FALL THREAD

Well, Winter, the holding pattern-iest of the seasons. A lot of Fall-season shows are still going. Spring is right around the corner with all kinds of surprises. For now we remain in the frozen embrace of Winter's lineup. Certainly doesn't help that we're still reeling from last year's Spring of Lots of Things.

As usual, the primary source for these dates and titles is Moonphase. This list will contain all of what Moonphase lists for TV series, with some of the OVAs and movies as well. It is worth noting that, like always, Moonphase lists cinema dates for anime films, not BD/DVD release dates, so said dates will be largely useless to you unless you live in Japan.

I have bolded series that I think will be definite must-watches or sure bets. This is merely my predictions / personal taste, and it is by no means necessarily accurate one way or the other. If you have an issue with my selection, well... tough. Italicized series are ones that absolutely no one will give a poo poo about even in the slightest (ultra kids shows, merchandise gimmicks).

For television series, the date listed is the day the first episode airs in Japan. For reasons related to timezones and Japan's screwy way of counting hours past midnight, this might be +/- 1 day from what you'd expect it to be. For OVA's, it's the DVD release date. For movies, it's the cinema premiere date, unless otherwise noted.

Shows with ADTRW threads have a "" next to the thread link below them. These shows are not necessarily must-watch, but they are at least at such a level that someone in ADTRW felt a desire to make a thread about them.

Winter TV Series

12/09 Tantei Opera Milky Holmes Alternative Two ~Opera Kobayashi and the Raven of the Void~
Young anime girl Sherlock Holmes will apparently never die.

12/22 My Little Sister is an Osaka Girl (Boku no Imouto wa "Osaka Okan")
A boy seperated from his sister is reunited with her to find out that she's now an energetic tsundere girl with an Osaka accent/personality!! How is this not a joke.

12/24 Saki: Achiga-hen episode of side-A : Episode 13
Young anime girl mahjong will apparently never die.

12/25 INFERNO COP
Studio Trigger (full of former Gainax staff, namely dudes from Panty & Stocking) make a webseries. Really cheaply but who CARES. Here's episode 1.

12/31 Nekomotogatari: Kuro
SHAFT doing yet another one of the monogatari series which are kind of creepy but a lot of people like them so whatever. All the staff and cast are back.

01/01 Puchimas! Petite Idolm@ster
Idolmaster is reimagined as in chibi form. Great.

01/02 Yama no Susume
A girl with acrophobia and her friend, who loves mountains, decide to climb a mountain. Evidently that's all there is to this.

01/02 MANGIRL
Japan I don't think that's what you are intending to go for there in that title. Four girls without any manga editing experience start their own manga magazine.

01/03 Ai Mai Mi
4-koma anime adaptation by ?. A school club of wacky young anime girls draw manga and get into antics. jokes.

01/04 Cuticle Detective Inaba
Manga to anime adaptation by Zexcs. A private detective named Inaba, an artificial-being created by splicing wolf and human DNA solves crimes by smelling / eating hair. His archenemy is a goat mafia boss who wants to eat the world's money.

01/04 Maoyuu Maou Yuusha
Novel -> Manga -> Another Manga -> Another Anime Manga -> Anime adaptation, being produced by ARMS and directed by Takeo Takahashi (Spice & Wolf). A hero goes to kill the demon queen, comes to realize the demon queen is getting a bad rap and that demon-human socioeconomic dynamics are a bit more complex than "good and evil", and joins up with the demon queen. It's rather like Spice & Wolf. However: studio isn’t known for its quality. Tentatively bolding at the moment.

01/05 Da Capo III
Really trite harem anime adaptations will apparently never die.

01/05 Ore no Kanojo to Osananajimi ga Shuraba Sugiru
Light-Novel -> Anime, A-1 Pictures, directed by Keiichirou Kawaguchi (Moetan, Hayate, Zettai Karen Children) A kid whose parents divorced decides to shun romance, until he meets a ~ pretty girl with silver hair ~, harem antics involving a childhood friend follow.

01/05 Minami-ke Tadaima
How many Minami-ke anime are they going to make I mean really dang.

