What is this mess?
Ape Escape is simply, a game about catching apes. Granted the apes that are smart due experimental helmets gone horribly right. And they're messing with the time stream or something. So it's Spike's job to set things right by catching the monk- er, apes, correcting the time stream, and putting Specter, their leader, back in his cage at the zoo.

Seems silly.
Oh, it is. But this game doesn't take itself very seriously and neither should you.
I mean, look at the ape on the cover in the lower right corner with the SMG. Think about it: monkeys with guns...and Kamina shades.

So, how is you going to play this game?
Informatively, with bits of humor here and there. I'll be playing 1 level set per video. When we get to the point of having to backtrack to get monkeys, if it's short enough, I'll smash it into the level set; if not, backtracking gets its own video.

I'll also try to beat this game 100%: all collectables, monkeys, and other things of that nature.

Anything else important we should know?
Oh yeah, this game was the first one to REQUIRE the Dual Shock controller. In fact, if you start this game without one attached, the game will freeze on the beginning screen stating you need the Dual-Shock controller to play. At least, that's how I remember it.

Episodes:

Episode 1: Monkey Business
Episode 2: Mysterious Ape-sense

Episode 6, Part 1: Hail to the Chimp
Episode 6, Part 2: Crappy VA's Drive Me Bananas!

Ah, Ape Escape. I have very fond memories of this game. Your LP looks good, and I'm looking forward to seeing more. Those later levels get pretty difficult. If you don't have patience, they'll drive you bananas.

Yesterday I was a carnival prize. Today I run the whole damn show.

I'm pretty sure you could start the game without one. I remember playing the demo with my regular controller and just loving around with whatever the buttons did, wishing I could play it.

Yeah, I'm fiddling around with mike settings to see if I get a clearer recording; that or I could just put the mike closer to my mouth. (tests this) Yea, that actually works a bit better.

Haven't played the later games much, but yeah, this series is all around very chill. Technology permiting, I might let's play the rest of them too.

No promises, though.

Good poo poo, OP! I'm enjoying your videos very much since I never did get a chance to play this game when I was a kid, and it looks hell of fun. I've taken the liberty of coming up with a few monkey-related idioms, which I will list below. Feel free to use them in your videos!

code:

- Monkeyshines
- Monkey business
- Monkeying around
- Monkey see, monkey do
- "Well I'll be a monkey's uncle!"
- Throwing a monkey wrench in the works
- Having a monkey on your back
- "He sure made a monkey out of me." (maybe use this one when an enemy successfully attacks you)
- More fun than a barrel of monkeys
- Going ape
- Going bananas (this one was already used, to great effect, in the first post of this thread)
- Going ham (my friend tells me that some species of monkeys really like ham. Can anyone confirm this?)

That's all I can think of at the moment. I'll keep adding to the list as they come to me

Really? Have people tried to LP this game before and failed, or have attempts even made it out of the sandcastle? Random hard drive failures? Natural disasters? Lack of attention? What happened?

Anyways, I plan on pushing through this and getting done by New Years. Recording some the bonus stuff for the thread.

Not sure, honestly. I just know this is the furthest into the game I've ever seen.

How much do you have to spin the stick to use the Skyflyer? It's not like one rotation per rotation, is it?

I think there've been 2 abandoned Ape Escape LPs in subforum history. Lyrax was the last to attempt it but he didn't even make it out of the cenozoic era.

Hang on I'll test this really quick.

(1 hour of pre-recording gameplay later)

Okay I'm back. It's more like one stick rotation per two SkyFlyer rotations. See, I'm rotating my stick about four times per second, which equates about to eight SkyFlyer rotations, which equates to almost two seconds of flight. As soon as I stop rotating, I have about 1/2 a second of flight to work with before I drop like a stone. The way the SkyFlyer is programed, there is a minimum number of rotations needed to gain lift. Anything above that number is fine, while anything below that will give you a animation hinting that you need to rotate faster. Two per second is the minimum number of rotations needed.

That's interesting. Also I'm going to guess Cenozoic is the either the Mysterious Age or Oceania. Cause the Cenozoic era happens after the dinosaurs died off, right?

Hey guys what's up! Glad to see you guys are enjoying the thread. Had a little real life trouble, but nothing too major. Recording the most recent episodes took more time than it should have (due to dumb mistakes), but I should have the next two episodes out by tonight, internet willing.

Something I've noticed while playing, there is a distinct lack of variety of ape in this game. Where are the gorillas, the orangutans, the macaques?! Actually that last one was a type of monkey.

And yes, I'm well aware that I refer to these in-game apes as monkeys; it's for comedic effect.

It's alright Monkey Fracas, I like the thread like it is. It's got character.

Anyways...
I've got some bad news.

I'm putting this thread on a two-week hiatus.

Real life is happening too quickly for me to juggle an LP right now:
1. My Great-Aunt is fighting breast-cancer.
2. I was laid off four days ago.
3. I just found out that my little brother died today. My two-month old, barely had a chance to live, brother.

I never got a chance to see him, or hold him...or say stuff like, "Hey bro, welcome to the world. It's a big old scary world out there, but don't worry, your big bro's got your back."

A future unlived. Vast potential wasted. Taken before he had a chance to give.

I'm still mad at the world right now. It's not okay, but I'll get over it.

Eventually.

Hold on to your loved ones: at least you'll have the chance that I didn't.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year...

Guys, something amazing just happened to me.

I didn't believe miracles could happen in real life, but I was proven wrong yesterday.

My brother is still alive. (cue every video game victory theme ever!!)

Holy poo poo, you guys have no idea just how happy this makes me.

Apparently, my brother was and currently is still in the hospital (he was born prematurely). The doctors were doing...something or other, I don't quite know yet, and were on the verge of losing him. Doctor told my parents they didn't expect him to live through the night. My dad calls me, and through his own voice breaking, and cell phone signal fuckery, his original message of "We might have to let your little brother go." got garbled to "We had to... let .. brother go." Needless to say, when I asked him to clarify, I couldn't hear him. Thus leading me to believe my brother was dead for about 20 hours.

After running on safe-mode for most of the day, taking care of random business, I come home to the unbelievable news that my brother was still alive.

And that was my day in a nutshell.

The two-week hiatus is still in effect, but instead of mourning the loss of my brother, I'm going home to see him!!

This has simultaneously been the worst and best Christmas gift I've ever gotten.

Cheers, guys.

Well, the game is Saru Getchu, with saru meaning monkey. Though, why the monkeys don't have tails,

Technically those (those 3 specifically) are in the Japan-exclusive Million Monkey. They're Pipotron, robot-monkeys, and are pretty bizarre-looking. The anime also has them and the Pipotron Trio from the Pumped and Primed. In Ape Escape 2 and 3, the apes are in costumes if that helps

Hey guys, what's up!

For those of you who offered condolences, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I can say without exaggeration, that those 20 hours I thought my brother was dead were the worst of my life so far.

But I got good news now:
1. I'm employed again with a slightly easier schedule to keep, starting next Monday.
2. My brother is still alive and doing okay (okay as a baby in NICU can be...)
3. My Great-Aunt still has breast cancer, but is doing much better now.

Anyways, I'm just figuring out the finer details of how I'm going to do the rest of this LP, so I should have some more episodes in a couple of days. So hang tight!
