Just want to update that I sent an e-mail to Soldak support from the e-mail address I bought the game with and got a steam key directly from Steve Peeler within 20 minutes.

I know you read this thread since you post when there's an update, so thanks Steve! Also, whenever you get the expansion out on steam I'll totally buy it. If it gets into greenlight then post here so we can vote for it.

Had the same experience today and he helped me get my copy of Din's Curse on Steam - thanks man! Ditto here buying the DO expansion when it hits Steam.

It'll be added at some point, I'm sure. Demon War (the expansion for Din's Curse) was added to Steam a while after Din's.

I'm still waiting for that to go on sale somewhere, so I can buy it in bulk for me and my friends.

Yep. You download and install the expansion in Steam\steamapps\common\Drox Operative\ then verify the game cache so Steam redownloads the original EXE. It should ask you for the expansion key once you start the game. Works 100% as far as I can tell.

I've logged 24 hours so far. So much for my backlog.

What I like about this is how the way each sector plays out is different each time and how fluidly the situation moves. There have been multiple times now where I set out to do one victory condition but ended up having to do something completely different to win, and that's what's kept me interested.

Are there some good agreed-upon rules of thumb to follow for this game that would be good to know for newer players such as myself? There isn't too much information out there and I just don't want to stunt my ship's growth because I misallocated some points early on.

So far, I've just been hoarding my crew points d2-style and putting them into stats when I need them to equip certain gear. I also noticed each race has two stats that they get bonuses from, but I'm not sure if that's a reliable indicator for stats that I want to focus on or not.

Oh well, cool game so far!

On the one hand, you get extra bonuses from those stats. On the other hand, you're going to have a huge pile of crewmen boosting those stats, so with the possible exception of Tactical you don't really need to dump more points in unless you're going for a specialized build.

Command, uniquely, doesn't enable new types of equipment, but it expands the size of your ship, thus slowing it down but giving it more equipment slots. Don't dump points into it TOO much faster than Helm or else you'll be driving very, very slowly, but it's probably the single most important thing to level up early on. That first extra slot of each color is a godsend.

My rule of thumb for command: If I have 200 thrust (the maximum) and acceptable defense, I put a lot of my points into command.

Also, the other early advice I can give is to choose between shields and armor. I've had a lot more luck with armor; shields take a lot of time to recharge.

Here's a great help site: http://www.stephenhornback.com/id94.html

I've been using that as a reference for stuff I missed in the opening help messages and it's a nice all-around reference.

For the Command/speed stuff - there was a thread on the Soldak forums that said the actual formula to maintain 200 speed is to have your thrust be more than twice your ship's weight, and that every ship apparently has 50 thrust built in. For example, my current ship weighs 110, and I have thrust of 220 in my parts plus the built in 50 for a total of 270 thrust, so my ship cruises at 200 (270 thrust > 220 weight). According to the command level-up screen, the next ship weighs 130, so I can upgrade to that without adding more thrust (my thrust 270 > 260), but likely the upgrade after that I'll have to add more thrust to stay at 200 speed.

There isn't a whole lot of specific ship build info - it looks like unlike other ARPGs, there aren't basic "builds" or guides to follow. On the one hand, I kind of like that - there are a lot of ARPGs where you feel like unless you're following someone's specific build, you suck - but the basic guidelines I've seen looking over the Soldak forums include:

1) Tactical is always a good thing to upgrade.
2) Upgrade Command ASAP as long as you can maintain the thrust upgrades to support it without being slowed down.
3) You need shields and armor plating - unless you're choosing a race with high Structural, though, people seem to say using crew to get that up is preferable to dumping points in it (I'm level 21 and still not using plating, and there are starting to be more and more situations where I'm getting one-shotted once my shields drop, so I'm probably going to have to add that soon).
4) If you're using any weapon that aims automatically (beams), you need Computers to get your hit average up.
5) You don't need a ton of weapons - there are people on the Soldak forums cruising around at level 100 with just two weapons crushing poo poo. There seem to be people who prefer either auto-aiming weapons like beams, and manual aim weapons, like the ram accelerators and railguns, and you build your stats around that.
6) There's a lot of complicated min-maxing possible with leveling up crew, but I'm early enough into this that I can't be bothered with it now. But basically, if there is a stat or two you choose to not dump points into, use crew to bring those stats up, not the ones your race starts with a bonus in.

Once I finish my current sector, I think I'm going to screw around in it for a while to redo my loadout. I'm starting to hit a point where fighting named race ships is a slog and I need the energy boost powerups to get anything done.

Man, the game starts to get intense later on. I started in a small level 20 sector with the Humans, Shadow and Utopians in close proximity at each other's throats, and each race had a ton of "destroy the boss" quests. There were nearly 10 bosses flying around in that system alone, and the first 15 minutes were pretty crazy :black101:

Check a couple of posts up, there's a link and some info you might want to look at.