01/05 AKB0048 Next Stage
Studio: Satelight. That anime about young anime girl idols fighting a regime of oppression by making songs and inspiring rebels or whatever continues. The irony also continues to be missed.

01/05 Hakkenden: Touhou Hakken Ibun
Studio Deen manga-to-anime directed by Mitsue Yamazaki (not all that much!). Here's the plot as far I can tell: a village dies from a plague, three kids survive, now living alone in a church. One of them possess the Murasame, the sword of life. The "Imperial Church" wants the sword.

01/06 Senran Kagura
Being producted by Artland, and directed by Takashi Watanabe (Ikkitousen, Freezing, Slayers, Shakugan no Shana). A young of young anime girls with huge tits go to ninja school and get into your typical action+tits fanservice anime plot.

01/06 Love Live! School Idol Project
"We got these Idols, lets make them into anime high schoolers, people will just throw money at us". And then they did.

01/06 Ishida and Asakura
Comedy gag anime about two high schoolers.

01/07 Amnesia
Otome game adaptation by Brains Base, directory by Yoshimitsu Ohashi (Sacred Seven, Witchblade). An girl wakes up amnesiac, meets a cast of stunning young men who pursue her. Like always.

01/07 Line Offline Salaryman
A really bad looking flash anime about salarymen.

01/07 Zettai Karen Children: The Unlimited
Spin-off about the antagonist of the really long ongoing shounen series about pre-teen esper girls.

01/07 Bakumatsu Gijinden Roman
Being produced by TMS Entertainment and Monkey Punch, and directed by Hirofumi Ogura (some Inuyasha movie, a bunch of episodes of Gintama, Kuroshitsuji II). Monkey Punch rewrites the made up Pachinko character "Roman"; in this version, Roman not only wields a secret identity but also an anime. It's literally an anime adaptation of a Monkey Punch made historical Pachinko game.

01/08 Senyuu.
Studio: Ordet (Black*Rock Shooter, Fractale, Kannagi). Director: Yutaka Yamamoto (same). Fantasy comedy. Satan Archimedes (no, really) returns to the earth after being sealed for a thousand years by a hero. "The King" tries to seal Satan by dispatching descendants of the hero to defeat him, but because that's a pain instead chooses 75 hero-like people. The protagonist is #45 of that 75. It looks like minimalist animation shounen. Theme by JAM Project.

01/08 Hell Kindergarten (Jigoku Youchien)
Web-flash shorts produced by Kasugasoft. Sort of a weird project in general: the designs were crowdsourced, and it's going to end up in multiple magazines Kadokawa holds. Oh, it's about a bunch of demon toddlers.

10/09 Tamako Market
K-ON! with cooking instead of music.

01/09 Good Job Club
Wacky school club antics!!!

01/09 GDGD Fairy
the gently caress is this

01/10 Sasami-san@Ganbaranai
Light novel adaptation by SHAFT, directed by Shinbo. I am going to just list what is apparently the principal cast: a first-year highschool student who is a Hikikomori. Her brother who is a teacher at her school and has an "intense love" for her. Another teacher at his school who looks like a little girl and plays porn games in the staff room. Her nine-year old sister who looks like an adult woman. Try to compute who is involved in this romantic comedy!!

01/10 Vividred Operation
A-1 Pictures, directed by Kazuhiro Takamura (Strike Witches). A future where pants are illegal.

01/10 Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai NEXT
Mediocre harem / school club anime will apparently never die.

01/10 Kotoura-san
4-koma adaptation by AIC, directed by Masahiko Oota (Minami-ke, Yuru Yuri). A girl with psychic powers goes to a new school, meets friends who don't mind that she can read minds.

01/11 Mondaiji-tachi ga Isekai kara Kuru Sou Desu yo?
Studio: flying DOG, Directory Yatsutaka Yamamoto (Squid Girl). Three psychics bored of their normal life are drawn into a magical world by "The Black Rabbit" (an anime rabbit girl) to save the community "No Name" from the "Devil King". Yet another light novel adaptation.

