Ledenko posted:Maybe you should just stop with your "I'm an rear end in a top hat but I don't see it" stories for the benefit of us all. Those are some of the best though. - As far as ARMA is concerned I'm still pretty well burnt out. I co-lead a group for about 8 months and was responsible for keeping our servers maintained while also managing our mod packs and training sessions. We ran training because it got kind of annoying to set up a quick mission with that live mission building mod (Forgot what it was called, MCCS or something?) and then, out of 12 dudes, have 8 show up with .50 anti-material rifles and every other guy loaded out as a one man army. So we made rules to keep that from happening, limiting loadouts to make the missions harder on the team. It was good poo poo for awhile but I was horrible at mod management and in the end people complained because I would update the mod packs every 2-3 weeks with a new mod we'd been testing. The biggest problem being that we weren't using a sync service on the mods so everyone would have to re-download a 1-2gb file vice the standalone mod since I had tweaked cfg's to match what we needed, as well as done custom porting of A2 mods into A3. I think the breaking point was when I spent 4 months building a 3 team hostage rescue/site exploitation/down the AA for extraction mission. It was beautiful, my first real well done mission with the use of multiple triggers, tasks, all sorts of assets and countless hours spent fleshing out various buildings, towns and outposts around Altis to make those portions of the map where the mission took place feel alive/used. Then it wouldn't run on the server, so I spent 2 weeks troubleshooting it with the mod creators and a couple of other more savvy server/content creator types and when it just refused to run I decided I was done. Still can't really bring myself to reinstall and leave the game installed. I did come back to check out the Eden editor and made a two quick 2-man missions for a friend of mine to play with me but now I'm back to not even wanting to play. Maybe when I get my new HDD I'll come try and give ACEgoons a shot again.

It's a pain enough for the guy running the server to keep mods updated, it's also a huge pain in the rear end for mission makers to keep the missions updated for the mods. I remember some examples of item names or syntax changing in ACE that would break a mission, or some previous items in the RHS mod not being present in an updated version. Although it's neat to have all the toys and more realistic stuff from mods, those changes can break good old missions and force people to constantly update them just for a few stupid changes. In that sense, I prefer vanilla because that mostly doesn't happen.

At this point I agree. Though back then I was the server guy and the mod guy so I had everything up to date. There was just some conflict somewhere that disagreed with me completely and refused to show it's face in the server logs. When I came back to check out the EDEN editor I debated throwing in a couple of mods and then decided that it just wasn't worth the hassle. Built a nice semi-HALO insertion mission (CH47 @ 1200m, eject w/ parachute) and a nice acquatic insertion mission that was pretty much the same, another Huron coming in to a low hover (3-5m above the water) and giving you just enough time to eject and begin the swim to shore. So much easier, not having to dig through to find the custom filenames or troubleshoot why things wouldn't show up in Eden.

