I built this thumb out of two nails, a broken bottle and some razorwire.

Fun fact, this thread is currently getting a lot of videos and I will probably not be able to update the OP each day, so make sure you check out the last few pages of the thread if you haven't.

Since the latest Steam sale I have been toying with the idea to start a collective Let's try thread. We've had a few of these before. The basic concept is to try a game you haven't played before to see how long you can keep going, either until you die or get bored.

I hope everyone joins in.

That said there are some rules specific for this thread:
The 3 month rule is null and void in this thread, you can try almost any game you want.

Thread conduct:
1) Only one video per game, if you want to show off more go make a proper LP.
This is a try thread, you're not allowed to try a game twice. That said you're welcome to try a game someone else has already tried.
2) No new AAA titles, don't use the thread as a place for quick look videos of recent well known releases.
There is no 3 month rule here, so let's not ruin this exemption by flooding the thread with people playing the latest big game release the day it's out. If it's a AAA title that was just release then try something else. The same goes for high profile indie games. Let's leave the fresh, well known games out of the thread. Older AAA titles are fine, just don't rush poo poo for the sake of playing it first.
3) Write a proper fact blurb for each game, like a mini OP. Where to find it, what it cost, why you want to try it and all that.
This will make it easier for everyone to know what they are watching and it will make my index of all the videos look way better.

I will try and keep an updated list on all the games posted in the second post. Let's get this thing started.

Latest videos:

I caught wind of this game a little before it came out and decided to gather some people together to give it the old college let's try. Monaco is a single player or multiplayer top-down stealth kind of game where you have a team of four people with unique abilities. You work together using your team's areas of expertise to complete missions while collecting money and avoiding traps, guards, and a whole lot of security measures. Essentially it's Ocean's Eleven: The Game. For this video I have a few goons join me for a four-person let's try, and things go... Well you'll see. It's a bit disorienting at first, but once we learn how to knock out guards we actually start to work together

Watch Here: Let's Try: 'Red Faction: Armageddon' (YouTube)

I had effectively left the Red Faction series at Red Faction II, a game which I loved as a kid. I still own my PS2 copy and now thanks to the wonderful world of digital distribution and Steam sales I have the entire series on Steam. I was surprised to read that Volition, the studio that made the first two games (which are first person shooters), actually made the latest 2 installments in the series which are now third person shooters. Volition also made the Saints Row games and Armageddon was released in the same year and on the same engine as Saints Row: The Third.

I have played a little bit of Guerilla but I heard it gets very stale in the mid to late game and up until this point I hadn't touched Armageddon. Finally getting around to it now and I figured it might be a nice opportunity to make a Let's Try (and potentially Fail) video.

Let's try and fail Drox Operative (TM)
Get Drox Operative (TM) from Soldak Entertainment

I wanted to try out Drox Operative, since I enjoyed "Din's Curse", the previous RPG title from Soldak Entertainment.

Drox Operative is a spaceship action RPG set in a randomly generated war-torn universe. Your mission as a Drox Operative is to fly your ship into a randomly generated sector, complete randomly generated quests given by random alien factions, and to equip your ship with randomly generated loot to become the most badass Drox Operative possible. When you've attained the loftiest heights of power, you'll solve the sector's problems by completing one of the variably violent victory conditions. After this, a new, more difficult sector is generated, and the cycle begins anew. Just like in Mass Effect.

I didn't really know what to expect out of Don't Starve, I knew it was a rougelike and that the game itself looks pretty cool. I had read the following though:

"Play as Wilson, an intrepid Gentleman Scientist who has been trapped by a demon and transported to a mysterious wilderness world. Wilson must learn to exploit his environment and its inhabitants if he ever hopes to escape and find his way back home. Enter a strange and unexplored world full of strange creatures, dangers, and surprises. Gather resources to craft items and structures that match your survival style. Play your way as you unravel the mysteries of this strange land."

Let's try Trials Evolution Gold (Baldurdash | Youtube HD | Download)
Buy it on Steam maybe?

I've wanted to play Trials for a while, but I almost never use any of my consoles and I just didn't feel it was worth it. But a few weeks ago it came out of PC and I've been playing a lot of it since release. Trials is 2.5D platformer where you control a rider on his motorcycle trying to get to the end of a track. It's a pretty simple idea to grasp, and for me it has that right amount of difficulty that you keep on playing "just one more level".

"Do you have what it takes to be president?"

The Political Machine 2012 is a turn-based strategy game, developed and published by Stardock Entertainment, and released on July 31st, 2012. Players must battle for the coveted American presidency, choosing from a list of historical candidates [depicted as bobbleheads] or creating their own. In each turn, you'll pick subjects for speeches and tailor ad campaigns, as well as picking which states your candidate will take the time to personally visit. The end of the game comes on Election Day, when the votes are tallied and you discover who Ohio decided should be President.

Remember the 90’s? Remember Doom? That exhilarating gameplay and the thrill of surviving waves of demons. Well, forget all that, this is Doom 3 where we reinvent the wheel by making it more like Half-Life and System Shock 2.

This will be a playthrough of the original Doom 3. I wanted to give this a fair try after hearing so much about it. Its flaws are glaring and hard to ignore, but maybe fun can still be had?

Tiny and Big is a pretty cool open-ended puzzle game made by Black Pants Game Studio. The core mechanics include using a laser to cut through solid objects, a grappling hook to pull blocks about and rockets to launch things off cliffs. You can buy it through Steam, also on gog.com if you prefer and Desura. You can even get it through the developers' own website if you so choose. It's pretty fun, I recommend it highly!

