EXCEED CHARGE
Kovar - Taeless

The game was so simple now, his every mistake and the path he should have taken as plain to him as the table before him. Looking further back every error that had lead up to this place jutted out at him and he wondered how he could have ever been so blind. He now saw the signs of the king's impending betrayal written all across his memory, and the counter-plan he could have employed to block it seems like child's play to him now. Several hours pass as the general is lost in his reverie, dissecting every decision he had ever made, now aware of exactly what he should have seen and done at each juncture.

Enough of this navel-gazing. The past is the past and there is little I can do to change it, what I must focus on is the future. So the general looks forward and the tree of possibilities that was daunting the night before is now almost painfully simple. Weeks of malaise surviving on what pittance he had scrounged when he had washed ashore, blasted away by the light of revelation. A single path sparkles like a jewel in this thoughts, the road to his kingdom and his revenge. First he would need a base and an army, and not just any army. He required an army he had built with his own two hands, with troops ready to kill for him, to die for him. With his new clarity he would be best served by troops who would carry out without hesitation any order no matter how ghoulish or bizarre it may appear to them.

The solution to this first hurdle came as easily as everything else has this morning. What he required was a village, isolated and cut-off from the outside world. A village under threat from some outside force of bandits, that loathed their oppressors but were unable to oppose them. A place where he could train them, mold them into a fighting force of his imagining. Then use their victory of their oppressors to cement their devotion to him, leaving him able to transform the town into his base, a hidden source of fighters whose loyalty and ferocity would become legend.

The path before him as clear as glass, he stands. The first matter of business was to locate a village that met his criterion. So, with renewed vigor he made his way around the tavern, using his natural charm to extract information and rumors about such matters. With each new answer another piece of the puzzle appears, and with his knowledge of the needs of a force large enough to oppress the village he seeks he narrows down the location and narrows it again, until finally the location of the place he seeks will be revealed.

Trying to find a village that meets Kovar's needs(1.Fairly isolated, some place with little chance of outside aid that can be later used as a hidden fortress. 2. Being exploited by bandits or an equivalent force, whom they hate but are unable to oppose. 3. With a populace that he can slowly indoctrinate and mold into the army he requires.)

Powerful Charisma[+4] - To use Kovar's natural presence to pump the locals for information he can use to try and determine the location of such a village.

Experienced General[+4] - To apply his knowledge of the logistical requirements of a large force to help narrow down the list by identifying areas in which rumors indicate the right type of bandits are located. Also, to evaluate facts and rumors to select a village of the right temperament to be indoctrinated and trained.

Valhawk posted:

Kovar, Lion of King’s Mountain, Butcher of Pravda

Born on the island of Mirn, Kovar was the son of a well-established military family. Mirn is a hereditary monarchy with a wide gap between the nobility and commoners, and no room for movement between the classes. As far as non-nobles went those who reached the middle-ranks of the military(there were no common generals) lived comfortably. Taught the ways of the blade, and spear, and of battle since he was small, Kovar proved a natural soldier and a gifted tactician.

Once he was of age, Kovar joined the island’s army like his father and his father before him. His natural talent and skill propelled him meteorically through the ranks, becoming the youngest colonel in the history of the kingdom. Things likely would have remained this way if not for the war. Five years after making colonel, a group of nobles dissatisfied with the the loss of their prerogatives under the past king, launched a rebellion. Civil war broke out, and the royalists seemed to be on the losing side.

During the course of the civil war, a battle occurred at a place called King’s Mountain. As the battle dragged on the rebels seemed sure to win, and capture the arms store on the western side of the mountain. This seemed especially true when a primitive bomb detonated in the general’s tent, killing the entirety of the command-staff. Suddenly the most senior officer available Kovar took command over the battered royalist army. With a series of brilliant feints followed by a vicious counterattack into the center of the enemy’s formation lead by Kovar himself, he managed to turn the tide of the battle. The noble army, battered after the surprise defeat retreated to their strongholds, and the royalists troops feted their new hero, calling him the Lion of King’s Mountain for his masterful command and ferocity in battle.

When news of the victory arrived back at the capital, the king did the unthinkable, exorcising royal prerogative he promoted Kovar to the rank of Grand-General placing him in command of the Royal army. Over the next 6-months, General Kovar launched a series of lightning raids aimed at destroying the supply network of the rebels, followed by three assaults in quick succession on rebel strongholds. His repeated victories and tendency to lead from the front simply served to reinforce the stories of his genius, and his men’s adulation of him.

By the time siege of the final rebel stronghold began, Kovar was already a hero to the commoners and to the military. It was perhaps for this reason that the king had engaged in secret negotiations with the nobles to broker a deal. In exchange for paltry concessions and a general pardon the nobles would end their rebellion, and renew their vows of fealty. Kovar knew nothing of this arrangement, and when he lead a small detachment to get a lay of the land he was shocked to come upon several rebel villages that had been slaughtered to the last man, woman, and child.

When the peace was announced, he was shocked. Even more so when rumors started to circulate that he had been responsible for the massacre of noble villages, and it was his brutality that lead to their “surrender”. Of course, when the members of the unit that had been with him started to disappear, he feared the worst. These fears were realized when a number of confessions of troops having taken part in the massacres appeared. Broken soldiers repeated the same story in every detail, and to Kovar what was happening was clear, he had been sold out by his king. He had become too popular, a potential threat to the king, he quickly realized what was coming, but was helpless to do anything to stop it. With a mournful certainly the pieces fell into place: the king’s shocked reaction, the show trials for his innocent subordinates, and finally his own trial. The verdict, exile.

Mirn was no ordinary island, it was surrounded by a magical sea. The sea was endlessly stormy, and only safe passage could be secured by use of a magical device passed down from king to king. This meant that when Kovor was stuffed onto a small boat with his trusted lieutenant he was fully expected to die. In the end, he only survived because his lieutenant sacrificed himself on his behalf. With his dying breath, the man who had been besides Kovar since King’s Mountain, commanded his superior to live on and to avenge him and all of their comrades by returning one day to dethrone the traitor-king.

Qualities

Weaponmaster[+2] - Sword, spear, staff, mace, whip, bow, sling. Kovar is well versed in all the weapons of war, and it quite able to find a weapon almost anywhere he goes and use it well.

Powerful Charisma[+4] - There is just something about the general that makes him irresistible. Those with weaker wills fall in line at his command, and those with stronger bend beneath the pressure of his desire. He wields this potent weapon with a natural flare.

Experienced General[+4] - Kovar has lead men in battle, he has managed campaigns, held conquered towns. In short he knows what needs to be done to run a war and maintain an army and he knows how to do it.

Outcast[-2] - Kovar has been exiled from his homeland. Barred from returning to the land he called home, and to those from that land known only for the incident, a coward and incompetent.

Divine Strategist[+2] - Kovar has been granted the gift of perfect strategy. No longer does he struggle in the mists of uncertainty, all becomes clear before his gifted eyes and the perfect counters and strokes come as naturally as breathing. It is not just war where the general can wield his heavenly skill. Trade, diplomacy, oratory all are matters of proper strategy, war by other means, and all flow just as naturally to the general as battle itself.

Core Value: Conquest and Revenge. His rise followed by his fall has awakened a hunger within Kovar. He has seen how fickle fortune can be when you rely on the patronage of kings and nobles. If he truly wishes to revenge himself against the traitor-king, and to secure his own future then he must forge an empire of his own. Only then will he be able to build an ideal state, one which he will use to dethrone the traitor-king and his nobles.

Kovar - An inn in Taeless

The northwest. Everything pointed that his ideal village would be located there. The problem would of course be getting there. Sadly, the kingdom does not pay criminals about to be exiled for services rendered. He had afforded this inn only thanks to some gold he had sewn into the clothes he was exiled in. From here on it would be hand-to-mouth, which would greatly slow his journey. It would though give him plenty of time and opportunity to refine his list.

Using what little funds he had left he purchased a sturdy traveling cloak and staff, and let out a self-depricating fit of laughter at the thought of the once great general reduced to a poor wanderer. Another indignity to lay at the feet of the traitor-king.

Looking nothing like the leader he had once been Kovar set out, aiming for the next settlement on his northeasternly route, hoping he might be able to find a way to pay for lodging along the way.

Heading towards the northwest. Kovar is prepared to have adventures along the way in order to try and pay for this whole endeavor.

Kovar - Rural Taeless, North-West Region

quote:

***Kovar turns back at the guards tale. He approaches respectfully, knowing he looks like little more than a vagrant by now. However, even in rags his natural presence shines bright. (Powerful Charisma[+4]) "Pardon my intrusion fine sirs, but I could not help but overhear your story. Would you do a humble man like me the favor of telling me more about these strange happenings?"

First Guard: "Who are you?" The first one asks belligerently, but the second one cuts him off being the more personable of the two.

Second Guard: "I don't know what to say beggar" Apparently your rags make you seem like one of the poor. "Many nights for some moons now there is a far of light in the sky, like it was on fire as the moon rises."

***Kovar looks to the more belligerent, "I am Kovar. A wanderer, but one with some skill with blade and spear".

First Guard: "If you had that skill you'd use it to get some coins, friend." He says with a nasty laugh, clearly believing you to be boastful and untruthful. His comment is not unreasonable in Taeless however, the sword is a reliable way to earn coin, if dangerous.

***Kovar smiles, "Well, I did come this way in search of work, but we come far afield. Tell me more about this strange phenomenon. I will admit that I saw no such thing on the way into town."

Second Guard: "Aleph's Ashes I don't know how you could not man. The sky lights up like fire across the entire horizon, and the wailing is beyond belief."

GM: You don't remember either of these last night or the night before. Maybe the wailing only occurs sometimes and the phenomena is more local than they say? Scared and superstitious men are prone to exaggeration after all.

Kovar: "I swear to you sir, that I recall no such event. When did all this start?"

Second Guard: "It was the moon after the harvest festival, it started then." The second one said after some thought.

First Guard: "The moon ate the sun during the day, remember? That night it started. I knew it was a bad omen." The first says darkly.

***Kovar looks pensive for a moment, and then comes to a decision. "If I were to discover the source of these strange occurrences. What would be the reward?"

First Guard: "You? Beggar. You might as well fly up to the moon and ask why it eats the sun sometimes, you'd have better luck there." The first one sneers.

Second Guard: The second one looks dubious, but is more polite at least. "It's hard to say. If you found it, a few coin would be given I'd expect. If you were to manage to do something...well that would be different."

Second Guard: "Elder isn't always free with money though, but I'd imagine the folks around would be endebted to anyone who stopped this awful curse."

***Kovar straightens himself out, rising to his full stature. "You wish a demonstration then?" He flicks up his walking stick. "How about a friendly sparring match?"

First Guard: "I've got better things to do than knock down a beggar." The first guard says with a belligerent sneer, avoiding trouble in the typical manner of a bully.

Kovar: "Don't have the blood in your for a wager then?" Kovar's tone is ever so carefully mocking, enough to poke at the guard without provoking his companion.

First Guard: "Not this early in the morning. Not without a lot more ale before I make a wager with a beggar." The first guard says with a laugh. This one is less mocking, as if what you've said is genuinely amusing for some reason. The second guard smiles a little as well.

Kovar: "Not even with this at stake," Kovar pulls out a fine dagger, the hilt is inlaid with gold, and the scabbard has 3 shining jewels on the outer side. It was once the symbol of his office as high-general, but now it was the only connection remaining to his life on Mirn. It was no mean prize, easily worth their year's salary combined.

First Guard: "Heh some you're a thief as well as a beggar. Well, I'll be happy to confiscate that off of you after I've 'punished' you in the name of the law."

Kovar: He turns towards the second guard, "And will you seek a stake in this. I wonder if either one of you alone has the means to match such a splendid wager, and there's no fun in a one-sided bet. Together however, you might have enough to potentially win yourselves this prize."

Second Guard: "Well you wouldn't be too far off on Algard's earnings." The second man says with a snort, earning a glare from the first one. "But sure, I'm not too proud to turn down a chance for easy living." He says, apparently a pragmatist.

The former-general lifted up his walking stick, holding it like one might hold a blade, as Algard pulled out his cudgel and the other guard watched on. Just as the card-game had unfolded once before, not the fight came to life before him. Before the brawl even began, Kovar had seen the move the man would make, and the perfect counter-stroke which could win the bet in a single quick exchange. However, as the chain of action and reaction unfolded he saw another route. He saw the road towards not only indebting the guards, but impressing them as well. Each stroke the perfect counter, each step proof of his skill. Then the guard began to move and the dance began in earnest.

Sparring for cash and prizes, setting up a potential recruitment of the guards, and teaching these potential recruits their first lesson, to not underestimate an opponent based on appearance.

m: Weapon-master[+2] to wield his walking stick like a sword.
d: Divine Strategy[+2] to read the poor guard like a book.

Kovar - Taeless, Town in the North West

The fight was fairly one-sided. Or rather, completely one sided. The bully of a guard found he could not manage to really do much to Kovar, who was able to predict his every move. Eventually after a number of bruises and becoming thoroughly winded he concedes.

"Alright...stranger...I yield." He pants and his companion looks disgusted. "Algard you fat pig now I'm stuck with your debt as well. And you both know we can little afford to match the worth of that trinket." He said making a sour face and considering the situation.

Kovar gives an easy smile, radiating the powerful charisma that he had always possessed an invaluable tool for any general. "Now now, there's no need to be too hard on him. This dagger," he hefts the dagger showing it off to the guards, "was once a symbol of rank. I was once a general, you know, before the caprice of kings and princes took it all away. Consider this a lesson to not underestimate your opponent due to appearance." He pulls the dagger back into the folds of his too worn traveling clothes. Anyhow, there may be another way you can pay your debt. I was serious when I offered to solve the strangeness that has affected this village." He looks the two straight in the eyes and gives them a look that only a man who has lead others into combat can give, If you agree to work for me, become my soldiers, at least until these matters are resolved, I will forgive your debts and give you two half of whatever the reward may be."

He stands tall now, assuming the demeanor of a general for the first time since his exile, eyes carefully appraising all before him and fitting it into some grand strategy. Resuming the mantle was like a breath of fresh air for Kovar, breathing a new life into him. Even in his ragged robes, no man could mistake him for anything but a leader of men now. "So what say you, will you take up my offer, serve as my subordinates for a time, wash away your debts and make some gold in the process?"

Trying to convince the guards to become Kovar's subordinates in lieu of having to pay him the money they own him. He's also promising them half the reward money. Turning on the charm and the generalness to get them to agree, in hopes that by the end of this little mystery they'll be willing to sign on permanently.

Powerful Charisma[+4] - To turn on the charm and get them to agree to Kovar's plan. Maybe even lay the seeds of loyalty within them.

Experienced General[+4] - Being a leader of men is something that comes from experience. Knowing just how to stand, what tone to use, what words to pick to inspire loyalty and confidence, these are all things Kovar has done time and again over his career as a general.

"And you may call me Kovar," the general responds. "Anyhow, to try and get the bottom of this, I'll need to know if there has been anything else odd that has occurred in the same time-frame. Even things that might appear innocuous could be vital. There has to be some connection between the recent goings on, and when we find that we find the true source of the problem.

"Oh, and would either of you have the coin to spare that I might get cleaned up and buy some clothing other than these rags. While being underestimated is fine enough for a time, it stops being effective now that I'm not alone, and I imagine the townsfolk will be much more likely to talk with a man in modest dress than a beggar."

Asking the guards if they know of any other strange things to happen in town recent, or know of anyone who might know. Asking them to include even innocuous odd things.

The general decided that an investigation into the mountain was warranted. After-all, it seemed to be the connecting factor to all the strange goings on. First however, the small group stopped by Algard's home so that Kovar could borrow a change of clothes. The bigger guard was hesitant at first, but once Kovar pointed out that it would quite possibly be less embarrassing for the man to be taking orders from someone modestly dressed than someone in rags he quickly assented. Once their detour was complete, and Kovar looked a bit more respectable they set out towards the mines at the base of the mountains.

Kovar is getting changed out of his rags so that he won't appear to be a beggar. Then heading towards the mines.

Kovar - Mining town in northwest Taeless

Kovar leads the small band up the mountain, commiserating with Jusep and Algard, attempting to raise their spirits as any good general would. When they arrive at the small mining town, he does not even have to ask about strange happenings as all the town is abuzz about a man name Adam. Rumors swirled about the change that had come over him. Stories claimed he had shrunk to half his height, his body all going into his beard. Other talk of a drunken tirade, where the little man drank a prodigious amount and started to rail at the "giants" all around him. The tales that most interest Kovar are of the strange man's mining miracle. Claims he found unbelievable amounts of metals from what were thought to be dead veins, doing the work of month in merely a day.

If these stories were true, this man would make a valuable lieutenant, after all what was an army without supplies, and anyone who could hold down even half as much liquor as was claimed must have a constitution that would put even the most seasoned veteran to shame. Even if he could not fight yet, it seemed this stranger might have the potential to make a fine soldier, not to mention a miner as well. The fact that all these happening fit into the same time-frame as the events from the mountain was merely the icing on the cake. And so soon, Kovar was at this strange man's door, his knock loud and commanding, his voice strong. "Are you the Adam the townsfolk speak of? I would like to speak to you."

Trying to cheer up, and by doing so inspire some loyalty in Jusep and Algard. Experienced General[+4] and Powerful Charisma[+4] to apply Kovar's experience as a leader of men to do the job.

Also, meeting up with Adam.

Kovar - Adam’s House

quote:

Adam: If there was one thing he was grateful for, it was that his bed seemed to have more space to sleep in. Or, in this case, to cower in. Which was what he was doing, head under the cloth covers when the knock on the door came

Adam: "Go AWAY! WE'RE CLOSED!"

***Kovar persists. This was too good an opportunity to pass up without at least trying. "I really would appreciate it very much if I could come and talk with you."

Adam: "Why! You wanna come in here and laugh?" He willfully moved into the corner, trying to shrink himself as best as he could "Ya'll alike you lot! Bunch a bastards!"

Kovar: Still yelling through the door, "I have no intention of laughing, and if it's making a scene you're worried about letting me in will be much less conspicuous than having me try and talk by yelling through your closed door."

Adam: The notion of Barbara readily eating brownies while avidly eavesdropping from her kitchen window was more terrifying than another human taking the mickey out of him. He huddled himself under the covers, making sure none of him was exposed, before saying meekly. "The door's open..."

***Kovar opens the door and lets himself in. Realizing the delicacy of the matter at hand he silently signals to the two guards in his employ to wait outside and to keep them from being disturbed. Closing the door behind him the general enters the bedroom of the distressed miner.

Kovar: Surveying the room quickly, Kovar sits down in an open chair, "I hope you don't mind but I've been walking for quite a while now and I'd appreciate a chance to take a load off my feet." His tone is calm and normal, not showing any reaction to the man hiding underneath the covers in front of him.

Adam: He hadn't given it much thought at the time, but there was a strange sensation as the man spoke. Usually Adam was very much against people coming within such close proximity - it was why he left his brothers to do all the shopping parts of his chosen career. But the man had pretty much come in, taking a seat near his bed, and Adam hadn't batted a single eyelid.

Adam: Of course, that didn't mean he was going to jump out of the covers and embrace him as one of the family just yet

Adam: "Well la-de-da I hope ya wee walk around the mountains ain't gonna kill ya" He muttered from his safety blanket. "Now what do ya... Ahem... What do you want?"

Kovar: The miner was obviously in shock from whatever had happened to him, the General thought. He takes on a reassuring tone, "Now, I think things would be a bit easier for both of us if you would come out from under there. I give you my word of honor that I will not laugh."

Kovar: This was not all that different from calming a recruit whose nerves had been shattered by the horrors of battle

Adam: The words were quite comforting, and Adam considered them for all about three seconds, before the images of last night's description started to run through his head. The idea of the ridicule he was going to receive when he got out of the covers, the mess he had caused, the length his beard had grown, all of it joined with an odd, tough feeling somewhere deep within his chest. Something different. Something stubborn.

Adam: "W-w-w-why should I? You don't need to see me to tell me what you want! Just say it and be done with it!"

***Kovar sighs. "Very well, but you're going to have to come out of there someday. Hiding won't make whatever happened to you go away. As to what I want, I want to meet you. I've heard a number of rumors around this town, and to be frank, you intrigue me."

Adam: "Why? I'm just a smith with a beard. There's nothing special about me. You should see my younger brother. He can whistle through his nose."

Kovar: "Whatever you were before, now you have suddenly changed height, grown a beard, and if rumors are to be believed drank enough to kill a normal man and did the work of 20 men in the mines. How could anyone with an eye for talent not be interested?"

Adam: The words came slowly, like he was carefully watching his tone in case it suddenly changed. "Because I'm just a normal miner, in a normal town, with normal problems in my life. Like making sure I have some money stashed to help my brothers out. Like wondering if the pretty girl at the pub will ever think of me as more than just a customer. Like having two kids and dying in my sleep. I didn't ask for this. I don't want to be talented or special or amazing. I just want to be left alone... in a mine... with an axe... and maybe a very short woman."

Kovar: "Which is pretty much impossible now. I can tell you that as the rumor spreads I will not be the last to come and seek you out, and I imagine others will be less... discrete and less concerned with your wellbeing. With that in mind, do you mind if I ask you some questions. Your situation strikes a chord with me."

Adam: A defeated sigh came out from under the covers, followed by a half-hearted "Sure thing..."

Kovar: "Can you tell me when this all occurred? What happened in the lead-up to the change?"

Adam: There is another pause from under the covers. "Sometime... two nights ago. I don't know what happened, but I went to sleep feeling just fine... and I woke up... well... like this. I tried to go through my day as normal as possible... but apparently that's easier said than done."

Kovar: "Would this have been the night of the strange comet?" The general sounds excited.

Adam: "What stra...." The body underneath the covers shifted, a strange thought came into his head, "Wait... the... the stars! There was something strange in the sky... I remember trying to... do something... I.. I can't remember it well because I passed out."

Kovar: The same night he awoke to his own power, this was certainly more than mere coincidence, and only served to redouble Kovar's determination to recruit the strange miner. "Indeed, it seems that something momentous has occurred that night, I doubt we two are the only ones affected."

Adam: "Wait... wait you're shrunk too?!" He pulled the covers down, exposing his eyes and red hair, the eyes previously lit up now looking dejected "Oh... nevermind."

***Kovar smiles broadly, "No, my gift is different, let us just say that it would do well to not play chess against me. Ah, but how rude, I haven't introduced myself. My name is Kovar, once of Mirn but now of nowhere in particular." He extends out a broad and weathered hand towards the figure under the covers.

