![]() What is this game? Plants vs. Zombies is a different take on a tower defense game, made by Pop Cap games in 2009. Instead of you setting up sentries along a winding path to stop waves of enemies from reaching the other end, you set up plants on a straight path to stop zombies from reaching the other end, i.e. your house where they'll eat your brains. Ok so maybe it's not that different, but the game manages to keep the gameplay fresh by giving you more and more different types of towers plants as you progress, and changing some core mechanics every so often. It also has a very cute and charming aesthetic to it, and a pretty good soundtrack. I'll be tackling this game along with my good friend, Cool Sanders, and I hope you'll enjoy the ride! What can I expect from this LP? I'm hoping to keep the commentary a mixture of informative and humorous. I plan to cover the vast majority of the game, i.e. the main Adventure mode, at least a bit of the changes that take place in New Game +, and pretty much all of the alternate gameplay modes. I'm not sure if I'll be able to cover certain things that take a ton of money farming to unlock, but I'll do my best! The planned update schedule is an episode or two per week, though it may vary depending on how free Sanders and I are and when we can record. Will there be any thread participation? Yes! In this game, there are far more plants than you're able to use on any given level. So viewers in the thread will be able to vote on which plants we use for the most part. I'll explain this in more detail a few videos into the LP. In addition to that, I'm thinking about having guest commentators join Sanders and me, so if you're interested you can PM me your Skype name or post it in the thread and I might contact you if/when we want a guest commentator. Spoiler Policy This game doesn't have much of a plot, but please don't spoil any gameplay mechanics we haven't gotten to in the LP yet. This includes plants and zombies that we haven't seen, gameplay mechanics, minigames, etc. Light tagged spoiler discussion is ok, but try not to go on long derails about things we'll see in World 3 while we're still on World 1. Anything I mention in a video is fair game though, so feel free to go hog wild with that. If you wanna hear me tweet about updates and video games, feel free to follow @WindGodSety. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

![]() Plants ![]() Basic attack unit. Each pea does one damage. ![]() You can never get enough of these guys. ![]() The first of many single-use exploding units. ![]() The first of not very many defensive units. ![]() This guy is pretty cute. ![]() Basically better Peashooters that cost a bit more. ![]() Chomp. ![]() This guy is pretty awesome. Pretty much obsoletes Peashooters. ![]() Only has three range, but he's free and you can plant 'em pretty quickly. Always a good choice for night levels. ![]() I stand by my argument that these guys aren't as good as Sunflowers. ![]() This guy's pretty unique in that he can hit multiple zombies at once. Anyone within four squares of him will get hit by his attack. ![]() The cool thing about this guy is that he can get you free money when he eats a grave. Takes about 4-5 seconds to eat a grave. ![]() The best single-use plant when going up against one strong zombie. Less good for hoards. ![]() Seriously this guy is too cute! A great unit due to how cost effective he is at night. ![]() His low price and high range make him pretty alright. Usually exploding plants get the job done better. ![]() Honestly as long as you don't place these in stupid spots, the crater isn't ever much of a problem. ![]() The backbone of our aquatic army. ![]() For as excited as he is to get in the game, he looks pretty grumpy. ![]() Shoots three peas in three different rows. ![]() A deadly, aquatic plant. ![]() Definitely not a chili pepper. There are in fact red jalapenos. Clears an entire row of zombies. ![]() Extremely painful to step on. Also has shifty eyes. ![]() Also turns snow peas into regular peas. ![]() He's a lot angrier than his Wall-nut brother. Zombies ![]() Basic zombie. 10 HP. ![]() Slightly faster zombie. 10 HP. ![]() Sports a stylish road cone. 28 HP (18 from road cone). ![]() At night, it's usually worth throwing a Puff Shroom in the first column to waste this guy's pole, slowing him down. 17 HP. ![]() The bucket isn't nearly as stylish as the road cone, but it's not bad. 65 HP (55 from bucket). ![]() This zombie is actually the frailest one we've seen so far, with only 8 actual HP. HP 16 (8 from Newspaper). ![]() More durable than a Buckethead Zombie, as his screen door makes him immune to slow effects from Snow Peas. 65 HP (55 from door). ![]() San Francisco fighting Skulls! One of my favorite zombies. His gimmick can make him really dangerous if you don't take him out quickly. ![]() Oh man how did I miss bringing up that Chewliard pun in the video? ![]() Several different types of zombies can wear the Ducky Tube to swim in the pool. ![]() It must be hard to swim with only one flipper. ![]() Extremely deadly, and has a stylish snow cap. ![]() This guy's a jerk, and so is his dolphin. I feel the same way. It's a pretty straightforward game that needs no explanation. But this has a kind of NPR podcast sound to it that I just want to listen to.