01/11 Chihayafuru 2
The highly popular Madhouse karuta / romance shoujo anime adaptation continues. You should check out the first season, it was very well done and extremely well received.

01/13 BEAST SAGA
Ok, this is the weirdest looking shounen toy thing I've ever seen, design-wise.

01/13 Cardfight Vanguard
Cardfighting, cardfighting never changes.

01/17 Lululolo Tiny Twin Bears

01/25 Hetalia The Beautiful World
A sequel to the anime adaptation of the webcomic series portraying the Axis powers / Allies as people, who get into antics. Fans like to imagine them loving each other.

02/03 Yet More Precure

.......................

Winter Movies/OVAs
Listing them all together since it won't matter when they're actually out really

The follow things will be getting movies in the first few months: Hunter x Hunter, Star Driver, Berserk, A Certain Magical Index, Hanasaku Iroha, Precure, Dragon Ball Z, Detective Conan, Saint Young Men

Jack poo poo of the OVAs have set dates so whatever.

.......................

EARLY SPRING LOOK AHEAD BONUS

As a bonus since this season is short, here's things coming out later in 2013:

The romantic comedy of my youth is as bad as I expected (Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru.)
Romcom about an antisocial high school student who is forced by his teacher to join the volunteer service club where the ~ school's prettiest girl~ is in.

Devil Survivor 2: The Animation
Being adapted by the dude who did the Persona 4 adaptation, which was actually pretty good.

Shingeki no Kyojin: The Animation

??? Dangan Ronpa Anime ???

.......................

Glossary of useful terms etc

AT-X: Subscription-based satellite TV channel airing mostly anime. Because of its obscure nature it's (in)famous for airing uncensored versions of various fanservice anime that has naughty parts removed on normal terrestrial free-to-air television.

BONES: Animation studio. Made a bunch of good shows, has been less than successful lately (kinda sucks now)

Gonzo clause: Rule of thumb that says that any anime animated by studio Gonzo will suck poo poo. Quite accurate in general, and no longer irrelevant since Gonzo magically lives again now.

JC Staff: Animation studio, usually considered to do above average quality work. Mostly known for their endless stream of romantic comedies with at least one tsundere character voiced by Kugimiya Rie per show.

Josei: Literally means "woman", but in this context it means a watcher/reader demographic, mostly consisting of young adult women and girls in their late teens. Often totally interchangeable with seinen.

Noitamina: A late-night one-hour anime timeslot on Fuji TV, a Tokyo-based terrestrial channel. It was initially explicitly aimed at the josei demographic, but these days almost anything goes. It has a reputation for airing odd or experimental shows, as well as for above-average quality.

Production I.G.: Generally well-regarded animation studio, known for things like GitS:SAC, Patlabor and a bunch of Oshii Mamoru movies.

Seinen: Literally means "man", but in this context it means a watcher/reader demographic, mostly consisting of young adult men and boys in their late teens. Often totally interchangeable with josei.

SHAFT: Animation studio, mostly known for very low-budget but nevertheless visually interesting shows. See also Shinbou Akiyuki.

Shoujo: Literally means "girl", but in this context it refers to the demographic aimed primarily at teen girls.

Shounen: Literally means "boy", but in this context it refers to the demographic aimed primarily at teen boys.

Shinbou Akiyuki: A director that seems to be at least partially insane or permanently high. Usually works with SHAFT and has a number of gimmicks, many of which involve meta-jokes and the like.

Studio DEEN: Animation studio infamous for its lovely adaptions and even shittier animation. ANN entry

ufotable: Animation studio, best known for their habit of putting stop-motion clay figure animation in odd places, and for the Kara no Kyoukai movie series. Generally does high quality work these days. ANN entry

Wakamoto Norio: That guy with that awesome voice that everyone likes. ANN entry

Pretty much Chihayafuru, anything by KyoAni, the next monogatari, and that spiritual successor to Spice and Wolf. Nothing else interests me at this time.

Slim pickings for winter it seems, usually there's at least five good shows, but here's there's only one I know for sure that is good. KyoAni has a good track record but I don't really know ahead of time.