Adam: He stared at the hand before gingerly reaching a stubby palm from out of the covers towards it, taking it with a firm Shake. "Um.. Adam. Adam Lebron. Mirn?"

Kovar: The general gets a far off look and his voice turns somewhat wistful, "An island nation, between the two great continents, a verdant and beautiful land."

Kovar: In his distraction he doesn't realize he has failed to release the smaller man's hand.

Adam: Adam quietly lets the hand stay, not wanting to upset any more people than he already has. "An island huh... sounds pretty far away. You came all this way to come see little ol me?"

Kovar: Realizing what has happened, Kovar pulls his hand back, somewhat embarrassed by his mistake. "No, sadly, that is a much more... tempestuous story." A shadow crosses his features for a moment, but then it is gone and the confident charisma of the general returns. "I came to a nearby town and heard tell of strange happenings on the mountain. When I came to town I heard of you, and came at once to find you."

Adam: He cocked his head, feeling like his missed something important. "Well, at least you didn't have to travel too far. Nice to meet you Kovar." He pulled down the cloth further, now exposing his face and beard. "I hope it wasn't too disappointing. I mean, you got, what, super smarts, and all I got was itchy regrowth."

Kovar: "I think you are selling yourself short. I am... was..." he appears indecisive for a moment, "no, am... a general, and if even half the rumors are true you have yourself some extraordinary talents that would allow you to be quite the soldier."

Adam: "I cannae be... Ahem... I mean, I don't want to cause a problem, but... um... I'm not exactly soldier material. I'm more of a quiet smith..."

Kovar: "Trust me, I've trained hundreds of men. If the stories of the mine and the tavern are true, in terms of raw potential I'd put you in the top 10."

Adam: "Well. Gosh.. I'm glad someone still has faith in me after last night... but potential or not, I would prefer not having to do any kind of fighting. Ever. Again."

Kovar: "As I said, you may not have a choice in the matter. You've changed, I've changed, who's to say we're the only ones. More than that, when what has happened too you gets out there will be others who come, and they may be willing to do terrible things to coerce you to fight for them." The general smiles again, really turning up the charm, "So you might as well do it on your own terms."

Adam: The covers slowly started to rise, now returning to the level of his nose "But... but... but I don't... why would... why would... can't we all just.. talk about this?"

***Kovar moves to calm him once more, "Calm down, I don't intend to make you do anything you don't want to do. However, my own past has taught me that those born into noble blood have much less consideration for the rights of the common man."

Adam: "Common? I can do common! I'm the most common man you'll ever meet!" His eyes light up as he speaks. "If I just do what people say they'll just leave me alone... right?"

Kovar: A sad smile crosses the general's features. "I'm afraid not, not anymore." He sits back to ponder for a time, before he speaks again, "I guess I should explain myself, perhaps then you will understand that fate that awaits you if you simply hide in this room for as long as you are able. Would that be acceptable to you, this might get a bit long."

Adam: "Uh.. just give me the just-got-out-of-bed-and-feeling-the-shame version"

Kovar: "Very well." Kovar gives a brief explanation of Mirnian society and the total domination the nobility holds over it. Then he tells his own tail, his rise, the noble's rebellion, his appointment to High-General, the campaign. Then he tells Adam of the king's betrayal, the conspiracy with the defeated nobles that cast him out and ended up bringing him here.

Adam: He listens quietly, face stern, seemingly wanting to say something halfway through, but doesn't until the end. "So.. your theory, is that if this... this comet... is changing people, well.. how many people is it going to change? is it going to come back?"

Kovar: "I don't know, but I do know that once other figure out what I have things will change. Even if they never do, what king can resist the perfect general, or a soldier with the strength of ten men. What won't they do to possess those things? I have already seen a king throw away a victory to , to have men tortured and framed without a hint of remorse, and that was merely to destroy a rival."

Kovar: It looks like it pains him to tell Adam this, "You will not be able to hide, neither will I." His sadness turns to determination, and it is clear that he is at heart a leader of men, "So I offer you an alternative. Serve me, and though you will not be anonymous, you will at least not be a spectacle in some royal court."

Kovar: "With your power and mine, perhaps we will be able to forge through the pain of war a better world, or at the very least a slightly less unjust world, that is also safe for us."

Adam: "Um... um... um... Can it involve less war?"

Kovar: "That's really depends on the decisions of others. I'd prefer not to have to fight, but there are times when it is necessary. Either way, you are as useful in a mine as on the field, but there are times when you'd have to fight. Especially early on, I don't really have a complete army yet. At least, once you show you can fight I imagine the people will be much less likely to laugh at you."

Adam: The covers lowered again, now this time stopping at his shoulders. "I'm... I'm not much of a.. um.. I dinnae know..." His words trailed off, as he seemed slightly lost in thought. However, the fear of moment before was passing, and he slowly began to calm himself, his voice taking a less emotive tone. "I don't know what your army is going to do, but I don't like getting into trouble. Also, I don't really have an army. Can I ask you something?"

Kovar: "Go ahead."

Adam: "I'm... I'm not very good with people... so.. how about.. this.. can you.. you know.. talk to them for me?"

***Kovar gives a comforting smile, "I'd have no problem with that. Really, if you worked for me I'd end up doing most of the talking anyhow. After all, with my new power I think I can be rather confident that I'll make some mark on the world, and what better place to hide then right next to me. People will be too blinded by my ascendance to notice you except when you want to be noticed.

Kovar: "Why, if you prefer, once I actually have the funds, you could fight in full armor so enemies never have to even see your face. It might not truly disguise you due to your height, but I imagine it would provide you some distance from them in a figurative sense."

Adam: "Actually..." he says lifting a hand beneath the cloth, "I could always make you a set. I am a smith too you know. Alright. This sounds ominous, and if we're lucky, we won't have anyone trying to fight your army just because they're there... Uh... where IS your army?"

Kovar: "As I said, I don't have one yet. I've only just started to build one, for the moment it's just two guards who have agreed to aid me to work off a debt. I'm hoping that by that time they'll have come around and will sign up for good. Building an army is a strange thing, it's slowest at the start. Don't worry though, my plans are already in motion in terms of getting an actual army and not just 2 men and perhaps you."

Adam: "Ah... well, um... I guess I could be army member number.. uh.. three..."

Kovar: "Good, I was hoping you'd say that." Kovar's smile is magnetic, "Now perhaps you should come out from under those covers, so I can get a better look at you and see what you can do."

Adam: "Yes. Certa..." he began to take the covers off, before pausing, and bringing it back up again. "Ahem.. Apparently.. uh.. I seem to have put myself in a state of undress when I got home last night. Do you.. um... mind?"

Kovar: "Just put on some undergarments, I'll have to examine you to make sure there are no obvious problems anyhow." Kovar turns around.

Adam: Quietly, he sets about putting on a pair of trousers, taking time to note that some of them have been cut at the tips to suit him. Sometimes, he mused, having brothers can be pretty handy. Finally, out of the covers, he stands aside the bed, at 4 ft, well toned thick muscles on his arms, a pot belly he did not remember ever having, and a ginger beard that spread all the way to the centre of his chest. "Ahem.. you can turn around now..."

***Kovar turns around. "You don't mind if I examine you do you? Make sure you don't have any obvious impediments. It's something I've done many times before."

Adam: "Ah... s-s-s-s-ure... I.. ah... Ahem... Please... uh... Do you.. mind.. Just.. uh.. I'm not used.. to being.. ahem.."

Kovar: Without delay the general rises and moves to examine the dwarf in a workmanlike fashion. Looking him over for obvious deformities, without asking he lifts Adam's arms to examine them and get a feel for their range of motion, he moves the dwarf's head examining him closely. When he's finished he returns to his chair.

Kovar: "You can get dressed now. I can confirm my earlier statement about your potential as a soldier."

Adam: "Sure. Thing. Thank... You.." He quickly threw an oversized tunic on, struggling not to feel quite awkward about the situation. "Well, soldier or not, what's the plan now?"

Kovar: "Well for the moment I'm investigating the strange goings on around the mountain. I'm not sure if you're connected to them, but I think it's unlikely. When there's time I'd like to give you and the two others some combat training, so that if we do run into trouble we'll be prepared. In the long-run I'm looking for a base of operations I can recruit from."

Kovar: "I've been meaning to ask, why are you so ashamed about what you have become?"

Adam: He looks away, straightening his tunic in embarrassment "It's... its not that I mind.. I mean, I work better, I would probably eat less, and at least not clothes won't be so expensive... It's just. I don't like making a scene. Of anything. I just want to do my work and be left alone. Big changes like this, they make me a centre of attention. Something I don't like. At all."

Adam: "I'd rather just be good old Adam."

Kovar: "Just a piece of advice, the more ashamed you are the more people will notice you. Be proud of what you become, revel in it, and the attention and ridicule you fear will fade away. Others see as normal what you see as normal. If you decide that what you are is normal, then it will soon be normal to the others as well."

Adam: "Well la-de-da. Thanks. Can you go talk to the townsfolk now?"

Kovar: "Sure, but you're coming along. The more they see you, and the more they see you next to me the less they'll care about what you've become."

Adam: He seemed to resign himself, and eyes looked downcast. "Alright. fine. Just... just don't make a scene... alright?"

Kovar: "Oh, the more of a scene I make the more eyes on me, and less on you."

Adam: "Just.. not in my name then?"

Kovar: "Of course. After all, you work for me now, it's only natural that I'll end up shouldering whatever notoriety you've gained."

***Kovar gives another magnetic smile.

Adam: "Ah.. whoa.. not work for you..." he interjected. "Partners."

Kovar: "In private, but in public it's an excellent ruse to draw attention towards me and away from you."

Adam: "Aye... good point."

Heading outside once more, Kovar silently signals the two guards that gawking at the new recruit would not be tolerated. Then with Jesup, Algard, and Adam in tow he makes for the center of town. Finding several copper pieces in a pocket of the borrowed clothes, he finds a child and offers him a copper to gather up the townspeople, promising two more if he succeeds.

Once most of the people in town were gathered, they gawped and whispered in Adam’s general direction. Kovar, discretely allowed this to continue under the appearance of waiting for the stragglers to gather, seeming oblivious to the dwarf’s discomfort until Adam had reached his breaking point. Adam, the general reasoned, needed to become at least somewhat used to having attention focused on him as it was going to happen in some form one way or another, also letting stress build and then coming to the rescue was an easy way to build up some loyalty in the dwarf.

As Adam tried to quietly shuffle away, he felt a strong hand on his shoulder holding him in place. Kovar smiled down at him as though he just realized was happening then he turned towards the crowd and began to speak. “I was the one who called you all here today because I have an announcement of some import.” Whatever attention was on the dwarf suddenly and instantly shifted to Kovar. The three beside him had felt the pull of his charisma, but never this strongly. The general was a man in his element, his voice deep and steady, his bearing noble and strong, that he was still unkempt and in modest guard’s clothes and cloak was forgotten immediately as his voice passed over the crowd. “Something strange and wonderful has happened to Adam,” he gestures to the dwarf, but much to the small man’s relief the crowd’s eyes never falter from the taller man. “But that is not the reason I called you here, it was to announce that Adam has signed on with my company.”

“Yes, he is a man of extraordinary talent. I’ve heard you all talk of his exploits. That he has signed up should tell you something, that I am building an army of extraordinary quality. So I put it to you, would you miss a chance to become part of such an organization. I’ve lead many a force in battle, but what I plan to create will put every army in the world to shame. For those who join, if you put in the effort to excel, a life of adventure and glory await. How many among you have been pushed around by bandits or corrupt officials, join with me or support me and I will help make you and your town stronger than its ever been.” The general’s speech went on, using many of the rhetorical tricks he had learned during his time as High-General when he had to essentially rebuild units from scratch in cases where their predecessors had defected to the noble rebels.

By the time he was done, he hoped to have the crowd, and also his existing recruits in the palm of his hand, eager to join up and be trained by him. Any number of recruits would be welcome, but if he played his cards right he might get the entire town to join up and become a base for him to operate out of.

Most of all he was interested in securing the loyalty of the dwarf. If his hypothesis was true, then there were many more with powers granted from the falling stars, and more he could recruit to his cause the stronger he’d be. Perhaps strong enough to retake Mirn in years instead of decades.

Chat with Adam. Also, Kovar is trying to sway the townsfolk(and Jesup, Algard, and Adam) into following him and swearing loyalty.

Powerful Charisma[+4] - Kovar’s natural charisma in on full display here, easily giving a stirring speech to a large crowd.

Experienced General[+4] - Part and parcel of being a general is getting men to follow you. Knowing how to get them to give up their peaceful lives to fight, and maybe die for you. It’s something Kovar has had to do many times, especially since the royal army was so full of defections due to the bribery of the nobles. It came down to learning to recruit men who could resist any offer to betray their leader and their comrades and recruit a lot of them or die. With those stakes, Kovar was a quick learner.

Hearing the strange voice, Kovar knew that coming to this town was the right move after-all. First he had found Adam, and know he had found what in all likelihood the force behind all the incidences surrounding the mountain of late. Looking down to his smaller companion, the general's hand still firmly on his shoulder to steady him before such a large crowd. "It appears that the source of the strange incidences and attacks against the other towns of the region has revealed itself. I'm not sure I like the look of it either, the light and the gasses are perhaps a bit too hearkening back to my homeland. This mountain wouldn't happen to be a volcano would it? Based on your feat in the mines earlier, I surmised that your power might have some connection to earth or stone, so is there anything you can tell me?"

I'm gonna say Mirn is volcanically active, what with being an island in an archipelago with a large mountain. And as someone famous for fighting on that mountain, Kovar knows a bit about volcanoes.

Kovar quickly follows the dwarf. "A resident of this town you say. Unexpected, but not impossible that two of you should be changed by the star-fall. This is quite the town indeed." Easily catching up with Adam, Kovar falls into a silent reverie. The mentioning of swallowing him up, the activity of the mountain, the happenings in the other town, and the revelation that this was likely a villager transformed as he and Adam had been. These disparate facts all tied in with the others seemed to indicate that a some level of control over stone, earth, or perhaps just this specific mountain was in play. Working upon that hypothesis, Kovar worked out the places where one such empowered would naturally go, turn his own prodigious gift to the task. After-all, deducing enemy movements and strengths was one of the cores of a general's arts.

Assisting DDwarf in his search:

Experienced General[+4] - Knowing where to find an enemy and to reason out their plans is the most basic skill a general can possess, without which all others are useless. So now Kovar turns that knowledge and skill to the task at hand.

Divine Strategy[+2] - His experience and his power mesh all too naturally, as the god-to-be ponders where his potential enemy might be located.

Kovar - Sellos

quote:

Kovar: As the tree of possibilities unfolded before the general a single path was infinitely clearer than the rest. The man, if he was still a man, likely had some control over the earth or the mountain. He was likely with the gold mine he had found, too deep to reach safely. Kovar shared his conclusions and reasoning with his dwarfish companion.

Kovar: "It seems a direct confrontation is impossible for the moment."

Adam: "Easy for you to say..." Adam replied, his face red. Felwen's message had gotten him riled up, the idea of someone else he knew being changed as well seemingly too good to be true. "You don't have to work the mine daily. He's a good lad, one of the boys, and by darn it I am going down there to see him if I have to dig through all the ore this side of Taeless!"

***Kovar sounds concerned, apparently the dwarf was not as retiring as he first assumed, "And do what when you get there? You don't know the first thing about fighting or negotiation. And I doubt even your supernatural constitution could withstand the lava-flows that are in the area now."

Adam: "Lava flow... What the heck is lava flow? I just want to go save my mate" As he speaks, his voice takes a subtle northern tone, and his eyebrows furrow stubbornly.

Kovar: "I made my name fighting around a volcanic mountain, and those cracks and the gaseous emissions are all too familiar to me. Whatever he is, he is clearly either reviving this mountain or transforming it. Where he is there will likely be flows of molten rock that would burn you to cinders in an instant."

Adam: "Oh... Oh.. But... But doesn't that mean everyone in town could be in danger?"

Kovar: "Not just this town, but all the towns around the mountain, which is exactly why I'm so worried about this."

Adam: "Well... You're the thinking man.. Any ideas? If you can just get me to talk to him, I'm sure we can sort this mess out."

Kovar: "Well we know with some certainty that he can hear sounds of a sufficient noise within the town square. Otherwise he wouldn't have responded to my pitch. Where else he can hear and how loud one has to be to be overheard outside of those two factors are unknown as of yet. It seems like calling him out to parley in a location safely away from the town is our best option for the moment."

Adam: "So... What, we just yell at the ground until he pops out to play?"

Kovar: "Well it's certainly our first and best option. One way or another we need to meet him face to face."

Adam: "Uh... " he looks about, suddenly self conscious. "Are ya sure? We'd look a right pair'a loons if ya wrong..."

Kovar: "I really think that with all that's been going on here of late people will barely notice. After-all, what's yelling next your change and a talking mountain."

Adam: "Aye... Good point. Well if ya so confident, take the first shot". He steps aside, gesturing to the ground.

Kovar: "All in due time. First, I think we'd be better off if you knew how to handle yourself if it comes to blows."

Adam: He cocks his head "uh.... Excuse me... Don't we have more pressing concerns?"

Kovar: "Yes, but I think the odds of your friend being in his right mind are not as great as you seem to hope, and if it comes to a fight I'd rather have you fighting at my side than getting yourself hurt."

Adam: Squints, giving Kovar another stubborn look. "I'm sure I can handle myself just fine if I wanted to, thank you very much. Can we deal with Fel, as soon as... Say... Now?

***Kovar is tempted to show Adam how unprepared he really is, but thinks better of it. "If you say so, but don't blame me if you get hurt."

Adam: "Good!" He exclaimed, crossing his hands and feeling incredibly pleased with himself. He stands like this for a good five seconds, before quietly muttering. "Um.... Seriously is Lava that bad?"

Kovar: "You're done some smithing right? Ever seen molten metal?"

Adam: "Ah..." Okay it be best to go with your idea after all"

***Kovar nods approvingly.

Kovar: "Well, might as well do a bit of both. I mean who knows how long it will take him to respond anyhow. Plus, a little bit of training might to wonders for your confidence."

Adam: "Alright... Lead the way. I am warning you now though, I am not leaving Feel down there to rot."

Kovar: "Leaving him there to turn the mountain into a volcano is certainly not on the table."

Adam: "Well... Good... And.. Uh.. Kovar?"

Kovar: "Yes."

Adam: "Thank you... You know... For helping..."

***Kovar gives a nod. "We who have the power, also have the responsibility to aid in the ways we can."

Adam: "Aye... I hear that"

“Now, while we’re on our way to a safe spot to try and parley, I’ll give you your first lesson, the first step in a long road. The most basic thing you must re-learn is how to see the world. I don’t mean that is a philosophical sense, at least not yet. Rather, you must widen your gaze and be ever aware of your surroundings. He, watch me for a minute.” Kovar quickly demonstrated the concept in action, showing how he quickly gained a working knowledge of the space around himself, and how through subtle movements of his eyes and head he kept an active idea of where everyone in his area was.

“Now, you try.” Adam’s first attempt was awkward and far too obvious, but it was a good start. As they walked to the place most likely for a safe parley, Kovar corrected Adam and walked him through the means to achieve their end step by step several times. He also provided him with exercises to hone this skill and tested him. He hoped that, by the time they arrived Adam would have this first brick of his foundation as a soldier down pat.

Beginning Adam’s(as well as Jusep and Algard’s if they’re here) training in the art of soldiering while they walk to a place to Parley with the mountain-creature. First he’s learning how to see like a soldier and maintain spatial awareness.

Experienced General[+4] - Kovar has trained more troops than he can count, and he has the method down to science.

Powerful Charisma[+4] - It takes persuading to get people to convince people such basic changes are necessary to the art of soldiering, and an engrossing teacher is a teacher more able to bring about change in their student’s behaviors.

I'm trying to teach you to quickly pick up the important details even in a place you'd never been to before. Anyhow, we're here."

Kovar looked around for a moment, "I guess we should test if my theory is correct." He cups his hand's together and yells into the mouth of the cave, "Fel, we know you can hear us. We just want to talk."

"It appears I'm not wanted for this conversation. Jessup, if you'd accompany Adam." Leaning over to the guard he whispers, "Keep an eye on him, the change has left him somewhat emotionally fragile, and I'm afraid he might retreat back into his shell if pushed to hard by events. If he needs it, feel free to encourage him." Now at an audible level, Kovar continues, "Algard, you're with me. We're heading back to town to try and win the townspeople over. I don't think Fel will respond aggressively, and with what just happened it's more important than ever to move my plan forward."

Kovar sighs, "It's proof that there are malicious forces out there, the world has begun to move and if we don't forge the people in the towns around the mountain into the foundations of an empire, then some other entity will swallow them up, and there's no telling what happens then. Now, I'm going to start doing what I can for the town. I'm relying on you to convince Fel to join with us, it's the only way to truly protect the town." Kovar places a reassuring hand on Adam's shoulder, "I'm entrusting this vital mission to you, but I wouldn't do it if I feel you couldn't handle it. You've got tremendous potential, and sometimes you just have to dive into the deep end. Now, get going."

Kovar turns to leave, and Algard falls in step with his employer. Once they get to town the general intends to search out problems one of his particular talents can fix. He hadn't been lying to Adam, with the catastrophe he had so recently sensed, winning over the townsfolk and forging them into an empire had just a goal to an absolute necessity.

Once he arrived in the town, things began to naturally fall into place. It started with the guards, with a good word from Algard and a little show of his prowess with a blade, they were willing to accept some instruction on how to better use their truncheons. The haze that had lingered over him on the walk in was dispelled quickly as he returned to doing what he was best at. The guards led him to some of the shopkeepers they frequented who were having trouble keeping their shelves stocked. Once, Kovar realized that the same principles that governed keeping an army supplied applied to keeping a stores supplies in order, a few critical pieces of advice and a demonstration helped set them on the right track. The shopkeeper recommended him to a friend who was stuck in an intractable dispute with a customer. Kovar acted as a mediator, his natural charisma and commanding presence an aid in helping both sides reach an acceptable solution.

These were, however only the start of Kovar's campaign to win the townspeople and he continued to apply his skills to the advise the people of Sellos.

Sending Jessup to keep an keep an eye on Adam and help in case things go south, then giving Adam a little speech intended to boost his confidence.

Next, heading into town in order to try and win over the townspeople by helping to resolve problems in the town.

