That is some surreal poo poo going on in that game. With the amount of deaths and types of bullshit offscreen surprises it also reminds me a lot of dongs.exe or one of those types of bullshit sadism games. Better LP than I was expecting based on the OP though, not bad. Will be interesting to see more of this kind of god awful poo poo.

e: Wow, also just staring at the checkered background as you move around is super loving disorienting and makes my eyes hurt. This is a good game.

e2: I was confused as gently caress wondering what system this was for, since it's obviously NES but sonic wasn't 8 bit, so I read the wiki and apparently it's a sonic port for the NES? That kinda boggles my mind. I've heard of this kind of bootleg poo poo before, so that's not surprising to me, but I thought all they usually did was change a couple sprites and the title screen around and essentially have the same game. The fact that they somehow ported a 16 bit game down to an 8 bit system seems.. needlessly complex for this kind of illegal bootleg garbage? I dunno, maybe it's a super easy process as I know literally nothing about that kind of thing, but it just seems like porting a Sega game to a NES takes way more effort than it would to just stick some crappy sonic sprites in mario, or vice versa.

As the above poster said, this is surreal as poo poo. Something this weird meshing two games that have very little in common, combined with insane difficulty and bullshit game design (purgatory pits), strikes me more of a cruel fan homage.

Megadrive opening cards, Master system graphics. 16 bit mario spin animation during jumps and a difficulty level to inspire Kaizo. Appropriate considering that this was one of the original rom hacks.

I've played this game (well, a ROM of it), and yes, it really is as hard to control as C Junctioner says it is. I think most of the times I've tried to play it have ended at or around the buzz bomber, and the ones that didn't ended a few seconds after that. I haven't even seen the death pits before.

(Yes, that's a self portrait)

Wow... that was... a thing, alright! Apart from the obvious video problems the game itself produces, not really seeing anything to critique here, and a little bit to like (not the game itself, obviously... but the editing's well put together, and you can tell this is a labour of love hate pure despair with a hint of rage).

I'm guessing either you're emulating it on something that can't save states, running it for reals, or are determined not to save state?

It doesn't help this game's difficulty that when you get hit only three rings at most come outta ya. I know in most Sonic games some percentage will disappear into the aether when you get hit, but all but three is pretty bonkers.

That was an appropriately depressing 8 bit remix of City Escape you found for that death montage. I'm impressed you hung in there for 3 hours to record that level. If I were playing it, I probably wouldn't have even kept going for 10 minutes. Looking forward to more suffering.

The game's running into sprite limits for the NES. Note the horrible attempt to render the first boss's ball and chain. I doubt they could've gotten anywhere near as many simultaneous, moving rings on screen as Sonic does.

Which makes sense, when you consider taking a 16 bit platformer and trying to shove it into an 8 bit system.

I love how you clip through the ring on the loop. The number of bullshit deaths reminds me of that awful Transformers NES game. One thing that always baffles me is the insistence of the developers of these pirated games to port them to systems that have nothing to do with the original game. Genesis game ported to NES? Not a problem!

It's amazing how much effort they put into making this game. I mean, they had to change graphics, make a level lay out, drink beer, make sure you couldn't just fall out of the level. And that beer is heavy!

Quality control alone must have been a headache.

To be fair to this game, the original Sonic did have several pits which were inescapable. The difference was that the devs realised that that could be a problem when combined with the ring collection mechanic and just made them instant death pits instead.

A lot of them are duplicates with different names. Sometimes they're even the same game, but separated out as 'different' games. Like each world in a Mario game is a separate 'game' on there. And tons of duplicates of each of them, some of them with the swimming flag set to 'on'. Here's a video of a Russian guy chronicling basically all the Russian 'Mario' games. Essentially 'official' games in the country, but mostly romhacks. The video even talks about the multi-game ones.

Let me answer that by saying I have no loving idea! Also, there is some really interesting info on the wiki about this game. Some choice bits:

wiki posted:

The game features a character named "Somari" - Nintendo mascot Mario wearing Miles "Tails" Prower's shoes.

This is hilarious to me and I sure didn't notice that detail at first.

wiki posted:

Somari's levels are based on the Mega Drive/Genesis version of the first Sonic game, with the exception of the Scrap Brain Zone (of which a semi-functional version is accessible if save state hacking is used), while the bonus stages are based on the Master System and Game Gear versions.

The game doesn't even know what the gently caress it's a port of, borrowing from a bunch of poo poo I guess.

wiki posted:

It is unknown precisely how, when, or where the game was created,[2] though Asia is likely, and Taiwan probable as a Taiwanese trademark for "Somari" was registered on March 1, 1994[11] following the earlier registry of the trademark "Sonimari" on February 1 of the same year.[12] Some cartridges bear the copyright notice "1994 Someri Team".

loving mind-boggling that they got a trademark for this and developed it, and sold it. I assumed that it was basically just a few computer literate guys back in the day who decided to mass produce a few lovely romhacks. The fact that they went through the trouble of registering a trademark for the name is so weird.

wiki posted:

At the time of its release, the game was relatively well received by critics.
...
Russian gaming magazine Great Drakon scored the game 4/10 (only 2/10 for sales volume) and commented in a review that at last 8-bit console gamers could roughly gain the experience of 16-bit gaming as with Sonic.
...
Modern reviewers have been more critical of the game, although reactions to Somari remain mixed. GamesRadar listed Somari on their list of "Crazy rear end rom hacks", calling it "Less mash-up and more train wreck" due to poor physics and unresponsive controls.[19] GameSpy, however, described the game as "a remarkably good port/hack of Sonic to the NES,"[2] and Atari HQ described it as "amazing[ly] original" with "more than adequate[]" level-porting.[8]

Gamespy knows where it's at. gently caress. I am so confused by everything right now.
