Re-did the bullet drop one, is there anything else people would like illustrated to do with War Thunder? I've got some bomber drawings i can use along with the two fighter ones i made.

Zaodai posted:Ah, I was thinking energy as an in-game resource, not physics energy. I was in a video game mindset not a flight mindset. How much high school physics do you remember? When dealing with fighters, you have to realize they have "potential energy" and "kinetic energy." KE represents how fast you're going at a given time, PE represents how much energy you have "stored up." In a flight sim, altitude is your primary reservoir for PE. When you dive, you convert Potential Energy into Kinetic Energy - you pick up speed, but lose altitude. The heavier your plane (American planes are especially hefty), the faster you'll dive. You'll also (generally) retain more kinetic energy coming out of the dive, allowing you to retain a lot of your speed and your initial climb will be faster. You never want to be all the way down "on the deck" in an energy fighter, because you have no more Potential Energy to convert and you're vulnerable until you can climb away.

But it was dropped in context with other game mechanics, so I wasn't sure if there was actually a bar somewhere labeled "energy", because that isn't a completely foreign thing to games. Or a hidden stat for your crew or something. Goons find crazy rear end poo poo that isn't obvious all the time, so my brain went to that first.

Wait, you can edit bullet drop now?

There's some setting to adjust your guns for drop so they will converge at the, uh, convergence point.

What setting is it? Seems very useful.

It's also worth noting that the rougher you are with the plane, the more energy it will bleed. If you dive on someone at 600mph, then yank the plane in a blackout turn to try to get on their 6, you have bled off a ton of energy. That's why if you watch someone like Ramjb, when someone avoids his dive on them, he will pull back up into a looping hammerhead, converting his speed back to altitude while also changing direction. By doing this, he is able to get multiple passes at a target while still holding an energy advantage on them. If they try to follow him up, they will stall and end up being a juicy target as he turns over. That's not to say never yank on the stick, just try to avoid it unless you are going for broke. This probably applies more in historical, I don't try to understand the flight models in arcade.

So taking the 37mm cannon Stuka into historical battles is pretty much the funniest thing ever. So far my favorite was sticking to a Dauntless, lining him up, and watching a friendly 109 scream in only to get plastered by a 37mm burst. He then sperged the rest of the game about how no other German pilots understand how to fly their planes. Now to just hit rank 8 and "accidentally" shoot everything forever with the 50mm.

Japanese planes aren't made of paper after all. I blew apart a plane in HB, and I ran into its wildly twisting body, because I'm dumb. This happened: ![]() I then flew about 12 km back to base and lined up for a landing. ![]() Soft landing ![]()

I love when I do basically all the work on an enemy plane and then some asshat lands a single hit to steal the kill.

Am I the only one having trouble believing that WT will have ground forces by the end of this year? Given the rate of updates so far it seems a bit overly optimistic when there still seems to be large chunks of the existing plane trees missing, particularly on the Japanese line and things like the economy still in need of tuning, to say nothing of how HB is turning out right now with it being flooded by Doras and such. Then again, maybe there's a huge amount of things being held back with the next patch that'll help sort this stuff out. If not, I suspect it'll be more like sometime next year. Volkerball, I am bummed that my team was so dumb as to chase you back to your base when we had you guys outnumbered.

"guys i took out their base aa... go there" "no, idiot, shoot ground targets" "ground is lost, we need to camp and run them out of planes" We lost, because the team listened to him and not me.

Nobody ever bombs ground targets for poo poo. Every arcade game is lost if you personally don't go out and kill at least 15-25 ground targets by yourself.

rossmum posted:"guys i took out their base aa... go there" I will never understand people who want to camp and kill planes. It drat near never works because most of the armored columns are killed by dive bombers 5 minutes in and all it takes is a level bomber with half a brain to finish off pillboxs and boats. And at the same time I kinda wish for arcade battles to have softer mobile targets. It's just so depressing to realize you're down 20 ground units and can do near nothing in most fighters. Or watching some crap bomber miss over half the heavy tanks because they think 50kg bombs do more than kick up dust without direct hits.

First time out in my Yak 9T there was a B-17 menacing us from above. I chased him for 10 minutes. I look up and realize that the enemy team has almost won, and they've almost got a full bar...this is ground strike of course. I look behind me and 2/3rds of my team is right on my rear end also chasing the B-17. We never caught the B-17 because they were climbing at 1000m every few seconds, and we lost the match.

To be honest as a pubbie it took me a while to understand that bombs even had "kilograms" attached to them and the blast would be bigger. Well been a while but I don't hold grudge when this happen

Well been a while but I don't hold grudge when this happen Truth be told, right about now 50 / 100 kg bombs seem just as good as the heavier bombs for busting "light" targets like ANY kind of tank / aa / light targets like that. In fact, light pillboxes will go down to one 250 lb bomb aka a 100 kg one if you hit good with it. Same with heavy tanks in HB. You want 1000 lb bombs for normal pillboxes, and the same for airfields I guess - but at least in HB, you mostly want tiny bombs because they "balanced" the hell out of blast range on big bombs, making them completely useless for hitting in the general area of something and blowing it up by proximity. Might be different in Arcade, but I think it's the same waltz there, mostly.