Weaponmaster[+2] - To give the guards some instruction on how to better use their truncheons, and any other problems that can be solved by applying the forms and motions of the various weapons Kovar knows how to use.

Experienced General[+4] - To organize the inventory systems of the merchants, since it's basically the same rigamarole that army logistics is with shelves instead of troops. Also, to know what problem Kovar can solve with just advice and what need deeper involvement.

Powerful Charisma[+4] - To mediate disputes by helping to convince both sides to compromise in a way that they might not get what they want but they feel the outcome is fair. Also to just generally charm the townsfolks while doing other tasks.

Kovar and Adam - Sellos

quote:

***Kovar had just finished resolving another dispute between to merchants. A shipment had been lost to bandits and so one was behind on their payments. The general had helped arrange a compromise between them to allow both businesses to weather this unfortunate incident.

Kovar: Sitting with Algard on some stones just outside of town, Kovar was taking stock of what he'd done to this point.

Adam: Adam had spent a bit of time with the locals, listening in on Kovar's activities. It took a while, but he eventually found him, and approached, with Jess in tow.

***Kovar looks up at the approaching dwarf, his features a mix of relief and pride in Adam. "You're back, and Jusep is as well, how did things go?"

Adam: He looks down at him, frowning. "We need to talk. Privately."

Voice: As long as he's willing to listen.

Kovar: "Of course. Algard, Jusep, one of the merchant offered me some drinks, why don't you take him up on it on my behalf, just keep the tab reasonable."

Algard: "Sounds fair to me boss." He says and saunters over to the bar.

Kovar: "There, now what did you want to discuss?"

Adam: He draws up closer, his lips pursed, his eyes downcast. "Kovar... Fel is dead."

***Kovar suppresses his shock. "What?"

Adam: "He died. Turned to stone. Stopped breathing. He's still down there, because he's too big to carry out, and I wanted to tell you first. But that's not important. I need... I.. I need ya ta telll me what you plan with this village."

***Kovar puts a hand over Adam's shoulder, "I'm sorry, you said he was a friend of yours. Are you sure you're ok?"

Kovar: The general sounds genuinely concerned for Adam.

Adam: He looks up, fire in his eyes, and his accent deepens. "Ah speart ye a question kovar... please answer. whit ur ye plannin' fur mah haem?"

Kovar: "If you're sure you're fine." He looks out at the horizon, his voice becoming less emotional and more explanatory. "I've told you before, I want to forge this place into the beginnings of an empire. This world is changing, there will be more like us and the current status quo will fall apart. When that happens the current borders, the current powers will change. When that change comes it means everything will suddenly come into play, new kingdoms will be born, and the old ones will lash out in hopes of survival. They'll look for any weapon or resource available, and that means us.”

Kovar: “Those with powers like us will become the most valuable resource, and every nation will seek to exploit us for their own ends. I'm been there, and I'm tired of being exploited. So, before the status quo falls and they come looking for whatever advantage they can find I want to forge this town into the seed of an empire that might cover the world. The wrenching wrongness that happened those few hours ago convinced me that this is the only option. We need to build a kingdom, an empire on the values we prize, because otherwise we'll be swallowed up by whatever that horrible darkness that came into the world was."

Adam: He watches him silently as he speaks, quietly noting his words, then takes a breath, catching his own voice back. "If you plan, on making Sellos a kingdom of it's own, to prepare for this inevitability of war... then you swear to me, right here and right now, that you will do your upmost to preserve it, and keep only the interests of the people here at heart. I swore to Fel that I would not allow bloodshed on my land... can you make me that promise?"

Voice: He talks about being tired of exploited,

Voice: But now he wants to exploit us?

Voice: Is that right?

Voice: Isn't that exactly what Fel warned me against?

Kovar: "No, bloodshed will happen, it's as inevitable as the tide. Sellos is not only a mine, but a strategic cross-roads between Taelless to the south and the lands to the north. Even if we weren't here, with that combination war would come either way and that means blood will be spilt. Anyone who would tell you that they would be able to prevent all bloodshed would be lying to you."

Kovar: "All I can promise, all any general can ever promise is to try and minimize casualties. I want to teach these people to defend themselves and to eventually expand so that the least amount of blood will be spilled, but make no mistake, blood will be spilled here. I can merely try to squeeze a river down to a trickle."

Voice: Will he be fighting too? He makes a pretty speech about the sacrifice of others but where does *he* stand on the spilling of blood and risking his life for others?

Adam: "And where will you be standing on risking your life? You just plan on teaching people? Then just buggering off to go start another empire elsewhere in Taeless?"

***Kovar's anger flares up, "How dare you!" He lifts up his loose fitting shirt to reveal his chest criss-crossed with scars. "I've spent my share of blood, and no doubt I'll spend yet more."

Kovar: "What do you know of war miner, how much have you bled for men under your command, how many nights have you been unable to sleep remember the faces of men you had to send to their deaths so many times their number could live. People will be injured, and people will die, and I'll live with that for every day of my life, but without someone like me this town will be a ruin."

Kovar: "If Sellos is not prepared to stand on it's own it will become a plaything between the northern and southern kingdoms, a source of endless back and forth. Then, eventually some overzealous fool will raze the place to deny it to their enemy. I don't do this out of jest, I plan this because there is no other way for Sellos to survive."

Voice: Who would raze Sellos?

Voice: None in Taeless would destroy the mines, they're too valuable.

Voice: Val Aman likewise would want to control it.

Voice: And Konwey is on the opposite side.

Adam: "Damnit shut up!" He screams out loud, before catching himself, biting his lip.

Voice: I could help you, you know.

Kovar: "What!" Kovar stands up, his face crimson.

Voice: Just think of me being there.

Voice: Give me a form.

Voice: A body.

Voice: It's so simple.

Kovar: Letting out an inheld breath, he calms himself down, "Maybe the death of your friend harmed you more than you know."

Adam: "No not... not... Ah by the stone itself I didn't mean... Sorry.. my thoughts aren't very clear. I can't.... Damnit I just want to be left alone..."

Voice: Because you have me locked up in here.

Voice: All you need to do is let me out.

Kovar: "What? Did something happen to you in the caverns? Maybe something related to Fel's death?"

Adam: "Wh... what? Let you..." He looks up at Kovar, eyes burrowed, a hint of fear in his eyes. "I... I don't know what's wrong with me Kovar... I can't think straight."

***Kovar kneels down and grabs Adam's shoulders, he looks the dwarf right in the eyes, their faces inches apart and says as calmly as possible, "Ok, Adam. I want you to focus on my voice and only my voice. Can you do that?"

Voice: Then let me out of your head! I don't want to be stuck here either you know.

Adam: "I don't want you in my head either! What the hell are you," he says, eyes glassing over, his confusion of voices and people conflicting. "I don't.. I know Kovar.."

***Kovar brings all his considerable charm to bear on the dwarf, "Just focus on my voice, Adam. I can help you, just focus on me and breath. In... 2... 3... Out... 2.. 3.." He begins to repeat this.

Voice: You don't want me in here, then listen.

Voice: You can either get really mad at him and I'll pop out, or you can try and imagine me a body.

Kovar: "In... 2.. 3.. Out... 2... 3..."

Voice: No stop that.

Voice: Please,

Voice: I have been stuck without a body for so long.

Kovar: "In... 2... 3... Out... 2... 3..."

Adam: He takes a moment, taking a breath... "In... out.... 1... "

Adam: He takes a moment, taking a breath... "out... body...."

Adam: He takes a moment, taking a breath... "2.... 3...."

Kovar: "Now, I want you to let my voice guide you, guide you to some place safe. Some place you feel totally safe. Describe it for me."

Adam: "1... 2.... 3.... 1... 2.... 3.... 1... 2... 3.... It's.. its my smithy... by my house... its warm. I keep it warm.. it's safe. It's quiet. It's fun..."

Voice: The smithy...smithy...that would work.

Voice: Take us there, make a body for me.

Voice: I can go into that.

Kovar: "You're safe here, safe and relaxed. Whatever else is happening you don't need to worry about, just listen to my voice and think of this safe place. In... 2... 3.. Out... 2... 3..."

Adam: "Alright..." He begins to imagine a smithy in his head, he goes there... he concentrates... "I'm here.. at the smithy.... come... come here... 1.... 2... 3..."

Kovar: "I want to help you, you want me to help you right? But to help you, you need to tell me what's happening. Don't worry you're in a safe place and I'll protect you, so tell me what's happening."

Kovar: "You're safe, but you're confused. Tell me what's happening, but don't make decisions, not yet. Not till you're no longer confused."

Voice: Adam, suddenly you feel a splitting headache. Both of you then hear Adam say "Shut up. Shutupshutupshutup. I am so close and you're ruining it. Go play soldier elsewhere."

Voice: It's Adam's voice, but it doesn't sound like Adam.

Adam: "What the devil is... aaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.......... I can't.. I can't focus..."

Kovar: "You're not Adam. Adam, listen to my voice, only my voice. Focus on my voice, let it be the only thing in the world. You're safe and relaxed in your safe place, there's something inside you something bad. It wants to hurt you, but I can protect you. Imagine my voice in your head, imagine it telling the bad thing to go away. "In... 2... 3... Out.. 2.. 3.."

Adam: "I'm trying.. but.. I.. I don't know if... I.. it's so loud..."

Kovar: "Trust me, Adam, you need to trust me and relax. I can protect you, just let my voice be the only thing in the world, let it drive away the bad thing. Imagine my voice in your head telling the bad thing to go away."

Adam: "1... 2.... 3.... I... I think... I am trying... 1.... 2.... 3... smithy..."

Voice: Adam I am trying to do this nicely. But I'l do it the hard way if I have to.

Kovar: "That's it, relax, I can protect you. Let my voice drown out the bad thing, drown it out so you don't have to listen to it anymore. If you hear only my voice you don't have to listen to it anymore. Relax and let my voice carry you someplace it doesn't know. Imagine a beach, the cool blue waves lapping the shore."

Kovar: "In... 2... 3... Out... 2... 3..."

Adam: "What... what does a beach.. look like.."

Kovar: "Imagine white sand, it's warm and nice and safe, now keep looking and you can see the water, more water than you think could ever exist, it's so blue and so inviting. You feel safe and relaxed as the sun beams down on you."

Adam: "Sun.. beam... sorry... never been.... sounds... nice... Voice... please stop.."

Kovar: "This is Mirn, my homeland, feel the warm sand beneath your feet. Know that I'm with you, protecting you here in my home. Relax and tell the voice go away. Hear me tell it, 'Go away and leave Adam alone, he's under my protection.'"

Voice: Adam your head suddenly burns with pain, your vision swims as you grab your chisel and stab yourself in the arm. It hurts like heck for a second and leaves a cut the length of the chisel that starts trickling blood.

Voice: Your blood looks different than you remember.

Voice: It's supposed to be red, but this one is more coppery in colour.

Voice: Adam stabs himself and then seems quite surprised.

Voice: As for Adam, you can now think a lot more clearly.

***Kovar grabs the chisel. "It's weak now, that's why it's trying to hurt you. Don't feel the pain, let my voice carry you once more to Mirn, to the beach."

Voice: At any rate, Adam feels like the voice is gone now.

Adam: His eyes light up, and he bites back a scream. "Easy fur ye tae say, ye didne jist stab yerself wi' a bludy chisel! OW!"

Kovar: "Relax, feel the warm sand, let the safe feeling take the pain away."

Adam: He clutches his arm, his breath returning, and he closes his eyes. "Warm.. sand... warm... sand... warm... sand..."

Adam's Shadow: Kovar, while Adam closes his eyes you notice his shadow is *moving*

Adam's Shadow: It's sort of pooling into the spot where his blood fell.

Kovar: "Stay on that beach, feel me protecting you, you're safe as long as I'm there." Kovar slowly draws his dagger, the one symbol left of his life on Mirn, "Now breath deep and relax," With the prowess of a master he drives his dagger into the pooling shadow.

Adam's Shadow: You drive your dagger firmly into the ground.

Adam's Shadow: The ground seems to not be greatly injured by your attack.

Adam: "This.. this beach is a little open Kovar... And it's not really letting the pain go away..."

Kovar: "Ok, take a deep breath, In... 2... 3... Out... 2.. 3.. I'm going to push you back a few steps. When you feel me push step back, Ok?"

Adam: "1... 2... alright..."

***Kovar gently begins to push against Adam, aiming to move him back enough where his shadow will be far enough away to hinder whatever was happening.

Adam's Shadow: As Kovar pushes Adam back the shadow splits,

Adam's Shadow: One remaining in the shape of Adam standing where his blood spilled,

Adam's Shadow: And Adam's shadow returning to himself.

Adam: "...you know... I don't know what you did, but I would really like to open my eyes now."

***Kovar grabs up his dagger, and sheaths it. It appears physical force would have no effect. "You can do that, after another deep breath."

Adam: He takes a deep breath, then opens his eyes, clutching his injured hand. "I.. I feel better now. I can't really hear it anymore. I think it's name is Balasomething..."

Adam's Shadow: Now that you are no longer crowding the shadow, the earth itself rises up and forms a body that looks a lot like Adam.

Kovar: "What are you foul creature!"

Adam's Shadow: Once the form is created it becomes fleshy, wearing a replica of Adam's clothes.

Adam's Shadow: It skin is darker and its eyes a ruddy red tone.

Adam: "Wh... wha... WHAT ON EARTH IS THAT!"

***Kovar once more unseaths his dagger.

Kovar: "That would appear to be the voice that was controlling you."

Adam's Shadow: "Ah, I ken feel the scent 'o the wind in my lungs again."

Adam's Shadow: It takes a deep breath and sighs.

Kovar: "Answer my question, or you might find your new life a short one. What are you?"

***Kovar stands prepared to strike at a moment's notice.

Adam's Shadow: "Ye be Kovar if I be right?" It asks, turning to look at Kovar.

Kovar: "That is not an answer to my question. You have one chance left."

Adam: "Hey! Ye talking like that! I don't bloody talk like that!"

Thadroin: "Ye may call me Thadroin." It says with a curious glance at the knife.

Kovar: "And what are you Thadroin?"

Thadroin: "I do not ken that, maybe ye should try askin our friend Adam. Perchance he knows more than I."

Kovar: "You know what you are, you no doubt are the voice that was plaguing Adam, so tell me your nature, I command it."

Adam: "I... I.... wait... were you what... where you what Fel said he was passing on?"

Thadroin: "Aye. He thought I be the demon singing in the darkness and kept me locked away. I was once a man, now...I cannae say."

Kovar: "So you claim you are not a demon?"

Adam: "more importantly.... Why are you here? Looking like me. Talking like me. Doing... me... things..."

Thadroin: He responds: "If I were, would I need beg for a body?" And his eyes flash angrily at you.

Thadroin: "I had to take what I could get. Ye would not give me a body so I made one. It left an...imprint"

Thadroin: Adam on the other hand, feels a connection to Thadroin.

Adam: "Oh... well... sorry... you could have asked nicely or something. Instead of doing the whole 'foolish human' thingy."

Kovar: "A demon has already wrenched it's way into the world, why should I trust you?"

Adam: "Wait... it has? what?"

Kovar: "Your story, and the wrongness. It's the only logical outcome."

Adam: "Come back to be point before.. Demon wrenching?"

Kovar: "I told you before, my power is Strategy. When it happened, I felt a new player step upon the stage. With you're story, I imagine it's a demon or something along those lines, it's the only pattern that matches the facts."

Adam: "Wait... could that be this Balamory person Fel was talking ab - WHAT AM I SAYING! THERE'S A MAN WHO LOOKS JUST LIKE ME RIGHT HERE!"

Thadroin: "Because ye felt it coming from the west. Fel felt it too. This be not the west." He replies rather bluntly.

Adam: "So.. what.. what are you doing? What happened to you? Why were you in Fel? Are you.. were you what kept him alive?"

Kovar: "Well, if you're truly not a demon than what I said earlier applies equally to you. Unless you're willing to help establish Sellos as the seeds of an empire, you'll just end up as the slave of some other power."

Thadroin: "Well...I remember a void, black and deep. I got meself stuck there somehow but it was long ago. Then I got called here. I was floating around and felt an empty body, but it wasn't, so I got stuck in Fel." The character says, stroking his beard thoughtfully.

***Kovar sheaths his dagger. "So what do you say, are you willing to sign on?"

Adam: "I don't think he has much of a choice... if he came before, it means he might know what caused the Starfall"

Kovar: "Either way, I'd like to hear it from him."

Thadroin: "I have a debt to Adam, so for the time being I feel I be bound to him." He says and makes a bow to Adam.

Thadroin: This seems odd...for many reasons.

Adam: "Uh... what now?"

Thadroin: "Ye gave me a body and we be bound by blood, you and I."

Kovar: "Well, for the moment, I think we should return to the plan. The clock is ticking, we have to forge Sellos into an empire, and you into at least a passable soldier."

Adam: "Oh. Ah. Well that's all well and good Kovar... but you know what... it will have to wait till the bloody morning. I have had a very. Very. Long day... and I have a friend to bury."

Adam: He holds his head and shakes it. "I just... I just want a break. And for someone to patch up my arm."

***Kovar tears a strip off his guard's uniform and wraps it around Adam's arm as a make-shift bandage.

Thadroin: "Ah, my apologies for that, ye did not seem want to listen but."

Adam: "You could have asked nicely, instead of getting in my head and confusing me!"

Kovar: "Yes, the desperate attempt to seize control right after the wrenching wrongness made you seem quite malicious."

Thadroin: "Ye try living without a body for god know how many ages."

Kovar: "True. Anyhow, are you willing to sign on with me for the plan?"

Thadroin: "I'll do whatever Adam does. But, have ye considered just moving the town under-ground?"

Adam: He rolls his eyes. "Alright. you two. Talk away. I am going to get this seen to." And with that, he just walks off, clutching his arm.

Kovar: "Tell the apothecary you're with me. He owes me a favor."

Kovar: "I don't think moving the town underground is a real solution, because it's still the biggest piece of infrastructure by the mines."

Thadroin: "But if the entrance to the mines was also the entrance to the town, then invaders would have a big door to deal with right?

Thadroin: "And they'll have a spot of bother getting through a foot thick door of solid stone I ken."

Kovar: It makes the town more defensible, but doesn't solve the root problem of the town being invaded. It also won't prevent another kingdom with access to beings of power from simply demolishing it."

Thadroin: "What would you do? Make the town fly?"

Thadroin: "Ye say it makes the place easier t'guard and say it won't help either. Make up yer mind."

Kovar: "Because it doesn't matter how defensible this is if there is no one who knows how to defend it. No matter how high the walls if the whole world falls to whatever the hell that was in the west the town will fall with it. The only way to survive what is to come is to be pro-active. Make Sellos into a power of its own. Build it into an actual future for the people and for us."

Thadroin: "Ah, but do the people lust for conquest, or be that just you?"

Kovar: "It's hard to say, but what I can say is that I do not do this lightly. The future for Sellos has boiled down to two options, conquer or be conquered, and with whatever just came into the world out there I think waiting for it to tear down the world is a fool's play."

Thadroin: "Well then, ye best remember that Adam be entrusted the safety of this town. Bring not danger more than already comes lest he may decide it be you that must go."

Kovar: "I trust Adam, and he trusts me. I'll do what I think is best for the future of this town, and he knows that."

Thadroin: "Nay, ye wish him to trust you, and he ye take to away his problems. Trust takes time to build, not a few quick words from a silvered tongue. Believe me, all a sudden I know plenty o' silver."

Kovar: "Oh?"

Thadroin: "Oh what?"

Kovar: "You just hinted at your past. Who were you before you were Adam's shadow?"

Thadroin: He shakes his read with a thin smile on his head.

Thadroin: "Ye mistake me words. I know about silver because Adam does. Like Fel had, he changed a few days as far I can ken. I made meself anew of his blood and shadow, along with the Earth. I ken things he ken because I was in his head."

Kovar: "So, you have no memory but Fel's and Adams?"

Thadroin: "A man forgets a lot when he have no body ye see. I remember a few things, the smell o' roses, dusty tomes and mould on stone. That be all. Glimpses, fragments of a life so far gone it be like the twinkling stars in the sky. Those...are real...I hope."

Kovar: "Hmmm... Well, at least you seem to have picked an excellent person to imitate."

Thadroin: "Flatter chance not me, I took what was given to me."

Kovar: "It was as much a compliment to Adam, in truth. Anyhow, do you at least intend to give my plan a chance?"

Thadroin: "As I said, be it Adam's will I shall. I have a debt of blood and debts must be repaid in kind."

Kovar: "And when your debt is paid, what then?"

Thadroin: "Who can know the future but the gods themselves? Civar keep the sun and moon turning and we'll see what the morrow brings."

Kovar: "Who's Civar?"

Thadroin: "A god from whence I came methinks. The words came from the heart an' not me head."

Kovar: "Interesting, if more flashes come let me know. Any information would be useful for the plan."

Thadroin: He reaches into his jacket and finds a coinpurse. "I be glad it be not just a body I copied. Food be a memory long gone, one I plan to renew." He says and starts to head towards the tavern.

***Kovar follows behind him. The old maxim of keep your friends close and your enemies closer coming to mind, and spending a day solving problems does work up an appetite.

EXCEED CHARGE
Kovar - Sellos

quote:

Adam: Adam sat in the middle of his workshop, hands over his head, a quiet moan escaping his lips. He looked up at his workbench, and went back to his previous state, the moan louder. In front of him lay various weapons of fantastic design and sharp edges, well crafted and cleaned. They were all axes. Adam had been daydreaming that afternoon.

***Kovar enters softly. Looking over to see Adam moan, he sits himself down in a chair before he asks in his kindest tone, "Want to talk about it?"

Adam: His head doesn't rise, but he bemoans a reply: "Noooooooooo..."

Kovar: "I really think you should, it's better than moping here all day. I mean the townsfolk have really started to warm to the new you."

Adam: "....Aye... I mean yes. They really have. Things are looking up. Work is good. People seem friendly to me, despite my stature, and the little girl down the road hasn't pulled my beard all week." He looks up, frowning terribly. "But I still can't stop making Axes and talking funny when my mind isn't focused."

Kovar: "Hmmmm... I may have something that can help with that, but first I think we need to talk about your shadow."

Adam: He put his head back down, sighing as he does so. "Great. This conversation. Oh joy."

Kovar: "I know you seem to have a bond with him, but I just want you to be careful. There's something... off about him, and I'm fairly certain he's lying to us at least about how much he remembers."

Adam: A pause passed, then Adam brought his hands down, looking up at Kovar. "Wait... what do you mean?"

