The earth shall turn to Ash. [FATE Core + Pokemon Homebrew] Alright, so, last time there was a Pokemon-based recruitment, there were a lot of applications showing that there's a bit of demand for a game like that. Problem is I'm not a big fan of the Pokemon: Tabletop Adventures system, but I absolutely love FATE. So I kind of crafted this system by smashing together FATE Core and a little bit of the Dresden Files RPG. So this will technically be an Alpha playtest. Being familiar with this system isn't a requirement, since I'm butchering it out of three different game systems. Talk to me if you're confused by anything. This game will be taking place in the Altia Region, which is somewhere east of Shelbyville and south of Capital City. Point is, where it is doesn't matter, just that it's set twenty minutes into the future of a fantasy Japan where animals can use superpowers and humans capture them in tiny metal spheres. As part of this, we're going to be creating this region from scratch. When you apply your character, please make up some random detail of Altia that we can incorporate into the game. Whether your app gets accepted or not, your detail will probably make it through, so make it something not only you want to play with/against, but something fun for others as well. For this game you will create a character that is your Trainer, and you will create that character's two Starting Pokemon using some very loose rules that are similar to character creation. At some point in the future I may give you possibly a third Pokemon, but for now let's just take two. Character Creation As for your character, follow basic FATE Core instructions, but there will be some differences. Aspects: 1) High Concept: Replaced by Trainer's Goal. Pokemon is a Coming of Age kind of story, so you haven't quite achieved your High Concept yet. Replace this Aspect with what your greatest goal is, whether it's to “Be a Pokemon Master” or “Take over my Sister's Gym” or even “Gentle Pokemon Breeder.” 2) Trouble: Yup, still in place. Probably a character flaw like “Always a Step (or Seven) Behind,” or “Can't resist a pretty face,” or maybe it's just a recurring issue like “That brat broke my bike!” Like all Aspects this can have some good and bad parts to it, but if it's your Trouble, I will milk the bad parts for all the Compels I can get out of it. 3) First Adventure: Shortly after receiving your first Pokemon you left your home saying goodbye to your mother with nothing but a tiny backpack full of camping gear, and the Pokemon on your shoulder. Maybe you got stupid and tried to catch a Spearow with rocks and got an entire flock angry at you. What happened, and how did your Pokemon help out? This Aspect is going to be directly related to your Starter Pokemon, and will help define your relationship with them, but can still say something about you. 4 & 5) First And Second Guest Stars: Leave your First Adventure open ended so that other characters can fit in and help you out. One of these Aspects should relate to your Second Pokemon, because you probably caught them along the way. The other Aspect should relate back to you. Maybe your dad's a gym leader and some of his lessons stuck when a friend needed it most. Try to flesh out your character a little more. I may add more Aspects later on, but I think 5 should be enough for a trainer. Skills You will start with the standard 20 skill point pyramid. Meaning you have 1 skill at +4, 2 skills at +3, 3 skills at +2 and 4 skills at +1. These are what you've got. • Athletics • Burglary • Contacts • Crafts • Deceit • Empathy • Fighting – Brandishing a lethal weapon is illegal, keep this in mind. If you want to use a weapon, maybe you're some samurai descendant and carry around a bokken and fight alongside your Pokemon. You'd also be considered really weird by other Trainers. • Intimidation • Investigation • Lore • Notice • Physique • Rapport • Resources • Stealth • Will Stunts?: Yeah, you can still take stunts. You have starting Refresh of 4, and each Stunt reduces it by one, giving you less Fate Points to play with. But on the other hand, you have extra bonuses no one else has. Since there's more stats at play here, if you want to have a Trainer take a Stunt that interacts with his Pokemon's Bond, Skills, or Moves, let me know and I'll try to find a way to make it work. Pokemon Creation Hoo boy, here we go. You can pick from any Pokemon up to the Unova generation, as long as it is... A: Non-Legendary. Sorry kids, no pokegods for you. B: In it's 1st form or baby form. So no starting with a Pidgeotto, just a Pidgey. C: Not a typical starter pokemon. This means none of the standard Grass-Fire-Water starters, as well as no Pikachu and Eevee because those are technically Starters as well. You can catch them later on, just not now. D: Not a silly Gimmick Pokemon like Unown. Mostly because statting those out are going to be a pain. Don't worry, there are tons of Pokemon out there. I just want you to be a little original and give some of the lesser known guys a shot. Aspects: 1) High Concept: A Pokemon's High Concept has to include their breed, and maybe another word of description if you can make it fit, like “Rebellious Pikachu” or “Angry Primeape.” 