BURNS at the touch

What is Zombi?

Zombi is a first-person arcade adventure, it draws inspiration from the George A. Romero film Dawn of the Dead; the player controlling four protagonists exploring a zombie-filled shopping mall. It draws from many parts of the film, including the gunshops, the escalators, and the articulated trucks used to block the entrances. If a character's health was depleted, he turned into a zombie, which then roamed the room they died in. Zombies can also be killed either by numerous body shots, or a single shot to the head. Characters were named after the creators of the game. It is also Ubisoft's very first game ever, released in 1986.

Wait. That's not right.

This is ZombiU, a spiritual sequel and the best reason to own a WiiU if you don't have IRL friends to play with in your home.

It got a mixed
Critical Reception. You should pretty much ignore this; the reviewers were expecting something totally different than what came out. Ben Kuchera over at Penny-Arcade had much more favorable things to say. Basically, it boils down to this being one of the most intense survival horror titles of the decade. The tagline is "How long will you survive?" not "Fight Zombie Hordes and be a whitelabel Left 4 Dead"

The reviewers (and many gamers) were expecting this...

imma smash u zombi!!

and got this instead:

you will never feel more vulnerable than this

This is where ZombiU shines the most. Nothing else on the WiiU comes close to ZombiU in terms of integration, and this is a game that just wouldn't work on any other system. The uniqueness of the audio on the gamepad, having to look at a different screen to rifle through inventory, holding the WiiU gamepad up to the screen for infrared - it is all perfect. The game is a tech demo, but it's a tech demo that works.

There really aren't any. Other than the mystery "prepper" who speaks to you via the WiiU gamepad, most people you meet are already members of the other team.

If you're going to complain about anything in this game, it's going to be the unforgiving, hateful difficulty. Zombies don't go down easy, and you are perpetually underarmed. Still, it's a terrifying blast to sneak around destroyed London, trying to advance in the game. And if you die? You respawn, with your corpse now a zombie that needs killing so you can get to your last body's backpack full of goodies.

Anyway, talk about ZombiU!

ZombiU is a cool game for cool people and you should buy it.

Also you didn't mention that if you die before getting your poo poo back it's gone forever. Which is especially painful when you get murdered by your last character

You could add me to that player list if you like, my NNID is toriko11.

I just finished my first normal playthrough of the game a couple of days ago, took 11 survivors. It was definitely fun, and is the kind of game that you can feel yourself becoming appreciably better at. Instead of stumbling headlong into a group of zombies, shooting and hoping for the best, you learn to appraise a situation tactically and develop strategies to compensate for how weak you really are. When zombies can kill you in one hit, you need ways to mitigate risk, and as you learn how to do that you find yourself living longer.

Now to work through survivor mode...

So far I was pumped as heck for this game, picked it up with my WiiU...and have been pretty disappointed, even from someone that likes survival stuff. Not sure if it's a combination of the muddy graphics, awkward controls (maybe an issue with the gamepad and not ZombieU specifically), but I was really not that psyched. Going to play through a couple more hours and see if it grows on me.

From what I've heard this game sounds like a cross between Dark Souls and old-school Resident Evil, which seems like it would own on paper. Unfortunately I don't have the time or cash to grab a WiiU or this title

This is a good game.

Also, in case anyone isn't aware (and a lot of people don't seem to be) weapon upgrades are permanent, across all weapons of that type for the rest of your game, even after your character is murdered in a most horrendous way.

Yes so PROTIP: Upgrade your first pistol all the way first because you'll be coming back to it a lot.

There is a shortcut a short time after you get inside. Once you get to the room with the Doctor there the door to the right and around his isolation room when you first enter it leads to a basement with a sewer access.

It is a bit of a hike before that though.

Honestly it's the analog sticks I'm having a problem with, but I might just not be used to FPS style controls on a controller, as I mostly do PC gaming. :\ Also, the screen's really kind of washed out for me, which is frustrating. That all being said, I really dig the concept.

orborborb
Jan 20, 2004

This game is laggier than Killzone 2, making it very hard to aim. But everyone should still play it if the atmosphere and methodical scavenging roguelike gameplay seems interesting to you. It's not an action game after all.