Kovar: "He mentioned something, the name of a god, a god I've never heard of anywhere in Taeless or among the townspeople. Civar."

Adam: "So? Taeless is a drat big place. Could be from a different part of the world. Maybe where you have those beaches thingys."

Kovar: "Right, but he said he had no memory outside your's and Fel's. Anyhow, all I ask is that you be careful, I'm convinced he has his own agenda, and we have no way of knowing if it benefits us or not."

Adam: Adam looked over at Kovar, taking time to turn to face him, then folded his arms. "So... let me just get this straight. You're telling me, directly, that the person that suddenly appeared in my life after I got shrunk and addicted to ale, the person who seems to want to help the town not be destroyed, the person who has appeared and is presently helping the town, who says they wish to teach...

Adam: ...me and train me to be a better man, has his own agenda and that I should not trust him... right?"

Kovar: "When did he offer to train you. According to him he only knows what you already know?"

Adam: "while he was in my head. He said he could help. Help me be a bit braver. Speak my mind more. Kinda what I'm sort of doing right now."

Kovar: "I'm not saying he's malicious, I'm just saying be careful. There's more there than meets the eye."

Adam: "There's more to the stranger in my town than meets the eye. Got it."

***Kovar sighs. "Anyhow there was another reason I wanted to talk to you."

Adam: He smiles, mostly to himself. "Yes. What can I help you with?"

Kovar: "It has to do with the directed imagery I used, from when your shadow was still in your head."

Adam: He frowned. "You mean the beaches."

Kovar: "Yes, there is a reason I knew how to do that. Back on Mirn, I was part of a group we were called Weaponmasters. We can use any weapon with surprising mastery."

Adam: "What, you're a smith as well as a general?"

Kovar: "No, I mean wield it in combat, my knowledge as to their making is only enough to maintain them. I could demonstrate if you like?"

Adam: He looks around, then rises, slamming his fist onto the table. As the various weapons rises, he reaches out and catches the highest one, before turning it's hilt to him. "Alright. Outside?"

***Kovar takes the strange axe, and after a moment to adjust to it's weight runs through a close-quarters kata, deftly maneuvering it in the enclosed space.

Adam: Adam very carefully moves himself to the back of the smith, grabbing the wall as he does. "I said outside! OUTSIDE! I have to work in here!"

Kovar: "Alright." After adjourning to an outdoor location, Kovar demonstrates a far more complex kata, maneuvering the strange axe as though it were an extension of his own body. Once he was finished he adds, "I could do the same with pretty much any sword, or flail, or mace, or dagger, or staff, or any other weapon no matter its weight or shape."

Adam: He claps, giving Kovar a thumbs up "It's fine, I believe you. You can wield a freshly made weapon like it was made for you and all that. That must have taken a hell of a lot of training..."

Kovar: "Less than you might think. The Weaponmasters were an ancient tradition with each practitioner taking on only one or two students in their lifetime. My own teacher," Kovar pauses and a deep sadness creeps into his voice, "Well, lets just say I miss him greatly."

Adam: "Oh... I'm sorry to hear that..."

Kovar: "Anyhow, the bond between teacher and student is a sacred one, but because of my career and all that has happened I was never able to take on a student. There was never anyone I felt had what it took to succeed, until now."

Adam: He cocked his head, eyes burrowed. "Wow... you don't want me to trust Thordin, but you are willing to take him on as a student?"

***Kovar smiles. "It is not him I'm talking about."

Adam: "oh..." He scratches his head... "I know Delgor from the market has been passing you sutsanas from his trip to the city, but he isn't really fighter material, with the gammy leg and all..."

Kovar: "It's you, you are the one I want to take on as a student."

Adam: "Oh." He nods... then his eyes widen. "Wait... wh...what do ye pure techt you're takin' me oan as a stu -" He catches himself, gulping before continuing. "That's gotten rather harder to stop lately - What do you mean you're taking me on as a student! Are you daft? I'm a smith! A very short smith! You need to save this for some kind of superior lethal killing machine somewhere!"

Kovar: "I've said it before and I'll say it again, you've got the raw potential to be one of the best soldiers in the world. More than that, you would be the first Weaponmaster who was also a smith so the possibilities there are also impressive, but there's something else. It more than any of that, I can't fully explain it, but I know now you are the one I was meant to teach."

Adam: "But.. but you've only known me for... what.. a moon? I don't know if weaponry and me will go hand in hand, at all. I've never been fond of any kind of brawling..."

Kovar: "I said before, I can't explain it, I just know. I'm certain, as certain as certain can be. Also, as part of the training you'll also learn to focus your mind. It might help you with your axe-making fugues, and if nothing else you'll be able to deftly wield any ax you make no matter how strange."

Adam: He holds his forehead, a drained look on his face. "Oh... oh... oh I need to think about this... I mean... I don't.. just... just give me a moment..."

Kovar: "Well I'd want to explain what this would entail before you make any decisions anyhow. The combat between teacher and student is a sacred one, and its only meaningful if you agree freely and knowingly."

Adam: "Then... what am I in for then? what does this..." he waves his hands, trying out a new word "entail?"

Kovar: "Well, first off it's secret. You'll need to swear to never reveal what goes on to anyone except your own student, if that day ever comes. As for the training, well it relies on the directed imaging I mentioned. It will let you pick things up much faster but there's a side-effect."

Adam: "...will I suddenly lose my body size and have a fondness for axes? Because you're a little late for that..."

Kovar: "No, but it's likely you'll become somewhat more... receptive or suggestible to me, not that you'll be able to tell. It varies from person to person, I was hit with it really hard, at least that's what I was told, as I said it's very hard for the student to tell."

Adam: He takes a step back, eyes narrowed. "You mean... I'm going to follow your every whim. Praise you for everything. Lay down my life for you. Trust you implicitly."

Kovar: "It varies from person to person, but it's not that strong. The most likely effect is that you'll give me somewhat greater weight than other people. Think of it as what happens normally between a teacher and student, but a bit more."

Adam: "But it does happen. You're asking me to basically bare my soul to you. I mean, like you said, you have no idea how strong it can be. So I could turn into a midget pet."

Kovar: "That outcome is highly unlikely. This is why I told you before you decided. The bond between teacher and student is one of trust. I have to trust you to not reveal the traditions secrets and you have to trust that I won't abuse our bond."

Adam: "...why is it so hard for you to just say yes?"

Kovar: "Because I really do want you to be my student. It's a very important decision to make this offer, it's likely to be the only time I do it in my lifetime, and I might be the last remaining weaponmaster. My own teacher, my own order and they're gone and its probably my fault. I finally come across the one I want to be my student, and I'm afraid you'll say no."

***Kovar is bearing his own soul a bit to the dwarf.

Adam: He folds his arms, looking away for a short while, muttering under his breath. "You didn't have to make it sound so bad..." He turns back, taking a breath. "Alright... Fine. I'll do this weaponmaster thing that you want... but on three conditions."

Kovar: "What are they?"

Adam: "Alright. First up, I... uh.. reserve.. um... well.. " he coughs slightly. "I reserve the right for a favour from you. Unconditional. No matter what it is. If it's in your power to do it, and I ask you, then you do it. If you're possibly going to be in my mind and make me even more loyal to you than I am before, then I want to have a safe place to fall back. It will.. it will help me cope more."

Kovar: "That's perfectly alright."

Adam: "Secondly... well... this has to do with the Lebron family honour. The craft of my fathers and the fathers before them has been passed through from eldest son to eldest son. And they come with a teaching. Always pay your dues. If you wish to teach me something that much important to you, your family, and your people, then I am obligated to teach you mine as well. Starting tomorrow, during sunset, we will smith. Every day. With my sharp nose, mining has been easier to do, so most of my afternoons are free. Then, when we finish smithing, we will head to the pub and toast. Every time. That is the Lebron way."

Kovar: "I had wanted to learn how to craft, as I said, a weaponmaster who could shape their own tools would be a powerful force indeed. Plus, getting to know you better is an excellent perk. If you would teach me your craft, I will give it the honor and respect I ask you to show when I teach you the traditions."

Adam: "good then it's settled.... one.. final.. thing..."

Adam: "could we... um... start with Axes?"

***Kovar smiles warmly, "After seeing the results of your day-dreaming that is where I had intended to start. Although just so you know you'll be starting with a wooden training instrument shaped and weighted like an ax. Nothing with an edge until I'm satisfied you will handle it safely."

Adam: He nods, taking a breath. "Alright then... well... what are you waiting for? We should celebrate! Drinks are on me!"

Kovar: "Will do. Although we'll have to put off your first day of training and mind for a couple of days. Tomorrow I need to head back down the mountain to the town where I met Algard and Jussep. The town had offered a reward if the cause of the strange incidents could be found and stopped, and I gave my word to those two that if they followed me up to help they'd get half the reward. Once that is resolved and they decide if they want to go back to being guards, or stay in my service I'll come back up and we can start with you teaching me to smith."

Kovar: "Now, let's get to the tavern."

Adam: "Come along. I heard the landlord saying something about honey made Ale and my mouth just started watering." He walks for a bit, then stops, looking back. "Someday, you will tell me about why you're the only weaponmaster.. won't you?"

Kovar: "Let's just say when the king decided that I needed to be taken out of the picture, my teacher was one of the ones he took to his prison. Needless to say, I don't think he was pleased with my teachers response, and the king was not a man to take an insult lying down." Adam can hear a deep and abiding hatred in Kovar's voice.

Adam: "...us and that King... we're going to have words someday, aren't we?"

Kovar: "If I have anything to say about it, he won't have many."

Kovar: The normally jovial general is now as cold as ice.

Adam: "I see... come on then. Th' ale willnae bevvy itself."

***Kovar follows.

EXCEED CHARGE
Kovar - Sellos

quote:

***Kovar walked up to Jusep and Algard after his night drinking with Adam. The general's head throbbed dully as spoke to them. "So, it appears the problems with the mountain are over, which means once we return to the town and collect the reward your debt to me is forgiven. Before we arrived there I wanted to talk with you two about the future."

Jusep: "I see. Well Algard's not much one for thinking about anything past meal time so I'll hear what you have to say and translate for him." This earns him a glare from Algard which he meets with a wry smile.

***Kovar gives a gentle laugh. "Well, now that you no longer owe me money and you'll have half of whatever the reward is to split, what do you plan to do?"

Jusep: "Honestly, I had been planning on returning home and probably trying to see if I could catch me a wife before my hair turns grey."

Kovar: "Well I was wondering if either of you would be interested in signing on with me long-term?"

Jusep: "How much will you pay?"

Algard: "Why?"

Algard: "I mean, why pick us?"

Kovar: "Well, because you've already proven you've got the guts to face down a living volcano. Also, you actually managed to pick up on the lesson I was trying to teach Adam quicker than most."

Jusep: "Yes but you want to make an army and go conquer...somewhere. That's not how things work in Taeless. Everyone fights until we pick a winner and then we divvy out prizes and go home. I know what you said to Adam, but I don't believe it. I can see it in your eyes, you want something more than just this town. It's just...like a step up the tower you want to climb. We're just guards, Algard's a fat whiny bastard and I'm mostly a laid back coward who doesn't care enough to really do anything unless I absolutely have to. You can talk up going into the mountain as much as you want, but in the end it was because I needed to pay my debt and because you said I should. You can do better than us, someone who knows about leading people into battle, someone who believes in causes and laying down their lives for them."

Algard: "Speak for yourself Jusep, I would fight for what I believe in." He replies hotly which causes Jusep to look somewhat surprised.

Kovar: "I've never hid the fact that Sellos is the start of something bigger, there's a reason I called it the seed of an empire. Anyhow, you've seen me and Adam and Fel and now Adam's Shadow. Do you really believe the status quo of Taeless can survive the coming of beings like us, and trust me when I say I'm now certain there is something terrible and evil lurking in the west."

Kovar: "The way Taeless has done things is dead, and it's time to adapt or die. Beyond that, for all you prevaricate you went into the heart of a volcano to face a being who had transformed and potentially controlled a whole mountain, and you'd only known me for less than a month, and you were cool the entire time. I've known soldiers who would kill to keep their cool like that. Even if what you did was ordinary, the world is changing, and I need men I can trust working for me, and you fit the bill and then some."

Algard: "So why. Why do you want an Empire?" He says which Jusep thinks. "What would you do with it?"

Kovar: "Because I've seen how things are done, I've watched friends and comrades who shed blood for my sake and who I shed blood for locked up and tortured just because some damned king wanted to, I've seen nobles grow fat and act superior just because of their birth while men worth one hundred of them starved. I want to make a place where none of that happens, where if you have the right to command it comes because you're drat good at it and you won't abuse it. I've seen Taeless and heard of other lands and none of them fit the bill, so I might as well make it myself."

Kovar: "That used to be the only reason, but now there's another. There's something out west, something more horrible than I can possibly describe," the battle-hardened general unconsciously shudders at the thought of that awful feeling, "something that is just so fundamentally wrong it should not exist in the world. If we don't take steps to be ready for it, it'll consume us all. So I want to make a kingdom that can stand up when it comes, a place that is fair and right and just, and I want your help to do it."

Jusep: "So, what would you have us do then?" Jusep asks with a serious expression. "Neither of us know much beyond standing guard in a village where nothing happens."

Kovar: "Well, naturally I'd finish your training in soldiering. In the long term I'm thinking you'll end up in command positions, since the one thing you can't teach is strong nerves, which you two showed you have in abundance. I'm going to have to train an entire army from scratch, not for the first time, so your current lack of skill isn't a problem."

Algard: "And how will you pay for all this? How will you feed us, your army?" He says and Jusep rolls his eyes and mouths 'pig'.

Kovar: "Well to start with there's my half of the money from the reward. Also, I get the feeling that with Adam around we won't lack for funds. Once we get some people I'd like to start taking jobs from nearby towns to start to build some trust to make things easier later."

Jusep: "Tell you what, you find me a wife and you'll have my loyalty for life." Surprisingly he seems fairly dead serious.

Kovar: "Well I'll certainly do my best. What about you Algard?"

Algard: "I dunno. I don't really have anything better to do, it's not like much was going on back home."

Kovar: "So you'll sign on?"

Algard: "That's what I said."

***Kovar smiles, "Well then, I guess the first order of business is to head down to collect that reward, so I can pay you two your share. Then we find Jusep a wife."

WIth Algard and Jusep in tow, Kovar heads back to the town at the base of the mountain, to collect the promised reward.

Heading to pick up a reward.

EXCEED CHARGE
Kovar - Town in NW Taeloss

"That may be true, but you're gonna have to find one willing to live up in the mountains, unless you want to marry a girl and never see her again. Also, I made a promise to Adam to return shortly, and I don't go back on my word. So we'll head back to Sellos first, and if there's no one there that draws your eye, I'll be glad to broaden the search." Kovar gives Jussep a winning smile, "Plus, I'd be willing to wager Adam might be persuaded to give you a little gift to help you down the road, and with his nose for gold and gems you might get something to really help you seal the deal should you meet the girl of your dreams."

As he lead the pair back to the mining town, Kovar engaged them in idle chatter, at least that's what it appeared on the surface. In fact, he was trying to learn as much about them as he possibly could, these two had a bright future and the best way to make sure it came true was to know them inside and out. Plus, knowing what to look for was a good start when looking for Jussep's future wife.

Trying to subtly learn all the personal info I can about Jussep and Algard on the way back to Sellos.

Powerful Charisma[+4] - To use Kovar's charm to get them to open up.

Experienced General[+4] - A good general knows how to put his troops at ease, and how to build a mental profile of potential officers.

EXCEED CHARGE
Kovar - Sellos

quote:

***Kovar returned to a town set adrift, to say it was unexpected would be an understatement. He quickly set out to find Adam to learn just what had happened while he was away.

***Adam was, in the meantime, well and truly in despair. Thadroin had been to visit - and had not long left - him at the Fel Forge near the mountain hovel, and had left with him sitting on his own anvil, his head in his hands, and a very intricate crown on the table in front of him.

Kovar: Hearing from the town's folk that Adam could be found in the mines, Kovar leaves Jussep and Algard to try and piece together what happened while he heads down below. He quickly runs into a small carved out area, and sees Adam sitting. Calling across the room he asks, "Are you alright?"

Adam: "No."

Kovar: "Can you tell me what happened? Half the town seems to be missing."

Adam: He seemed to shift, then looked up, seeing Kovar. "Oh. Kovar! You're back! Ah. Um..." A very sheepish grin spreads across his face, and behind his now partially plaited beard -wait, he thought, why on earth am I playfully plaiting my beard? - he felt his face turn rather red. "Um.. we might need to talk."

Kovar: "I had guessed as much when I arrived. What happened? Are you unharmed?"

Adam: "Oh.. Oh I'm fine. Personally, I'm alright. Well... maybe my ego's taken a bit of a hit... but I'm fine. It's the rest of the village you're going to have to worry about. Uh.. I may have... and I don't know why... but I may have asked them to become... like... me..."

Kovar: "What do you mean?"

Adam: "I think... well, I know can now but.. I made... them... into me. Short. Hairy. Really good with axes. Like this." He gestures to himself, standing bashfully.

***Kovar is intrigued, "Truly? Tell me about what happened, give me every detail."

***Adam begins to tell him of the events that unfolded, from the time that he spoke to Thadroin in the river, till the speech, till his voice changed.

Adam: "And I dinnae new what would happen..."

Adam: "...but when ma voice changed, suddenly a word cam poppin out like a wee babae... Dwarf... It feels... it feels bloody good it does."

***Kovar ponders for a minute. "I think I can guess why this happened."

Adam: "So can I.." he said, a soft smile forming, "but I'll let ya take a wee crack at't"

Kovar: "It's you. It may be some effect of our condition, but as people started to follow you they were changed."

Adam: "Aye. That much I gathered... hence.. well.." he took a breath, catching his accent again. "Hence, the speech. It's... it's a little more complicated than that. You and Thadroin have made it very blunt. Things are different now, and sooner or later, the bad is coming. Especially if it has anything to do with the man Balatharkoth or whatever Fel called him. Maybe it already has. Maybe we're too late...."

Kovar: "What do you mean?"

Adam: "Not sure if I told you this before, but Fel was saying that this Balathar person, he called for people to spill blood in his name. So if he ends up coming here, that's what he will want from us. The last thing I promised Fel before we passed, was that I would have no blood spilt on this land. like I said before, if the world is changing, then we have to change with it. Until the world...

Adam: ...changes with us. So, when I made the offer, I knew things would change. I just... well... didn't expect it to be so drastic."

Kovar: "Well, this really isn't that bad, all things considered."

Adam: "It is when they make you a crown Kovar."

***Kovar laughs, his voice deep and hearty. After a moment or two he controls himself, "Is that what you're so worried about?"

***Adam flashes Kovar the dirtiest look he could muster. "This is serious! It's a crown! Like a king! I'm not a bloody king, I'm a very exhausted smith with a beard threatening to plait itself and and unhealthy fondness for axes! By Stones and Ores I hope Thadroin was joking about this!"

Kovar: "Are these new 'dwarves' happy?"

Adam: "...well..." he cocked his head slightly, frowning. "yes."

Kovar: "Then it's a pretty natural reaction on their part. They respect you, they're willing to follow you, it's why they were changed."

***Adam grunts, rolling his eyes with dejected resignation. "Fine. Alright. I'll give you that. I have a bit to talk to you about that too... but after you tell me what happened. Come on in. Take a seat."

***Kovar takes up a stool close to Adam. "I'm afraid my story is far less interesting."

Adam: "Believe me," he says, leaning on his forge. "I can do with less interesting right now."

Kovar: "Well, I managed to get paid, and Jussep and Algard decided to stay on. Oh, and I agreed to find Jussep a wife."

Adam: "Wait... what?"

Kovar: "That's his condition for staying on, I need to find him a nice girl he'd be willing to settle down with."

Adam: "...uh... you do realise I just turned this place into a dwarf... fortr... no... village?"

Kovar: "Yes, but one of the hallmarks of a good general is the ability to keep cool and analyze any situation."

***Adam shrugs, flashing another soft smile. "hope Jussep loves himself a short woman..."

Kovar: "And if not there's still half the village out there."

Adam: "Good point... that reminds me. I... um... I have a bit of a plan."

Kovar: "Well we're also going to have to talk about the remaining villagers. They seem... adrift."

Adam: "That's part of it. I have an idea... but.. give me a moment." He stands up straight, taking a deep breath, and closing his eyes. There was a moment of silence, as he once again reached into himself, trying to find the source of the courage he had come to find when speaking to his 'people'. When he opens his eyes and speaks again, it brims with confidence and strength.

Adam: "Sellos is a toon Ah loove. a toon 'at we aw loove. but whit if it coods become mair than 'at? reit noo, within th' mines, heard workin' dwarves dae their best tae bend metal an' staine intae somethin' amazin' an' new. an' Ah am nae a body tae gonnae-no them. "

Adam: " it thaur, thaur ur fowk fa huvnae yit heard ay us. ay th' fowk ay sellos. ay dwarves. ay us. sae suin. it will be time tae shaw them. Ah will gang ben th' fowk haur. fin' a select few 'at ken their way aroond th' warld, an' wish tae see mair. train them. shaw them th' best ay mah ability."

Adam: "then Ah will send them tae th' fower corners ay th' earth tae practice their craft. be uir representatife. if fowk loch whit they see, they will come haur. tae sellos. whaur they will fin' us waitin' tae greit them wi' open arms. it will be toogh. it will be stoaner. but wi' us... it can be dain."

***Adam he took another deep breath, and his stature slouched, returning to normal.

Kovar: (English translation?)

Adam: ((I will train dwarves, and send them to the four corners of the earth to practice their craft, and have them send people here who want to learn.))

Kovar: "Well it seems like it just wasn't the town that changed. Although I'd urge you to think very carefully about your plan."

Adam: "What do you mean?"

Kovar: "What happens if some tyrant or greedy noble hears about you and decides he wants you all to himself? What happens when he sends an army?"

***Adam eyes deepen, and the soft smile comes again. "Well, it won't come to that Kovar. You'll prepare me."

***Kovar thinks for a second. "It won't be just you that needs to be prepared. The townsfolk left on the surface are distraught and without direction, they need a new purpose and I think I can kill two birds with one stone."

Adam: "I understand that, Kovar. Hence, why I need you." He stands up and takes a short breath again. "I need you to see for me. Your eyes are, drat I say it... the greatest thing I have ever seen. In people, in places, in life, you see all, you understand all. I am no nobleman, nor am I a general. But with you, I would have better than a chance against both. And for that same reason... I need...

