-Aspect squarely in the chest. He grunts slightly, but otherwise shows not the faintest sign of surprise, nor the intention to budge. The impact that would have hurled an ox back fifteen feet fails to push him even an inch.

Something tickles in the back of the old captain's skull. His dominion over the sea is unquestioned, his knowledge of every fish, sail, and current unparalled...but something else presses in on his consciousness. A sense of absence. Eighty kilometers to the west, something veiled in concealing magics has entered the realm of his awareness.

Except that this was a naval battle, not a melee. The enemy isn't bothering to fight like civilized folks, and their sole boarder seems to have fallen below decks, along with Sister Cynis Xùlan. There's nothing within reach for her to fight.

A bolt of Essence erupts from her own cabin and slams into Brother Mnemon, winding him. Sister Iselsi is in a daze, still trying to register the attack. It's said that Hesiesh saved the entirety of his Essence for one valiant battle against the Anathema. Perhaps a single, courageous move could end this, too. Often, the only difference between bravery and stupidity is success.

It's a little-known fact that Lightning Ballistae are, in fact, fully able to function as ordinary siege weapons. The nun takes aim, thinks of the Immaculate Dragon and his heroism, and signals a terrified mortal to pull the trigger.

Over on the deck of the Revelation, a fiery comet appears in the sky, rapidly drawing near. It shrieks past the fore turret, misses Ceaseless by scant inches, tumbles over the railing, and lands with a thump on the undead hydrofoil.

The Waves, Ceaseless and Unending, Devour the Shore, Imminent Revelation of Oblivion

There had been no splash, just a thump. Interesting.

The Waves, Ceaseless and Unending, Devour the Shore was a good engineer. He had definitely included a section in the ship's operations manual relating the proper procedure for a parasite and/or debris obstruction of the forward foils. Unfortunately, he's pretty sure that neither the captain nor the crew have read that portion (or any portion, for that matter) of the operations manual, and they definitely hadn't drilled the procedure.

Sometimes you just have to do it yourself if you want it done right. Ceaseless strides to the manual foil controls and slams the pitch lever to maximum dive. At the current speed, hull buoyancy should be enough to prevent total submersion of the main deck. In theory.

In the instant before impact, Ceaseless grabs hold of a handy rope, grins, and cocks his head to listen for the delightful sound of steam. Suddenly, his grin fades as he realizes he'd forgotten one minor detail.

"Brace fo-" he manages to bellow before the impact.

Drowned Maiden of the Unending Abyss

What HELL just hit the hydrofoils or whatever they were called? Well better check it out. The Prince is gonna be pissed if the boat was broken already. Better get down there and check it out. Everyone else is probably preoccupied already.

What the gently caress? Did this nutjob launch themselves over here? Maiden drew her other sword and grinned. If she was crazy enough to pull a stunt like that, she may actually be worth fighting.

And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
"When you coming home, dad?"
"I don't know when
We'll get together then son you know we'll have a good time then."
Last Damnation of Atlantis

"Heh." Damnation stops laughing at the Dragonblooded for a moment and just sits down, shaking his head. Taking a bite off a leg of roasted lamb and downing a glass of wine, he sits at the table, staring down the martial artist. "One." Refilling his wine glass and picking at some vegetables, "Two." Downing the second wine glass, he breaks it against the table. "Three!" At that point, the ship is rocked by the rollicking wave from the submerging of the Revelation and it's not clear what's going on for a moment, though Damnation is moving with all the swiftness he can muster...

What happened in the aftermath of the wave is not immediately obvious. Before the two young Dragonblooded are finished wiping the salt water from their eyes, they heard a low, rumbling laughter. Their eyes turn towards Damnation. The dinner table is gone, and all they see is the tall Abyssal standing in the middle of the room, facing them with his hands outstreched. They look to the left and see their dinner table slammed against the wall, a crumpled form behind it, and with trepidation they notice their superior's Jade Staff inside the heap. Their gaze shifts to their right and they notice, proceeding outwards, a bottle of wine, three glasses, a rack of lamb, and finally their superior's head, all balanced gingerly atop the giant soulsteel blade. Looking towards the subordinates, Damnation, face covered in a grotesque funeral mask, leans it as if to hear a whisper from the head. "What's that, Skull? They're too weak and should be given a chance to surrender and then resume dinner with us? That'd be such a disappointment. If they keep fighting and die, we can make them Just Like Me. Wouldn't they love that?"

He cocks his head in an exaggerated listening pose, waiting for their answer.

In Effect: Dusk Anima

1. All opponents attempting to attack or oppose her
(socially or physically) to suffer a -1 external penalty on all attack
rolls. This unnatural Emotion effect costs five points of
Willpower to ignore for the rest of the scene.
2. The Dusk’s terrifying
glory unbound also disrupts attempts at coordinating
attacks against her, increasing the difficulty to arrange such attacks
by two.
3. Additionally, the immense Essence pressure within
the character’s anima slows all incoming attacks, increasing
the character’s DVs by 2.
4. Finally, Abyssals of the Dusk Caste
are immune to all fear-based Emotion effects while their anima
power is active.

In Effect: DREAD LORD’S DEMEANOR
Once per tick, anyone making physical or social attack(s) must choose to roll Valor at difficulty 1 or Willpower at difficulty 2. If they fail, the attack is negated. This effect costs 3 willpower to resist for a scene.