"Nearly 20 different maps make District 187: Sin Streets one of the most full-featured first-person shooters on the market!"

District 187: Sin Streets is a competitive multiplayer first-person shooter, developed and published by NetMarble, and released on November 27th, 2012. The game pits two infinite armies of clones elite members of SWAT against ruthless members of some unnamed criminal gang. The game's gimmick is a game mode called "Street Fight," which attempts to incorporate an MMO-style "territory war" into the game, but which nobody actually seems to actively participate in any more, rendering the feature null.

Trine is a fantasy platformer released from Frozenbyte Studios. You switch between three playable characters who all inhabit the same body due to some magical curse or something. It's somewhat reminiscent of The Lost Vikings. It was followed up with a sequel in December 2011.

I was left kinda cold by my first real play session of this game. I'm not sure why, since I generally really enjoy platformers. Maybe it's a game that deeply needs an atmosphere you can't maintain while talking over it. I'm not sure.

Just like the previous guy, I tried my hand at Antichamber, a puzzle game that has a few new tricks to it that use big long words to describe. I'm still not completely sure how I solved some most of the puzzles in this game. I would love to see the coding that went into this.

Let's Try Antichamber

Antichamber is a (loving sweet) first-person puzzle game that released yesterday, the 31st of January (or 1st of February in some parts of the world; mine, for example). It's been touted by a bunch of people as having puzzles that revolve around Non-Euclidian geometry; this is not the case, but it certainly sounds interesting. A better term might have been "Quantum Puzzle Game", since the mere observation of and human interaction with puzzles and rooms in the game changes their nature. Of course, I didn't realise this at the time, due to my understanding of what Non-Euclidian Geometry was having only come through osmosis.

After recording I spent another five hours on the game and finished almost everything in it; I really recommend picking this up.

Antichamber is $20 on Steam, currently on sale for $15.

"The ultimate James Bond video game."

007 Legends is a first-person shooter entry in the James Bond games franchise, developed by Eurocom and published by Activision, released on October 16th 2012 (November 1st on PC). It was later removed from store shelves / digital distribution / the face of the Earth on January 2nd, 2013, with Activision [so far] having given no explanation as to why.

The game pits you as the titular 007 (AKA "Jimmy Bond"), bearing the physical likeness of Daniel Craig, as you flash back to some previous adventures from the film franchise's past (Goldfinger, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Moonraker, Licence to Kill, Die Another Day). Naturally, the stories have been compressed for time, and contain roughly quadruple the amount of gunfight sequences. A sixth campaign based on Skyfall was released as free DLC to coincide with the release of the movie (Which itself was released to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the James Bond film franchise).

Homefront is a good idea. Pretty crap execution but a nice idea still. It has some attraction story wise, but the gameplay is bog standard and I just find myself loving around more than anything else. If it had tried another system then it could have stood out amongst other things but I can't see playing much further than I got. If you're a fan of these kinds of games/stories or you just want something that doesn't take any thought to play, then this would be a game for you.

Still want to know what I was the pilot of.

I Wanna Be The Guy: Gaiden is a sequel of sorts to I Wanna Be the Guy. Made by Kayin, this new game brings some new mechanics to the table, namely a grappling hook via Bionic Commando. Of course, the game is ball-bustingly hard. Will I conquer the game or will it leave me crying? Check in on the video.

Let's Try "Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2013"
Posted by Habermann
Digital Download on Steam

"Can you hold your own against the most vicious beasts the animal kingdom has to offer?"

Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2013 is a hybrid hunting simulator / action game, developed by Cauldron and published by Activision, released into the wild on October 23rd 2012. It tells the tale of two brothers "torn apart" after a goddamn grizzly bear kills their father. Ten years later, they decide to exact their revenge by killing every animal in the world. You'll gun down animals ranging from "harmless" to "uncharacteristically ferocious," as mobs of predators swarm you in a pathetic attempt to protect themselves from getting shot in the heart.

On consoles which are not the personal computer, the game comes with a specialized light gun dubbed the "Fearmaster," which monitors your heartbeat and apparently makes the game more difficult to play when you're "afraid." This seems like some gimmick out of a loving William Castle theatrical release.

Captain Planet and the Planeteers (Amiga)

Posted by Test Pilot Monkey
It was the 90's, and people were trying to get kids interested in saving the environment. And what better way than to create an eco-warrior super hero and make a cartoon series for him? (There are probably a lot of better ways.)

And in part of the push to market this character to death, they developed a few games for a few different systems. I'll be playing the Amiga version, and wishing I didn't.

Captain Planet and the Planeteers

FUN FACT! : This game features a character called Duke Nukem (not that one) who was voiced in the cartoon by none other than Dean Stockwell, famous for portraying Al in Quantum Leap.

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition is the PC port of the original console game with all new features (which won't be discovered in this video) including new bosses, enemies, equipment, and NPCs. Unfortunately the technical side of the port proved to be lackluster: a maximum resolution of 720p, no enhancements for keyboard controls, a framerate locked at 30 FPS, and Games For Windows Live integration have tarnished an otherwise brilliant game, though it should be noted that fans have fixed many of these problems (scroll to the bottom of the first post). Orcs Must Die 2 is a pretty simple tower defence in 3rd person game. Lots of Orcs and Hugh Jackmans try and leave through the front door and you try and stop them. It's also amazingly fun in coop.
I haven't played the previous game and I'm pretty certain Blister hasn't played it much either. The game is still simple and straight forward enough that you don't really need much info to get into the game which is nice. It's also amazingly loud, but I fixed that in editing.