The washed out blacks is because the Wii U outputs 16-235 RGB which only some TVs correctly recognize and expand to cover the full 0-255 range of color values. This SHOULD be easily fixed in a Wii U update, its not limited to ZombiU, everything the Wii U outputs including netflix movies have this issue. You may be able to find a setting in your TV for "limited" RGB. Otherwise just dim the backlight as much as possible.

But the kids love us.

Just finished the game tonight. My first run clocked in at almost 18 hours. Lots of dying, plotting, more dying, more plotting, tense moments that turned out to be rats, etc etc etc. I wasn't expecting superior survival horror and was pleasantly surprised. The game looked good and ran smoothly for me, I went through a lot of survivors (hey I suck!).

This part kinda sucked though (endgame stuff)-- Died right before I reached the rooftop at the post credits mad dash for the copter. And now that save file is closed off so if I want to try and make it, and of course I do, I need to do another run through.

Does anyone know if you have to get kills with a weapon to level it up? I'm wondering if shooting a zombie and then finishing it off with the bat will still get me exp, or if I need to do it the other way round. Trying to get my survivor super good at handguns.

I've only ever gotten the little "you leveled up this" ding when I finished one off with the gun so i'm pretty sure you have to kill em'.

Me too, I feel as though I missed out on a key element of the story arc. I thought about posting a spoiler request on miiverse just to find out

Edit: Nvm I didn't realize you we're referencing the end game I died prior to the first chopper rescue and it cut straight to the chopper being engulfed in ravens not sure what was supposed to happen after or before that cut scene because it jumped directly into the next objective to refuel the generator

It sucks that this game got such mixed reviews. It's not flawless, I'm sure, even the dick-ridingest of reviews complained about the repetitive melee combat, scripted sequences breaking immersion, "okay" visuals etc.

But Zombie Souls with survival mechanics thrown in there seems like such an awesome idea. When the demo comes out I'll see if I like this game and maybe get the full version, but it was annoying to read all the reviews by authors expecting an action game. It's funny because facing down an army of the undead with a gun feels great. And then you run out of ammo and feel horrified. It's almost like ZombiU is a survival horror game

Just got to Buckingham Palace with my 14th survivor. He is a 24 year-old pimp and has been the best survivor so far. I find this absolutely hilarious. Oh and the game is a lot more fun now that I've figured out how to play it. Still haven't seen any goon zombies yet though Do I just need to be friends with people who have the game to see their zombies show up?

Does the game have an NG+? It's perfect for it. Beat the game with lovely resources, losing survivors left and right, pooping your pants.

Play through the game again with end-game high power rifles and zombie bite counter-measures.

Where is he? Where's who? Your leader! He's...to the east. Thanks for the infor...MATION!

I haven't friended anyone at all yet, but I had a few zombies from other players show up in my game. It was kind of nice because one was right outside my safehouse, so I didn't need to go on a scavenging mission as I was able to loot a bunch of stuff within seconds. Then I went back into my safe house and was unable to save because it "wasn't safe to save." Turns out there was another player's zombie inside my safe house.

I finally got into the groove of the game over the weekend. The game really picks up quickly and I'm having a lot of fun with it. Sadly, I had to go out of town and I won't be able to join in on the event or whatever is going to happen tomorrow. I've only put a couple hours in so far, but I'm already hoping for a sequel.

I think I lost 4 survivors here, one of them had slightly more loot than the other (3rd guy?). As one goon put it in the general Wii U thread, it's a "war of attrition" and if they just kept respawning I'd probably have given up.

Now I'm on my 6th survivor, a deserter, who is doing okay except that I'm becoming more chickenshit as I go. Maybe that's appropriate for this survivor?

Couple of spoiler-ish questions, nothing too major, I'm not too far into the game:

Question 1: Where is the CCTV junction box in the sewers on the way to Buckingham? I found the shortcut to the safe house (thank god!) but didn't have any luck finding the box.

Question 2: I'm outside, it's pouring rain, found a CCTV box in a room with a rifle and some ammo. How far away am I from Buckingham now?

It's the kind of game where I really have to force myself to keep pushing forward because it just gets way too tense for me. Can really only play it for 30, 40 minutes at a time.

edit: Someone at NeoGaf posted that as long as you go back to the same area you just were at and don't travel to a different area or something that the zombies you killed won't respawn. Confirm/deny?
