I used to work as a "data technician" apprentice, which is a fancy way to say that I used to run cables through tight, dirty, hot spaces for minimum wage. In early 2007 my boss and I where working on the roof of a doctors surgery, we had partly taken the roof off of a section to run cables underneath. As I was putting the final screw in, the awkward pose I'd taken to do so meant that most of my weight was on one knee. Knees being knees, it dislocated and I fell backwards through a skylight. Since that day, I've done poo poo all physical exercise, and considering I've worked the past four years as a computer programmer, my body looks like it. So, how about some stats? Well, I'm 170cm (5'7") tall and weigh 106kg (233lbs). I've weighed the same for more than two years now, to fix this I plan on walking and running. I actually love running, and despite being as large as I am can still sprint quite fast, if only for very short distances. At the moment I don't have a drivers license, but as I only live 5km (3.1 miles) from work that's not such a problem. What I'm going to start doing is walking home from work every night; this will save me money, but also get me ready for a more serious challenge. So, my goal is to loose 5kg (11lbs) by 28th February 2013. There will be no smiling in my photos: ![]() Now, what's a good iPhone app for measuring walks? Edit: Just completed my "Day 0" walk, 3.9km (2.4 miles) in 43 minutes. It felt good, but I know the longer walk home is going to hurt. Sure, to give you some idea of what an average day is like: - Breakfast, eating before lunch makes me feel ill; if I eat anything it'll be cornflakes, but definitely an ice coffee. - Lunch, a chicken foot long at subway, with sauce, without salt and pepper. Usually with a 600ml soft drink (soda). - Dinner, uh... canned soup? Sometimes a pizza or a curry, sometimes just coffee. So yeah... eat like poo poo, look like poo poo. Since I've gone for a walk this morning, I'm going to go to a little down the road café and see what's good on the breakfast menu. The biggest problem I have with breakfast, is breakfast foods. I cannot stand eggs, sausages and bacon; or fish, but that's not really a breakfast thing.

Check out Intermittent Fasting. Turns out it's actually totally cool to skip breakfast, as long as you do it consistently.

I'm not sure skipping breakfast is the best idea for me, as the iced coffee takes place of a decent breakfast. I'd be more inclined to skip dinner instead. So, I just went to that cafe and had an amazing breakfast: 3 corn fritters served with a slice of lemon, a slice of avocado and some greens. As I don't like normal breakfast foods, this seems ideal. I hope it's not cooked in something terrible :S

Day 1 - 3.5km (2.1 miles) walk in 37 minutes. - 1 500ml Dare Iced Coffee, Espresso. 426 calories. - 3.3km (2.0 miles) walk in 37 minutes. That hill is a mother fucker. - 3 corn fritters with avocado and lemon. Same as yesterday. - 1 can of tomato soup, with milk. I hosed up today; I've got an eye infection, laid down at lunch to give my eyes a rest, woke up after the shops closed. Missed lunch, didn't drink enough water, and was warned about being not eating enough calories. Oh, and I've got a profile on myfitnesspal. You're only supposed to drink black coffee right? I'm talking about iced coffee, which has a good number of calories in it. I'm thinking I could take this recipe and add: - Chickpeas in the fritter - Avocado and lemon topping Not so keen on meaty breakfasts, and this is the only tolerable form of egg I've found. It sounds tasty :S

Starting a log is good, but it doesn't seem like you're willing to make any compromises. "Going for a walk" seems to be your entire plan, and it is not going to net major results.

If you make them at home, you'll be able to track the calories and nutrients. BTW it's very much worth tracking not just the calories but the macronutrients - protein, carbs and fats - in what you eat. Sign up for something like myfitnesspal to make this easier.

Mmm, the thing is I've not done any regular exercise for so long that walking is really all I'm comfortable doing. I'm also weary of doing anything higher impact because, although my knee has been fine these past five years, considering the kind of shape I'm in it could definitely happen again. So, let me build up a little bit of stamina before for the next couple of months, before making any more plans. I am also working on my diet, finding something healthy I can enjoy for breakfast is vital if I'm going to ditch the iced coffee.

Daily calorie goals is probably the best place to start. If you won't be doing a ton of cardio, you're going to need to eat even less. You could also consider something a bit easier on the knees: swimming, biking, rowing, elliptical, etc. depending on what you find fun. Looking forward to seeing progress

Cheers, I live only a couple of blocks from a gym, so once I'm feeling a little more fit I'll look into membership and getting a personal trainer. A bike would be nice, once some debt is paid off

Day ??? It's been a good week, I've logged my food each day and I've lost 3.1kg (6.8lbs), although I'm actually measuring from my first weigh in on day 1 which was 104kg; that makes for a loss of 1.1kg (2.4lbs). I've met all of my obligations except for walking, as it turns out I walked so much the skin on my thighs rashed up quite badly. I'm not sure how to solve that, so I let up for a couple of days. I've solved the iced coffee problem for now by using it as milk on my cornflakes; it doesn't taste bad at all.

Day Something Hi everyone, I know I've not exactly kept up my logs, but since my toxx is approaching I figured I'd better update anyway. I'm currently down to 97.5kg, so either way you measure it I've exceeded my goal. And I'm still using iced coffee in my cornflakes, and large size shirts now fit.