I Am Alive is one of those games that deal with post-apocalyptic worlds, misery, decay, the downfall of humanity and lots of dust. Did we mention that there's a lot of dust in this game? Either way, the game was released in 2011 and was developed by two different studios. Darkworks started work on this game in 2005 and stopped in 2007. Their progress was picked up by the Ubisoft Shanghai studio in 2008, who finished the game. It's essentially a survival horror game where you climb on stuff, jump and do some acrobatics that drain your stamina, so you have to be careful with the way you move. Also, the apocalypse made people really nervous and most of them will want to kill you on sight, so you have to be careful. You have a pistol, but ammo is very limited in this game so you have to pick your battles well. Watch as I get confused by this game!

Oh, and there's a lot of dust, too.

Let's Try Rock Of Ages!

Rock of Ages is an interesting mix of tower defense and Super Monkey Ball, the main premise being that you, playing as a very pissed off Sisyphus, decide to break out of Hades and make your way through the ages, squishing other important historical figures beneath a giant boulder. But before you can squish them, you have to break down their gate! Of course, they're trying to do the same to you, so you need to build defenses in order to stop them from doing so (Or at least slow them down long enough that you can break their doors down first!)

There are also some fun little bonus modes, such as races, time trials, and SkeeBoulder (Race against a friend to smash as many targets as you can, then roll your boulder into a skeeball board to try and get the best multiplier!)

It's a wonderfully goofy and irreverent game, and at the time of writing this it's on sale for like $3 on Steam (Normally it's $10), so give it a look!

Get it at the Steam Store here!

The Final Fantasy Legend aka Makai Toushi SaGa is the first title from of SaGa franchise. It was the first RPG on the Gameboy, the player can take the role of four players and participate in turn-based battles. Despite the fact that it made use of Final Fantasy's fame for marketing purposes in the West, The Final Fantasy Legend shouldn't be ignored because of that. Hell, it even has Nobuo Uematsu composing the soundtrack. It's also worth noting that it was the first Square title to sell in the millions. The heroes (that's us) intend to climb The Tower to Paradise, but it's a daring task as nobody before them has ever returned (probably because they're enjoying bloody paradise).

I personally played this once as a kid, and was for literally five or ten minutes, or so. The lack of colour and the reliance on text kind of put me off the title, but that's kids for you. I played it blind, and broke the SSLP I had done into two parts (it felt like it was better separated due to the tone of both parts and pacing--rest assured that it is still the only playthrough I did). This is also the first-ever time I've tried doing an LP so, uhh, I hope it's still up to a reasonable standard even though it's blind and all that. I thought this would be fun to join in on.

Let's Try "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?"
Digital Download on Steam

"Grab a pencil and a piece of paper."

Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? is a quiz game based on the TV show of the same name, developed by THQ's "value software" division, ValuSoft, and released in 2007 for the PC and Nintendo DS. You must answer a series of 10 questions taken from 1st through 5th grade cirriculum, before answering a final 6th grade question and proving to the world that you are - in fact - smarter than a 5th grader. At the same time, you must also endure the biting wit of MENSA member Jeff Foxworthy.

In this 36-minute video, me and my guest commentator (dihydrocodeine) attempt to win the million dollar grand prize three times, winning on the third attempt. There are no alternate game modes or unlockable content. The money you "win" by playing the game can't be put towards anything. In other words, this video technically demonstrates a 100% run of the game. Which means you don't have to buy this game to see the ending for yourself. Glad I could help!

Psychonauts is the first completed project that came out from Tim Schafer's Double Fine Productions in 2005 on XBox, PC, and PS2. It is a platformer with strong storytelling, humor and dialogue that centers around a young Raz, the son of a family of circus performers, who runs away from the circus to become a Psychonaut. As Raz explore Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp and the minds of those there, he'll expand his abilities as well as uncover more secrets of the camp.

The game can be found around $10 on Steam (Windows, Linux, or Mac), GoG (Windows and DRM-free), Mac App Store, and Ubuntu Software Center. Often goes on sale on Steam and GoG for 75% off.

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing is a game in which your favorite mascots of a video game franchise come together to ride go-karts around thematically inspired tracks, using power-ups and weapons inspired by the Sega games, like green things that bounce around the course, red things that home in on your enemies, and even character-specific power ups. It's such a crazy idea, I can't believe nobody's done it before.

In all seriousness, this is a perfectly adequate kart racing game. I wish I'd had the settings turned down a little so it would run better, but we were already going and didn't want to stop. I didn't think I'd return to this game, until I heard that one of the unlockable characters is Ulala from Space Channel 5. I make absolutely no apologies in wanting to race as her very much.

Jet Set Radio came out in 2000 for the Dreamcast, this is the HD rerelease that came out just a few months ago. Its a smooth, stylish platformer about street gangs of rollerblading graffiti artists and the cartoonish cops that pursue them. Its absolutely gorgeous which my recording doesn't do justice. EDGE is an isometric block platformer developed by Mobigame for iOS devices. The game later saw releases on Steam, Android devices, and the Playstation Mini library. Decided to finally play the game after obtaining it from a humble bundle ages ago. The soundtrack for the game's pretty impressive, but the gameplay is rather simple and gets repetitive after awhile. It's also pretty short with only forty-six levels, each taking around a minute or two to complete. It's pretty cheap so if this kind of gameplay is your thing then go ahead, otherwise you aren't missing out on much.