2) Nature: There are 25 Natures in the Pokemon games. Pick any one (or roll randomly) and turn it into an Aspect. Give your Pokemon some personality! 3) First Adventure: Remember that Aspect that was related to this Pokemon during Trainer creation? It goes both ways, and make an Aspect of how the Pokemon relates to the Trainer. I may add more later on, but I think 3 is enough for a Pokemon. Skills: Pokemon will start with a • Attack – Use to Attack in combat. • Special Attack – Use to Attack in combat. • Defense – Use to Block in combat. • Special Defense – Use to Block in combat. • Speed – Used for combat Initiative, battlefield movement, and pure dodging. • Cool – Used for social Attacks, like Intimidation or Deceit. • Beauty – Used for social Defense, like Rapport. • Tough – Used for physical actions that are not directly combat related. Gives +1 mild consequence at +3. • Smart – Used for Inveistgation or Notice. Also determines the number of Moves a Pokemon knows. Pokemon know 1 move + 1 for each point in Smart. • Cute – Used for social Initiative, and may be used like Empathy. • HP – Used to determine HP stress. Pokemon start with 3 Stress and gain an extra box for each point in HP. • PP – Used to determine PP stress. Pokemon start with 3 Stress and gain an extra box for each point in PP. Basically, it works like this. Attack: Use Attack or Special Attack for physical combat. Probably Cool for social combat. Block: Use Defense or Special Defense for physical combat. Probably Beauty for social combat. Create Advantage: Really any of them, but the five Contest stats will be used for this in physical combat. Overcome Obstacles: Again, any of the, but the Contest stats will be more likely to help here. What is social combat? Well, sometimes the best way to deal with a Wild Pokemon is to calm it down rather than beat it to a pulp. Wild Pokemon don't pay attention to humans, but pay attention to other Pokemon. If you have all 12 skills on your skill tree/ladder/pyramid/whatever, then your lowest rank is considered full so you can start upgrading the rest without worrying about that. Basically, if you have all 12 skills, you can start upgrading to +2 without worrying about having enough +1's to support it. Then when you have all +2's and no +1's, you can start upgrading to +3 without worrying about +2 supports. Moves: Hooooo boy this is going to be rough. Moves are basically Spells from the Dresden Files, inflicting stress equal to the Move's Power, Controlled with Bond, and Aimed with Attack or Special Attack (For status-based moves, use the relevant Contest Stat). However, a Pokemon's Learned Moves are like Rotes, and don't need to be Controlled. Better yet, they can be a little more complicated, using a little bit of Attack, Block and Create Advantage together. I'll explain these later on in my battle mechanics megapost. Here, have some templates. quote:Trainer Name: Name quote:Pokemon Nickname: Name Krysmphoenix fucked around with this message at Dec 31, 2012 around 19:53 |

Altia Region Hey, let's define this a little bit! The Altia region only has four badges to participate in it's Pokemon League. Mostly because I don't want to be doing that for forever and do want to have a clear end-goal for this game. ![]() This is by no means complete. Feel free to add more islands, roads, towns, landmarks, ect. 1) Starting Town, sets theme for other town names. Home of the the PCs and their mothers (Fathers? Siblings?). Home of Professor Palm's lab, who researches (???) with relation to Pokemon. 2) First City. Gym: Leader (???) uses (???) themed Pokemon. Need to do X before we take on the Gym. Can't fight this Leader first. 3) Second City. Gym: Leader (???) uses (???) themed Pokemon. Gym is open from the start. Team Rocket Activity? 4) Third City. Gym: Leader (???) uses (???) themed Pokemon. Need to do X before we take on the Gym. Simple side-quest. Metropolis! Has the Pokemon Department Store! 5) Fourth City. Gym: Leader (???) uses Monkey themed Pokemon. Team Rocket Activity? Need to take care of Team ??? before using Gym. Meet Leader there? Has Safari Zone. A, B, C, D, E) Towns? Landmarks? What important stuff is around just on it's own? Do they have Team Rocket Activity? Is there someone noteworthy there? A) B) C) TM Factory? D) Port Town! Return of the S.S. Anne? E) Makeshift "Pokemon League Village." 11 - 20) Routes? What paths connect the cities and towns? Are they open fields? Forests? Caves? Water? Desert? Volcanoes? Boiling Volcano Desert Forest Caves? 