Adam: ...Thadroin as well. He understands me better than I thought. By the Stones," he paused, rotating the word in his head, "By... the Stones... yeah... By the Stones, he was in my head long enough to get how I think. If there was ever someone whom could show me where I was going wrong, it would be him."

Kovar: "Then I'm going to attempt to turn the town above into an armed camp. The people there are longing for a new direction, and if you're plan is to work there needs to be a credible force to prevent outside attack. It'll also be the seed I have long talked about."

Adam: He nods. "Armed camp huh. I see. Why don't we work on a compromise. We need a wall."

Kovar: "Well, somewhere between a fortress and a city is what I had in mind."

Adam: "And that sounds like a plan to me. When I get people settled in, we can aim for a fortress. Built by Dwarves."

Kovar: "It also bears testing whether what happened to you is unque to your power or whether any who follow me will change as well."

Adam: "That makes a good point too," he says, sitting down. "Of course, my plan is going to take some time. Maybe even whole seasons. till then we still need to know what to do with the people up top. the town is... well.. empty. I was thinking... although it's a terrible idea... that maybe we should find more people like us. Try and get them on our side. But I don't know how in the world I would start looking."

Kovar: "Well, nearly half of the original population of Sellos is up there, and you don't create an army overnight. It'll take months of training and preparation."

***Adam smiles. "We have months to prepare them. But these are both long term plans. In the meantime, I have dwarves to teach, and you have speeches to give. Oh, and we have a lot of forging to do."

Kovar: "I assume our original deal is still intact, I still want to train you, and still want to learn to forge."

Adam: "Naturally. And I if you wish to teach my people of Sellos to fight, then we have an agreement. Although..." he says, lifting his hand to his beard, stroking it. "Thinking about it... why.. don't we recruit people from the neighbouring mountain towns?"

***Kovar smiles, "As I said, the town above is meant to be a seed, a seed of something much greater."

Adam: "Aye, but like ye said, months it will taeke. Might as well find something ta do in the meantime."

Kovar: "Well, training the town and training you and learning to smith is going to be a full time endeavor."

Adam: "Aye... but that will occupy, perhaps seven of the tenday. Giving us three days ta take a break. so with the end of every Tenday, I say we see what our neighbourhoods are like."

Kovar: "Worthwhile. Though we may want to put one town on the bottom of our list."

Adam: "Oh? Which one? We need to broaden our horizon you know - finding Jussep a wife isn't going to be as easy as it looks."

Kovar: "Well, let's just say that the town Jussep and Algard are from were less than pleased that they decided to leave the guard and travel with me."

Adam: "Ah. Well.. good point... Keep that in mind and all that. Although," he says head tilted up high "Wives come first! It is our duty as... as... whatever the Ore we are, to reach out and help this man get himself a woman."

Kovar: "Oh, I know what to look for. Know anyone left among the unchanged who you'd say is a strong woman, one willing to take charge if necessary?"

***Adam shudders, biting his lower lip with a gigantic frown on his face. "Yes. Barbara."

Kovar: "She might be a good fit for Jussep then."

Adam: "I don't know... me and the brothers were her next door neighbour, and believe you me, that woman is not a good fit for anyone."

Kovar: "Jussep needs a strong woman in his life, he's not the kind of person who takes charge, he likes being lead."

Adam: "Oh.. oh she's a leader alright. She'll lead him to an early grave!"

Kovar: "Well it was worth an ask."

***Adam throws his arms in the air "Alright. fine. We'll ask her. But don't say I didn't warn you. Feisty is not a word strong enough to describe her."

Kovar: "Well he needs someone strong, but not dominating."

Adam: "Of all the people at the top, she's your best candidate. Most of the womenfolk are married around here. Believe me, if Barbara won't do, I will gladly take ye ta one of de local villages meself!"

Kovar: "Ok. Also, when shall we begin our mutual training?"

Adam: "Well, I say we alternate mine. I have the mines with Thadroin and the dwarves in the morning, I teach you how to make axes every second afternoon, and every evening, at dusk, we get to the training till you say we're done. Night time is a good time to do it. The others will be wanting to rest, and we won't be disturbed."

Kovar: "Good. I'll look forward to it. Also, I hope you'll be willing to teach me to make more than just axes. In the long-run I imagine we might forge whole new types of weapons never before seen."

Adam: "I know I know... I just.. feel better with them, that's all. I might try... I dunno... putting them at the end of a stick with a blade or something."

Kovar: "Well, although we'll start with axes, you'll be trained to master all weapons."

Adam: "That will take years... but I am prepared. We have a lot of work cut out for us."

Kovar: "Indeed. Let's get to it."

Returning to the surface, Kovar saught out this Barbara, to see if she was a good fit for Jussep.

Scoping out a potential wife for Jussep, so Kovar can keep his word and then get onto reshaping the remaining above-grounders.

EXCEED CHARGE
Kovar - Sellos

Once he had introduced Jussep to Barbara, he left them alone to get acquainted and see if it was in truth a good fit. While the two were getting to know each other, Kovar turned his mind to the town. Ever since he had gotten back he had noticed it, the air of listlessness and despair that hung over the place. Perhaps it was time to give them a way out, a new path since the old status quo was already dead.

With this in mind, Kovar headed back to the center of town. He found some people already there, unsure of what to do they had gathered to find solace in those left unchanged. Arriving at the edge of the small crowd the general spoke out. “I know this is a difficult time, all change is. The way things were is gone, and it’s never coming back, that leaves you and the town two options. You can wallow in despair, living in the past, in which case the town will drift apart. Already I’m sure some of you have realized that with the miners spending more and more time underground you’ll have trouble sustaining your livelihoods. Which means eventually you’ll have to move on to another mountain town if you can find one to sustain you or down to live in the slums of Taelos or serfdom in Val Aman.”

Slowly the crowd grows as rumor of the general spread throughout the disheartened town, “I want to offer you another option, don’t live in the past, don’t wait to be forced elsewhere. Sellos is a town that needs a new path, the dwarves will mine and mine and sustain themselves through trade, but there is a flaw in this. Eventually they will draw the greedy eye of a noble or a bandit lord, who will simply take what he wants. What the dwarf’s need is protection, and that is what a new future for you can be. However, it can be more than just that. With the funds and talent of the dwarfs combined with a well trained and competent army this place could be the seed of something so much more.” The general doesn’t notice when Algard, tired of waiting for Jussep and attracted by the commotion works his way into the crowd.

Kovar’s voice soars above the crowd as he lays out his dreams before them, pouring all his experience and charisma into making them as vivid for the townsfolk as they are to him. “Imagine a kingdom where nobles rise from merit and not blood, where the people are not subjected to the slavery of Taeless or the serfdom of Val Aman, where all have the chance to rise and not just the wealthy or the spawn of those with blue blood. I have seen the pettiness of the blood-nobility, I have seen them destroy the futures of men for slights real and imagined. I have seen them draw defeat from the jaws of victory paid for with the blood of patriots for their own end. I want to build a place where none need suffer such indignities, where no man or woman can rise to a position they do not deserve due to the accident of their birth, and I want your help to do it.”

“Some may doubt that such a dream is possible, but just as Adam has been changed so have I. Where he has shrunk and knows the earth as though it was his own flesh, I can read the flow of history, the flow of the world. You think this is but a simple mining town, but I tell you it is the crossroads of history. From this place a great and mighty kingdom can be born, a just place that will be the envy of the world, but only if you are willing to commit yourselves to it. The world is changing, and just as Adam has provided a new form and a new future for the miners, I want to provide a new future for you!”

Reaching this crescendo of emotion, Kovar stops, allows a pause to build. Then he continues, his voice more matter-of-fact, he has laid out the vision and the goal to the people and now he tells them the means to reach it. “Tomorrow, at the rock outcropping south of the town I will be training anyone willing to learn in the arts of combat. If you wish to embrace the future I laid out, be there bright and early and ready to work hard. If you want to wallow in the past that will never return then I wish you luck with wherever you eventually end up, because you’ll need it.”

Without waiting for a reply, Kovar heads back to meet Jussep. He would be out at the rock formation by sunrise as he promised, now it only remained to be seen whether anyone else would show up.

Trying to convince the remaining townies to embrace Kovar’s vision and come be trained to be soldiers. Kovar will be waiting just outside of town at a sufficiently large flat area for his purposes the next morning.

Powerful Charisma[+4] - To lay out his vision for the town and to move them with his speech.

Experienced General[+4] - There’s a trick to speaking to crowds, a pattern you need to follow, a pattern Kovar knows because giving speeches to convince troops to fight, or people to sign up to become troops is how a general spends pretty much all the time he’s not fighting or planning.

EXCEED CHARGE
Kovar - Sellos

Kovar looks over the people who’d arrived for training. He’d spent the whole prior evening coming up with exactly how it was he was going to train these people. At first it seemed to be an insurmountable problem but fairly quickly after running into that wall, he felt the power well up deep within him and the every potentiality fell into place the solution obvious. So here he was the next morning heartened by the appearance of so many. ⅓ of the town was double his minimum number to make this plan work, and by the end, if things went as he knew they would, he’d have pretty much all of them.

“I’m glad you accepted my offer. Now, I hope you’re ready to work hard, because soldiering isn’t an easy life, but what it is, is the best chance you have. Now, lets get down to business.”

The first exercise was getting them into formation. Nothing too complex, just something rectangular something with enough space for him to move through it and observe as necessary. It went as well as one might expect from a bunch of completely new recruits, but that was the point. It had provided Kovar’s keen eyes with more information than any of the townsfolk had realized. As he watched time seemed to stretch out, and just as how he could see the moves of the games of strategy he could see so much more about them, suddenly as plain as day. He had seen how the moved, saw how they carried themselves, saw a small smattering of leaders, and saw who were the natural followers. He’d learned in just over an hour what would have once taken him days to figure out.

“Alright, this formation is the one you will be in every morning at sunrise on the dot. If by the time the sun breaks free of the horizon you are not in formation, well you’ll see. Now, we’re going to do some exercises, I know some of you used to be thatchers or barkeeps and so many other professions. Soldiering is physical, you will carry things, heavy things, you will march long distances, you will need to be able to fight laden down with armor because I have no doubt you all want to live. Well, if you want to live so much then you had better be prepared to be in the best shape of your life all the time. You’re body is your instrument, your tool, your building, it is everything to you now. So, I know many of you are not in the best shape of your lives, and some of you think you are but I assure you, you are not. When I am done with you, though, you will most certainly be in better condition than you thought was possible.”

“So, lets start with something easy: jumping jacks. Keep doing them until I tell you to stop. And begin!”

As the men started to do the exercise Kovar began to pace through the formation, examining the form of each man and making corrections where necessary. What he didn’t do was tell them to stop. He watched how quickly they got winded, but the point of this exercise beyond merely physical conditioning was to find out exactly how far they could go. They might not enjoy it, but when he was done they would be amazed by how much longer they could hold out.

When the last of them finally gave out, he walked leisurely back up to the front. “Good, now you know exactly how far you can go. I’m here to tell you that it’s not nearly far enough, but trust me when we’re done you’ll be able to do something like this without the slightest bit of effort. Now you’ve got 15 minutes to rest, and then we start again.”

He was as good as his word, and for the next week that’s what they did. He was serious when he said he’d work them into the finest shape of their lives, and from sunup to sundown they exercised. First it was easier stuff, but then he worked on not just building stamina but building muscle. Soon they’d done every sort of exercise imaginable, and once they’d plateaued they came the next morning to find bags of stones laid out for them, then each day the weight increased. The first few days there were those who were not in formation on time, or who would talk back to the general, but those people quickly found out that being forced to do extra exercise while the others rested was not pleasant. A few left in a rage, but as they saw the progress of their friends, they would find their way back, suddenly volunteering to exercise on their breaks in order to catch up to their peers.

What they didn’t realize was that within this intense exercise regime Kovar was seamlessly weaving in many other aspects of soldiering, fitting them in so naturally that the townsfolk never even realized they were there. They learned to march while they ran, they learned formations from some of the odder seeming exercises, they learned to charge from sprints, to carry the weight of their kit from the rocks. Most importantly though, with each and every action Kovar taught them discipline. The Mirnian had always been a believer in a disciplined army, he’d seen too many units of nobles allowed to do as they please ruin perfectly good strategies and get themselves killed in the process, and in victory they were worse than in death. At least when they were dead they didn’t have the temerity to try and rape and steal from the peasantry. No, Kovar had always been a strict disciplinarian. This army was going to be something new, something special, but mainly his army from the ground up, so he burned discipline into the brains, into their souls, into everything they did. When he was finished this was going to be the best disciplined army on the planet, and that was going to be the key to their success and survival.

Eventually, once he thought they were ready, he started to hand out wooden weapons, mainly in the shape of axes, a favor from Adam. They would not look real, but the weight in their hands, the air resistance, they would feel real in every way. It was then he began to teach them to fight. They might not have realized it at first, but each and every day they were being tested, and Kovar saw who the best among them were, the ones who rose to the top. As he taught them to fight, he also began to organize them. Those from among them that had caught his eye quickly found themselves being put in charge of groups of others, and slowly a chain of command began to coalesce. Units started to eat together, train together, they were encouraged to spend their free time together. At dinner each night, those that had done well, those Kovar eyed for command were invited to dine with him. At these meals he lectured and talked with them, he taught them to be leaders, he taught them how to keep their men alive, and he taught them to know when men had to die for the sake of the rest. To be invited to these meals was an honor, and eventually a regular cadre formed. From that cadre came the sargents, the deputies, the lieutenants for this nascent army.

Once the units were formed, the leaders selected he began to stage mock battles to give them a taste of the chaos of combat, and to unite all of their skills. He would set one-side up with an objective and another to prevent that. Occasionally he would command one side personally, using his power to show exactly what a difference having a good general made. The other side would grumble about unfairness, but they knew that eventually the tables would turn and Kovar would be leading them. What was important to Kovar, was that both sides quickly saw that he wasn’t just talk. They might have learned that sometimes there were battles you couldn’t win, but what he gained was their respect and slowly their admiration. He was careful to continuously change the makeup of each side, the last thing he’d want was two have two mutually opposing sub-armies instead of one united one, and it helped the units learned the strengths and weakness of their comrades in arms.

Naturally, there were some who simply couldn’t fight, but Kovar was well aware that an army was more than just front-line soldiers. He quickly identified those who would never be up to the stress of combat, and he kept them through the exercise and some of the weapons training. Even though they were never going to fight on the front-line Kovar was a firm believer that every person in an army have a grounding in the basics, when they knew how to march and how to handle themselves with a weapon they would be all the better at managing the aspects that kept the men supplied. More, the training built confidence in them and comradie with the troops. Kovar wanted an army, he wanted each and every soldier to feel like they were part of the same thing, even those who managed supplies. However, once things escalated to mock battles he pulled them aside and began to teach them the arts of the quartermaster, the rear-guard, and the many other essential functions needed to keep an army functioning.

Somehow, while doing this he managed to set aside time to help get newcomers up to speed. He’d never expected the entire town would join up on the first day, but he planned that everyone would be in by the end. That meant that people would be joining throughout the process. He expected most of the growth would happen in the second or third weeks and people started to see the signs of improvements, but he had plans to ensure that even holdouts would be able to catch-up to their peers.

So it was that Kovar attempted to forge the townsfolk of Sellos into an army. He’d lost track of the days, but soon enough the day came to hand his troops their real weapons and armor, naturally of dwarven manufacture. He stood before them looking over what the townsfolk had become.

Training the Sellosians to be excellent soldiers and forming them into an army.

Divine Strategist[+2] - Designing a training program from scratch to deal with varying levels of physical fitness, varying backgrounds, changing class sizes, and with the intent of producing a large number of well trained troops is something no mortal mind could accomplish.

Experienced General[+4] - Kovar’s trained troops before, many many many times. He knows what works and why.

EXCEED CHARGE
Kovar - Over-Sellos

It was a start, it would take time but he felt confident he could whip the Sellosians into above average soldiers, and with him leading and using his gift as a whole they would be an exceptional unit. However, he knew that, merely exceptional would not be enough for what lay ahead, not if he wanted to keep his promise to Adam. No, what he needed was not great soldiers, not exceptional soldiers, but the best soldiers that had ever walked the face of the world, and he had an inkling about how he might get them. He’d seen what happened to Sellos, the miners transformed into dwarves as they came to respect and even idolize Adam. He’d also come to the conclusion that he, Adam, and Thanadrion were of the same make, whatever that might be. It was the combination of these two facts that started his mind working, could this change that came from following , a whatever he and Adam were, be harnessed and directed. In his training as a weaponsmaster he had learned to harness his mind, the same techniques he was teaching to Adam would allow him a modicum of control over his own mind. If he focused himself, truly and deeply, into visualizing the change, might he be able to control it? If he could the army that he desired, that he, in truth, required would be at his fingertips. He would be able to keep his promises and make the Sellosians into the best fighting force in the world.

However, this power was strange and unknown, simply trying it out of the blue could spell disaster. No what he needed was to test his hypothesis, and as he thought about it the perfect subject came to mind, Burd. He had been a latecomer, and he’d never quite clicked with the training regimen and was already starting to fall noticeably behind. However, it was clear that what he lacked was not determination, Kovar noticed that Burd always arrived early, and was clearly putting everything he had into trying to keep up. With this in mind, Kovar approached him one evening after the end of training. Seeing the general approach, Burd seems to deflate, he knows he’s not doing as well as he should. Before Kovar can even speak, the smaller man pipes up, “Just give me another chance, sir. I promise I’ll do better, I’ll come in early and stay late for extra training.”

“Well, I might have a way to help you improve yourself.”

“I’d do anything, sir.”

“Good, because this method might be odd,and it might also be dangerous, but if it works I can guarantee you’ll never have to worry about falling behind again. Are you interested?”

“Yes sir!” Burd seems over the moon at the prospect, he had been expecting to be dismissed from the training, but instead he’s going to receive personal training from the general.

“Good, then I’ll expect to see you bright and early on the next rest-day.” He described a place up the mountain a bit where they might have a bit of privacy.

“I’ll be there sir.”

When the next rest-day rolled around, Burd was as good as his word, and he arrived at the training ground at the crack of dawn ready to give it his all. He found Kovar already there. “Alright, Burd, now we’re going to run through some exercises. For this to have a chance of working you’re going to have to trust me completely, can you do that?”

“I’ll do the whatever it takes to catch up, sir.”

“Good. Now let’s begin.” Kovar begins to walk the smaller man through some exercises. This training regime was designed with multiple objectives like the others. Along with the fitness aspect, this particular set of exercises was designed to help Burd trust in Kovar. Kovar lead him through the first steps just like normal, but as Burd began to get into it. Kovar closed his eyes, and gained control of his breathing. In his mind he began to use the same technique he had used with Adam. In... 2... 3..., Out... 2... 3..., soon he had returned to the relaxed state of his weaponsmaster training, and using the techniques he focused his entire mind and soul on visualizing Burd changing while at the same time trying to tap into that place where his own power lay. In his mind’s eye he could see as clearly if not even more so than if it was actually happening. As Burd went through the exercises, he would begin to transform. As if by magic, his muscles would grow, his skin would toughen, even his posture changed. He became a soldier before Kovar’s mind’s eye. It wasn’t just physical either, though his body was stronger and better than any man’s Kovar had ever seen before. Kovar could see it in his features, the way he held himself, the way he moved, Burd had hardened taking on the mentality and attitude one can only gain through actual combat. Just as importantly, Kovar could tell he was disciplined to the core, it seemed to radiate off of him. He knew, simply, knew that this new Burd was a soldier who would carry out his orders to the letter and never fall prey to panic. He was the ideal soldier.

The image was so real, and so vivid he almost forgot he had closed his eyes. It was only with some effort that he managed to open his eyes to see if his hypothesis was correct.

Trying to use Kovar’s divine power to forge Burd who had a lot of dedication but absolutely no talent into a super-soldier. Stronger, faster, hardier, and with the mental advantages that come from having faced the crucible of battle and survived time and again.

Divine Strategist[+2] - Kovar draws this idea for this plan from his power, and it is his power though the untapped form of divinity that Kovar attempt to work this miracle.

Weaponsmaster[+2] - It is the techniques of directed visualization of focusing his senses completely that he learned when his teacher taught him the arts of the weaponmaster that allow Kovar to try this experiment.

Kovar - Outside Over-Sellos

Kovar was stunned by his change and the revelation that the changd and empowerment were a two way street in equal parts. Then he was elated, his experiment had succeded. Burd was now the ultimate soldier, and he himself had been empowered at the same time. Once he had mulled over these facts for a time, he looks over at Burd. Walking over to the once tiny but now giant man, Kovar claps him firmly on the shoulder and says, "Well, at the very least I doubt you'll ever be at the bottom of the class again."

"No, sir. I'm certain that won't be a problem ever again."

"Good. Now we should probably be getting back to town. I'm certain there will be quite a bit of explaining to do, so you are to remain with me until I instruct otherwise."

"Sir, yes sir." Burd responds with a perfectly executed salute, touching his closed fist to his chest.

"Now, I suppose we'll have to deal with at least basic modesty." Looking over the shreds of his old clothes and quickly constructs a simple loincloth and Burd follows suit. The pair heads back towards Sellos to the uncertain reaction that awaits.

Heading back to Sellos, should be interesting to see how the people react.
Hey Ddwarf, we should chat when I get back from model NATO on Sunday.

Kovar - Over-Sellos

Kovar laughs gently, "So you need some help to keep up with her?" He ponders for a second, "Well, in terms of things that will take effect right this moment I could repeat the transformation Burd underwent. It would certainly leave you able to help Barbara spar, and do so well. There are other possibilities that are less drastic, but they'd take far longer. Also, you know I've had my eyes on you as a potential lieutenant since your encounter with Fel in the volcano. So I certainly wouldn't say no to the opportunity to help you become the best soldier you could be."

"What do you say?"

If Jussep assented, Kovar would once more attempt to repeat the feat he had with Burd, to reach into the flame within himself and share it with Jussep with the intent of using it to forge Jussep into a fitting lieutenant in this new army he was building. This meant not only sharing the flames of strength to enhance his body, but sharing some of the general's power of insight as well. He wanted Jussep to be able to assist him in commanding and teaching the men, and if it would help him teach Barbara and strengthen their bond all the better.

If Jussep agrees, Kovar will try and change him in a similar way as he did to Burd.

Strength[+2] - To change him in the ways that Burd was changed.

Divine Strategy[+2] - To share some of that divine insight with him, so he'll be better able to act as a commander and a teacher.

