I'm glad I ended up picking Enlightened, my town is entirely Resistance dominated and they have 11 portals within *easy* walking distance of my house. I'm already working on the perfect route to hit them all. Also, after my first hacking walk, I looked on the map and discovered an unclaimed portal at a library branch a few miles off. Jumped in the car and captured that beast--it was actually surprisingly exciting to run off to this little building in the middle of a park before some other weird Internet person could show up  Looking forward to tomorrow, there are two unclaimed portals near work.

Yeah, I am surrounded by a TON of level 4 and 5 portals, and while my friends are dying to get in, all I end up doing is recharging them over and over and over Doesn't seem to be much you can do as a solo player so far.

I dunno, now that I've hit them each 4X/day for a week, I keep getting 'your hack produced no items' or whatever that error is. Its not really motivating me to keep going! BUT I SHALL. My gf thinks I'm insane to randomly drive out of my way to hack a new portal. I have quite the key collection.

Find portals that the owner is neglecting and blast it. Rinse, repeat. L1 is a slog, I know, but doing that got me out of L1 pretty quick with some leg work.

Level 2 player here who is about ready to quit this game. Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong. I stop by a L1 enemy portal on my way into work this morning. I hack it and get nothing but a key. I fire a XMP at it, and the resonator furthest away from me takes 30% damage while the nearest ones take 1%. Repeat this two more times, and the furthest resonator is destroyed while the others barely flinched. I am now apparently out of bursters. I stop by another enemy portal close by, it's an L3 or L4 portal and hacking it nets me some stuff that I can't even use. How exactly are you supposed to get anywhere in this game? It seemed easier as a level 1 but then again the threshold to level up was so low it didn't take a whole lot.

I've been in the beta since November 29 and I'm one of the higher level players in my area (level 6). The game's become a lot more fun now that I can use L6 XMP's and can decimate entire city blocks at a time  The progression from 1 to 4 was extremely rapid and happened over the span of only a few days. Hell, I think I even hit level 2 in the same day I installed the game. The absolute fastest way to level is setting up links and control fields. Having a really dense area with portals (zip code 75201 is my stomping ground) really helps with this, and even more if high level players show up and regularly level the area since they gain AP from destroying the fields. kitten smoothie: Attacking has been tweaked and as far as I can tell, you now do the most damage if you position yourself on the opposite side of the resonator you want to destroy (ie: resonator is west, stand to the east), and it even helps if you have portal in between you and the resonator. I don't the basis for tweaking the damage, but that's how it works now. A ton of fresh portals just showed up last night by the way. Hunt those down on your intel map! That's the easiest way to find opportunities for easy AP. Keep a watchful eye over that and your faction chat; those tools are there to help you!

Every single portal near me is either enemy and full level 4/5/6, or its in my faction, the same level, and is maxed out on links. I have no idea how this game will survive once it is out of beta.

I think all of the students at GATech have blanketed everything within an hour or two drive. They're also the ones that run most of the meetups and such, and since I am 35, I'm the old fart playing a kids game I guess. I guess I just feel a little creepy stalking 18yr old college kids on G+, is all.

This game isn't meant to be played purely solo, so you're going to have to do some work if you want to level up. Just hacking portals is not going to get you anywhere. Join your Factions and State/Area's Community on Google+. Shout at Faction members in the game, use the faction channel if you want to keep it "private." Once you make some friends, ask them to drop off keys for you, help them make links to things they dont want to have to drive an hour+ to. While they are at it, ask them to drop off some Lvl2+ resonators and XMP bursters for you. Arrange a meetup. You will have to do a little work, but once you get going this game can be a lot of fun. Don't be worried about being the "old guy playing the kids game." The group here has dudes who are 50+. Kids will probably respect you for playing, and maybe even help you "feel more like a kid." Kitten Smoothie (not air-) I'm gonna stage a guess and say that the reason you could take down 1 resonator and not the others is that 1 resonator was a lvl 1 resonator, so you could do damage to it with your lvl 1 or 2 XMP Burster. The rest of those resonators are probably lvl 2+ which would render your weapon ineffectual. Edit: sorry air- Should have reread before posting. Just did my first walk around Union Square, NYC. I made three or four triangle things, blew up a couple resonators, and hacked the poo poo out of some nodes. My first hour and I'm 14 AP away from level 3. NYC makes for a pretty easy training ground.

What's the connection with where you stand to where a resonator is deployed? I found that all the resonators I deployed yesterday ended up right on top of the portal no matter where I stood.

Thanks for the codes! I thought I had read at one point about standing further/closer to the portal to deploy resonators closer/further from the portal? They will always deploy to spots other than where you stand (E/NE/N/NW etc) but I'd like to make sure they deploy in the widest radius possible.

Multi hacking is a real problem in my town and that's how there are L8 players that have hundreds of high level weapons, so they just run around on sprees all the time taking out our farm. I admit that I've had to do it myself to stay in the game. I think the fairest thing to would be a combination of limiting what you can carry plus a complete reset of everyone's inventory.

I can't find it now but I saw a post on G+ where a guy was asking about that. The theory was that there was a server side update that either broke portal keys or they've been turned off/limited for the moment because of "cheaters". Nothing official, just some people on G+ speculating.