Cryostasis on Steam.

Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason is a first-person action game that mixes survival horror and FPS and from the first sitting feels like a mix between Bioshock and Metro2033 with a spot of Penumbra.
Developed by the Ukranian studio Action Forms it's a story about Alexander Nesterov who is tasked to investigate the 'North Wind', a nuclear ice-breaker shipwrecked in the Arctic Circle. Alexander quickly realizes that something's iffy about the monstrous hunk of metal as he gets attacked by frozen remains of what used to be human beings as well as other paranormal happenings.

While working on this mini-OP I also realized that there are already two LPs of it in the archive: It's been done subtitled and informative by Blister and in a more humerous way by Khad.

The Binding of Isaac is an indie game made by Edward McMillen of Super Meat Boy fame. It can be best described as a Legend of Zelda style rougelike. It consists of randomly generated dungeons, items, and bosses. The music is composed by Danny Baranowsky, also of SMB fame.

Also, this game is noted for its difficulty. It can be very unforgiving and downright cruel at points.

The game is on sale on Steam, and I would encourage that anyone that hasn't picked it up yet do so.

Eryi's Action is what happens when Kaizo Mario and I Wanna Be the Guy are thrown into a compiler and given an anime-style skin. Everything in this game wants to kill you, and anything that doesn't immediately kill you is just biding its time. It's got all the familiar traps - the first level is on the tame side by having most of them hidden. Later levels tend to show you where the traps are, and leave you to discover how they kill you firsthand. It's an exercise in either memorization or psychic ability and luck - most of the traps are simple enough once you understand how they work, but there are some puzzles where you'll have to find new ways to manipulate the game elements, and the water level will kill you every which way no matter how proficient you become at dodging everything.

In other words, it's a pathetically simple game that I completely suck at. I even managed to fail at failing properly - the options for Hypercam had somehow set themselves to 10 FPS, which I didn't notice until after I'd finished recording the full video. I think it's still pretty watchable, but not very smooth. If I post any future Let's Fail videos, I'll definitely do a better job of it. Until then, enjoy the ultimate failure that can only be achieved in a first playthrough, with heavy editing, post-commentary, and, I promise, a complete no-death run through the level by the end of the video.

Since I last tried a lovely puzzle game that nobody enjoyed I figured that this was perfect. I ran across it while digesting my Christmas dinner and said "Hey, this sounds really interesting." Like I said in the video, it gives off the same feel as the first Portal game. It feels like an experiment, but not one of those take ten different game's resources, shove 'em into our engine, and call it a day type experiments. No, it feels like a game that got a lot of work and a dash of love put into it, but it wasn't trying to be ambitious or to start something amazing even when it did. The mindset that you get into is kind of awesome. It's been a while since I played a puzzle game that felt as rewarding as this.

Wizorb is yet another Breakout/Arkanoid game, wrapped in the aesthetics of an SNES RPG. It has some interesting mechanics but a few dumb choices hold it back so it's kind of a wash in the end. Wizorb is currently the only release from Tribute Games, and is available for PC, Mac, Linux, XBLIG, and iOS.

The Fish Fillets 2 blows. I'm a goddamn Bad Rats King and this thing is still one of the shittiest titles on my Steam account. It was also a Christmas gift, so it seemed like something I could totally gently caress with for this thread when blind. I played through the tutorial before recording and then learned that it had hideous memory leak problems.

As a result, this video ends catastrophically.

It costs $3 of its usual $5 price in the current Steam sale. I don't advise buying it, but if you want, please, go check it out over here.

Black Mesa is a recreation of Half Life using the Source engine. After 8! years in development it is finally out. Every level has been completely remade up to the Xen Chapters. Its completely free without any Valve products. Black Mesa is great and if you are a fan of the original or wanting see what Half Life is all about this remake comes highly recommended.

This is a commentated VLP of a later but representative chapter of Black Mesa, in it I will be playing through Questionable Ethics on hard difficulty. This is the 11th of the 14 chapters in Black Mesa, so beware of spoilers for a 12 year old game... The video is available in 1080p.

Let's Try Rochard
Posted by salttotart
I seem to be collecting a bunch of 2D side-scrollers in my Steam library because here comes another one.

Rochard, developed by Recoil Games, was released in November 2011 to great reviews in the Indie and mainstream community. On first-sight it looks like they smashed the faces of Half-Life and Futurama together, wiped away the blood, and created Rochard. The soundtrack is pretty epic (for what is is) and comes along with the voice talent of Jon St. John.

Overall, this is something I may continue on playing in the coming months. It's fun and simple to pick up and play... and it's on sale. Always a plus.

Let's Try "Juiced 2: Hot Import Nights"
Digital Download on GamersGate

"The crowd is hungry for thrills. Feed them."

Juiced 2: Hot Import Nights is a racing game, developed by either Juice Games (X360/PS2/DS) or Paradigm Entertainment (PC/PS3/PSP), and published in 2007 by THQ. It not only allows you to customize your character, but in a radical new concept introduced by the game, also allows you to customize your car! You can then race said car against other cars on racetracks, where it is your objective to dodge turtle shells and come as close to 1st place as you can.