I started watching just to see what it would be like, then ended up watching the whole thing, so good job. It's not the most complicated of games, but it's just entertaining to watch (as long as the commentary doesn't become a vulgar comedy act or anything).

I would have bought the XBOX version if it got ported to the PC. Looking forward to Garden Warfare next year.

Honestly, once you unlock the potato mine, this game is easy mode for the first board. Start planting sunflowers and use a mine in the lane of the first zombie that walks in. By the time the zombie gets to the mine, it will have armed and killed him, but it takes so long that you can plant several sunflowers before then. Also, no other zombies will spawn until that one dies. Yeah, I'm pretty good at super easy video games...

I actually just recently got this from a super cool goon who randomly gifted it to me, and I beat it not too long ago. I actually find Wall Nuts to be pretty good (until we get another plant that is better than them in every conceivable way), at least in the second set of levels where it gets a bit harder. It's pretty fun and actually requires some strategy later on. I'll be interested to see how you handle the game. Already our playstyles are kind of different. I mean, TWO rows of Sunflowers? Whaaaaaaaaaaat?

Pierzak posted:You're right, who the hell doesn't use 3 rows? I always found two to be enough. Unless some horrible tragedy happened and a bunch of your plants got eaten, anyway. But if that happened then you weren't using enough wall-nuts (or cherry bombs, or other defensive measures) and you deserved it The first video was more entertaining than I'd have expected from a Plants vs. Zombies LP; having someone new to the game along for the ride is definitely a good idea.

Speedball posted:I must have been playing it wrong. I usually just tried to have one row of sunflowers. Maybe I was making things harder on myself than necessary... Generally, two rows is the most efficient way to go. Having three is nice, if a little redundant, due to having a gigantic surplus of sun by the end of the round. You can swing one, though, especially if you have the Twin Sunflower if you're careful. Plus, the game is easy regardless of how many rows of Sunflowers you have. Unless you have none.

Not sure if its a spoiler as it involves a plant we don't have yet. My new favorite tactic is to use an onion at the top left/right of the lawn build 5 sunflowers behind them each while creating a bottle neck of death for the invading zombies! Enjoying the chat during the videos nice blend of random humor plus informative information. I like the idea that your are really the evil person of the game who has stolen the house from its true owner who just happens to be a zombie. You probably bashed Dav over the head so he can't recall this fact, YOU MONSTER,

Speedball posted:I must have been playing it wrong. I usually just tried to have one row of sunflowers. Maybe I was making things harder on myself than necessary... Having two is pretty much essential. You might be able to do one if you use Potato Mines to stall for time in underbuilt lanes, and you might be able to use just one row of twin sunflowers but you'd still need two rows to get to that point.

Dooky Dingo posted:Honestly, once you unlock the potato mine, this game is easy mode for the first board. I do this as well. Later on it's not so hot, since you're basically giving up a seed slot for some early extra sun, and the potato mine isn't that effective later in a level. Still a fun tool though.

I only made single rows in my playthrough. All it means is that you have to budget your sun a little bit more, making it slightly more difficult at best. I thought an LP of this game would be awful, but you gentlemen have proven me wrong. I look forward to the next update!

You guys were talking about how they came up with this game concept. From what I've read, it was mostly bottom up design. They wanted a tower defense game with characters, and in order for them to be stationary, they came up with the idea of them being plants. And then they wanted the enemies to come at you really slowly, so they decided to use zombies. That's basically where the flavor came from.