Milsim story time: Ok so I joined a server after recently downloading the hot ACE mod. Pretty standard Evolution server but it was hosted by some milsimmers. This was in Arma 1. After having a good time in the evo server I wanted to join their elite group. So I go to the forums and they want me to hang around in their Ventrilo server for a while and submit an application on their webzone. I do so and its accepted, none of their rules or requirements seemed too bad on first glance. My first game with them wasn't an official gathering or anything it was just a bunch of them doing one of their missions. Because of some internet trouble I think I joined late. They then wanted me to ferry ammunition from the spawn area to them, back and forth, on foot. Alright, I can tolerate this maybe once. The mission ends while I'm ferrying rockets and magazines back and forth. Kinda pissed. Then more of them join. Apparently their leader joined as well. What I didn't know was they had ranks, and fake RP names and everything. So when I called the dude by his Ventrilo handle "Blackbird" or something like that he flipped his poo poo and threatened to kick me out of the group and poo poo because I didn't call him "Sir" or addressed him by "Lieutenant" and cursed me out and poo poo. I was pretty young at the time, probably in early highschool/late middleschool so I took it because I cared too much. Then I learned all new guys had to do weekly training sessions. With classroom instruction. Yes. Classroom instruction. We would sit in vent while a guy gave a loving slideshow and we were expected to listen and take notes. Also shown videos and poo poo. They wanted us (us being a gaggle of new "recruits" they called us) to keep a physical notebook and take notes. Also we were expected to memorize information that was posted on the forums. The thing that stands out in my mind is that they wanted me to memorize armor thickness, how many wheels, what type of differential, etc... were on armored vehicles. They wanted us to write this stuff down and memorize it, and be tested on it. At this point I started to give less of a poo poo and tried to keep my distance. The thing that made me leave was the first training session. These people actually expected to "haze" new recruits into their milsim clan. Virtual hazing. How pathetic can you get. Hazing is fine if done right but over the internet for a video game? That goes above and beyond sperg. So the type of hazing was they would have us in a column formation, and they had a pacecar behind us, and they wanted us all to run the coastline of the entire Sahrani map. Like run around the whole island. poo poo would take like 6 hours. gently caress that, I quit. I later learned from a buddy I met (who stayed in, but quit later) that the founder and co-founder who claimed to be twins both serving in the airborne were actually the same person, who was like a highschooler or college student or something. This crazy fucker would maintain two different steam accounts, two accounts on the forum, etc... and actually act differently between both. That's loving insane. They eventually found out because they put 2 and 2 together when somebody finally asked the question why both of them were never on at the same time and they actually put him under scrutiny and his dual personality fell apart. Oh yea and they wanted everyone to fill out paperwork for requests for gear, training for different "roles" (You had to qualify for literally every gun in the game besides the standard M16 or M4 or whatever), or after action reports and poo poo. I think it was 7th Cav or something.

Does anyone play any serious weekly games in arma 3? Like Hardmode Games or VOG. I know chances are low but if you do, or would like to try tell me your in game name or ask how you can start. It's a Russian servers, so I don't really expect any of you play there or desire to play. Some people make a mission for 100-150 people match with references to a real life conflicts/ battles and you play it as a platoon (several squads on each side and commander). RHS, ACE3, Task Force radio. Are there any English speaking projects like that?

The whole fiasco got better with the clan manager identity unraveling to a person in Philadelphia psychiatric hospital and poo poo like that. I have his phone number still, after all these years. There is something in ARma that makes people short circuit on an amazing level. Best parts are usually the fact that in their desire to recreate the military operations, they try to get all that instruction and training and ranks and poo poo, but they can't move as an effective unit nor can they get out of the ammo boxes before 30 minutes are up. Good times. The leader of the clan called himself "Beckwith", and after he went to the hospital for a longer bout and after the paypal account was ransacked out of the insane hosting fees, north of 600$ monthly, the site and the group was down for a long time. It seems they are back up again. http://www.us-socom.org/ He once started no poo poo crying when he entered a TS channel and no one called "attention". They used to make people run with empty rifles in game and yell bang bang in TeamSpeak. Go read their webpage, it's amazing. They used to have this virtual MEPS where you wait around and get assigned to different counselors who talk to you about virtual armed service careers and you'd talk to a "base psychiatric" and all kinds of that. I wish I was kidding. I've been to real MEPS, and it make so much more sense than their virtual one. I just kinda hung out for the ride after the insanity so that I could see how far the rabbit hole goes, but at some point the abyss started staring back. I have some old emails and discussions saved up from years ago from one of their "court martials". A buddy who served in Finnish Army tried playing with them and didn't address them as "Sir" so they started a court martial and then added "charges" because he had shot friendlies in a tank ingame, and he decided to troll them back real hard. These are some of the insightful posts from the clan manager who called himself Colonel beckwith. quote:> Date: Fri, 8 Apr 2011 13:28:09 -0700 quote:> If you want a court martial, we can have on. I played some last night, and had a lot of fun. It's very different from vanilla KOTH; much slower pace, and vehicles are harder to kill. It's still early and I have a feeling people still haven't figured out how to min/max. Plus not much of the higher level stuff has been unlocked. Right now most people seem to be running around with bolt action rifles; I'm afraid it will get pretty silly once everyone unlocks MG-42's and PPsh's. If you can stand the crappy 512x512 textures, all you need is to subscribe to a single mod from its workshop page. You can find more info in the BI forum post. There are other mods that turn your purchased copy of IF into a mod for A3, but the install instructions are daunting, and although the lite version claims to have multiplayer comaptibility, it's not clear to me that it will work with KOTH servers, as they may not accept the key signatures.