One of the game's bigger gimmicks is the "Driver DNA" system, which pretends to analyze your habits while driving and assigns you a driver personality-type. Theoretically, other players can download your DNA and race against it in some sort of hybrid ghost race mode. I say "theoretically," because this game's multiplayer was apparently dead on arrival, and because you can't even buy this game on Steam anymore. The only reason I happen to own it is because it was packaged in with the 2008 THQ Collection, back when THQ wasn't on the verge of financial collapse and was more willing to part with top-tier games like this for mere pennies on the dollar.

Let's Try Really Big Sky

Posted by JamieTheD
Really Big Sky, by Boss Baddie Games (Design: James Whitehead, Music: Mr. Pineapple, and Art: Caroline Powrie) is an amusing twin-stick shooter where, much like the [Insert Word] Souls games, you are going to die, so you might as well take as many of the bastards out with you as you can. Unfortunately, I can't don't want to restart to give you an idea of what the game's like before you've bought everything and unlocked nearly everything, but there we are.

So, what makes RBS different from other twin-sticks?

1) It gets faster and faster, harder and harder, until either you or your computer can't take it any more, and you die (you always die before it has a chance to crash)

2) The descriptions of the enemies and items makes it pretty obvious that the team are well aware of how silly the game is, and the commentary (voiced by Mr. Pineapple) gives a feel of a game played with a drunken mate. Which is always good.

3) It's simple and plain goshdarn fun!

Let's Try Evolva

$2.99 on GOG

Dating back to June of 2000, Evolva is a third person action title that sees you controlling a team of four aliens known as "Genohunters". By absorption of defeated enemy remains you can mutate your creatures into new specimens, giving them abilities that aid your progress through the game's dozen or so levels.

I got a copy of the CD version in 2005 during a sale at nothingbutsoftware, bundled with Giants: Citizen Kabuto, and though I've played about half an hour of Giants, Evolva's been sitting unopened ever since. I've always been too intimidated to pursue a real LP, but this "Let's Try" approach seems quite accessible, and the game was asking to be played. I considered trying out the conceptually similar "Seventh Cross Evolution" for the Dreamcast, but Evolva's much easier to come by, and as a result seems more in the spirit of the thread.

Let's Try and Fail: KzMod
Kreedz Climbing Mod (KzMod for short) is a nonviolent sourcemod about climbing.

KZ is a gametype that was popular in Cs 1.6 wherein the objective is to make it through an obstacle course by using weird tricks that were possible only in the 1.6 goldsource engine, mostly having to do with air acceleration gained by using your mouse and looking. Long story short, kz is to source as trick jumping is to quake.

Now I and several of my friends have played the alpha of this game years ago so we are quite out of practice, hence the fail part of all this. We all piled into a skype call to try out the 1.0 release of KzMod, which brags that it has close to 1.6 movement. Let's see how many times we can break our legs!

Where to download it

This is hide, a survival horror game that feels a lot like Slender, but came out about a year beforehand and is actually pretty good. It has an interesting style and uses what it has well. Because it is an extremely short game, I put up two videos. The first one is more informative, as I do post commentary and talk more about the gameplay elements. The second one is a more casual playthrough, as I play with a friend of mine and we try to get all the signs. This is my first attempt at an LP, so it's probably not that great, but please try to enjoy it!

Let's Try Sid Meier's: Pirates
Posted by Brassherald
Youtube

Today, we join Biff, a new pirate on the high seas in Sid Meier's: Pirates. So, in 1987, Sid Meier released a pirate simulator for basically everything in existence, not just DOS like I said in the video. In 2004, he released a nice looking upgrade to this pirate simulator for basically everything except Sony's Home system. It has diplomacy (Or at least something like that), a trading system, ship battles, sword fights, stealth, and from what I hear land battles as well. Pretty good game considering you can get it for $10 most of the time on Steam and it is only $5 until Jan. 5. And you can get it on many systems, details on the game site because this is a shitload of systems including the iPad, so screw off, not going to be posting each link.

Let's try Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chickens with cKnoor and Blister(Baldurdash | Youtube HD | Download)
Find it at http://www.rocketbirds.com/

This is one of those games Blister gave me a few weeks ago. It seems to be some kind of coop shooter platform puzzle thing. It's actually not that bad I guess, but then again pretty much any coop game is fun just because it's coop. I honestly don't have that much to say about it, other than that I'd probably play some more of it if there's time. It was actually a pretty enjoyable experience. Which is not what I except from the game Blister sends me over Steam.

Steam - XBLA - PSN

Uncertain of his sister's fate, a boy enters LIMBO.

LIMBO is a 2010 indie game released on PC and consoles to critical acclaim. With a focus on puzzles and platforming, the game uses a unique silhouetted art style to establish it's dark, sinister world.

Right now it's on Steam for 5 dollars, so if this video gets you interested I would highly suggest picking it up, as I can already tell from my brief experience that this will be the type of game you want to clear yourself, not watch someone else play.

Let's Try Hammerfight
Posted by abraham linksys

Hammerfight is a game by one crazy Russian dude, Konstantin Koshutin (which is a loving GREAT name for a crazy Russian developer!). It's a game about smashing flying machines with your flying machine. There's also a bunch of weird political poo poo going on, and tribes, and it all seems vaguely Middle Eastern. It's completely baffling, is what I'm saying.