11) Goes over water, take a boat? 12) Mountain/Cave? 13) Mountain/Cave? 14) Lake? 15) Lake? 16) Volcano? 17) Volcano? 18) Jungle (Monkey Pokemon) 19) 20) VR) Victory Road Team Rocket Team Rocket. What do they want? Under New Management! Who leads them? Which two (or more) recurring idiots named after which Wild West villains do we keep running into? Pokemon League Going to do this Anime style, where the Pokemon League is a giant tournament, rather than just fighting the Elite Four. Any and all NPCs we meet/create on the way will probably appear here again! It's a big event, not just for battling. Pokemon Contests will be a big factor of it too. Not to mention Gym Leaders trying to get re-certified each year. And it's televised across the Region. Expect lots of phone calls from you mother excited she saw you on TV. And then later tells you she spent some of your saved money on a cute Pikachu doll. Krysmphoenix fucked around with this message at Dec 31, 2012 around 20:04 |

Battle Mechanics! Alright, this is going to be complex, but I'm going to try to streamline it a little bit. Moves There are two kinds of Moves, Improvised and Learned. Improvised Moves are made up on the spot and require communication between the Trainer and Pokemon to use correctly. Learned have more complex effects, but are performed the same way every time. For all Moves, there are three parts to it. Building up Power, and then Controlling it, and finally Aiming it. Power: Building up Power inflicts PP Stress on the Pokemon. You may choose how many points of Power to build up, and take an instant stress-hit equal to that amount. So if you choose to build up three shifts of Power, you mark off your third stress box. If that box is filled, it rolls up to the next one. (You may take Consequences to reduce this hit equal to the level of the Consequence, or Invoke Aspects to reduce the hit by two.) Learned Moves always have the same level of Power, so you always have to choose the exact Power of the Learned Move. Control: Now you have the Power, you must Control it. For Improvised Moves, you make a Control roll by simply Bond as if it were a Skill. If this roll is greater than or equal to the Power, you perform the Move normally. If it is less, you have two options. You may Under-perform, and reduce the Power equal to what you just rolled for Bond. Or you may Over-exert, and take an additional stress-hit equal to what you failed the roll by, but you keep the same level of Power. (Again, you may take Consequences or Invoke Aspects to reduce the hit.) Learned Moves completely skip this step, so you don't need to worry. You did your training beforehand, and your Pokemon knows how to Control this technique properly. If the Power for the Move is 0 (or 1 with STAB), you also do not need to roll Control. The Move is so basic you cannot fail it. Aim: You're ready to go, now time to Aim at someone you don't like. Depending on the Move you make, this will usually be either an Attack or Create Advantage. You roll your Pokemon's relevant Skill against what the defending Pokemon Blocks with. (Both sides may Invoke Aspects to increase their rolls for this step.) If the attacker succeeds or is equal, they get to add their Power to this roll for extra effect. Example: If you have Attack with a Power 3 Improvised Move, succeed your Control roll, and roll a 4 on your Aim, but your opponent rolls a 3 on their Block, you succeed and inflict 1 shift for the difference in the rolls, plus 3 more for the Power giving you a total of a 4-shift hit. Example: Same situation as above, but you decided to Create an Advantage instead. You succeed by 4 shifts, meaning you succeed with style and create an Aspect with two free Invokes, even though you only won by one point. Other Factors Same Type Attack Bonus: STAB If a Pokemon perform a move, Improvised or Learned, that is the same type as the Pokemon's primary or secondary type, when declaring Shifts for Power, the stress inflicted on the Pokemon is reduced by 1, to a minimum of zero. Also, that Pokemon gains a +1 bonus to the Bond roll for Control. It's super-effective! If a move is Super-Effective (consult your standard Pokemon type chart), the Move gains an additional two shifts when adding Power. You only gain these shifts only if you succeed on the Aim roll vs Block. You have to hit first in order to be super effective. It's not very effective... On the other side, if a move is Not Very Effective (consult the same chart), the defender gains two shifts when adding Power. The defender only gains these shifts if they lose their Block roll vs Aim. It has to hit in order to not be very effective. Any attacks from Pokemon against Humans are considered to be Not Very Effective by default. Deliberately using your Pokemon to attack another Human is usually considered a crime, so please settle your differences with your Pokemon and accept defeat