if you're not wasted, your day is.

F1 SASS gift purchased and shipped, but was feeling a little left out, so went ahead and purchased my tickets for Montreal 2013. Grandstand 11, Section 2, Row F.

I hope all my research paid off as it looks like those will be some great seats. Only other GP attended was Monza 2009, GA ticket only and really wasn't able to follow much action (however I was able to stand 15ft from the main straight and let the cars vibrate my brain as the blew by).

Off season is hard.

TBH, I go into most areas like the F1 section rarely and almost never comment there anyway, so I only ever see the stuff that comes up on my personalized homepage. There are many subreddits like that, where a proper web forum is a better way to get info and post things, but for getting a general feel and read random news stuff there's a lot that's good about most of the subreddits. Stay away from the memes, in-jokes and crappy stuff and you can get a lot more out of the site that what you might think.

I won't white-knight for Reddit (and if you like porn there's plenty to find on there, surprise, it's the internet) but there are definitely plenty of quality sections on there, especially for some of the more specialized interests. And there's FYAD-level stuff too, but yeah, there's something to be said for having a paywall like SA's to keep some of the riffraff out.

e: anyway, sorry for going OT I guess - I suppose I can that I think all this fuss over the yellow flag passing is bordering on funny and Vettel is the deserving WDC because he has the most points at the end of the season.

I know, there really is a lack of good F1 discussion on the internet. As much as this is called the 'worst thread', it's still the least worst place for discussing F1 I've found.

Saying that I haven't really dedicated much effort. Autosport is dire, Reddit is Reddit and that's about it.

Also, as much as I wanted Alonso to win the title at Brazil I hope this protest goes nowhere. I want to see Vettel beat cleanly on the track, not via some minor infraction of the rules.

I will be satisfied if we get tears from Christian Horner though,

Just to be clear, this is not the same "passing under yellows" that was discussed during the Sky F1 broadcast. This is a different incident that happens after turn 3. Judging by the sequence of flashing lights in the video, Vettel clearly passed the Torro Rosso under yellow flags.

Trust Ferrari to want to drag this through the courts of arbitration or whatever, how ridiculous.

edit: well the BBC article says

quote:

However, the governing body does not need a protest from Ferrari to investigate further. In fact, its own rules appear to oblige it to do so.
Article 179b of the international sporting code says: "If, in events forming part of an FIA championship, a new element is discovered, whether or not the stewards of the meeting have already given a ruling, these stewards of the meeting or, failing this, those designated by the FIA must meet… summoning the party or parties concerned to hear any relevant explanations and to judge in the light of the facts and elements brought before them."
It adds: "The period during which an appeal in review may be brought expires on 30 November of the year during which the decision that is liable to review has been handed down, if that decision is likely to have an effect on the result of a championship."

And the penalty is a strict 20 seconds added to the race time if the race has been finished, so at least there's no arguing there.

Apparently it all hinges if the marshal post was waving a green flag - there must be fan or FOM footage that will show whether or not that is the case.

Yeah I've just seen an image showing a waved green flag at a marshal's post at a point before Vettel completes the overtake. I didn't realise but actual cloth flags > flag light boards.

So the pass was legal, I agree!

This is going to be really easy to check because the FIA will have access to the full race footage from every camera so the same angle that was used to go 'hey there's a green flag at that marshal's post on this other lap' can be used to see if the same happened on the lap in question.

yes:

BBC article posted:

If there is any discrepancy between a driver's dashboard and the trackside indicators, the flags and lights take precedence - the display is meant solely as a further driver aid.
The footage clearly shows Vettel passing a flashing yellow light in Turn Two and another at the exit of Turn Three, after which he overtakes Vergne down the straight, completing the move before reaching a flashing green light, indicating the end of the yellow zone, before Turn Four.
The yellow flag indicator in his cockpit is on the whole time.
The rules dictate that the 'yellow' zone ends only when the driver passes the first 'green' indicator.
However, on the footage from Vettel's car it is not possible to see clearly the marshals' post that is situated on the inside of the track at the exit of the pit lane - after the yellow light at Turn Three.
It is possible that the marshal there was waving a green flag. If he was, the pass on Vergne would be legal and the result would stand.

Also Carbonate posted this on the last page (compare the order of the cars in the picture to the order of cars in the video)

Carbonate posted:

There was a green flag drivers right at pit exit. Number of lights don't necessarily coincide with the number of stations! There's only 16-18 FIA lights in Montreal, and 21 stations. In some places they are before or after a certain station. The real cloth flags are all correct, and the pass was very legal.

You had two 'single waved yellow' lights prior to the incident (If it's a double waved, it flashes twice as fast, and is actually pretty obvious) which in a blind entry type corner is pretty standard. Why there was a light after the incident i'm not sure, but the lights honestly do a few weird things at times, and race control can override them at any time for whatever reason.

There is at least one station with real flags at the pit exit, and another at the entry to T4. During that same area of track (exit T3 to Entry T4) there is only the one (flashing green) light. If you press the "single waved" button on the controller for the light and you are at light station 1, the very next light station will automatically switch to green without that marshal pressing any buttons.

SO you have more stations with real flags than with the lights, Vettel passed a green flag (at drivers right at pit exit) indicating the incident and track was in the previous sector, thus KERS/DRS/floors it and we're good.

So yeah, legal pass.

Yeah clearly a legal pass once you see the green flag being waved, I just hadn't followed any of the discussion going on between the race and 10 mins ago - and then I saw that tweet from the bbc journalist. If we are able to disprove it so easily why are the bbc even bothering following up on it...?

FYI, basically as soon as they pass something yellow (flag or light) they cannot overtake. As soon as they pass something green (flag or light) they can overtake again.

When you see the lap counter flash yellow and go away, it's not some magical gps wizard detecting a car running 5 feet off track, it's a corner marshal hitting a button on a light control panel, then that info gets sent to the FOM feed and all of the cars.

One doesn't carry more weight than the other, (and I can do up some funky diagrams showing that if anyone cares) but the steering wheel is info only and only gets that info from the light system, not the cloth flags, so it's not the complete picture of flag statuses around the entire circuit.
