I think I am completely in love with this series. I watched the first episode of the anime, which made me go find the manga and blast through it.

I used to live in Gunma. I know exactly how it feels to grow up there. I think there were times I might have hated that place almost as much as Nakamura and Kasuga. I empathize with these characters in a way I don't think I ever really have before with a manga. Which is bizarre, because this definitely might be the most hosed up manga I've ever read.

I used to live in Yamanashi prefecture and I also echo those sentiments and empathy! The similarities of the manga's rusting mountain town to the rusting mountain town (Oh god is that description from Kasuga ever so apt) I lived in is eerily uncanny. When I was reading the manga I knew exactly how Kasuga felt and what was driving him to hate the place.

I especially love the dichotomy between rural Gunma and urban Saitama. There's some real irony that Kasuga's wish of moving to the big city was answered by his family relocating to what's considered to be one of the more boorish and culturally deprived prefectures.

Gah, why is it when poo poo is licensed there is a big-rear end gap between where the the scanlators stop and where the released volumes cover? Come on, the licensor should be able to do better than one volume every 3 months. It'll be next year before we can see issue 44 at this rate.

EDIT: Issue number

EDIT: Issue number

Volume 5 comes out this Tuesday and volume 6 (festival cliffhanger) comes out in July. Vertical's been keeping up a really good pace of pumping volumes out.

If you're concerned that much about translations, chapter 44 raws do exist, so we'll probably see a translation of that soon enough.

This is gonna be interesting.

As for the anime, I'm pretty sure they will only get to the end of the first arc, not all the way to the Festival. One, they only got 3 chapters in in 2 episodes, two, all the really hosed up poo poo is between the mountain and the festival. I don't know if they'd be able to show all that on TV. I could be wrong though.

Love this manga, love the show. I love the rotoscoped animation, I love the aesthetic, I love everything about them both!

I'm caught up in the manga - when the gently caress does the next chapter come out!?!? That cliffhanger had me feeling antsy for days afterwards.

It's unfortunate that people are harping on the animation so much but w/e i guess it's hard to touch that with a ten foot pole when these are largely the same people who think that your generic seasonal anime w/ clean lines and derivative art style are the pinnacles of style and animation that the world has to offer.

I bet Chuck Palahniuk sits at home and furiously masturbates to the Aku no Hana manga every day, this stuff is right up his alley.

God loving drat.

I'm guessing the big tipping point will be Nakamura eventually returning and Kasuga's going to either have to choose between going back to her or moving on and staying with Tokiwa. And given how much of a moronic rear end in a top hat he is he's going to choose the former and thus prove Saeki right and totally ruin Tokiwa.

Yeah totally.

We've been led to believe that Kouji's an rear end in a top hat and kind of a possessive and temperamental dick and maybe he is but it doesn't seem like he was one beyond the way any teenage guy can be. Kasuga, through is sheer awkwardness, decided to make this as public as possible albeit in more of an "acting in the heat of the moment" way than anything else. And Tokiwa's clearly a vulnerable girl who wants someone she feels looks at her honestly who she can be herself with and Kasuga seems to be that guy, kind of like how Saeki was.

He's good at preying on these girls' insecurities/vulnerabilities and the kind of screwed up part is that I don't think he's doing it on purpose. He's just being an emotional social retard and it just kind of happens because he's inadvertantly pushing all the right buttons. He's kind of a Nice Guy except instead of getting "friendzoned" it actually works but with eventually bad results.

You guys may laugh, but I am reading on because I think the story will at least end with a positive note. The flower being crushed in the latest chapter and the author has said that the story is about discovering the end point of adolescence.

Also: How hosed up is Oyasumi Punpun, it looks interesting.

Punpun is incredibly good but on a whole other level of despair and impotence. It gets really soul crushing later on but is without a doubt one of the best coming of age/slice-of-life stories out there.

drat, just read the whole thing up to current ch. yesterday, and this poo poo is great! I was really into the whole "Venus in Furs" thing that Kasuga and Nakamura had. Things were slowing down until that drat coffee shop scene. That was the first time during the entire manga that I had a hard time reading! hahaha

I somehow get embarrassed for the character and have a hard time continuing through the particular scene. Such a weird feeling, does that happen to anybody else? It's not disgust or anything, more like when the awkwardness of a scene gets past a certain level.

Anyway, Nakamura better return! :colbert: Sure, Seika seems to have a bit more backbone now, so she could replace her, but that wouldn't be the same... unless, Tokiwa has a beast in her that is just waiting to come out :getin:

Oh cool. Now I'm kind of mad at myself for catching up with it because now I'll have to go a month in between every ~30 pages. Oh well. Any recommendations on similar stuff? I started reading Onani Master Kyosuke and actually like it a lot despite how ridiculous it is. I read the first 2 chapters of Nozomi to Kimio and I might/might not be into it, can't tell. Oyasumi Punpun is probably too hosed up for me. The combination of the kid being a weird little bird, the kids(and adults for that matter) looking like they're from Attack on Titan, and the thing that happened with his parents at the end of the first volume really creeps me out. I like psychological unease but don't usually do well with stuff that is "visually" creepy, like Oyasumi Punpun. Despite all that I've read 3 or so chapters.

So what else is there for dark coming of age kind of business?

Nozoki Ana is -kinda- along the lines of the other comics you mentioned, but it's slightly more lighthearted. It's also filled with WAY more sex and many panels are people loving even though it's not "hentai" necessarily. It's also a really good comic and has a great ending. :)

A guy got banned for showing a frame of that for it being "porn", it really toes the line between ecchi and hentai. It is similar in theme, but it's definitely erotic fiction.
