Current New Update: Mecha Christmas Goon MvM Group Organization Thread is here: http://forums.somethingawful.com/sh...hreadid=3501591 ![]() “Okay, so I’m new here. What is all this?” Team Fortress 2 is a team-oriented, class-based FPS with a strong focus on working together to complete simple territorial objectives. Players pick one of nine classes and work with their team to secure capture points, push giant bomb carts or steal intelligence briefcases from the enemy team. It’s totally free to play forever, no-strings-attached. You can download it here. “That sounds like a lot of fun. What do these classes do? Which one should I pick?” Unlike many class- or job-based multiplayer games, you’re not required to pick one class and level it up. There is no stat-levelling and you can switch freely between the nine classes mid-game, depending on what your team needs. The nine classes are: • Scout +++ Pros: Has the fastest running speed, can double-jump, captures points twice as fast as other classes, deals very high burst damage at close range and can pick and choose his fights better than any other class. --- Cons: Very fragile. • Soldier +++ Pros: Fires powerful rockets that do lots of damage at close to mid range, has the second-highest max health of all the classes, performs a versatile rocketjump to reach high or distant places on-demand. --- Cons: Has the second-slowest movespeed of all the classes. • Pyro +++ Pros: Has a fair amount of health, does not need to reload his primary weapon, can deal lots of damage at close range to multiple enemies, is able to extinguish burning teammates and reflect an enemy’s projectiles back at him with an air blast. --- Cons: Limited damage outside of close range. • Demoman +++ Pros: Lots of health, can deal absurd amounts of damage with pipebombs or sticky mines, able to bounce explosives off or over walls and around corners, can plant remote minetraps that stick to walls and doorframes, performs a special bombjump to reach high or distant places quickly. --- Cons: Limited close-range defense. • Heavy +++ Pros: Has the most health of any class, deals lots of damage at close and mid range, does not need to reload his primary weapon. --- Cons: Slow, limited mobility. • Engineer +++ Pros: Able to build teleporters to move his team to a fight quickly, dispensers to keep them healed and supplied at the front line and sentry guns to keep the enemy out of certain areas. --- Cons: Needs to maintain buildings or they’ll be destroyed. • Medic +++ Pros: Heals other teammates, has regenerating health, is the second-fastest of all classes, can deploy “Übercharges” which make their patients and themselves invincible, deals crit damage or heals at a super-fast rate for a couple seconds. --- Cons: Limited offensive weapons. • Sniper +++ Pros: Can one-hit kill from a distance with a headshot, is able to pick off key players from the enemy line relatively unnoticed. --- Cons: Few options to defend yourself at close range, only loads one bullet at a time. • Spy +++ Pros: Has a number of gadgets that let him disguise as enemy players, turn invisible for a short time and disable engineer buildings, deals powerful bullet damage with his revolver, can one-hit kill up close with a successful backstab. --- Cons: Has no secondary backup weapon. If you’re new to the game and you want to learn the ropes the Soldier is a very forgiving class to learn and try the game out with, and you'll get a good feel for how the flow of combat works. It’s good to play all the classes and learn how they all work so you’re better able to fight against them as whichever class you’d like to play. “I played with the classes and I unlocked a weapon. What does that mean?” While you play the game occasionally new weapons will drop for you. In many multiplayer games a new weapon translates to an upgrade in equipment, but that isn’t the case with Team Fortress 2. New weapons either open up alternate playstyles or provide a benefit at the cost of a drawback, making them either sidegrades or situational downgrades. Almost all of the best weapons in the game are available as stock weapons for everyone to use. “What do these weapons do? Is there anything else I should know?” It’s worth your time to read through the Official Team Fortress 2 Wiki. It’ll tell you everything you need to know about game mechanics and item availability. It’ll also give you pretty pictures of all the fancy cosmetic hats you can wear in the game (you can wear hats). "People have weapons that level up now? What the heck is that all about??!!!" Those are Strange weapons! Newer series crates, instead of dropping junk weapons no one wants, have a chance of dropping "strange" versions of existing weapons, which are functionally identical except they track a certain stat (usually kills) and "level up" and change ranks when you reach certain milestones: http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Strange_ranks ![]() ![]() "I don't play Team Fortress 2 but people keep adding me on Steam asking for items from me. What's going on?!" ![]() ![]() ![]() Over the past five years TF2 has run cross-game item promotions where preordering a game will give you an item in TF2. Some of these promotional items (Max's Severed Head, Bill's Hat, Earbuds, Essential Accessories, Genuine Mauls) and "Unusual" hats (rare items with particle effects