"If that's what you desire." Kovar could feel that it would be difficult to finish the changes that had not occurred to Jusep, at least until the current ones set in and stabilized. With that knowledge in mind he decided to transform Barbara as well. After all despite local feelings, he had grown up around woman soldiers and commanded more than a few in his day. Unlike Taelos, there was no taboo against female soldiers on Mirn where the only real legally or culturally enforced distinction was between commoners and nobles.

"I will make you his equal so that you may better reach your maximum potential." So, he reached within himself and attempted to fan the flame that lay within Barbara. Just as Burd, he would make her into the best soldier he could, and if it helped the traits breed true should she and Jusep decide to settle down, well all the better.

Trying to do to Barbara what Kovar managed to do to Burd, transform her into super-soldier, aiming to get her to a similar height to Jusep to make things easier for them.

Strength[+2] - To help her grow and become stronger/more hardy.

Divine Strategy[+2] - To help give her a soldier's instincts and the discipline to survive in battle.

Kovar and Adam - Under-Sellos

quote:

Adam: It was only after he was done, and had stepped back to admire his work, that Adam realised that he had been holding his breath near the end. His eyes came back into focused, and he inhaled greatly, clutching his heart, his chest heaving. He stared at his creation, and shuddered. "Alright... that definitely felt different. Wh... w..by the core of the world, this is impressive."

Kovar: "It was indeed impressive. I'm glad the techniques I've taught you proved so useful."

Adam: "I'm glad I didn't open my eyes to see that all I had done was play hopscotch with myself. My... darn... This.. this will take forever to build."

Kovar: "Indeed, and when finished it will be glorious."

Adam: "But..." he said, spinning around. "It won't matter, if I don't have the people to build it with. Looks like I'm going to have to try recruiting crafts men after all."

Kovar: "Indeed. Perhaps we can combine our two endeavors. Once I visit the other towns and attempt to recruit them you can send searchers for craftsmen in my wake."

Adam: "Aye... and I can train crafters as the like... but it's their choice. And they must know what they'll become if they do. I say the plan to have us make more items and sell them is a good one eh?"

Kovar: "Speaking of items, I think I might benefit from your services."

Adam: "Oh... tell me more..."

Kovar: "Well, if I am to visit these towns, convince them that I can keep them safe in the time of coming uncertainty, I will have a greater impact if I am wearing something a bit more impressive than two undersized blacksmith's aprons."

Adam: "Hm... you'll need some drat fine armour then..."

Adam: "I haven't made one in a while... but it would be good practice with my hands. Give me a while, " he says, stretching his arms. "I should be able to make something strong enough to keep your new body in check."

Kovar: "It need not merely be strong but impressive as well, awe-inspiring if possible."

Adam: "Awe inspirng. Well I did just build a city from my heart, so I think I should be a ble to manage a bit of Armour Kovar..."

Kovar: "I was wondering if I would be able to assist you at all. After-all, I've spent quite a bit of time with your forge, and it would seem an appropriate continuation of my teaching helping you if your teaching could help me."

Adam: "Hmm... well, actually, you would. It needs to fit you aye? Well, armour is a funny thing. I ken tell ye tha' Only you and you yerself can make it the perfect fit. It would be a bloody good idea ta get ye opinion on me work too. So Aye. Stay.. We can build it together."

***Kovar gives a broad smile. "I wonder what will happen if I attempt to mix my power with the metal as we work it?"

Adam: He paused, his eyes narrowing. "What... like... combining? Would that... would that work?"

Kovar: "Well I was able to change Burd and the others from a distance by focusing my power on them. Might it be possible to do the same to the armor? I've yet to test its effects on inanimate objects."

Adam: "Aye... Well.. either that, or ye'd make the metal impossible to meld as it would be too strong..."

Kovar: "True, but I suppose we'll find out."

Adam: "Alright then lad. Let's get to work. Forge was warm anyway."

Kovar: "Excellent. This is your area of expertise so I will let you take the lead. Let me know how I can assist."

EXCEED CHARGE
Kovar - Under-Sellos

As he followed Adam's instructions Kovar turned towards the power in himself. A flame, a light, a wave, it could be all those things or none of them, but whatever it was he focused it on the armor before him. Before he realized it he had once again slipped into a trance, and the armor continued to be completed before his eyes, but as it went he focused on changing it, improving it. With his ability to see connections and strategies ten thousand different designs, each with their own benefits and disadvantages appeared in his mind, but there was one path out of those multitudes with he was drawn to more than any other. He focused on it, attempting to influence the armor's appearance, aiming to strike just the right note between beautiful and intimidating to hearten those who were with him, frighten those who were against him, and make those who stood in-between wish to join him.

As he did this, he reached into the depths of his other power and focused it on the armor. His previous uses had not just make people physically stronger but had made them more, and so now as he channeled that power into the armor taking shape before him, he attempt to make it more as well. He was not certain how this would play out, but he had faith in his own power, and faith in Adam's mastery of his craft.

Assisting Adam, trying to make the armor awe-inspiring.

Divine Ranks:
Divine Strategy[+2] - To intuit the design which would balance the qualities of heartening allies, intimidating enemies, and convincing the neutrals.

Strength[+2] - Kovar has seen this power make people not merely physically stronger but just generally more than they were(men becoming more masculine, woman more feminine, and everyone better soldiers), so he's trying to focus his power in on the armor to make it not only stronger, but more.

EXCEED CHARGE
Adam and Kovar - Northwestern Taeless

The first several days were uneventful, Kovar took some pleasure in once more being on the road, and from seeing Adam’s reactions to the land that had for so long been so near, but that might as well have been on the other side of the world for the dwarf. The general also took the chance to spend some of the time training the soldiers on scouting and other small-unit tactics and necessities. He also made sure to keep up with Adam’s training, he was hoping that by the time they reached the first town Adam might have grasped how to wield his oversized ax.

It was near dusk on the sixth day that trouble found the group. As they walked through a ravine that forced them to move no more than two-wide at a time the soldier on point held a hand to signal a stop. Quietly making his way back to the rest he reported. It appeared that there were several men at the end of the ravine where it once more let out onto the mountain’s less harsh slopes. He had not been able to determine much about them, but he was fairly certain he had been hidden by the long shadows of dusk that doused the ravine.

Adam, halfway through humming a quiet drinking song, moved up to his travel companion Kovar, whispering to him under his breath. “Hey, men waiting at the end of a ravine... doesn’t that sound like an ambush to you?”

The general looks pensive for a moment, “It most certainly does. I think we should approach this carefully.” Turning to address the scout, Kovar asks, “Did you get a good feeling for their numbers?”

“I saw two in ravine, but if Adam’s theory is correct they are likely just the bait and there are more hidden in wait.”

“Well..” the dwarf piped in, “that might be true, but they might also just want to have a sing song and share our wine and whatever the blazes it is that people do when they aren’t trying to rob you blind. I say we send someone down to go talk to him, see what they want. And if they seem to want a bit of action, we tell them that we’re heavily armed with axes and beer and nothing is going to stand in our way... or something like that.”

“A counter-ambush...” Kovar responds. “It might work, though we’d need to be careful. The ravine puts us at a disadvantage. Whom would you suggest be the bait.” Kovar seemed interested in testing out the dwarf’s strategic sense.

“Aye.. about that...” Adam pointed up to a side of the ravine. “See.. up there? that rock face? That’s primed to fall. Like someone set it up to block the path if they wanted. Maybe it’s already like that, or maybe that’s how the land is. So if we don’t talk them down, they might drop it, and I have no idea how long it will take us to get around the blasted thing. So whoever goes to talk to them, better be one hell of a charming bastard..”

He then looks up at Kovar with a wide grin. “Oh thank the ore you’re around eh?” he adds, with a playful punch to his thigh.

“Well in a pinch, Burd and I might be able to move the boulder if it falls. Also, if I go they might just drop the boulder immediately. Recall how you reacted when I first walked in, and then I wasn’t wearing this armor or carrying a blade.” Even in the shadows of the ravine, Adam can make out the glow of Kovar and Burd’s eyes.

“And you think that a half-pint of a human is going to give them less of a shock impression? Seriously? They’d bloody quash me if they thought the rest of ya were the same!”

“It is good then that you, I, and Burd are not the only ones here. I’m loath to send one of my trainees into such a situation, but I see little choice in the matter, and they will have to face the crucible of crisis at one time or another anyways.”

Adam frowned, then shook his head. “Nay. You’re right. They may look like capable soldiers, but these are my people too. If you can keep an eye on the boulder... I could...” he took a breath. “I could try talking them down using the voice... but lesser. Just keep an eye out. If they’re planning to block the path, that might mean they have a few of them behind us.”

“Perhaps, but if the boulder is meant as a means of escape then any trapped on the side with us would be doomed. These are bandits, not regular troops I doubt any would volunteer for such an assignment.” Kovar takes a deep breath and lets out a small sigh, “As to your suggestion, if you are willing I won’t bar you from going, but since this situation allows for no second chances I must be honest. I worry you might not be able to withstand the pressure of such a situation. However, if you are determined then you should go, and I will do my utmost to ensure that you come out of this unharmed.”

“Ey... look,” the dwarf replied, eyes downcast. “I already said I wish I was chest deep in a pint ‘ah ale back at Sellos, but like ye said before. If I want to start a city, I need ta learn how ta talk to people. They’re strangers, true, and they might want ta rob us blind, true, but if anything, if we can talk them down, then no one will be hurt.

“Take a look on the bright side Kovar, we get through this without me fainting like a wee baby, and you can take all the credit for turning me from a shut-in with an anvil into a pint sized leader of men!”

He straightened himself, picked up his axe - because he was scared, not stupid - and straightened his shoulders. “Just give me a while with them. It will be fiiiiiiiiiiine.”

Kovar just nods, and signals to his men. Adam might be going up alone, but the rest of them would get as close as they were able and stand ready. “We’ll wait for you signal. If you want us to strike, put your left hand behind your head. If you want us to reveal ourselves without attacking then simply call out for us.”

“Call out to you? Like in ‘Help help, they’re trying to skewer me’ call out to you? Well way to put me mind at ease brother.”

“More along the lines of having us show ourselves to raise the stakes, but the important thing is that you remember to put your left hand behind your head if you want us to launch a surprise attack.”

Adam rolled his eyes, shaking his head as he started to walk towards them, grumbling to himself. It was, of course, naturally a coping reaction - Adam was terrified. True, he had a giant axe twice his own size resting amicably on his shoulders, but that didn’t stop him from worrying that the bandits would put three arrows in his eyes before he had a chance to defend himself with it. Then all his plans, ideas, and hopes would be gone, along with any chance of creating that secret ale he was thinking off.

Thinking that way was not going to help any matters, he thought to himself, taking time to breathe deeply, reaching an almost unworldly level of calm as he approached the core group of men, taking a quick glance to his left at the loosened shade of rock as he passed it. He couldn’t spot the men hiding behind it, ready to seal the forward path, but he could sense them, their touch on the stone. The scruffles of their feet on mud. Their breath braced against the rock itself. He bit his lip, hoping Kovar knew what he was doing, as he walked on.

The two men at the end of the ravine certainly had the characteristics one might assume in a bandit. Their clothes were scraggly and dirty, and if one looked too close they might notice that some of that dirt was in fact dried blood. They weren’t big, at least not in the way Kovar and his men were or indeed as Adam was in his own way, rather they had a sort of wiry strength. The bigger of the two who seemed to be in charge had a threatening demeanor, and his right hand perpetually rested on the pommel of a rather large looking scimitar that was strapped to his leg.

As Adam approached, the bigger one called out to him, “You there, pint-sized. You gonna pay the toll nice and quiet-like or is this gonna get a bit bloody?”

The pint-sized man paused in his step, before continuing towards the men. “That depends lads. Firstly. what’s the toll? Me and my mates here are just making our way through the valley. And we don’t want no trouble.”

The smaller one laughs and the bigger one replies, “The toll’s everything you got, and because I’m feeling generous I’ll let you keep your skin.”

“Ah... I was afraid of that.” the dwarf said, his shoulders sagging. He looked up with a soft smile, trying to put on the best smile he had. “And if we don’t? I mean, If you want to share food, that’s fine lads. But I’m very tempermental to my tools and stuff. How about we just have a nice little dinner by a bonfire and sing songs till the sun rise... eh?”

“A joker eh. Maybe I wasn’t clear.” The bandit draws his blade and points it threateningly at Adam, “You have only two choices, your money or your life.”

Adam sighed, muttering. “I was really hoping you wouldn’t say that”. He slowly lifted up the axe from his shoulder with one hand, and with a grunt, leaned the sharp end onto the ground. It hit hard, cracking the stone underneath it with a bang, and he flexed his arm, his muscles bulging.

He looked up at the two of the men, and spoke

“Alrecht lads. 'en mebbe Ah shoods explain th' situation tae ye.

I am no brave soul. Nor am I a bandit killer. Hell, I am just a simple smith. See this Axe? Made from the strongest oak in Sellos. top quality. Broke three saws trying to cut into it.

The Steel? Sellos Steel. New type. Came up with it the other day. capable of cleaving a man in two with a single swing if you keep it good and sharp.

Why is it so heavy, I see you asking. Well. I'm a bit short, so my leverage isn't very good for hitting bigger things. Way I see it, increase the weight of the weapon to them manageable levels, and I won't ever have to aim when I swing. It will hurt even if I just lightly tap you on the side of your wee leg.

Noo, as Ah said afair, aam jist a black smith. back thaur? there's a real life general wi' whit he considers an elite army. his best ay th' best. an' he has huir uv a much wanted tae test them in battle.

So. This is how it is going to be. Me, I don't like violence. And I don't like hurting people. But I can do it without so much as a blink if someone dares to threaten me and my men. You'll stand aside, you'll let us walk through, and if you even think of signalling the men of yours hiding behind the rocks to the left of me, if I catch a single clue that the men you have hiding in the brushes to the right of you, if I so much as think that you may be about to swing that scimitar and do anything contrary to what I just suggested...

I’ll lop yer bludy balls aff.”

“Ya, well you may be strong, but I only see one of you.” The smaller one chimes in, clearly trying to bluster his way out of the situation. The bigger one also seems intimidated, but there appears to be something else going on with him, something Adam can’t put his finger on.

“Still your tongue, boy,” he said, his eyes now no longer taking the happy shade they had been when he had arrived. “The grown folks are talking.”

Adam looked at the larger one, feeling the spark inside him burn. Perhaps he was trying a little too hard. Maybe it was time for the carrot. “Look. I don’t want to begin to say I know what it must be like. Having to rob people everyday just to get by and all that. But we’re good people, and we ain’t gonna do anyone harm. I want this to be as peaceful and with with less bloodshed from either side. Well, yours more than mine, but we’ll work that at the time.”

He looked the bandit straight in the eye. “So like I said... what way can we resolve this without either of us losing face?”

The bigger bandit seems intrigued and sheathed his weapon, but the smaller one gives a signal and a third appears, he’s not so big as the first but Adam can feel the violence radiating from him, the way the other two react he’s clearly their superior, he’s got a bow, an arrow already knocked and aimed straight at Adam.. “What are you two waiting for, we need to speed this along so we can meet up with the chief. You too know what he does to those that don’t pay on time.”

The larger one interjects, “But he seems strong, we may not need to fight him, he’s gonna offer...”

The leader lashes out with one of his legs tripping the larger bandit, “Shut up, you gone all yellow, and we ain’t got no use for cowards.” He turns back to Adam, “Now no more talking, throw down your weapons and any valuables you got, or you’ll find out what it feels like to be shot by an arrow right quick.”

The whole time, the spark inside Adam was flaring. Right there, was a show of leadership that was new to him, but he was beginning to understand. A leader ruled in their own way. For Adam, it was through companionship, showing his brothers that he was just like them, and that they were working together. For Kovar, it was through his own strength. His words and demeanor were sometimes terrifying, but people found him fascinating. Hell, he thought, he wouldn’t mind backing the general up in a fight.

This man, this bandit leader. He ruled through intimidation. He showed the others he was boss by effectively beating the fact into their heads each and every day. He wasn’t charismatic, or a brother.

He was a bully.

And a very interesting jolt sparked through adam’s mind, a remnant from the fire in his soul.

“Tell me something...” he said casually to the air, raising his voice so the others hiding could hear, trying not to look at the arrow pointed at him. “I take it times have been hard for you fellas at the moment, and travellers with food and gold have been scarce lately. Maybe...” he said, casting eyes down at the man on the ground. “Maybe it’s time you had someone else take the reigns... if they wanted.”

The bandit leader screamed at him, “I SAID NO TALKING! LAST CHANCE OR I WILL KILL YOU!”

He smiled at the leader, hand still on the axe. He was terrified on the inside, but the reward was far too great not to risk. “You’re not going to get another chance like this, son.”

“I warned you...” The bandit leader looses the bow, but the bigger bandit still on the ground lashes out with his leg knocking the leader off balance, the shot zings by Adam’s head missing him by barely an inch. The leader kicks the downed bandit in the chest and he stops moving. He throws down his bow and pulls out a wicked looking mace, and he yells up, “Now anyone else want to try something, and they’re dead. If I don’t kill them, the Boss sure as hell will.”

The bandit should have been paying more attention to the dwarf he had just tried to shoot, instead of making a big show of everyone. The pint-sized bundle of muscle snarled, as be barreled straight into the man, the heft of the axe slamming into the man’s stomach, sending them both sprawling. All along the dwarf screamed at the top of his voice. “YOU BLOODY TRIED TA SHOOT ME YA BUGGER!”

As the two tumbled away, the rest of the bandits, the smaller one, and the four behind the boulder revealed themselves and started to run after them, weapons drawn, murder in their eyes. Seeing the situation deteriorate, Kovar decided that now was the time to strike, and he and his men barreled out of the shadows, much to the surprise of the bandits.

A small scale battle had broken out.

Fifteen minutes later it was all over. The bandit’s had been slaughtered, their fear of their shadowy “Boss” greater than their fear of the force attacking them. On the Sellosian side, Kovar and Burd had made it through uninjured, and the others had only incurred minor injuries, though one of them would have quite the scar to show for the fight. Kovar was kneeling over the bigger bandit, he quickly looked him over the determined he was not seriously injured, when the man started to come to.

“WHAT IN BLAZES!” he shouts staring up into the glowing pools of light that formed the eyes of the huge man standing over him.

Adam emerged from a pile of bushes, covered in bruises, and dragging over the body of a rather large and very unconscious man. His eyes still blazed as he emerged. “I can’t believe the devil tried to shoot me! With a BOW! WITH ARROWS! I COULD HAVE DIED!”

He threw the body of the man in front of Kovar, only then showing that he was shivering, a cold sweat breaking across his forehead. “I could.. I could have died.”

“Something we all face, the fact that you pushed through it, or at least managed to restrain it till it was safe is why you’re still here.” The general’s voice was calm, as though this was something he’d wrestled with himself from time to time.

Adam shook his head, biting his lip. “I’ll.. I’l... Let’s.. let’s just go alright. Did anyone survive? Is anyone hurt?”

“Our side suffered only minor injuries, the bandits weren’t so lucky. Though it appears the one who saved you just regained consciousness.”

The dwarf frowned, biting his lip, before strolling past Kovar, to stand by the bandit’s side. He knelt down offering a hand. “Come on lad. I owe you my life. True, if you’d acted just a little sooner, I might not have been shot at, but credit where it’s due.” He did not smile, but his shaking had stopped. “Rise.”

The bandit took the outstretched hand, “Yes... sir.” He seemed unsure how to address Adam, but clearly respected him. Getting to his feet, he looks down at the dwarf, “It seems like you weren’t kidding, sir. What are you going to do with me?”

He shrugged. “Well.. I ain’t gonna kill ye.” he looked around, face contorted. “Don’t really have the stomach for it. And way I see it, I owe ye my life. So, one time offer. Ye can disappear, head back to whatever camp ye have, and hope none of your mates survived... or ya can come with me. Help me carry my tools. And I’ll find a way to pay you back for a life owed. Up ta you really.”

“I’d say we’re even on that front, sir.” He looked around at his former allies, “At least since I’m still breathing.” He faces Adam again, “I’d be glad to accompany you, sir. I can’t rightly ask for you to share your supplies with me for nothing, so I’d be more than willing to work for you to pay my way. If you’ll have me, sir.”

“Aye..” the dwarf says, rubbing his eyes in an effort to calm himself down. “Don’t worry yourself too much about that eh. Name’s Adam. You can tell me yours after you help me bury the dead.”

“Mine’s Raeth, sir.” The ex-bandit adds, moving to help Adam.
---

Once the party arrived, the people of the town were quick to gather, gawking at Kovar and Burd as well as Adam in equal measure.

Kovar looks over the gathered townspeople, they were impressed by his appearance and armor at least. So, without letting any further time pass or silence gather the general launches right into his pitch. “Times are changing. You have already begun to see it, strange lights at night, the shaking of the earth, and now the appearance of men like myself. Long have the old kingdom’s stood, however they are creations of an era that is ending, and they will not long survive in this wondrous and terrible new age that has begun to dawn.”

“Already Taeless has been a neglectful lord, the city states are more content to fight among one another in ritual combat than to properly protect their lands. Already, bandits and brigands have begun to proliferate through the mountain roads, my group encountered several on the way to this town from Sellos. They fell to our blades, but I doubt each and every one of you will be as well prepared for combat as we. Do the lords and rich merchants of Taelos or Koltik’a do anything to resolve this problem? No, they are content to horde their wealth, for even the people within their own cities die to plague by the hundreds, and if they cannot be bothered to solve such a crisis on their own doorstep why would you expect them to lift a finger on your behalf.”

“The old kingdoms are doomed, doomed by the dawning of this new age and by their own corrupt natures. So to you who suffer their neglect I offer another path. My companion and I intend to build a new kingdom, one not weighted down by the poison legacies of the old age. That is why I have braved the bandit-ridden mountain paths to come before you, to offer you a place in that kingdom to be. In exchange for your fealty, I will offer you protection. Not only will you be able to benefit from those who I have already trained, but those you send to Sellos to join my army will soon become some of the greatest soldiers in the world, more than able to root out the bandit menace and to protect you from whatever new threats take the stage.”

“Worse than all I have said before, there is a threat far to the west, a threat unlike any the world has seen before. My companion and I both felt it, the world itself cry out in pain as something awful and alien came into the world. I tell you, regardless of whether you care for bandits, this is something you must prepare for, and the old kingdoms will not prepare you.”

