Saints Row: The Third is the third game in the Saints Row series. Developed by Volition Inc and published by THQ, and released in November 2011, the game could somewhat inaccurately be called a "GTA Clone." The similarities are apparent - both games feature gunplay and vehicular mayhem against a backdrop of modern-day organized crime. Where they differ, of course, is in the execution.

Saints Row 2 struck a fantastic balance between gritty street drama and utter madcap foolishness. Saints Row 3 takes it a step farther - gone is really any semblance of drama, replaced by VTOL jets, laser tanks, and over-the-top Japanese game show-themed bloodsport.

In short, it doesn't make a lot of sense, but Saints Row: The Third is a hell of a lot of fun.

The game really shines, however, with its beautifully implemented two-player drop-in-drop-out online co-op. There's no better way to explore the gritty industrial hellhole of Steelport, nor to follow the Third Street Saints on their mission of redemption and revenge, than with a buddy.

To that end, starting in Video 2, I'll be cashing in a hefty chunk of goodwill to bring some friends along for the ride. We'll try to progress through the story at a reasonable pace, but for some reason, shenanigans always ensue.

So join me and a bunch of madmen as we play Saints Row: The Third.

Murder time!

There's some goons in the city
Driving 'round for kicks
Stirring up some trouble

They look like they are living bobble-heads in the tutorial level...

Anyway, I expect great things from this.
I mean, opening with a faux-Japanese commercial and going into a gunfight... and then signing autographs while in the middle of it.

The fact that the first military base you assault has that Unicorn as its emblem really shows how wimpy they are when just 2 people can run up with handguns and take it over.

This has the makings of a great LP already.

Perhaps you could change your outfit every recording session?
I hear there are a lot of character customization options.

I'm strangely attracted* to having Male Voice 1 (Troy Baker) on a female character. It's so wrong but it feels so right. I'd be happy if Troy Baker voiced everyone ever.

*exaggeration for the sake of comedy; I do not claim an actual attraction to this strange scenario or Troy Baker's voice, although he has a drat good voice

You seem to be showing off the game really well and I can't wait for co-op shenanigans. Will there be signups for that, or do you already have your bros and sisters lined up?

Welp, I've asked a bunch of people to join me but I would definitely not be averse to some more people down the line. I'm probably not going to do an open signups thing because that could get really clusterfucky and awkward. Instead, I'm just going to exercise LPer fiat and just ask people I think would be fun co-commentators.

That said, feel free to hit me up on steam and we can play some off camera - I'm always down for more SR3.

Now, as for thread participation, how about we talk about crap that you guys would like to see on camera? Neat little secrets and out of the way crazy poo poo that you like to do to blow off steam in Steelport? Name it, and I will make it happen.

CORNPARTY CORNPARTY CORNPARTY CORNPARTY CORNPARTY CORNPARTY

As much as enjoyed playing Saints Row: The Third, there's a lot about the story that really rubbed me the wrong way but for now let's just start with what we've got.

Gat's death.

It's just so poorly handled! Honestly for the first couple hours of me playing it was my understanding that I was trying to rescue Johnny but it just never happened. I figured Loren was just lying to us that Gat was dead and that it was up to us to save him but it just never happened. Nope, he's dead For Real. Seriously? For a man like Johnny Gat, that was a terribly underwhelming death. Sure, he's a male Mary Sue. Whatever. He's a lot of people's favorite character and whenever he's around he generally steals the show so how come his death was just glossed over like that? Killed off-screen without so much as a goodbye or anything-- just some gunfire over an intercom and that's the last time we ever see him. They just leave it too unclear. Nobody ever really mentions it.

I get Daniel Dae-Kim was probably super busy at the time but come on.

EDIT: The man's been run through by a katana for Christ's sake!

It somehow never clicked for me that Male Voice 1 was Troy Baker, I must have gotten him confused with Nolan North. Now I'm tempted to play again and make a Snow or Yuri Lowell character...what have you done to me Skippy?

That said, I really enjoy this game co-op. Me and a friend played through the whole game as an purple and yellow alien married couple, sharing our people's culture with the earthlings. The character customization in this game really leads to some moments, I love it.

The progression of absurdity of the Saints Row games goes from mild to balls to the wall and it's great. Volition knows knows what you want and that's fun, satisfying, MURDEROUS gameplay. I mean, as shown in the first video they give you a loving predator missile within the first half hour of the game. Though I have to say my favorite parts of the games is when the characters sing along to the radio.

Right before this LP I watched the Spec Ops: The Line one, and I still thought Male 1 was Nolan North, it's an uncanny resemblance.

The sandcastle test post reminded me to finish this game up. I did, and it was great.

Skippy, this game's storyline can be a bit disjointed if you play missions in any random order. I played them in the order recommended in this thread, and it definitely helped the story flow better and make more sense. You might want to use that one for the sake of the thread.

Oh man, I am so excited for this LP. This is the only game I've ever beaten three times, and I'm currently on another so I can't wait to play along with this. Probably the most fun game I've ever played, but I agree with the story being somewhat lame and not written very well.

As much as I loved this game, it was a bit underwhelming for me. I never played the first game (I watched the LP of it on here). But it did push me to buy SR2 back in the day and I fell in love with it. The second game set the standards a bit too high for this one.

I think it's that activities that bothered me the most. Most are copied and pasted from the first two, and the ones they added were something we've seen earlier in the series with a cheap gimmick, or just terrible (Guardian Angel).

Bitching aside, I'm still excited for this LP.

Not really. She just goes from 'easy-going stoner who gets around' to 'generic angry action girl with a stick up her rear end' with no explanation. I could understand if it was a change after the intro, but no, she's just kinda like that. There's a character later on who's more like classic Shaundi, but that's not for a while.