Not really a must-see, more of a must-see-if-it's-for-real. Apart from that, Chihayayfuru, and Maoyuu, at least I won't be spending all my free time watching anime. Shingeki no Kyoujin anime sounds great - I hope they keep the giants' weird proportions.

Does this become any less super creepy? I picked up the first volume of the manga, and I just couldn't continue after that. The main character just did things things that could have been completely avoidable if he used his brain for one second, and they were so incredibly creepy things that I was weird-ed out to the point where I just didn't want to continue. I know that's the manga's intention that the situation was hosed up, but it worked way too well.

That's funny, I usually disagree with most people here when I think "come on guys, there's like 30 shows this season, a few are bound to be decent, remain optimistic!" but not this time. It's just eh, I can't be bothered.

I guess I will follow Maou Maoyuu Yuusha, but I don't think I will watch it to the end because I can just read the manga instead, and I think I might follow Haganai too because I have terrible taste, but again, the manga has a better artstyle, flows better and is slightly less fanservice-y so...

Cuticle Detective Inaba and Senyuu sound mildly interesting too so I guess I will give them a 3 episodes test too.

I guess there will still be JoJo, right?

Sengoku Basara was awesome and it was based on a goddamn Dynasty Warriors clone. Hope springs eternal. I might watch Nekomonogatari just because I'm intrigued about a "TV show" that comes out all at once on one night, even tough that Nisio guy is a clownshoes and those monogatari anime are creepy in a way that goes above and beyond what most anime even are capable of.

Seems like the last few seasons have been pretty crappy. I seem to remember having several shows that I wanted to watch each season, but couldn't ever get around to watching. The last such show was Tiger & Bunny, which actually started almost two years ago.

Nope. After the second volume finishes (with what is one of my two favorite chapters of the series so far) it tones down it a bit as the story gets more serious, but then poo poo gets real and it goes right back to being as hell, and in less of a funny way but in more of a "oh god why" sort of way.

I think it does a way better job of capturing the mood of being in middle school (especially in the first five or so chapters) than anything else out there. Other stuff (Chuu2 is the standout worst recent example) tends to soften too many blows and subtly glorify dumb adolescent poo poo while being voyeuristic in its treatment of children. Flowers of Evil, on the other hand, mercilessly beats the hell out of dumb adolescent poo poo and makes every case of male gaze intentionally unsettling.

Anyway, it is a really fun manga. Hopefully the anime won't chicken out on anything for the TV broadcast.

Well to be fair, the main problem was the main school being kind of boring and the fact that the first half of the series was really rushed and had pretty much no mahjong so they could get to nationals. The new episodes should (hopefully) be 100% nationals matches though, and the other teams are typically more interesting than the main characters in the show anyway, so I'm looking forward to them. Plus it means not having to read the manga which has an uncomfortable amount of fanservice (not as much as the main manga, but still). The anime has an annoying amount left over, but I can watch without cringing at least, and enjoy the over-the-top superpowered mahjong.

Looking forward to another season of Minami-Ke, hopefully it'll be as close to season 1 as possible. Maoyuu could be fun if executed properly, so I'll definitely give it a shot. Beyond that there's a lot of 'eh' series that mostly give the impression of concepts that, while possibly good in the right hands, are probably being handled very badly indeed and will turn out to be terrible. Bonus points to Tamako Market, which sounds like a different anime each time new material is released (It's a light-hearted modern R&J! No, it's a love-triangle! Now the guy isn't even a MC or something and romance isn't the focus I guess???). At least spring is already looking promising.

It's not looking like a stellar season but honestly if you can name at least 3 shows you're excited for, I think that it looks decent at worst!

Though I view an entire year of anime being great if there's 5 shows I liked, so it's entirely possible my perspective is funky.

I POSSESS QUESTIONABLE TASTE IN TOUHOU GAMES

So Maoyuu Maho Yuusha is the only sure thing that isn't a continuation? Feels like post-Oscar film doldrums, but with more bland girls doing bland things.

Pretty much. It's a terrible season, bit at least fall was good.
