Yeah, Teddie pretty much fulfills the role Yosuke started out filling - buffing and minor healing/casting when there's no need for buffs.

Yosuke spends the middle of the game trying to decide what he wants to be then finally decides, for no real reason, that he's been a mage the whole time.

I dumped Yosuke for Kanji as soon as I got him. My party stayed the same until Magatsu Inaba when I replaced Chie by bringing Yosuke back in and that was my final team.

He's a really good mage though. With Brave Blade and a good party-wide buff.

In my first playthrough i just kept Chie, Yosuke and Yukiko in my party for the entire game because they were the highest level and I didn't want to grind. In subsequent playthroughs I tried to switch my party up every dungeon or so, to keep things fresh.

Persona is not a hard game, you should really prioritise talking to the people you want to talk to, rather than gameplay benefit.

Some thoughts on social links:
1. Don't follow a social linking guide, those are tedious as hell.
2. You should definitely do the ones with Dojima and Nanako, be warned you have a limited time window and you need to max out expression for the final levels in them.
3. Party member social links are definitely worth it. Be warned, the penultimate one for each female PC lets you enter into a romance. Don't choose more than one girl, you will regret this. Also Chie is the Correct Choice.
4. Moon is a good story though it might seem bad initially. Sun is kinda ehn but useful for boosting expression. Strength is pretty cool.

The thing that got me worried was checking the answer to a quiz on an IGN guide and I completely didn't recognise what the guide said was going on. It looked like a mssive, poorly-written novel holding the player's hand through the tiniest detail - it was quite intimidating seeing YOU NEED TO HAVE TALKED TO THIS GUY OR YOU'RE DOOOOOMED when I'd only spoken to the chap once or twice. I've always been an "Oh poo poo I'm ten hours in but I didn't draw Leviathan better restart, yo" kind of guy, but I'm learning to put that aside and actually enjoy this game, rather than agonising over not getting 100% of stuff 100% of the time.

Another Q: Does each arcana have a story, or is there one person for each arcana and it's their story that you follow? Again, sorry to be dafy - the only JRPGs I've played before are Dragon Quest/Final Fantasy so I'm pretty much stumbling around in a pair of novelty glasses.

Fa la lanky down dilly, motherfuckers.
Each arcana in the Tarot; plus 2 from another version, are ingame, and represent a little storyline revolving around the character you established a relationship with. They also tend to fit with the arcana's symbology: The Magician is about overcoming immaturity, for exemple. In the case of your party members, you also get mechanical benefits from having a link with them, in the form of additional skills and helpful things in battle (like taking a mortal hit for you).

It's the latter. There's one Magician social link, one Chariot social link, and so on. So much so that guides will often just say "Talk to Temperance today" and you'll have to dig deep to remember who the hell that is.

Persona 4 is very forgiving when it comes to making mistakes or making extremely sub-optimal builds. It won't beat itself, but it's nothing like its SMT cousins, or even Persona 3. I wouldn't sweat the details too much.

That's good to know. I'm already slightly fretting about jobs/socialising in the game I'm playing to escape from the worries of work and socialising so it's good to know I can't hamstring myself too badly.

Really enjoying myself thus far, mind. The music is ace and there's something so satisfying about critting enemy after enemy in a single turn.

I've decided to make this my Christmas RPG. Never played a Persona game before so found it utterly baffling for the first 8 hours or so. I also made the mistake of starting on hard, like an idiot.

All that aside, I think I've finally gotten to grips with the combat and I'm having a whale of a time. I'm also gradually closing in on understanding, you know, the whole god drat idea of Personas and how they work. Cautiously optimistic. I did find myself checking a guide and then fretting about having ~missed some social interaction~ but then I realised I'm going to have more fun just getting on with the game and not panicking over getting every drat thing right first time.

Any beginner tips (I'm at the bath house dungeon at the moment :captainpop: ) would be very welcome!

If you're playing Golden, Hard is actually around the difficulty of the old Normal. They buffed a lot of stuff and made it MUCH easier to gain levels. Early on it'll be challenging, but if you're past the first dungeon it'll actually start getting easier.

Don't panic about missed interactions. You have a full year to do whatever you can, and if you miss something that's what New Game+ is for.

Fuse often. You can choose what to pass on so if you have a persona with some good skills you want to keep you can fuse it into something else and probably keep those skills. Persona gain levels very slowly in combat and gain most of their levels from the initial S Link bonus in fusing. Eventually you'll probably settle on one or two "main" persona and have a stable of guys you switch to if you need something specific.

Buffs and Debuffs are much better in Persona than most other games. If you debuff the enemy's defense and buff your own attack you're doing twice the damage you would normally. Late game battles usually assume you're using these.

Tarunda - Debuff Attack
Tarukaja - Buff Attack

Rakunda - Debuff Defense
Rakukaja - Buff Defense

Sukunda - Debuff Dodge/Hit
Sukukaja - Buff Dodge/Hit

-Unda is a debuff, -Kaja is a buff. If anything has Ma before it, it's the same spell but it targets everything instead of one guy - So MaTarukaja buffs your whole team's attack. The spell names in SMT games are really confusing at first.

That's really handy! The spell names did baffle me at first but I think I'm getting the hang of it now.

The first dungeon basically taught me to use buffs/debuffs simply by handing my rear end to me time and time again. I've never really bothered with buffs/status effects in RPGs before, preferring instead to just whale on the enemies with magic/physical attacks, so it's fun to actually be railroaded into a new playstyle.

God help me my WoW-playing wife cackled with glee when I told her I was finally debuffing bad dudes.

Most of the spells draw from ancient languages, mainly Sanskrit, but I've never been able to find what the buffs/debuffs mean

Vita save files are encrypted to hell and back. I don't know that anyone's ever found out a way to use another person's save file for a Vita game.

E: Or even do local backups of them without having to back up the entire game along with it.

Games are a total mess until, like, the last second. Gameplay trailers and demos are specifically made for that purpose, rather than being sliced out of what they already had. They may not have anything interesting to show.