“Talk of doom and gloom and how to guard yourselves from it may be necessary, but such things are not all this new kingdom would offer its subjects. What I offer, what I truly wish to provide is a better tomorrow. Taelos for all its wealth is still for most a land of plague and poverty. I wish to offer for you and eventually the rest of the land a better life, a safer life, a more prosperous life for all.”

“Now, if you wish proof of my claims beyond the appearance of myself and my companion, I offer this. If you accept my offer, and one of you wishes to volunteer I will change them as I changed Burd here. They would gain great strength and discipline, and I would leave them here to coordinate integration on my behalf. I would also encourage you to speak to my companion, he and his people have much to offer, and their mastery of stone and metal would be offered to those who would join our kingdom and wish to gain it.”

TL;DR: Kovar and Adam chat for a bit about the armor and their plans for the future. Upon hearing that Kovar is going to try and convince all the other towns around the mountain to join a new kingdom, Adam decides to go along. Kovar takes Burd and his best students, leaving Jusep and Barbara in charge of training the others. Adam takes some crafting tools.
They set out, eventually getting caught in a bandit ambush. Adam tries to talk down the bandits and partially succeeds, but their leader forces a fight trying to shoot Adam. One of the bandits sides with Adam and causes the leader to miss and gets KOed for his trouble. Afterwards, only the one bandit survives, and decides to follow Adam. The group gets to the nearest town and Kovar makes his pitch. Pointing out the neglect of the Taelossian nobles for the mountain towns, and the fact that the world is changing. If they agree to swear fealty, Kovar offers to change a volunteer like he changed Burd and leave them in charge of coordinating training and integration of the town.

KOVAR: Forming a new kingdom from the other towns around Sellos by going to each town and offering them protection and access to dwarven goods, not to mention training and the benefit of Kovar’s power:

Divine:

Strength[+2] - In order to transform 1 person per town in those that agree, and maybe more if they really need a demonstration that Kovar is legitimately capable of making super-soldiers.

Mortal:

Powerful Charisma[+4] - To convince the townspeople to swear fealty by telling them what this new kingdom will do for them and what it stands for.

ADAM: Giving him a hand with my own personal touch, speaking to the people in town when I can, being generally sociable

Divine

Leader [+2] Adam is getting really, really, really good at seeing how people work. That fire inside that comes when he speaks guides his actions.

Mortal

Cool and composed [+2] Plus, give him a bit of time (like a month) to get used to you, and he’ll come off as one of the calmest people you’ve ever met.

Don’t want no Trouble [-2] Of course, BEFORE that time, he will be panicking like a maniac. NEW TOWNS, PEOPLE, BANDITS, WHY IS THIS SO SCARY!

The second town was much like the first, a speech, some helpful convincing by Raeth, and the transformation of a volunteer. This time, things went more according to plan and the man’s transformation was more like Burd’s than Cathos’s, much to Kovar’s relief. That incident had awakened him to the dangerous game he had been playing. He still knew little about his power, and had yet been able to afford the process with even a modicum of reliability.

All in all, he realized, he needed to practice. He needed to work out how this process worked, and find a way to achieve much greater control over the result. The only way to do that, the way he had always expanded his capabilities was practice. However, to practice on humans was far too dangerous, a last resort if there was no other option. No, it would be better if he could practice on plants or small animals.

So, having gathered the recruits from the two towns who had decided to come right away, Kovar intended to head back to Sellos. While he was waiting for Adam to finish up his talks and then on the return trip, he would check out whether the small embers he had seen inside Burd were inside things other than humans, and if possible attempt to practice employing and controlling this power he had gained. For only once he had mastered it could he truly be able to include it in his planning, because an unreliable weapon can be worse than no weapon at all.

Seeing if the power to transform things(like how Burd was changed rather than Cathos) works on things other than humans, and if it does practicing transforming things.

Strength[+2] - To pour the power into whatever Kovar can use to practice with it in order to attempt to learn to better control it.

Experienced General[+4] - Kovar made his rank through natural talent, but only because that talent was tempered and mastered with hard work and practice. By applying the same principles and resolve that made Kovar one of the most effective generals on Mirn, he hopes to master this aspect of his new power.

EDIT: Kovar would be starting with smaller stuff preferably plants but birds or small mammals if necessary and work his way up to bigger stuff as he gains greater control of his power.

The results of his experiments were truly interesting to the general. The changes to the goats were one thing, but the new berries were a potential goldmine of applications. If the berry could be shot from a sling then they might function like a fire-bomb, and since until the skin was breached they were cool to the touch they were could act as stored up fire. The aggressiveness of the plants themselves were unwelcome though, so once he tore off a smaller piece he could replant at some later time, he killed the plant. The goats he was content to leave in peace, after-all they had no means to reproduce, and so were less a threat than a curiosity.

With the situation in hand, Kovar realized he had a bit of time before he was expected to be back in Sellos, time he intended to put to good use. His powers had worked to make superior soldiers, always calm and ready to obey orders, but would it work on a natural predator. Adam had told him that mountain lions stalked some of the passes, and so now Kovar set out to find one of them. If he could make a perfect soldier, could he also harness such a predator as a perfect companion?

Searching for a mountain lion to try Kovar's powers on, in hopes of taming it and keeping it on in a similar role to a war hound.

Divine Strategy[+2] - Based on his knowledge of the beasts from Adam, Kovar uses his divine sense to locate the areas he is most likely to encounter one of them.

Experienced General[+4] - Tracking a wild beast relied on the same principle as tracking enemy troops, and Kovar has set up more than a few ambushes in his time.

Kovar leaps, grabbing the cat in his large arms. His size might be an impediment when trying to nimbly move through the mountain passes, but when it came to getting the upper hand wrestling a big cat into submission it was a major asset. Once he finally had the cat properly grasped and restrained, he turns his focus inward, tuning out the lion's snarls. There is no fire, no trite metaphor this time. He has come to a deeper understanding of his power, and so having centered himself he simply wills the lion to change. As he did with Burd, he seeks to grant it power, he wills it to be strong, fast, and tough, more; and as with Burd he seeks not simply to make it powerful, but to make it a soldier. He pours in discipline and soldierly traits such as respect for superiors in from the inexhaustible well within him. The same well that has given him the understanding of war and conflict necessary to read the complex tides of battle like one might read a book.

So it is that the general tries to tame this beast, and make it into his soldier and companion, just as he has tried to tame Sellos and make into the cornerstone of a new and better world. He did not need to hunt down the best mountain lion, just as he did not need seek out the strongest town, because he knew down to the very core of his being that he would make them the best, the strongest. He would make his new, better world or he would die trying. He knew he was not alone in his goal, Adam strove with him in the dwarf's own way. In these hills however, all that existed was he and the beast below him, so he turned all his will and all his power to complete his task, his entire cause in miniature.

Trying to super-soldierize the mountain lion, much like Burd.

Strength[+2] - To grant the cat power, stamina, agility, to make it more than it is.

Divine Strategy[+2] - To tame the cat/make it a soldier, to share that ineffable spark just as he did with Burd before.

Kovar - Sellos

quote:

***Kovar has returned to Sellos after over a month of traveling around mount Wurde. He returns, his new lion companion in tow, seeking out Algard. It has been a while since they last spoke, and Kovar has a gift for the ex-guard.

Algard: "That's quite the monster you have with you boss." Algard says very, very warily eyeing your lion.

Algard: For his part Algard is actually a bit leaner than when you first met him, it seems that he has been making a genuine effort with the training regime.

Kovar: "He is indeed." Kovar sees a nice sunny rock and directs the enhanced lion to rest itself upon it. The cat leaps up and proceeds to sun itself. "You're looking pretty good. How have you been doing?"

Algard: "I have been trying not to die under Barbara's orders. I don't get to eat enough, there's less ale and I have to get up before the sun rises. It's not right I tell you." He says, although his complaints are somewhat in jest.

Kovar: "The price you pay for such a trim figure." Kovar returns the jest. "Anyhow, I'm glad to see you adjusting so well, especially with all the strange happenings." Kovar does not need to provide a list, because his current form, not to mention the huge lion sunning itself a few meters away are the most definite examples.

Algard: "Things seem to becoming larger than life when you are around." He admits.

Kovar: "All too true, though perhaps with the goal I'm seeking it's for the best."

Algard: "Maybe. But Jusep and Barbara do eat more food than they did before. How are you going to feed everyone if you make more people like them?"

Kovar: "That is an excellent question. I've been experimenting with using my power on crops. If I can make giant men and lions, I should be able to make giant vegetables and livestock as well."

Algard: "Oh, how did that work out?" Algard asks with the curiosity of a man who loves his food.

Kovar: Kovar pulls the small piece of the fireberry plant from his pocket. "Results were mixed, apparently I've also gained power over fire, and at the time I didn't have the best control of it. So I made one hell of a plant, but the fruit contained liquid fire, which is... less than edible."

Algard: "Um. Maybe it will make good ale?" Algard offers helpfully.

Kovar: "Well if I can make it work it'll make a hell of a weapon. Imagine being able to sling fire across a battlefield, or simply leave the berries on the ground like caltrops. Not so great for the logistics problem though."

Algard: "Using fire on people doesn't really sit well with me boss, seems kind of...wrong." Algard says with a shudder. "You stab a man fair and square, that's one thing. Setting them on fire is...it ain't right."

Kovar: "Perhaps. Either way, I'd like to keep our options open, in case there comes a day when it's not men we're fighting."

Algard: "I don't think the Dwarves would really do that sir, most of them are still pretty close to the people here."

Kovar: "I'm not talking about the dwarves. The people are Sellos are still close, and Adam and I are almost like brothers. I'm more worried that there are others like Adam and I who might be less benign. I know there are at least two others, and all it takes is for one of them to be a madman, and then who knows what we'd be facing."

Algard: "Oh. That does sound like a problem I guess. But, I'm not sure I'd be okay with using fire on them as well you know? Well, anyone following them. They just might not know better or have a choice."

Kovar: "True, but would you have a problem with using it on monsters?"

Algard: "Um...I guess not. But giant lions aside, monsters don't really exist." Algard said with a remarkable amount of conviction and practicality in the face of everything that had happened so far.

Kovar: "Well, I hope your right. Anyhow, the berries make just as good flints as ammunition, and I hope now that I've got this whole fire-thing under control I can get some real super-crops going."

Kovar: At the same moment, the giant lion decided to roll over and gives a toothy yawn.

Algard: "Did something happen with that fire thing you're mentioning? You seem kind of uneasy about it."

Kovar: "Well, you know I went out to get the towns at the base of the mountain to join to form a new kingdom right?"

Algard: "Aye, I mean yeah." He says with a grimace. "Thadroin came and talked to Jusep about it and I listened in."

Kovar: "Well, there are two. In each I tried to change one of them like I changed Burd, as proof I was truthful about my powers and to act as my surrogate after I'd left. One time it went fine, the other... not so much. Let's just say, I suddenly had power over fire, and instead of just being huge, the guy also had burning eyes and furnace where his stomach should be."

Algard: Algards eyes go very wide and he goes very pale.

Algard: "Gods above and below. Was there much of him left after he stopped burning?"

Kovar: "He didn't burn. He's still alive, the fire doesn't hurt him."

Algard: Two blinks. "That's....I think it's early in the day and I need a stout ale boss." He says with a sigh, "This is all a bit much for me.

Kovar: "I'm not really sure what to think of all this either. The whole world has changed, and Adam and I are at the center. It can be a lot to take in."

Algard: "So did you need anything else from me boss? It seems like you'd want to talk to Barbara and Jusep more than me." He says with a bit of a self-deprecating grin.

Kovar: "Well I'd been so caught up with find Jusep his partner that we haven't talked in awhile, so I wanted to see how you were faring." He seems as though he's trying to remember something for a second, "Ah right, I almost forgot." He pulls a set of armor out of his pack. He'd already managed to snag some appropriately sized cloths from a tailor in one of the towns at the base of the mountain. He hands to the magical armor to Algard.

Algard: "Who am I giving this to?" Algard says looking at the armour appraisingly. "Jusep or-" He pauses as the armour visibly shrinks and resizes in front of his eyes.

Kovar: "It's for you. You might have noticed that it's magical."

Algard: "For me? Cripes you can't just give something this good to me boss. You need to give it to someone important." He says shaking his head in surprise and a little denial.

Kovar: "I am."

Algard: "Look at it. This is armour fit for a king. I'm not even a particularly good guard." Algard says stubbornly.

Kovar: "Well, as a soon to be king, I'm giving it to you. You've been with me since the start, when for all the world I looked like just another beggar. Now put it on."

Algard: Algard looks like he is going to object and then sighs. "Whatever you say boss, I'm going to need some help putting it on though. I saw a noble come by once, these armours are a two person job."

Kovar: "Good thing I'm here then."

Algard: It takes a couple of minutes to put the armour onto Algard, who seems to be somewhat conflicted about it during the process.

Algard: While it is an amazing gift, it is fairly clear that the man does not feel comfortable taking it.

Kovar: As he finishes with the last strap, Kovar speaks to Algard once more, "I know you may not feel right about taking it, but the magic is only good for someone who hasn't been changed. Not to mention, you sure as hell are important enough to merit it. So stop being so self-conscious."

Algard: "What's this magic you're talking about?" Algard asks warily, apparently still remembering the burning man.

Kovar: "It's the same one on Jusep and Burd, only slower."

Algard: "Oh. I see. I always expected these things to be heavier you know? Or maybe I'm stronger than I thought." Algard says and looks at the helmet.

Algard: "Do I need to wear this all the time?"

Kovar: "Well the more you wear it the more the magic works. It's up to you, but I'd wear it as much as you were able at first, to give it time to set it."

Algard: "Okay. Well I guess we'll see how much I smell after a while?" Algard says with a nervous laugh.

Kovar: "Well it is magic, and I didn't notice any smell after spending weeks on the road, so maybe it takes care of that?"

Algard: "That sounds mighty handy."

Kovar: "It does indeed. Anyhow, I'm not really sure how quickly the magic will take effect."

Kovar: "Anyhow, I need to go check in with Adam. Let me know if anything changes."

Algard: "With me or around here?" Algard asks with some confusion.

Kovar: "With you. Like I said, I have no idea how long it will take for the magic in the armor to play out."

Algard: "Sure thing boss." He says awkwardly and puts the helmet on. As you walk away he raps it on the head, testing it a little.

His gift given, Kovar heads towards Under-Sellos to seek out Adam.

EXCEED CHARGE
Adam and Kovar

quote:

Adam: It took less than a moment for Adam to catch onto his breath, his grin wider than it had ever been. He had done it. He had taken Kovar's training and used it to make himself a better man! Good thing he was so good with a Spe... He paused, his eyes widening, the grin disappearing, and he dropped the spear in shock. He looked over at Kovar, surprising himself at where his eyes were going. His neck - slightly exposed to the right. Perfect lean in for a thrust. His legs, breakable with the right pressure. He could be pushed into the jutting rock on the left side of the wall - And he screamed: "Fer Stone's Sake Kovar! Somethin' bad just ruddy 'curred!"

Kovar: His breathing still heavy, and his heartbeat pounding like a drum in his ear, Kovar takes a minute to catch his breath before responding, "I had noticed."

Adam: He reached in to give Kovar a hand - hands, not straightened. Grabbed from the left side, he could put him in a hold - and gestured to one of his tabled, giving the rather large and well built man a place to sit. "Oh... I cannae think ya did Kovar. I cannae think I like it either."

Kovar: Sitting down Kovar responds, "Well, liking it is not really relevant. Whatever happened, happened, and now all there is to do is cope with it."

Adam: He leaned back, looking at his weapon rack in disdain - "I'm... I'm a bloody killer."

***Kovar looked at him with hard eyes, "So? I've killed many people, some with my own hands, and some by my order. It's the way of the world."

Adam: "No.. no no no that's not what I mean... Kovar, I'm an actual killer." He pointed to the weapon rack, eyes widened. "Ye may be efficient Kovar, but can even ye use all of those things in a fair fight? Looking now, I can see things. The spear. Balance on its tail. Swift with ye strikes, best fer larger enemies. Warhammer. Crushing. But notch on corner 'er stone makes it a wee bit wild ta swing from me left. Right swings best advantage." He turned to Kovar, looking at him dead in the eyes. "Ye right hand. On the table. A kick to it's legs will make ya drop. The drop will bring ya to me level, where I can finish ye off with the table leg from the fall. Yer shoes. Left one has a stone just above it. I stomp on that, ye pain will be enough fer me ta make a grab at yer throat. Yer breathing. Yer heartbeat. I can here it. It's like... it's calling ta me. It wants me ta crush it in the palm of my dirty, bloody hands! AND I CANNAE STOP THINKING LIKE THIS!"

***Kovar sighs. "I know most of those things you said, at least about the weapons, being a weaponsmaster is knowing those things, though I can't say I'm even nearly as in touch with them as you are now. As for your problem, I may have a way to help."

Adam: "N-no... No Kovar.. I can't do this.. I'm not a fighter. I don't want ta hurt nobody..." he starts to back away from Kovar, although as he speaks, his words become slightly more slurred, his eyes drooping, and his actions seemingly slowed. He seems to drift almost into his meditative state for a moment, before snapping out of it when his leg hits the end of the spear, and he yelps in pain.

Kovar: "You are a fighter, it's in your blood now, but you're not a soldier, and that's the heart of your problem. You've got all this talent, but absolutely no control at all. It's why you can't turn it off, and it's also why right now you're dangerous to those around you."

Adam: He drifted again for a moment, but kept his ground, biting his lip. Kovar's words were against everything he liked, but he couldn't really bring himself to just outright refuse him. At least not wholeheartedly anyway. The man did make quite a bit of sense. He looked over, and bit his lip, praying to the stone beneath him for strength. "I see what ya mean... I just.. I just need a bit of a break from the training that's all. Maybe a break from it all. Maybe a holiday."

Kovar: "Normally, I'd agree, but until you are taught at least the most basic level of discipline, something that would have normally been woven into your training, I'm not sure if it would be safe."

Adam: "I... I don't know... just something.. small.. right?"

Kovar: "What do you mean?"

Adam: "Just.. you know... a little more training. Nothing too serious. Nothing that's going to make me do more of this..."

Kovar: "Well, I'm not really sure I could teach you to kill things any better, I doubt there's a better warrior than you in the world. What I'd be teaching you is the discipline and the control so that you don't have to worry about getting angry and lashing out, and that you can stop or at least ignore your mind calculating the most efficient means to inflict damage all the time."

Kovar: "Normally the training in discipline and control would be woven in throughout the whole process in gradual doses. Seeing how you've short-circuited the normal process, you'd have to deal with getting nothing but training in discipline and control, all at once, in huge doses. We're in uncharted territory here, so I have no real idea what the side effects of that might be, but I do know it will help you."

Adam: "Well... I suppose that wouldn't be too bad... but on one condition."

Kovar: "Which is?"

Adam: He took a breath. "Something calming. Gentler, simpler, easy. Like farming. Or... note taking. Like paper work of the people here. Anything that doesn't have to do with weapons and soldiers and running an underground city."

Kovar: "I think we can manage to retreat into seclusion for a while. Though I will say one thing, you're going to have to come to terms and accept this new part of your self if you want to have any hopes of controlling it."

Adam: "I'll control it, when I'm ready to accept that can think of various ways to kill you through your nostrils. Until then I am more than happy to just let it past. Let's just go away somewhere. Like the isles you are so fond of. Just for a while."

Kovar: "Going there would be a very bad idea. If I ever go back to Mirn, I'll be killed on sight. So if I do return it had better be at the head of a massive army. We can head for the coast of the Sun Plains though. People are sparse there, and you'll be able to see the ocean and the beeches I keep talking about."

Adam: "The sun plains... that sounds... kind of relaxing. To be honest.. I would rather go see where your home is Kovar, but I suppose the sun plains will do as well. The thing I know is, I can't stay like this.. what if I hurt someone?"

Kovar: "Good, you prepare for the journey, but before we go I do need to speak with Burd and the others to leave them some orders for while we're gone."

Adam: "Alright. Out of curiosity though... can we... if just for me own sake... go to Mirn somehow? Even if it's just for a day?"

Kovar: "Mirn is surrounded by storms and choppy water, so getting to there and back is difficult, but that's not the real problem. I was exiled, the people there know only the lies of the king who betrayed me and would kill me and those who traveled with me as soon as look at me. There's nothing I want more in the world than to go back, but I know all too well what will happen if I do."

Kovar: "The Sun Plains are were I washed up, they're as close to Mirn as I can get for the moment."

Adam: "Then... then they will do. We only just got back. Let's give it a few moons... then we should go. Please."

Kovar: "You have my word. I think you should take it easy. Maybe Thadroin will be able to ease the burden for you till we leave."

Adam: "I will.. I will try to. I just.. I just need... ah... Sorry Kovar. I lost my way there. What would I do without you?"

***Kovar gives a warm smile, and reaches down to encircle Adam in a comforting embrace, "It's not something you'll ever have to worry about."

Adam: Kovar's arms - His left bicep, under the elbow. An excellent place to aim when needing leverage to break his arms - were warm, and he sighed quietly, taking them in. Kovar hadn't done him wrong before, why would he start now. Besides, they were going to go see the Sun plains soon, that would be excellent.

Kovar: Kovar's voice rumbled comfortingly over Adam, "Make sure to focus on taking deep, even breaths. Until we leave it'll be important for you to stay as calm as you are able to. Do what you have to, but the calmer you are the safer you are for others."

Adam: "Alright.. alright... I got it already... Umn... Can you.. uh... let go of me now? This is a little bit unruly."

***Kovar laughs. "You mainlanders are always so touchy and prudish about physical contact, I don't understand it."

Adam: He cocks a gentle smile. "Well maybe you southerners should keep ya hands to themselves sometimes. Or are you all crazy huggers back on the isles?"

Kovar: "I can't say I'm very different than anyone else, though I do try and restrain myself since I've come here."

Adam: "good. In the meantime, I better get back to work. There's a bloody lot of things to do with the new people in. And we need some kind of income, if we're going to be trading with the neighbouring villages. Best way ta get our name known."

Kovar: "Good, and I need to make some plants that can support a population of Burds and Jesups.

Adam: "Ye gads... what do ye know about farming then?"

Kovar: "Only a little, but I do know that I can use my power to make extremely hardy and huge plants."

Adam: "Ye want ta create a hardy plant? Like a tree?"

Kovar: "Hardy crops, at least. Also, perhaps especially large food animals. I was able to make both a giant goat, and a goat that could eat rocks when I was experimenting."

Adam: "Aye.. well.. if ye think ya can handle it, It's up ta you. I got me a little bit 'er work ta settle, so I'll get to it."