Let's Try (And Fail) Deep Black: Reloaded

Posted by JamieTheD
Steam Page Desura Page (Where they have a better idea of how to price it)

Deep Black: Reloaded, much like Hydrophobia: Prophecy, is a remake for PC of a game that originally came out on XBLA, hitting our PC shores March of this year. It had originally come out two years earlier, but was apparently unpopular enough that the wiki page is surprisingly sparse. So let me sum it up:

Deep Black: Reloaded is a game about a moron in a high-tech wetsuit with jets. He can't use these jets to jump, because he's a moron. He's enough of a moron to believe his old buddy General something-or-other when he's told to go on a black-op that's supposedly hostage rescue, but, because he works for a PMC, it's predictably a powerful corporate target, and poo poo goes down. It's a passable third person shooter which, on the upside, has good underwater stuff going on. On the downsides, the difficulty curve is somewhat bullshit (but not total bullshit), you can't save properly (checkpoints, yay! ), and the writing is godawful. HAM AHOY!

Let's Fail Paranormal By Default

Posted by JamieTheD
Desura Page

For it's price of around £7, Paranormal is an interesting experiment that is worth at least looking at. It's an Unreal 3 engine game, meant to be a "haunting simulator", in the words of its creator, Matt Cohen. It has quite a few events that are a scripted core of the game, with a couple that are, LE GASP, procedurally generated! It also, last I checked, had multiple endings, all of which seem to result in the main character being murdered by one of several ghosties that inhabit the house of Mattel Clarke (totes not Matt Cohen!), an artist who just won't quit, and has decided to record his experiences via the wonders of shaky-cam! Hence, you fail by default.

Is it, as the game declares, a Haunting Simulator? No, or if it is, it was a movie haunting scripted by Michael Bay (Age 9). Is it a good horror game? Not really, it's too overdone for that. But is it interesting, and mildly amusing to play? Yeah, I'd say so!

Virtual Boy Wario Land is the cream of the crop, as it were, of the Virtual Boy library. It's an original Wario game, similar to the first Wario Land on Game Boy. If you can manage to track down and obtain a virtual boy and get it, then I recommend it highly. Or you could opt for other methods like mine. Either way, check it out. Also I was quite impressed with the graphics, but when I viewed it in non-anaglyphic form I saw the palette's only like 4-5 colours. Still beats the hell out of any Game Boy game, though.

Let's Try - NightSky Steam Page

NightSky is a puzzle-platformer type deal. It's on PC as well as WiiWare, and is current $3 in the steam holiday sale so... you should probably get on that. You play as some kind of magical billiard ball. You can roll left or roll right. In most levels you get one or two magic powers, such as super speed, or gravity inversion, and these come into play in the puzzles. It's not particularly hard, at least not from what I played, and it's actually really zen and relaxing. If you want a really enjoyable little game that you can just relax with, you've come to the right place. The resolution in the video is kind of low, but that's actually as big as the game can get, which is a little annoying, but doesn't really detract from the experience.

Let's Try - Rogue Warrior
Rogue Warrior on Steam

Rogue Warrior is a budget FPS made by Zombie Studios and published by Bethesda. It's a game about the exploits of real life veteran Navy SEAL, Dick Marcinko. If this game is accurate to Marcinko's auto-biography, then he is voiced by Mickey Rourke and stabbed 500 North Koreans to death while saying "rock and roll mother fuckers". Gameplay elements were dropped from this game when developers decided they wanted to focus on animating Dick Marcinco stabbing people in 500 different ways.

Containment is a puzzle game, of course, with what seems like a pretty decent story. In the game, the goal is to surround the zombies with a perimeter of people that are all dressed in the same color: Blue Policemen, Green Armymen, Pink Scientist, and Orange Punks in the first two levels. You can also use some items as well as "Environmental Hazards". It may not be great viewing, but, all in all, its a pretty decent casual game.

You can get it on steam here for just under $2 until January 5, then for $5. You can also get it for the iPad, where it may be more fun for just under $1 here

Let's Try (And Sorta Fail) Nail'd!

Steam Store Page

For those who like their extreme sports games ultra fast *and* easy to control, Nail'd, from my first try, is definitely a good one to try out. It was developed, surprisingly, by Techland, who you may remember for the ambitious, yet not very exciting Dead Island, and, for a game from two years ago, looks dead nice... except for the whole watermelons thing...

I thought I'd do a Let's try of this for two reasons: 1) It was £4 on Steam (£2 now the Steam Sale hit the day after I bought it... ), and 2) I didn't get to review this one, instead having to review Reflex: MX Vs ATV, which came out at the same time, and was massively inferior to this!

Essentially, it's MX/ATV racing at high speed, through obstacle littered courses, with boost from landing properly, doing stunts, etc, etc... And the tracks do actually get harder after the first tourney!

The Iconoclasts is an action-adventure game that has actually yet to be finished. An alpha of the game was released a year or two ago that lasted about an hour. The game is made by Joakim Sandberg, who you might recognize as the creator behind games like Noitu Love 2 and Legend of Princess. He's a really talented guy, and The Iconoclasts is his going to end up being his biggest game yet. While there is no planned release for the game, a newly released alpha for this action-adventure game was released last October. This game has some very nice sprites and is already a blast to play. All of his games can be downloaded from his website, except for Noitu Love 2, which you can find on Steam.

It was released to great reviews (Metascore of 81), so let's see if it's up to my muster.

You can buy a digital download of Euro Truck Sim 2 for €29.95 / $39.95 from http://www.eurotrucksimulator2.com/

I bought Euro Truck Simulator 2 for the low low price of £9.99 at a local PC world store. The reason for this is no brick and mortar store genuinely expects anyone to buy this.

