Sounds incredible, Lowtax, but what you are talking about would run at least a couple hundred thousand dollars and a long-rear end time to develop properly.

Your idea is essentially a competitive goons-only MMO themed around forum culture. Now, I'm pretty sure that makes most of us jizz our pants, but it's really not feasible. Especially if you want it to be free!

You could always run a private Minecraft server, modded however you like, with multiple factions along forum-lines, with membership contingent on forum postcount, and power structures built around either some kind of intra-forum democratic process, or (and this is what I would do if I were you) arbitrarily (or meritocratically) dictated by the admins and mods. You could set up periodic and mandatory battles with victory conditions and award the members of the victorious factions some trivial privileges, either in-game or on the forums.

In short: I could see an SA-run and (more relevantly to your original idea) SA-themed Minecraft server where admins and mods call the shots and we run around killing each other for worthless prizes to be a huge blast which could easily add several layers to the community dynamics of this place, depending on how ubiquitous participation becomes. But building a goons-only MMO from scratch in the way you're describing is a colossal task, and it's a little hard to see what could be gained from it.

This. Really Lowtax, you ought to know better than anybody how easy it is to convince goons to part with their money. I'm broke, but I'll put my kickstarter donation on my credit card. Hell, I'll get yet another avatar too. It's okay. It's not real money. vv

The game will render each individual block instead of converting smooth areas into a single polygon and texture, just like Minecraft!

You got the money and I got the time.

Charge $2.99/mo for the game, and anyone subscribed to the game gets Premium and Archives and can change their avatar once a month.

You could possibly reduce bandwidth by creating other things to do besides exploring the game world and using that 200kB/s. Maybe create houses, enclosed area or markets.

Allow scripts to be made and applied to things, ala Second Life. Maybe the scripts should be approved first, which is possible because the game will not be as large as SL. You can also appoint moderators who can approve things in exchange for free use of the game.

Let people make their own avatars using a voxel-like editor. 3D "sprites" could be made, along with animations for walking, talking, attacking, etc. This could be either 8 or 16-bit (or both, letting the user decide the fidelity).

The governmental ideas are OK, but should maybe be put on hold. There should be some sort of integration with the forum on day one, however. Also, people shouldn't be tied down to one subforum in-game, or else they might hang out in those real forums where they are not loving wanted and their posts suck.

Seconding Kingdom of Loathing style game, i.e. turn-browser-based RPG or strategy or whatever you call it. Should be relatively easy to develop, does not require ridiculous resources neither to host nor to run and you can start with simple framework and add new features along the way similarly to how KoL adds new locations.

Lowtax posted:

Okay, here's a REAL bare bones idea I came up with this evening. I'm fairly tired, so please excuse any spelling or grammatical fuckups.

Forum wars have always been an exciting yet very VERY illegal way of attacking other forums and transforming their once beautiful forum into a rancid cesspit of failure (for a short period of time), eventually leading into mass banning and a whole bunch of drama nobody really cares to deal with.

SO MY BRAND-SPANKING NEW IDEA IS AS FOLLOWS!!!!

1) We create a "SA Forums Innerforum", a large world broken up and spaced apart from the various forums on SA. GBS will naturally be the crown city, FYAD might be a large pink island to the west, and YOSPOS could be a giant golden island floating throughout the sky... but various subforums will be perfectly able to band together and take down the the highly defensed GBS Crown City. It will completely be up to users, their organization, their power, and their ability to plan missions through.

Each major forum will be given its own large land mass, and the individuals who post the most in that zone will become members. some sort of government should be chosen, and debated should determine the most trustworthy users in the forum. The members of each zone will be able to vote on what type of government they want, and which members should apply for those positions.

Each major forum land's mass will start up with an apartment building, able to hold all members (and additional ones). Also, there will be a cemetery nearby that lists the members who posts there and never came back. If they do return, their corpse will arise from their grave.

Each major forum zone will provide special elements and tools indigenous to only their area. Figuring out how to use them properly could result in ICBM, poisoning water supplies. Tanks, Earthquake machines, etc etc. These elements and tools can be discovered by digging, combining, working together, and figuring out how everything comes together.

As you can probably tell, the game element of this is going to be based highly off Minecraft, especially when it comes to the PvP aspect of it. Initially your homerooms will be safe... but once people start putting together tools that can penetrate your walls, you'll either have to move, hide, or group up with somebody stronger than you.

People who are 100% griefer (ie, not advancing the cause of their own team, just PKing them nonstop) will be put into TIMEPROBATION. Its AWFUL.

Needless to say, we'd like to use something along the lines of Minecraft (but NOT Minecraft) to get this project rolling. First of all, I'd like to hear about questions or comments you might have about this idea. and then we'll go from there!

Thanks!!! Also, we would NOT like to run the Minecraft engine, so if there are any coders out there with experience and suggestions, it would be tremendously useful for us. If this looks possible, we will be interested in hiring 1 or 2 fulltime coders to come work for us! Either reply in this thread and / or PM me!

Is this real?

You have to get with the times and go full Hyperdimension Neptunia. Wargames don't sell, anime games do, and the more pandering the better. I mean, Wargames require you to think and compete. People don't want that in games anymore, they want to be catered to, they want to just be in charge of making the numbers go up and occasionally seeing girls in inappropriate sexual situations. It's like whenever I'm with my family they don't ever want to watch any movie that's too "thinky" or "depressing", because "life is hard enough", so they complain unless you just watch cgi cartoon movies or blockbusters like the marvel movies, it's the same here. Everyone knows goons are the smartest and it's stressful for them to have to prove it in a video game.
You have to make them all underdressed underaged anime girls, hire the least talented highest pitch voice actresses possible (and give them helium), and then it doesn't matter what the gently caress else you do. Just phone in the shittiest script with the cheapest jokes possible and put in out-of-place sexual references whereever possible (anime loves this poo poo because there's no other jokes in Japan beyond slapstick, puns, and hypersexuality. Have the women constantly take shots at each others boobs/lackofboobs and panties and stuff because that's what women do irl right) and take resources from other games. Rip a battle system off some other game and then that's all the gameplay you need, the rest can be dialog and drawings of the girls. Sure Hyperdimension Neptunia was largely panned as a completely shite game by... everyone... but goons still publicly admit to liking it in the current LP thread and some of them even get mad if you mock it there, so I'm sure they'd be happy to be represented in a totally creepy manner.
Don't worry about whether your portrayals of the forums have anything to do with the respective forums, anything you do can be passed as irony/parody. FYAD can be the submissive one that calls GBS master. GBS could be loved by everyone, everyone laughs at her jokes. PYF could quote TVTropes incessantly and know what game she's in. Yospos is a cattegirl. etc, etc, this poo poo writes itself. Get that Demon Rush guy to make it, he's made two great jrpgs already. Goons will love it.

I have a minecraft clone where the dynamic chunk creation and infinite world mechanics are working in a client/server. It is written in C#/XNA, and the base libraries are all under the MIT license. Could easily port to other things. It's pretty early on in it's development and is basically just a lump of featureless cube buildin' clay ready to be molded with ideas, so this project could grow it.

You don't get that one, but you get one very similar to it.

e: Full-time job opportunity at Awful Studios? I am dead serious about being considered for this. It intersects with a bunch of my career goals including programming a game full-time and making a block-builder game.