Kovar: "Just remember to do what you need to in order to keep calm."

Adam: "Aye aye.. just remember to water those plants."

EXCEED CHARGE
Kovar - Sellos

Leaving the passages of Under-Sellos, Kovar returned to the surface. Before he consulted with Burd and the others and informed him of what was to come, Kovar wanted to be ready with some solutions to the issues such as food production. So, he strode out to the small fields outside of Sellos, and took one each of several varieties of food crops that were planted. Taking the plants he had dug up, he walked to a secluded area far separated from the main fields, and replanted them. Then, he focuses his power, attempting to strengthen them, to let them produce more food from less, to allow these new plants to feed his new people.

Wheat, potatoes, carrots, these were all staple crops, and now Kovar was experimenting with altering their very nature by will alone. Perhaps there was something to this whole god business.

Experimenting with making improved food crops. Strength[+2] to try and strengthen the crops so that they can make more food with less soil nutrients.

EXCEED CHARGE
Kovar - Sellos

There were times where having control over the element of fire was an unambiguously good thing, and now was one of them. With a simple gesture, and a flick of his mind Kovar reduced the monstrous plants to ash. This whole thing was turning out to be far more difficult than he initially suspected it would be. Kovar recalled having more success when he worked with animals, as the huge lion that was even now faithfully following after him demonstrated. Perhaps, that was the direction he should focus his efforts.

Kovar decided to start with something small, figuring it would be easier to manipulate, and also easier to handle if there were more... unpleasant outcomes like the evil wheat. Snatching up another hare, Kovar focuses in his power. He would try and make the creature's meat as nutritious and filling as possible, focusing on strengthening those aspects of the hare. At the same time, mindful of the plant, he attempts to impose a soldierly sense of order to the creature's mind, in hopes of making it easier to command.

Trying to make super-rabbits which will hopefully be bigger and more nutritious than regular rabbits. Also, trying to make them easy to command.

Strength[+2] - To strengthen the rabbits, make them larger and more nutritious.

Divine Strategy[+2] - To make them easier to control and direct.

EXCEED CHARGE
Kovar - Sellos

quote:

Kovar: Having transformed enough of the rabbits to create a stable and growing population, Kovar returns to Sellos and seeks out Burd to plan for the future.

Burd: Kovar finds Burd overseeing the construction of a more useful training yard.

Burd: The Dwarves have been helping carve out some items like training bars.

Kovar: His voice carrying clearly across the clearing, Kovar calls Burd over, somewhat away from the others so that they might have some small bit of privacy.

***Burd gestures a few more times, makes some comments and wanders over to Kovar.

Kovar: "It's good to see a proper training yard going up."

Burd: "I'm doing my best to take care of the smaller details, sir."

Kovar: The lion has wandered in from the fields and taken it's place next to the general when he continues, "I've been experimenting with trying to enhance the foodstuffs so that the town can support more transformed individuals without causing a famine."

Burd: "Perhaps it might be more efficient to maintain a working class of individuals not transformed and simply acquire more arable land?" Burd offers politely under the belief the Kovar wanted a Lieutenant that would see things and have a mind of his own, and not simply a follower. Why else would Kovar have taken him under his wing after all, continuing after his transformation?

Kovar: "That does sound like a good idea, but I was mainly concerned with having enough troops to be able to secure that arable land first. How are the troops coming along?"

Burd: "General fitness has improved substantially since you first arrived, which has been the main focus of Jusep and myself." Burd replies before pausing and continuing. "The men and women still in the training have become more familiar with holding weapons, but against an actual trained armed force we would face difficulty in an invasion. Defensively speaking I think there would be enough to cause them to hold ranks better."

***Kovar is disappointed, though not surprised. "It sounds as though we'll have to primarily rely on those I have changed. Speaking of which, are there any others who wish to volunteer to undergo the change?"

Burd: "I believe so, although as you wished to learn to control it better first I was waiting on the information."

Kovar: "I've gotten a much better level of control. So far the situation with the fire hasn't repeated, and I've managed to enhance this guy here," Kovar rubs the lion's head, "And I've tested it with some other plants and animals."

Burd: "Hmm...well, do you think that you should? I've had a few people scout around and Thadroin and I have been keeping an eye on news from other towns. There are rumours of some strange lights in the Elysian Sands but beyond this no signs of danger. Is it wise to so radically change more people?" Burd asks as a polite counterpoint to your idea and to try and challenge you so that the plan is more well thought out.

Kovar: "Currently we're a kingdom without any real means of defending ourselves. There have been two incursions by something other, but for the moment I'm more concerned that any expansion on our part will inevitably bring us into conflict with either Taelos or Val Aman. That means that we need to have a force powerful enough to make them think twice about attacking."

Burd: "Perhaps our initial expansion does not need to be overtly aggressive? Thadroin tells me that Adam has been making some progress with opening trade with other towns nearby. Building up good will to us would allow us to begin expanding our influence without needing to risk our own forces and maintain the cooperation of our 'conquered' territories."

Kovar: "True, but I fear more that the two kingdoms will see us as a threat simply because we exist. Especially if the fact that people change into dwarves becomes widely known."

Burd: "I shall trust your judgement in how fast you can transform people and escalate our threat until we reach the point where we become a risk equal to our threat." Burd says simply.

Kovar: "I had planned to keep it small, if for no other reason that the change is actually quite difficult, but I think it might be helpful to have more than just you, Jusep, Barbara, and soon Algard as the only fully trained soldiers."

Burd: "We are not fully trained, Kovar. We have a greater amount of discipline and awareness than the others, but we are still learning how to use a weapon. Our progress is faster to be sure, we need to be to teach others which is why Barbara and Jusep are spending so much time sparring...among other reasons. But there are many things we don't know and we all know this."

Kovar: "Hmmm..." Kovar appears pensive, "I think I'll spend some time training just you, so you'll be in a better position to train the others."

Burd: "As you wish sir." Burd replies respectfully.

Kovar: "Anyhow, the reason I'm bringing this up now, is that in several weeks Adam and I will have to leave again, possibly for longer, and I'll be leaving you in charge of Sellos."

Burd: "Understood sir. I assume you will have plans for further development while you are gone?"

Kovar: "Indeed. I'd like you to put you in a position where you can continue to train the troops, as well as help integrate the surrounding towns that have agreed to join us into a more cohesive whole."

Burd: "Understood."

Kovar: "So, I think this week would be best spent making sure you have the skills to succeed. Can you find another to oversee the creation of the training ground? Considering the limited time, I think this training will be quite intensive."

Burd: "Yes" Burd replies and looks around. "Most of what I had wanted done is done anyway, and Jusep can handle the rest."

Kovar: "Good. When you're ready we can begin at once."

It would be an intense week indeed. Closing his eyes and calling upon the part of himself that had been born under the light of the starfall, he explored the infinite roads of possibility looking for the plan that would leave Burd the most prepared for his duties by the week’s end. When he finally grasped onto the strand that met his strict criteria, he began to apply it at once.

Each day would be a mix of weapons training, leadership, management, negotiation, and strategy. The lessons were mixed and would quickly flow from one to the other with little warning, mimicking the amorphous and changing challenges a commander would face in real life. Each of the lessons was also carefully constructed, drawing on Kovar’s long experience in such things, to help prime Burd to be able to pass along the relevant skill, though likely at a more normal speed. It was something that would not become obvious to Kovar’s lieutenant until he attempted to teach them himself.

In short, the entire week-long regime, lasting each day from before dawn till the dead of night, was to help mold Burd, an exceptional soldier, into an exceptional commander. Kovar knew that no war could be won by a man acting alone, he had seen far too many commanders fail in the task of delegating, and had ruthlessly taken advantage of that deficiency in others. Knowing that what he wanted to build was not just an army but a kingdom, having commander he could delegate to and trust would be key if he hoped to have any success. So, he poured all his power and talent into making Burd the first such commander.

Spending some time putting Burd through some extremely intense training in order to help him become the kind of commander Kovar can rely on to manage things in his absence.

D: Divine Strategy[+2] - To plan out the best possible training regimen to achieve the goal of teaching Burd to be a good commander.

M: Experienced General[+4] - Kovar knows a good general relies on good commanders, and he’s helped mold more than his fair share, the ability to delegate is key to his success.

Kovar - Over-Sellos

quote:

***Kovar looks pensively at the sky for a long time, things were moving in ways he had not expected, and now a decision of deep personal meaning to him had to be made. He then looks appraisingly at Burd for a moment before finally breaking his silence, "I think I have a way to resolve the deficiency in your training."

Burd: "I assume this involves teaching me weaponry?"

Kovar: "That is correct. I'm not sure I've ever told you this, but where I come from there is a long line of warriors who have developed a means to master nearly every weapon."

Burd: "That seems like it would only require sufficient time to master each, and also an amount of flexibility to learn the differences between each."

Burd: "Although, I suspect certain weapons would be better suited to our new size and weights."

Kovar: "There's more to it than that, it teaches you to quickly be able to determine the form and movements for even the most exotic and oddly designed weapons. Once you have fully mastered it, there is not a weapon you could find that you would not be able to fully wield within minutes of having first picked it up."

Burd: "There is a difference between wielding a weapon and mastering it though. Even among weapons that are almost the same there are differences in the blade and weight for example."

Kovar: "Indeed, you will not be able to match the skill of a person who has devoted their lives to a particular weapon, though there are ways to compensate, but you will still be more than prepared to match anyone other than such a devotee blow for blow."

Burd: "Hmm, this sounds like it would take some time. Is there sufficient time before you plan to leave?"

Kovar: "No, in whole it is a process that will take years. However, there will be time to start. It is important you understand the gravity of what I am to ask you. These lessons have been passed down master to student for generations, and most never take more than a few students in their lifetime. It is a sacred bond."

Burd: "I do not wish to sound disrespectful, but why is it sacred and to whom?"

Kovar: "It is sacred to me, at least, as it was to my teacher. The techniques to learn these skills have been closely guarded secrets, and to be chosen as a student means that your teacher thought you worthy enough to share them."

Burd: "This I understand and appreciate, but to which god is it dedicated?"

Kovar: "It is not dedicated to any god that I know of."

Burd: "That seems strange. For something to be sacred, it is holy and dedicated to or owned by a god."

Kovar: "Hmmm... I had never thought of that."

Burd: "Perhaps then I shall dedicate this to you?"

***Kovar seems taken aback, he had discussed such things with Adam, but for Burd to come to it on his own. "You think I am such a thing, a god that is?" He asks, tentatively, but showing no signs of disagreeing with Burd's proposal.

Burd: "Kovar, if you are not a god then you are close enough to one. Normal people do not and can not transform people like you have, or harness fire by will alone. Look at how you and Adam have changed things so completely in just two months, and everyone accepts it after a few days as though it is how things should be."

Kovar: "It is something Adam and I had considered, though we had not mentioned it lest we be thought mad. Now that you have come to this conclusion as well, independently of either of us, I have no qualms with accepting the title, should you wish to give it."

***Burd raises an eyebrow at that comment and smiles a little.

Kovar: Seeing Burd smile, Kovar adds, "So, are you alone in your belief?"

Burd: "I don't believe people have really realised what they do yet. It is more the way they act. If you were to decree your status to them they would probably realise."

Kovar: "As I said, I think it might be less than wise for me to come right out and declare myself a god, far too many crazed wizards and tyrants have done just that. You might have more luck on that front, I think."

Burd: "I shall work at it over time then."

Kovar: "Thank you. Now, back to the matter at hand. If you wish to dedicate it to me, then do so. I would be loath to turn away an offering by the man I consider my protege."

Burd: "You seemed to have been investing more time and effort into Adam, I must admit I am a little confused as to whom you refer to." Burd replies with a wry smile.

Kovar: Knowing it was a joke, Kovar addresses Burd seriously anyhow, "Adam is special, there is a bond between us like brothers, but I do not think he will ever become a general. He has the makings of an exceptional soldier, but though he may be a competent leader I do not think he has it within him to order men to their deaths. In you, I see someone who has all the things a great general needs, and I do not say this lightly. The burden of command is a heavy one, and not everyone can shoulder it."

Burd: "It's not surprising given you attempted to mould me in your image."

Kovar: "True, not that I expected it to be so effective." He recalls just how unexpected the results of that little experiment was. "I've never taken the opportunity to ask you what you think about that, and all of this really."

Burd: "It seems like the world is changing, we are changing it and it does not seem surprising that we are changed in return. Perhaps once I would have found this disturbing, but that was a different me, one who was looking for a place to belong while pushing everyone away."

Kovar: "Well, I certainly hope I've given you that place."

Burd: "I would say that you have."

Kovar: "Good. Now, I believe before we went into the metaphysical talk about whether or not I was a god, I was asking you to be my student."

Burd: "Yes, Sir."

***Kovar smiles. "It gladdens me to see that. This tradition is near and dear to my heart, and I hope that you will come to cherish it as I have. Perhaps one day you'll take on students of your own."

Burd: "Perhaps once the world has stopped changing as much, I fear there will not be much time for such things soon, Sir."

Kovar: "We'll have to see. Anyhow, I still have some time before Adam and I head south, so let's begin at once."

Burd: "Very well, Sir."

Working through the same routines as he did with Adam, Kovar began Burd’s training. This time he started with spears, since spears and pikes seemed like the weapons most likely to be wielded by the troop of Sellos, at least until they were more experienced. So, hopefully it would provide Burd with some basis on which to teach the others.

First came teaching him the basics of the guided visualization, controlled breathing, and relaxation techniques. Once Burd had gotten the hang of the pre-requisites, Kovar began the training in earnest. Burd would start by getting used to the weapons weight and heft, then moving through the basic katas. It was a different experience from working with Adam, Kovar noted. First, naturally, was the difference in size, it was far easier for Kovar to move the much smaller Adam through the katas, than the equally sized Burd. However, Adam rarely had more than a handful of ours at a stretch to work, while his training with Burd was able to run all day, with only short breaks for meals.

It was also different in another way, this time Kovar was drawing on the divine core within himself to try and aid the process. Burd had said he’d dedicate the bond to Kovar as a divine being, and the general wanted to live up to that.

Running Burd through some weaponsmaster training, starting with the basics of spears and pikes. To try and live up to Burd’s dedication of this to Kovar as a god, Kovar is trying to add a divine spin on the training.

M: Weaponsmaster[+2] - The training is at it’s core the same as what Kovar was taught by his teacher, techniques passed down from the ages, with each new generation adding their own style to them.

EXCEED CHARGE
Kovar - Sellos

quote:

***Kovar watched as Burd finished the days training, it had been slower than with Adam, but that was to be expected. What truly interested Kovar was the electric sensation when Burd swore the bond in his name, and the bond that had been growing since then.

Kovar: Sensing that his lieutenant was frustrated by his slower progress, Kovar walked over with his canteen and handed it to Burd, "You're doing well. Faster than when I was a student anyhow."

Burd: That comment seemed to cheer Burd a little, with only Adam to compare himself against he came up as inadequate.

Burd: "That's very kind of you to say sir."

***Kovar smiled. "I have a question, did you feel something strange while training, some sort of connection with me?"

Burd: "I have always felt that connection since you changed me, Sir." Burd replies seriously.

***Kovar seems somewhat taken aback, "Truly?"

Burd: "Indeed, sir."

Kovar: "It was as though I could feel your heart beating next to my own."

Burd: "I hope it was not displeasing, I am quite afraid I cannot live without my heart beating, sir."

***Kovar laughs, "Quite the opposite, it was reassuring in a way. Has your connection ever been affected by things like distance to me?"

Burd: "No. I always feel a firm and confident presence in the back of my mind. Sometimes I know that there is something I need to do, even though no one ever tells me it."

***Kovar seemed fascinated by this. "This is extraordinary. Can you give me an example of one of the things you've done as a result of one of these feelings?"

Burd: "I organised to have the yard set up." Burd replies, gesturing to where the Dwarves were still setting up the equipment.

Kovar: "Hmmm... I had been meaning to ask about something like that. It's always been said a good lieutenant knows what his commander wants before the commander himself does, though in this case it appears to be a bit more literal."

Burd: "Thadroin is much the same I think."

Kovar: "Really? That would have some interesting implications about Adam's subconscious then. Anyhow, this presence, how do you feel about it? I could attempt to weaken the link if you find it unpleasant." Kovar clearly does not wish to do so, but Burd is his protege and right-hand, so it's more important that he be comfortable with what was occurring.

Burd: "It does not bother me."

Kovar: "Would you be comfortable with trying to deepen the bond? If we can use it to better understand each other, or allow us to communicate instantly across great distance, or possibly allow me to channel my power through you it would be invaluable."

Burd: "If you wish to then I have no complaint, Sir." Burd replies in a neutral sort of manner.

***Kovar seems skeptical, "It is important that you are honest with me. I rely on your candor, and considering the nature of this connection I would not wish to damage it by pursing something you were uncomfortable with."

Burd: "I have no thoughts on the matter either way so. However you wish to proceed is your choice." Now Burd sounds kind of...emotionless. A flatness seems to spread across his face from his eyes.

Burd: Then they go out for a brief moment as another voice continues,

Burd: "It is your choice on how you interact with your people Kovar."

Burd: There is a timeless quality and a deep...depth to it.

Burd: Suddenly Burd blinks and looks apologetic.

Burd: "I am terribly sorry, sir, I fear I fell asleep for a moment."

***Kovar seems taken aback for a moment, but quickly tries to clamp down on his surprise to disguise what had just happened from Burd, though considering the bond that had just been revealed it might be a futile effort.

Kovar: "Can you tell me the last thing you recall?" Kovar's voice is carefully neutral.

Burd: "You were asking if you could work with our bond, which I did not mind. But I felt drowsy and I can't remember if I said so or not."

***Kovar seemed pensive for a moment. However, he decides that if Burd is truly to be his right hand, then he must be kept in the loop on occurrences like this, and be prepared to deal with them. "While you were asleep, you spoke with another voice."

Burd: "Another voice? Do you know who it was?"

***Kovar racks his brain, trying to think back to if he had ever heard that voice before.

Kovar: "No, I do not know their identity. It was odd."

Kovar: "Anyhow, until we know more I think our best way forward is to attempt to deepen our bond."

Burd: "As you say, Sir." Burd replied, as Kovar seemed to have made up his mind.

The voice, troubled Kovar, but worrying about things one could not control was a fools game, and if he strengthened their bond, Kovar would perhaps be better equipped to detect and shield Burd from outside forces attempting to influence him. No matter from which direction he looked at things, strengthening the bond seemed the natural way forward.

So, Kovar instructed Burd to sit down cross-legged on the ground, and Kovar sooned joined him. The two were facing each other, so close as to be almost touching. Leading them both into a meditative state, Kovar cleared his thoughts and knew Burd did the same. He reached deep within himself, finding the sense that had guided him, he had once felt it as a light, showing a way through a swamp of infinite futures illuminating all before him. Now, though, he attempted to focus the light, rather than illuminating many things to focus only on the bond between him and Burd, attempting to learn all there was to learn about it. At the same time, he reached for the power within him that had first changed burd and established this bond. It had proven itself to be the power to strengthen people, animals, plants, even armor. Now, he would pour all he could into strengthening the bond between him and Burd.

Trying to strengthen the divine bond between Kovar and Burd.

Divine Strategy[+2] - Kovar tries to focus this power down to examine and enhance the bond between them. After all, the very best lieutenants are their commanders' tactical and strategic alter-egos.

Strength[+2] - Kovar has the power to strengthen things, so now he turns the full force of his power to strengthen his bond with Burd.

Kovar - Over Sellos

quote:

Kovar: Still recovering from the shock of suddenly being back in only his own body, Kovar looks at Burd, surprised at the other's reaction, "Why? What happened?"

Burd: "Too deep. Too close. Any further and I'd stop being me. You'd stop being you. We'd be...I think we'd be inseparable."

Burd: "Just one thing that was once Kovar and Burd together."

Kovar: "That's... I don't know what to say."

Burd: "I know you didn't mean it Kovar, but you can't go that deep again."

***Burd is still visibly shaken by the experience.

Kovar: "I won't. I wonder why you sensed this coming merge, but I did not?"

Burd: "Something spoke to me, it warned me and that broke the link."

Burd: "I don't think it will help me again though."

Kovar: "Was it a voice, can you recall the sound of it?"

Burd: "A voice...yes, no. It was like a voice but not. It was more...as though it simply put the knowledge into me."

Kovar: "Hmmm... I wonder if it was the same one who spoke through you before?"

Burd: "I...couldn't say." Burd replies.

Kovar: "Anyhow, I think we should continue to work with this bond. We have reached it's greatest safe depth, but we can only even attempt it while we're both in meditation. To get the most out of it, we need to be able to access it instantly, regardless of our location. Do you feel up to continuing?"

Burd: "Not today, I think...I think I would like to be alone for a while sir. If that is okay."

Kovar: "Very well, but I hope we can make it a bit easier to get to the surface level of connectedness before I leave."

Burd: "Indeed. After something so incredibly and terrifyingly intimate though sir, I need to be alone and figure out who I am again." Burd says with a slightly odd expression.

Kovar: "I understand." Kovar pats him on the shoulder, "Eventually, I'd like to be able to communicate with you when Adam and I leave for his training. Also, eventually I think it might be possible for you to access my power to read the battlefield. For the moment though, let's call it a day."

Leaving Burd to meditate on his own outside of town, Kovar returns to the town center, just in time to see the dwarves finish the training yard. His lion, he had decided to name it Lehoia, after the word for it in the tongue of his homeland, perched itself on a nice raised platform near the center, and watched over the surroundings carefully.

Kovar quickly assembled the trainees, and moved right into training. So far, they’d been mainly focusing on basic fitness, and some simple drills, but their weapon-handling skills were still lacking. That would end today, and the new training yard had a large supply of wooden weapons they would use for training. That day and the next would be devoted to learning the basics of wielding a spear, the main infantry weapon, and Kovar turned all his years of experience into making sure the basics of it were burned inexorably into the memories of every recruit there.

However, he was aware of the limits of time, and so he very carefully attempted to release his power in waves, gently washing over the recruits and allowing them to train longer and harder than they’d be able to otherwise. He hoped that would allow them to at least master the basics of the weapon in time for his and Adam’s departure.

Training the Upper-Sellosian trainees on the basics of wielding a spear.

M: Experienced General[+4] - Kovar has worked with thousands of recruits in his time, he’s gotten the process down to a science.

D: Strength[+2] - Bolster the strength of the trainees, allowing them train longer and harder and faster than they’d normally be able to.
