![]() Justified is a crime drama from the minds of Elmore Leonard (Out of Sight, Get Shorty, the novel Rum Punch which was adapted as Jackie Brown) and Graham Yost (Boomtown, Band of Brothers, From the Earth To the Moon). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_O08lFrffk The series takes place in modern day Kentucky, around Lexington and Harlan County, and is primarily concerned with two men. Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant, Deadwood, background) is a United States Marshal by title and a 19th-century lawman at heart; he wears a Stetson hat and is frighteningly quick with a handgun. His calm, collected exterior masks a tremendous amount of righteous rage toward himself and the world around him. As such, when violent criminals create problems, he tends to find violent solutions to them. On the other side of the law is Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins, The Shield, foreground), a charismatic crime lord who is undisputed King poo poo of Harlan County. Though Boyd is ruthless, he is by no stretch of the imagination a common thug. Boyd has a razor sharp intellect, a strong code of honor, and is empathic to degrees uncommon amongst kingpins. The two men, once brothers who worked in the Harlan mines together, are in constant conflict with each other, and yet at times seem to be morally allied to some degree. At the close of last season, Raylan and his ex-wife Winona (Natalie Zea) have separated (in a sense) for good, even as Winona prepares to have Raylan's first child. The split, while not mutually agreed upon (Winona left Raylan), is amicable; Raylan is now dating someone who works at the bar he's living out of. Meanwhile, Raylan's father Arlo (Raymond J. Barry) went down for murdering a cop (and a friend of Raylan's) who tried to arrest Boyd (whom Arlo was working for). Arlo is brought in, and takes the opportunity to confess to the murder, as well as several other crimes that Boyd was actually responsible for. That night, Raylan tells Winona that Arlo wasn't shooting at a cop per se: He just saw "a man in a hat" who had a gun pointed at Boyd. And on that somber note, we begin season 4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHfxHNutlWA While the show has made use of seasonal arcs in the past (to highly memorable effect), apparently this year promises to be a bit more episodic. No major guest stars have been announced to play "big bads" as in the past two years, although Patton Oswalt has been cast as a local cop who idolizes Raylan and gets to work with him on a case. Also, might as well mention that Natalie Zea will only be appearing in three episodes this season, partly because she was cast in the new Fox thriller The Following. The first three episode titles, as per Wikipedia: "Hole in the Wall," "Where's Waldo?", and "Truth or Consequences". Season 4 kicks off on TUESDAY, JANUARY 8TH AT 10 PM ET.

Good OP, though I would disagree to an extent on the "Raylan Rage." part. Yeah, it's there, but not to the amount it was in his portrayal of Seth Bullock. Raylan tempers his rage with a healthy dose of dry, self depreciating humor. He's also modern enough to acknowledge his feelings and to know bottling them up is bad--even if he still would find most modern methods of properly dealing with them a bunch of hooey. Raylan also has a strong sense of justice like Seth, a moral sense of right and wrong which guides him. But whereas Seth could be very "Judge Dredd" and inflexible, Raylan, who grew up with these characters in Harlan and whose father was a criminal, is much more mellow. He's more likely to look the other way with certain petty things in order to work the big picture. The idea of letting an informant get away with petty crimes to keep an ear to the ground for you would be alien and wrong to a 19th Century bible reading lawman like Seth.

"Next one's comin' faster" remains one of the most badass lines in the history of anything ever. Really excited to see who comes back, and what state they're in. Hell, I'll take a minute of Quarles with a prosthetic.

I dunno if I like the fact there's no season long bad guy. The show was most enjoyable watching Mags Bennett plans go off and just showing how drat devious she was, before getting outplayed by Boyd. Then, watching the fall of Quarells too.

Been waiting all year for this. I really feel like the lack of an announced major guest star is less an indication that the show will be super episodic and more than they're going to focus more on Boyd. Take Boyd's story as a whole. Season 1, he's a petty criminal, blowing up poo poo and robbing banks, loving around out in the woods, and living in his father's shadow. Season 2 is him wrestling with being out of the game, earning an honest living, and feeling and ultimately succumbing to the pull to return to crime, but on HIS terms - setting up Mags and then remaining standing when the dust settles. Season 3? Now he's putting together his own crew. Growing pains, sure - the weed that ended up being trash, Arlo ending up as more of a liability than an asset (though he proves his worth in the end), Devil trying to doublecross him, and though he doesn't know it yet, Johnny working against him. To me, Boyd seems primed to take off in Season 4. If anything, he's had a more dynamic trajectory than Raylan from the beginning til now. I think it goes without saying that the writers are more than capable of crafting a season-long arc centered around Boyd considering what they already did with Mags and Quarles. All that said, I also look forward to some episodic stuff too. Justified's at its best when it mixes the two. Holding out hope for more Dickie, too.

I really, really hate Mags Bennett. What an incredible character. I think the most incredible part about her is how much people fall for sympathizing for her. She's the devil incarnate but people will actually feel bad for a woman who killed a young girl's father just so she could pretend to raise her. Brad Henke I feel deserves more credit for his character.

Guys I was super excited about this show when it first came out. I love Elmore Leonard Westerns so bad and I thought the pilot was the best example of adapting previous works for the screen in terms of replicating the feeling of a Leonard story. Then I watched the next handful of episodes and just didn't like the show, it felt in places like it was a USA procedural. Was I wrong? Should I try to start the show from another point? Because it seems to me like Justified got a whole lot more bad rear end every time I hear someone talking about it.

First few episodes of the show are definitely the weakest stretch. Power through or try Season 2 before you give up for good.

I felt the same way. I think most people do. (It's also why I'm kind of leery about the more episodic format they've been discussing for season four). But that aside, you really want to keep watching. The back half of the first season gets stronger per episode, the finale is fantastic, and the show finds its stride in season two with the introduction of the Bennetts. Margo Martindale knocks it out of the park as Mags (her Emmy was entirely deserved), and the story, with the exception of one or two episodes, is season-long. Keep at it. You won't regret watching it.

Think of the first season as groundwork; enjoy the USA procedural aspect of it, take note of how they're establishing the culture of Harlan County, the histories of Raylan and Boyd, and the baseline for an average day at the Marshall's office, while the season arc develops waaaaay in the background. For the season finale, they tie it all together with an amazing sequence and close out the season with a final shot that is utterly iconic. When you start season 2, you'll meet Mags Bennett. That's when everything goes to the best possible hell.

For me I think my favorite scene is in the pilot when Boyd's thugs ambush Art, Tim and Rachel. Any other show, Raylan would have to save their rear end, being the hero. But nope. The entire team is just as badass. From "Kill or wing em?" To Rachel popping up with two guns it was awesome

The 3rd or 4th episode in the 1st season where Raylan has to save that chocolate egg cream drinking informant from the gardner who is obsessed with having a Western-style duel with Raylan is a tremendously weak and lovely episode, and probably is the place where a lot of new viewers stop.