that come from opening Mann Co. Crates) are fairly valuable and traders will deliberately search out backpacks of players with rare items and very little gametime on TF2 with the intent of sharking the items out of their hands for a pittance and reselling them for big profit. If anyone adds you sight-unseen and talks to you about your items DO NOT GIVE THEM ANYTHING until you get a second opinion as to how much your items are really worth. Even if you never play TF2 some of the rarest items can fetch anywhere from $20 to several hundreds of dollars in real-life cash, not just videogame funbucks. If you are ever approached like this you are absolutely welcome and encouraged to post in this thread about what these people are asking for and what, if anything, they're offering. You can check a player's profile for scammer tags by plugging their SteamID into http://steamrep.com but sometimes they'll use clean accounts so this isn't always a failsafe. Our resident trade and market expert Captain Invictus offers appraisal, advisory and brokerage services to goons who find themselves in these sorts of positions. He has a thread in SA-Mart where you can find him: http://forums.somethingawful.com/sh...hreadid=3507625 he is very friendly and honest and will help you! Have fun! ![]() COMMON PROBLEM ZONE![]() "Every time I try and play TF2 Steam tries to verify game cache. It gets to 100% and reports no errors, but the game still won't load. What's going on?" Nothing is wrong! Just let it sit at 100% -- it's not actually done, steam is just stupid. Usually after 15-30 minutes, it'll actually finish and say 'all files successfully verified' or whatever and it'll let you launch. "I'm having a hard time telling if I'm hurting people or not. Is there any kind of feedback when I shoot someone?" Go to options>multiplayer>advanced and turn on hitsounds and damage indicators, and you'll be able to tell what's hitting AND how much damage it's doing! "I keep trying to shoot people and I miss most of my shots. Is there anything I can do to aim better?" Be patient! Don't hold your fire button down and hope your shots hit, take the extra half-second to line up your crosshairs and THEN click to fire. This seems like a no-brainer but it's a really common point most people don't consider, so it's worth saying. That extra half-second can feel like an eternity, but take it and line up your shots and your accuracy will greatly improve. ![]() This is the newest in a years-long string of threads. Demo Recorders Source Demo Recording Saver P-Rec Config Commands and Helpful Sites![]() ![]() How To Rule At A Videogame PLEASE NOTE: Below are a bunch of config commands you can use to fine-tune and customize your game. To use them, go to \Steam\steamapps\<your name>\Team Fortress 2\tf\cfg and either open or create "autoexec.cfg". If you don't already have this file, you can open Notepad or any other text editor, create a blank text document and "save as" autoexec.cfg. To create a .cfg file in notepad please make sure you change the Filetype dropdown from .txt to All Files, otherwise you'll create autoexec.cfg.txt and the game won't be able to read it. Class config files; scout.cfg, soldier.cfg, etc; are already present in the \cfg\ folder when you install the game. Any configs added to one of these files will load and apply only when you select that class, and any changes you make to one class will not be reverted when you switch out of that class unless every other class has a corresponding config. Example: if you put "cl_autoreload 0" in spy.cfg, load your game and pick Scout, your weapons will autoreload until you pick Spy, but if you don't put "cl_autoreload 1" in every other class config file when you switch out of Spy you won't auto reload anymore with any other class. Chris's Max FPS Configs are popular performance-enhancing configs if you're using an old computer or want to maximize your Frames Per Second. Comes in a variety of flavors. Note: If you're using Chris' Max FPS config and you experience graphic glitches where you have to enter the item menu twice before being able to use it and %NEMESIS% shows up in killcams, make sure and comment out this line in the config to code:TF2mate config generator (very useful): http://clugu.com/tf2mate/ Help fine-tune your mouse sensitivity with http://www.phoon.us/mouse/ tf_dingaling_pitchmaxdmg 5 tf_dingaling_pitchmindmg 150 -- add these to adjust the pitch of your in-game hit ding by how much damage you did. cl_showbackpackrarities 0/1 -- turns off/on colored item rarity outlines in your backpack. cl_autoreload 0/1 -- toggles autoreloading on and off bindtoggle [YOUR KEY HERE] "r_drawviewmodel" -- toggles viewmodels on and off when you press a key viewmodel_fov XX -- Adjusts the field of view of your viewmodels. Oh good, so the new Medigun really CAN let a Heavy survive a headshot. Thanks Valve, he needed that.Patch Notes posted:Added new Strange Filter items to the Mann Co. Store to support community map makers I'm glad they're at least trying to help support mapmakers. A hell of a lot more work goes into making a whole new map than a hat, and it always seemed like a bummer that they weren't repayed accordingly. In other news, Tour of Duty tickets are now going for MORE on the community marketplace than they do in the Mann Co. store...and they appear to still be selling.

