It's not really a thing unique to Gamefreak, a lot of game developers have inexplicable feature amnesia these days

Well, not really inexplicable. A lot of the time it's just so they don't need to put as much work into the new game and they can bring it back in a later title or as DLC while pretending it's a new feature again.

I thought the reason Pokemon features lagged the way they did was that they developed stuff in parallel and it didn't cross pollinate?

Why does everyone think I'm going to get in trouble?

Voltorb Flip exists because Game Freak decided to repeat what they did with European Platinum and not include the Game Corner for international releases. Instead of just having the Game Corner be a place to randomly get coins from machines, they included an awesome mini-game but then they decided to omit the Game Corner entirely from B/W and on.

I remember the Australians and some unnamed Euro states being blamed for having to drop all references to gambling in Pokemon.
In Gen 4 (not sure exactly when) I ended up having to change the field trainer "Sasurai no Gambler (Rambling Gambler)" to something like Private Eye just because the graphic had a guy wearing a trench coat.
It was either that or change the graphic entirely, so we went with the path of least resistance and altered the text accordingly.
I'm not sure exactly which gen, but there was also some Cueball (? some bald biker) who wants to lay wagers or something on your performance.
I thought that totally fit the definition of gambling, so that had to be toned down.
I don't recall how exactly I worked around that, but it snuck by Legal and that's all that mattered.

Yeah, I found FFC (No. 2 in the so-far 3-title series) to be like Pokemon Ranger for their wordy stories and gimmicky mechanics.
Not sure if they're huge sellers. The last couple can be had for around 70% off on Amazon.jp.

I'm actually finding it rather charming! Then again, I've never really had a problem with the writing/presentation of any of the PMDs, and I played the DS ones to death (I played some of the GBA, but not enough to get into the story).

I'm on chapter 4 or 5 and it feels a little 'on rails', but I also understand there are a lot of mechanics to mystery dungeon games.

Still, it's otherwise given as Babby's First Roguelite, and I feel especially bad, having given up on Etrian Mystery Dungeon and yet enjoying this. :sweatdrop:

Johnny's Payday Panic is a game by the Cooking Mama devs and it looks to be similar to those games but wackier and based on fast food.

Etrian Odyssey Untold is pretty good for $10 bucks. Couple questions:

I just reached the third floor and the big monster. I'm getting used to the combat system and I've been able to take out several of those boulder boars without putting myself at too much risk (paralyze and the fact that you have plenty of time to buff and defend against their charge makes it pretty easy). Still, the average monster fights are pretty easy. Can I expect them to get more complicated and become more of a puzzle?

Can I do classic play through and a regular play through concurrently? Knowing that there's a bunch of poo poo in the store I'll likely never use kind of sucks and now that I have an idea of what I'm doing I'm tempted to create my own party and try the randomized dungeons.

Switch to classic mode. There's way more fun to be had with the class system than with their awful storyline.

What difficulty are you playing on? Expert is actually the normal mode in EO games. Dungeons also are never randomized in the series, they're the same layouts every time you play. And unfortunately, you can't do a Story and Classic playthrough at the same time, because they didn't add multiple save slots until Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold.

Pokemon SMD is a Roguelike based off the Shiren the Wanderer style of roguelikes. It's effectively a semi-random dungeon crawler based somewhat around collecting loot to survive.
Stella Glow is a SRPG from the makes of Luminous Arc.

Okay, I haven't played Shiren or Luminous Arc so that doesn't explain much to me.

I do like roguelikes however.

And I generally enjoy SRPGs, though I wasn't able to fall in love with Fire Emblem Awakening because it felt like it was too overwhelming as within the first two hours you're given 30 characters to manage and the battles are loving huge scale. I prefer smaller scale SRPGs.

Well, Stella Glow is a bit more Shining Force than Fire Emblem if that's more your jam. It is good. It is also very anime.

SPMD is probably the best iteration of this particular series. It isn't as obtusely hard as Shiren the Wanderer but still challenging enough. If you like Pokemon, seeing them as actual characters who talk and have all these stories behind them is something people rather enjoy about those games.

Pick according to taste, I'd pick both if I could. (thanks for nothing NOE)

Never played Shining Force either, so have no idea what that means. Final Fantasy Tactics is my favorite SRPG though.

As for pokemon, I don't give a poo poo about pokemon themselves and I generally don't like the traditional pokemon games, but I do love roguelikes. I'd be in it for the roguelike, not the pokemon.

Broadly speaking there are two schools of SRPG, somewhat larger stuff like Fire Emblem and XCom and somewhat smaller (tactical) stuff like FFT. Luminous Arc takes its cues from the latter

loving hell yes. If Stella Glow is in the school of the latter like FFT, then it is extremely my poo poo.

It's funny, I enjoyed XCOM a lot more than Fire Emblem Awakening. I think it was because in XCOM, all my soldiers were generic characters, so death didn't phase me beyond the pain of loosing high ranked folks. Fire Emblem Awakening bothered me since everyone is named characters, I would have extreme anxiety about taking anyone into battle.

The comparison to Shining Force here means that, while your characters will level up and learn new abilities, you can't branch them out into other classes to learn those abilities like you can in FFT. This lends itself to having characters that are more specialized at certain things, although at least a few characters in Stella Glow are pretty well-rounded in terms of what they can do. The base gameplay is a lot like FFT in that you have a turn order you can reference that is affected by things moving/acting, you can move and then act or act and then move, etc. There are some differences, though, like gaining a level completely restoring a character's HP and SP.

For better or for worse, I made a pretty long post in the 3DS thread about my thoughts/impressions on Stella Glow after playing through five chapters, so here's that if you want some more info about it and what it does differently from other SRPGs: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3700920&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=478#post453020720

So I tried to buy Pokemon SMD off the eShop, and it seemed to work, it downloaded and everything, but it crashes before getting to any intro videos/the main menu and forces the system to restart. Ive literally never seen any other game on the 3ds break like this, and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to fix it. Ive run the repair tool from the eShop, Ive redownloaded it twice, I formatted the SD card (after backing things up on my computer), nothing changes. Other games previously downloaded do work correctly still.

I assume its not a problem with the game itself, but something with either the SD card or the 3DS, but I have no idea where to turn to next. Has anyone had any issues like this, and were they able to fix it?
