My uncle passed away this September and we finally found his last will and testament. He made some very poor choices in life but he also was an amazing uncle and would have fit in here nicely. He bought me my first air rifle and promptly laughed at me when I shot a bucket and the shot rebounded into my forehead. He took me fishing on his boat and never failed to laugh at me for getting spines stuck in me. He let me run around with guns on his ranch as a teenager and laughed at me for crying about almost shooting a few tresspassers camping behind a rusted old car we used for target practice in a river bed ("No blood no foul") while he was asleep on his couch. He spent every day of vacation in the Ennis area of Montana fly fishing before and after his divorce that unraveled his life. Even though he had a boat in the Santa Cruz area something about Ennis always brought him back. I went with him about 10 years ago and had a blast and always planned on going with him again but never did due to me starting a family or just being too busy. My mom found some instructions for specifically me to do for him if he passed away and a modest chunk of money to do it with. I'll be driving out to Ennis from the bay area in California at some point this coming year to spend a few days fishing and hopefully shooting some guns(or even hunting). It wont be the same without him but it is what he requested. So do any of you guys live out there want to meet up for a goon shoot? I'll be bringing out a small arsenal. I've only been there in October and the fishing was insane but I'm considering going earlier as long as the fishing is good. ![]() Rest in peace Tom. I'm sure you are laughing at me even more now.

I'm sorry about your uncle. If his dying wishes were you to fish and hunt where you did with him in the past, that is simply awesome.

He picked a wonderful spot to vacation, I got to spend a summer there at Indiana University's geology field camp in the mountains just to the northwest of Ennis. Took trips to the Ennis Lake a lot, even with its parasites or whatever bad the water had in it. If I was still up there I would join you in a heartbeat. Watch out for rattlesnakes!

My grandfather is about 50 miles north of there, when you figure out your plans toss me an email, sixgunstrumpet at gmale. I'll see if I can't manage to plan a visit for around the same time.

So.... what's this about Ennis lake parasites?

That's about a 10hr drive from where I live, I could probably take a day or two off of work depending on when this happens.

I live like 6 hours away, and I travel to Helena and Missoula a few times a year. I could bring guns and ammo, but I think I gave the last of my fly gear away to some poor dude with Project Healing Waters.

I would do this. Picked up my BRZ day before yesterday, that'll give me an excuse to pass through the Badlands and Rushmore on the way out.

That sucks; I'm very sorry to hear about your uncle. It sounds like Tom had great taste and outstanding personality. I live quite close. While I'd expect I would always be the figurative "turd in the punch-bowl", I can bring enough beer to make up for my lovely character. Then again, it would depend on the timing. Actually, I probably have no place in such an event. Regardless, I'd like to reiterate my sympathy and state that I hope you have a great time in Tom's honor.

I don't know how much snow anywhere is getting this year. I can still drive into the cabin at 8000ft. It's getting spooky. March can still be very much winter in that part of MT. Not much you can do about the weather, but from what I understand the fishing is pretty much never bad.

Historically is April or May not winter? Sorry about the questions this is easier than trudging through weather history websites.

We've had snow a few times this year in Wyoming, but haven't had poo poo for accumulation. We're at about the same altitude as Ennis, but further south obviously. I don't like to make any assumptions about snow between September and June. Of course the heartier fishermen don't give a gently caress.

Oh look its the first of the month again. Bumping this to say I still plan on going in Mid-May for anyone in or near the area. Looks like I will be spending at least one day in Bozeman also.

So this is what you were talking about. Sorry to hear about your uncle. I probably can't make it in May but it sounds like a good time for sure. If I were still in the bay area and could drive I would probably do it. Have fun and catch fish.

Ok. April 1rst is here and I still plan on going to Montana. This is a very busy month for me so May is the earliest I can go right now or push it back to the end of summer. Everything in between is looking very bad for taking time off of work. So the question is the same as before. If you live in Montana near the Ennis area would you like to meet up? I plan on fishing but being social with some like minded individuals is always nice. Also should the weather be decent in May? From a historical standpoint.

You should be fine in May, you could still get a spring snowstorm so pack some warm clothing, the nights can still be a bit on the chilly side, we just finally warmed to the thirties for lows (last week it was twenties), we're about 1000 ft lower elevation wise than Ennis. (Missoula) Due to planning issues and work being... work. Looks like the first week of October for my trip. I've decided to go with renting an RV making moving around fishing a bit easier. I could still go in 3 weeks but the weather looks kinda yucky and I'm just a soft CA kid. October is on the cooler side for sure.

I'll be relocating to eastern WA fairly soon and Ennis is only about 550 miles away - I can probably do that. We'll see what shakes out. Or maybe I'll bum a ride with sixgun, heh.