OK so the new weapons can do: Rescue Ranger Using alt fire you can pick up buildings at range, but it uses metal. You can shoot at friendly buildings to repair them It has a 34% smaller clip 50% less ammo And when you pick buildings up you're marked for death like GRU does. Loose Cannon Fires cannonballs have a 2 second fuse, you can prime the fuse by holding down the fire key they'll explode sooner They push back players on impact They don't explode on impact. When they hit something they only do 50% damage. Vaccinator It lets you give you and your healing target 10% resistance to a selected damage type. With a 50% faster Ubercharge rate, and builds overheal 66% slower. It's uber ups that resistance to 75%, and you're healing 25% of the damage done to your healing target. Edit: Welp, beaten by the OP.

At least these new weapons aren't lazy designs. For the most part Valve's been doing a pretty good job coming up with new, interesting weapons that aren't just like the Liberty Launcher or Enforcer from last year (even if they aren't as powerful as the older weapons). Also, what are the damage types for the Vaccinator?

| # ? Dec 20, 2012 23:25 |

Rescue Ranger sounds fun, does "fires a special bolt" imply that it uses an arrow for a projectile like the Crusader's Crossbow?

Everybody on the server i was on just found a bunch of secret saxtons, some crates, and two or three other random drops at the same time. Presents!

| # ? Dec 20, 2012 23:26 |

The Festive Huntsman has a lightbulb on the arrow and the lightbulb stays on the arrow projectile even when sticking out of an enemy player. It's pretty cool but the whole "not all stranges" thing is still really miserly.
|
| # ? Dec 20, 2012 23:26 |
|
So if the Rescue Ranger uses standard ammo, you could plant your level 3 in some choke position, but stand back in a safe spot just healing it long-range while it's under fire, occasionally switching to Wranger for the shield, and if it's right about to die you just use the alt-fire to snag it at the last second. Wonderful.
|
| # ? Dec 20, 2012 23:26 |
|
Just from early view I suspect the Vaccinator will be a piece of poo poo, but I'll hold off on making that declaration final until I see how the 50% uber advantage plays out. The quick fix was way too strong with 50% charge bonus, too... Also, all the other unlocks look completely garbage. Ranged repairs and ranged grabs are the worst thing, I'm already imagining pairing that with the eureka effect to be a tremendous rear end in a top hat when an uber blows through.

Useful ones: Bullet damage Explosive damage Fire damage Situational ones: Self-damage Crit damage Useless ones: Fall damage Melee damage If crit damage is one of them, that means the earlier predictions were right: a Heavy will be mathematically unkillable by snipers while overhealed.

I'm interested in seeing the Vaccinator in real play instead of in MvM. You won't have nearly as many things shooting at you, so 75% damage reduction might be a lot more significant. Besides, it's got such a fast charge that if it's even remotely useful it'll be awesome as a rapid deployment medigun.
