There is a series of cooking videos out there on Youtube that stars this guy whose apartment is a complete and utter garbage dump and at one point he manages to catch his stove on fire while trying to cook a hotdog or something similar. Do any of you know what I'm talking about?

I feel like I might be mis-remembering this, but I swear I watched one of these Masaokis videos where he goes into his terrible apartment's basement, and shows the ramshackle "repairs" he's made, which include a bag of cement poured onto a leaky pipe and random milk crates and blocks of wood holding up the rotting floor under his awful bathroom. Am I making this up? I haven't been able to find this episode again.

I find these videos enchanting. One of our SA users was his documentarian (Parthenocarpy). He had great difficulty getting a hold of him to find out if things were better for him, which I think he did confirm.

His health has kind of declined, he has some problem with the cerebellum or something that makes him lose his balance pretty easily. But he's been drinking less, it seems like.

I tried to figure out exactly why I find these so entertaining. It seems like it should feel cruel, because who's entertained by someone else's mishaps? But I'm not laughing. I laugh sometimes but most of the time I'm just shocked and confused. It's like I'm just standing in awe of his thoroughly alien perspective on ordinary household tasks.

I think it's because he's so charming and unintentionally witty throughout. If it was some guy with a dull monotone who didn't understand the concept of humor, it would still be interesting but much less so. I knew someone in college who probably had a similar mental disorder (Masaokis has said that he was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder or something like that), and he was much the same, in a less extreme way: a continually colorful way of describing things, noticeable paranoia, an anthropomorphic/semi-spiritual approach to everything - Masaokis worries every winter that the trees will never regrow their leaves, this guy thought the world might literally end once when he was extremely depressed - and a bizarre blend of intelligence and pure incompetence. And like him, he was charming in his way and very popular despite his craziness.

I archived the videos, and am happy to answer any questions about the series. GWS had a thread about it once, everyone there hated the videos and the thread died. GBS had two long threads dedicated to it that you can find easily with an archives account. Pretty much anything else you'd want to know I've already covered in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkxIkWDy2UM and I find it funny to look back and see the "hot goon spotted" comments; I'm 30bs lighter in that video than I am today
