I played the beta for this briefly before the servers crashed from everyone in the world trying to log into it at once. It was pretty fun, definitely got some nostalgia out of it. Killed a poring for the first time in 5 years, which I predict is something I will be doing once a decade for basically the rest of my life. Apparently the beta is slated to reopen on january 3rd due to the extreme amount of people logging into the servers the last time they tried it. Another thing that's worth mentioning is apparently a korean 'game portal' company got the original guy who did RO1 to make a new game, called Project R1, which you should spend some time googling if you haven't heard about it yet. There haven't been any news updates on it for a long time, but it's something to look forward to if you were a fan of the original.

All right. It's hat collecting time. This was the true hat game before TF2 and Dota 2 stole all the glory from the anime gem that is Ragnarok Online. I am ready to spend days hunting cards from mobs and MVPs. This is going to be amazing.

How much like this is RO1? I basically just want an updated RO1, with modern advancements and stuff. I played the original RO2 beta and it just didn't seem anything like RO1, except for the porings.

Except for when that person who made use of the useless mid-hat slot with a useless hat but also had MVP Cards such as Moonie Boots or a GTB Shield. They may also have a Ghostring armor which would literally render any non-elemental attack useless. Unlike WoW you couldn't determine what a person had on gearwise in RO and usually mid headgears were worthless in terms of stats or usefulness. Unless they had slotted sunnies then pray to god they didn't have a Maya card in them.

Yeah that was pretty great, the amount of time someone spends farming useless gear (sometimes!) is pretty similiar to the amount of time they'll spend farming actually good gear. Fortunately, the amount of people who had GTB or GR were in the single digits on every server combined, and word spreads pretty quickly. My favorite part of people who defaulted GTB/GR was using a non magical attack to freeze them and then having a monk casually walk over and asura them. I had a guy in my guild with Maya Sunglasses. For whatever reason, he used them on his priest! But I guess he never ran dry while safety wall/sanctuary spamming the emperium. I've also seen a few other MVP cards in sunglasses. Kiel was pretty awesome (-30% cast delay), and I used to party with a dude with osiris gloves(revive with full HP/SP). We'd take his max level champion to Skeggiolds and lex asura them, he'd die, I'd res him and he'd have full SP to kill the next one. I knew a guy who put a Dracula card (regain 15% of the damage you do as SP) into a Pole Axe and one shot turtles with spiral pierce for 4 hours at a time without ever having to stop, too. I really liked how certain cards/gear in Ragnarok let you radically change the way you play the game and open up entirely new possibilities in mob grinding, instead of just being a different mace with more sparkles and 200 more spell power, or whatever. I also liked how, with the right classes and skills, you could render almost any piece of gear (even GTB/GR!) completely useless.

One of the RO2 changes is that cards don't need to be put into items. You have 5 card slots, and any card you find gets put into an album so you can swap them around freely. And then there's the Khara system, which is basically stat-boosting titles tied to cheevos or events.

That was really what I loved about Ragnarok. I had a Ghostring as a Knight and I had kept it a secret until the day I decided to attack a castle that was held by a guild with a Champion who did nothing but spam Mastela Seeds and Asura Strike (Guillotine Fist). He wiped out a bunch of my guildmates and then he hit me with it and when I didn't die he did /omg and then I bashed him into the floor. Moments like that made the PvP of that game really fun and it felt absolutely fantastic when you were able to change the tide of a battle by just playing smart with gear swapping and learning which cards were the most useful with your builds. The one thing that I truly hated was upgrading gear. I swear I broke so many weapons and armors trying to get +6 or better on gear. When I got my first +10 pike it was like a dream come true.
|
| # ? Dec 29, 2012 00:09 |

The one thing I did like about upgrading gear was when you finally saw that One Dude with the +10 Guard of Deaf you were looking at literally 3000 hours, or more, of time spent on this item. Probably a LOT more hours in real time if you want to count the hour long respawn timer of the boss you're farming for a 0.01% drop chance. But, there's also that 0.01% chance that, no matter how lovely and nooby your guild is, you are instantly made relevant in the WoE scene and are playing with the Big Boys Now. I always liked hearing about people finding MVP cards, I can't imagine how happy they must have been, heh.

No soul linkers? gently caress this game. Beastmaster sounds cool though. And there better be thousands of hats to wear. One thing RO1 did that no other MMORPG really has done is have combat be really fast. Other games measure stuff in, say, seconds per attack, RO you can actually measure things in attacks per second (You could do up to 5 hits/sec!) I'll be a little sad to see that go.

I really hope this doesn't become another leveling nightmare like the 1st one. I remember getting to 99 the first time, then rebirthing and doing it all over again, except you needed 30% more exp, and then transcending AGAIN to an ultra-class that required such a mind-boggling amount of exp between levels that you begin to wonder what sane human being puts up with this poo poo. I only wish RO had made the jump to the Renewal System 5 years before they did. I love the stat overhaul and the fact that you couldn't just piss your way over to seals for mountains of exp, you were forced to kill poo poo in your level range.

I remember playing the Original RO in the first week of it's open beta. I remember logging in, seeing nothing, then seeing a billion people crammed onto a small starting island, where one bloody NPC would give you some stupid rear end test to determine what class he "Thinks you should be." The NPC was so click-spammed that the chance of actually getting his dialogue to appear was close to 0.01%, and when you did get it to appear, you would just get booted off the server and be forced to log back in. I think this is why "Log-in Queues" were invented. But it was an okay game...

Man, for its many, many faults, nothing beat Ragnarok Online in terms of explorability and not feeling like you were being railroaded from one place to the next. The speed of the combat was also really satisfying. I could go for something like that again.