Got my diplomatic win achievement tonight. Started near Humans so I did their stuff, rolled over the Legion and Overlords, eventually found the Scavengers and Brunt. Both Humans and Scavengers wanted the Brunt dead. I then spent the next hour getting allied with the Scavengers and then blowing a ton of money on rumors to get the Humans/Scavs to buddy up. It was funny because I thought they were doing well - I ferried some diplomats for them, they did some other exchanging - then they both start giving quests saying "steal tech from the other guy" and contacting me with "break your treaty with them for X money." Finally had to go hardcore on the rumors to get them to chill out.

I really like what the DLC adds; the base game tends to get a little boring once you find all the races and figure out what's going on. I set Drox involvement to be a little higher and that's been fun.

Started a new game in a small sector with three races; the Drox wanted me to protect the Shadow and get the Shadow and Cortex to fight as bonuses. I start out near the Cortex and start exploring nearby systems, start to realize the Shadow aren't anywhere near here. Thought I was being clever by playing "phone tag" and buying comms from a third race from the Cortex, and those guys had the Shadow's channel. I figure out where they are on the map and see the system they're in is nearby the one I'm in, slightly above and to the right. However, when I explore the northeastern part of my current system, there are no starlanes or wormholes. It turns out the sector is shaped like < with the Cortex at the bottom and the Shadow at the top, so I had to run through a couple of higher-level systems to get to them and nearly die. I get there and they have one planet with one bar of health (a radiation leak and riots going on), one ship, and no money, so I can't repair my poo poo. That was a tense half hour of fighting mobs and getting money, and the third race (who also had one planet nearby) decide they're going to fight the Shadow. I wade in with no shields, no armor and a handful of health and shield regens and somehow manage to beat them; I eventually got powerful enough to go back to the beginning sector and wipe out the Cortex.

You're an independent agent living in a game like Master of Orion (think Space Civilization, if you don't know it).

The AI plays entire races. It's in charge of running empires, colonizing planets, declaring war, and all that. You're just a Space Badass, and your job is to do whatever you want while being whatever sort of Space Badass you want to be.

When you load up, you're only playing one round. Your ship/character (they're kinda one in the same) survives beyond that round to fight again. When you create a galaxy, you're starting a new round. Make your first one Tiny; that's still more than big enough to play in. Within a round, there are 5 ways to win, and a few matching ways to lose. 2 of them depend on diplomacy with the other races:

Military: All of the races but one have been wiped out, and you're allied with the remaining race. You can do this actively, by declaring war, blowing up ships and planets, or passively, by kissing lots of rear end while pitting races against each other. A combination of the two works best. (If all races but one get wiped out, and aren't allied with that race, you'll lose.) One of the easier ways to win.

Diplomatic: Make everyone like each other. Get all remaining races allied, by spreading good rumors and lots of bribes. And occasionally wiping out the one jerk who won't get along with the rest of the team. (If you're at war with all the races, you'll lose.)

Two of the ways to win come mostly from quests, and are pretty darn hard.:

Economic: Make enough money for your bosses, and you'll win. They earn a bonus whenever you solve quests or sell things on the diplomacy screen. They do not make money when you sell ship parts to a planet. They lose money every time you die. (Die too much, and they'll be in the red, and pull you out.)

Legend: Do lots of quests where you're the good guy. Legend points show up in the reward screen of quests, when you do nice things that involve saving planets from disaster, stopping rebellions, or rescuing ships. There's no way to lose via legend points.

The last way is probably one of the simplest ways to win:

Fear: Kill lots of bounties, blow up lots of different races' ships and planets, and generally be a Space Badass. Don't die, and don't help too many people. There's no way to lose via fear points.

After a while in a round, check diplomacy and your win screen and figure out which type of victory you want to go for. As far as equipping and upgrading your ship, just make sure you have the biggest power plant and thrusters you can find. As a backup weapon, mines are really really good: if you're in trouble, run away and start dropping mines. Your pursuers generally aren't fast/smart enough to dodge. Scroll back a page for more detail on building a ship.

So I'm suffering from choice paralysis at chargen: I really want to make a Utopian guy, mainly on the strength of their ships looking awesome. The thing is, I'm having trouble justifying it to myself, as picking a race whose damage bonus comes from Computers seems like a bad idea when I could take Drakk and get damage and defensive bonuses from tactical and helm, which I know I need to have high, or just say screw it, go Brunt, and have hilariously over-effective tactical slots.

So as the game progresses would putting the points into Computer pay off, or should I just pick a combat-oriented race and consolidate all of my points into helm, engineering, and tactical?

If you're used to the idea of getting damage bonuses from tactical then you're used to the idea of tactical unlocking your best dps weapons.

The thing is, you can find viruses that do decent dps as well, if you're going for computers.