So, Let's Try Ys: The Oath In Felghana.
Buy it on Steam

(Also available on PSP from your favorite online retailer)

Ys could be generally labelled as an RPG series, but the gameplay mechanic changes so much between games that you can't really just pass it off as a standard-formula JRPG. The games have gone from a "run into guys to attack" style of combat, to a side-scroller, to more of a fast-paced hack-n-slash mixture. This particular game, a remake of Ys III, combines III's story with V's hack-n-slash mechanics, on VI's engine.
It actually works pretty well.

On a whim, I picked up Ys: The Oath In Felghana on the last Steam summer sale on a friend's recommendation, but never touched it before. I've never heard of Ys outside of seeing some used PSP copies at Gamestop and its Steam re-releases, but apparently it's been around quite a long time, as old as the PC-88. Of course I didn't know any of that when I recorded the footage, so look forward to me sounding ignorant saying "This looks pretty good for a mid-budget game!"

Let's Try Infernal!

Infernal is a third person shooter that came and went without much fanfare or recognition, possibly on account of the fact it didn't really stand out much at the time in face of stiff competition. It's got a plot riddled with cliché, and the dialogue is hilarious for all the wrong reasons. I don't remember which bundle I got it with but I've had it on Steam for a while and this thread finally inspired me to install it.

Let's (try to) Play Farmville 2!
Posted by Experto Crede
Hosted on SSLP to avoid jamming this thread up
Farmville was a game made by Zynga in 2009. You all doubtless know of Zynga, but for the sake of neatness, here's a little bio:

Zynga are effectively gaming world bad guys du jour. Their basic business model is: Find a popular game and then either buy out the producers or blatantly rip that game off. Alternatively, they reskin their "click square, repeat ad nauseum" game. They then put their product on facebook and quite literally bombard you with messages to buy their in-game currency and tell your friends how socially stunted you are. After a very strong IPO, their finances have been dropping pretty quickly, as it seems making basically the same game and buying companies for well above their worth doesn't make investors comfortable

So, what is farmville? A blatant rip off of another game wherein you click a square, then click another and so on before telling your friends that you clicked a square. It became insanely popular and resulted in a Manchester man committing murder to get more in-game money. No, really... People generally grew to loathe the game as they were flooded with requests from their grandparents for more grain.

Let's Try (and fail?) Half-Life 2: Lost Coast (with special guest Vicas!)
Half-Life 2: Lost Coast on Steam

Half-Life 2: Lost Coast is a tech demo of a level that was eventually cut from the release of Half-Life 2. It was originally conceived as part of the Highway 17 section of the game. It was released free to anyone who owns Half-Life 2 on October 27, 2005. As far as I know, it was never released in a box (thus, the screenshot for the logo.)

On Steam, this is listed with a rather shocking price of $39.99, but that's because it's included in the Valve Complete Pack. (I believe I got my copy because I have the Orange Box, which includes HL2.)

Believe it or not, I've never beaten Half-Life 2. My computer wouldn't run it when it came out. Vicas has played all the games, but never played Lost Coast.

Lone Survivor is a game I probably picked up in a Humble Indie Bundle-- I can't say for sure. All I know is it's been sitting in my Steam library and I've never played it before. Now I'm no stranger to pixelated retro adventures; they're some of my favorite games, in fact! Lone Survivor is a bit different, however. Lone Survivor is, as the name would imply, a survival horror game much similar to the first thirty minutes I played of Silent Hill 2. Frankly I'm quite terrible at survival horror games (I'm generally not even that interested in them in the first place) and even worse at live commentary so I'm not sure why I thought this would be a good idea but here we are. I'll probably never play this game again but hey maybe it'll be right up someone else's alley.

Buy it here.

Hunted: TDF is an interesting game to say the least. It tries to match the gameplay of a lot of the more recent action titles while still having the flavor of a fantasy rpg. I know that in the video I bumble around and make a lot of half-thought out sentences, but after getting into the swing of it this turned out to be a pretty fun game. The graphics are a bit flat, but the game's art design is very well thought out and, aside from it being a bit to dark at times, it looks gorgeous. The partner AI is surprisingly smart and once I got out of the prologue it proved to be just as effective as I was in combat. Hunted has its share of bugs. You can see one of them when I pick up the gold and it tells me that I've got several hundred in total. It was also a bitch to get running initially and the loading screens took several minutes each the first time. This apparently only happens the first time so not too big a deal. Hunted also apparently subscribes to the Dragon Age theory that all the blood in an enemy's body will inexorably end up on you somehow.

Let's Try - Basement Collection Steam Page

The Basement Collection is a thing you can buy on steam for $4 (not $3 like I say in the video). It's got a whole bunch of games in it. A collection of games, you could say. They're all designed by Edmund McMillen, the designer of Super Meat Boy and Binding of Isaac. Most of them are very good. I'll be taking a look at his game Aether. It originally came out as a flash game in September of 2008, and is available to play free online here. I saw a little bit of this in Indie Game: The Movie, which is what got me interested in it. It's a cool little space exploration game where you visit different planets and solve puzzles. It's pretty short, but it's got some cool mechanics, a great art style, and is a joy to play. I made the video fairly short because it's a short game and I don't really want to do the whole thing, as it's just a let's try. I might do a full playthrough at some other point in time.

It was made by, Thecatamites, who have made a bunch of crazy game for your enjoyment. And by J. Chastain who seems to be a person on the internet.

I'm playing this for my first time, and have done minimal prep work. I watched a short YT clip of someone else stumbling through it, which taught me nothing. I've also read the files in the "HOW TO WIN AT GOBLET GROTTO" folder that came with the game. It didn't tell me poo poo either.

Let's Try: Cave Story+
Steam
Full LP of the original, by Deceased Crab

Cave Story was released in 2004 for PC as freeware. It's a retro-styled shooter/platformer. In 2010 it had a commercial release for WiiWare which added some new features, Cave Story 3D was a version built from scratch for 3DS which came out the following year. The 2011 release of Cave Story+ on Steam kept the WiiWware features and included the option to toggle between the original, and WiiWare graphics, and an exclusive level. That's the version I'm playing here.

It's one of those games that everyone said I had to try when I finally got on Steam. It was probably a gift from one of those people, and I'd like to thank whoever it was because they were right. If you're wondering why Chip isn't in this, he is. All those skype noises are him. I am so sorry and if it weren't for the first impression nature of the thread I'd take it down and re-record.

Dogfighter is an old-fashioned airplane combat simulator game that I found in my list of steam games and have no idea why it was there. The game features arcade-style pickups to upgrade your weapons and defences, and to restore your heath. The default control mode is an arcade-styled controls where its a highly downgraded flight model, but it is nearly impossible to play with a mouse so I decided to use a joystick. However, the arcade-flight model doesn't work at all with a joystick, so I turned on the "advanced" control mode, which is more like a regular flight simulator.

Just go ahead and post it. It's a free for all pretty much.

Edit: But if you do PM I'll make sure to check the thread and put it up in the OP a bit faster.

Let's see what fate has in store.

Shit.

Question: if we want to try a game in a series that we're familiar with, does that still apply? For instance, I've played all the way through Little Big Adventure multiple times, but I haven't set foot into its sequel, despite buying them both off of GOG in a bundle. Would I be able to make a video of that for this thread?

Given how much a series can change from game to game, even in terms of content if not mechanis, I can't particularly see that being a problem.

Sure, as long as you haven't played it before, or haven't played it in a really long time go right ahead. You only get one video per game though, so make it count or something.

Edit: I reckon you could even do DLC for a game you've played a lot if you really wanted to.

What a tuber...

Ah, that old game. Quite the old gem and a good remake to boot.

Save for the new music. Do yourself a favor and switch the options to the beep boop music unless you have a large distaste of chiptunes, the remixes don't do the originals justice.

I also hope you've found out by now that you can shoot up.

You're free to do whatever you want, if you think you can capture a first try of a game with subs then go for it. Same goes for SSLPs.

Let's try Goblet Grotto

Freely available at the Homepage.

I don't remember where I learned about this game, but it has been sitting on my disk for some time. This thread prompted me to play it...not the best idea I've come up with.

Goblet Grotto is too weird and crazy to describe in detail, it really has to be experienced. From what I could gather, you play a toad adventurer that sets out to find goblets and then a ton of crazy poo poo happens.

Well that's not totally true. A big part of the game is the constant sign language your toad throws at you. Aside from the obnoxious sound, it should tell you what's going on. You're supposed to learn a bunch of symbols from a file and then figure out what your toad is saying/wants. Cause you know, toads can't talk or write. But gently caress that! It wouldn't be in the spirit of this thread if I had learned those symbols. also I'm not crazy

After recording I tried to decipher some of the symbol combinations.
They said things such as "I CAN NEVER BE HEALED - I HAVE BEEN SUBMERGED IN FILTH - DEATH DEATH DEATH DEATH DEATH DEATH".

And don't even get me started on the crazy paragraphs file which has 200 entries.

"Goblet Grotto will occasionally direct you to consult the following passages. DO NOT PEEK AHEAD--critical Grotto secrets are contained herein."

It never happened for me, but some of the entries are just batshit.

Well, time to start the show then. As I'm not the best bad at live commentary, I had to fix some things in post.

SORRY FOR NOT BRINGING YOU THE FULL EXPERIENCE OF GOBLET GROTTO

This is my first ever game commentary thing, so expect a bit of awkwardness, but I think it came out alright if you can get over my dumb voice. My microphone is really sensitive so you can hear a bit of mouse clicking, I got out as much as I could, though there's still a bit of audible noise. I'll probably try out a few of the other Basement Collection games later on for this thread, too.

So the toad is supposed to be telling you stuff when the symbols appear on screen? I don't know about you but I got every word he said. It was mostly about how the game depict the every day fulfillment needs of humans including consumption of life giving nutrients, gaining wealth through the acquisition of shiny objects held by things squishier than you and the desecration of tombs or rather the degradation of others to increase one's own self worth. It's a very simple and easily understood lesson if you just listen to the toad.

It was essentially the inspiration for Bastion.

Let's Try Hunted: The Demon's Forge

Watch me try it here
Buy it here.

All in all a decent game for the price and I'll certainly be playing a bit more when I get a chance.

Yeah, this is something I'm curious about too. There's a couple games that I'd list under "Games I played the first 5-15 or so minutes of but never really got into and deleted to save hard drive space", and I'm not sure if those 5-15 minutes of gameplay would count as being proper experience of the game.

Either way, I'd totally be interested in giving this a shot!

I've tried to line up the things I care about in the thread conduct section of the OP. Other than that you are pretty free to do what you want. I mean I've tried some Duke3D mods that I haven't played before but they may not differ that much from the main game. If it works, it works.

If you want to replay something you played a few years ago, go ahead.

You're over analysing it.
Play, record and if it's good it's good. Hell playing the first 5-15 minutes before recording might be good for those games that start with a tutorial.