gracefully. Selecting Type When selecting the Type for an Improvised or Learned move, consider what moves the Pokemon learns normally. Any move they can learn normally through leveling up is legitimate for a Learned move. If they can learn it through Tutoring or a TM/HM, then I may require some plot sacrificing, or at the very least a Resources roll since your teaching the Pokemon something outside their normal range. For Improvised Moves on the other hand, you're pretty much limited to just setting the types to those equal to your Pokemon's type (which isn't bad, you get STAB by default this way). Although if your Pokemon learns a few Fighting moves despite not being Fighting type, I'll allow the occasional Fighting Improvised Move to make it work, just as an example. Most Pokemon learn low-power Normal moves too, so those are likely available to everyone. In both cases, I'll probably say to work with Bulbapedia to let me know what the Pokemon is capable of. I'm going to be referencing that a lot, because it knows more about Pokemon than I do, and there's a lot to know about Pokemon. A ton lot more. Trainer vs. Trainer This assumes a battle between 2 Trainers, 1 Pokemon at a time. Initiative is declared by the individual Pokemon's Speed stat. Trainers are assumed to delay their actions to match their Pokemon's. (If for some reason the Trainer is directly participating in the battle, their Initiative is based on Notice.) Both the Trainer and the Pokemon get their own action. The Trainer usually only takes Overcome Obstacle or Create Advantage type actions using any of their available Skills. If the Trainer chooses to Give Orders to the Pokemon, this is considered a kind of Create Advantage that does not require a roll but only creates a single Boost which if not used will go away at the start of their next turn. It does not create a long-lasting Aspect for other Trainers or Pokemon to interact with. The Pokemon may perform an Improvised Move or a Learned Move to either Attack, Block, Create an Advantage, or Overcome an Obstacle. If the Pokemon has a Boost, they may apply it to Power, Control or Aim, but only one of them. Or again they may hold on to that Boost to help with Reflexive Blocks against incoming attacks. When a Pokemon faints, the battle ends. The battle restarts if the losing Trainer sends out a new Pokemon, restarting Initiative as if a new round started. The victorious Pokemon may be swapped out at this time if the Trainer so chooses. Trainers vs Trainers This assumes a battle between multiple trainers, 1 Pokemon each. Everything is handled as normal just now there are multiple Pokemon and Trainers in the mix. Like tag-team battles, every still gets to perform an action. Zone Attacks, Spray Attacks and battlefield movement become more important. If a Pokemon faints, that Trainer gets to send out a new Pokemon to replace them when the new round begins. If the Trainer has no more Pokemon to send out, they may still assist with Overcoming Obstacles or Creating Advantages for the other Pokemon on their side. They may not Give Orders to Pokemon they do not own. Trainer vs Trainer, multiple Pokemon. This assumes a battle between two Trainers, each using multiple Pokemon. Each Trainer's focus is split between any and all Pokemon they have on the field. They can only Give Orders to one Pokemon at a time, but if they Create an Advantage, the free invokes may be split among all of their Pokemon as they see fit. Again, if a Pokemon faints, a new one may be sent out at the beginning of the new round. Trainer vs Wild Pokemon There are no set rules for battles against Wild Pokemon, and the Trainer may use as many Pokemon as they want. Likewise, there is nothing stopping Wild Pokemon from swarming a Trainer in large groups. Wild Pokemon, however, are at a disadvantage. They have no Trainers to give them Boosts or Free Invokes and must do everything themselves. Instead of Bond, they have Willpower which gets reduced by 1 every time they receive a hit. If a Trainer's Pokemon faints, however, the Wild Pokemon will not wait for a new one to be sent out. The Trainer must spend their next turn to send out a new Pokemon they own. If the Trainer delays or isn't fast enough, the Wild Pokemon may directly attack the Trainer. Catching Wild Pokemon As a Wild Pokemon's Willpower is reduced, they also lose the ability to resist Pokeballs. Throwing the Pokeball is a special kind of Attack for the Trainer, rolling the Pokeball's Chance against the Wild Pokemon's Willpower. Invokes may be used on both sides for this contested roll as per normal. Pokeball – Chance 2, Resources Great Ball – Chance 3, Resources 3. Ultra Ball – Chance 4, Resources 5. Master Ball – Chance ??, may only be given by the GM to a Trainer. Special Pokeballs may exist, and may be made using Craft provided they have appropriate Apricorns. These homemade Pokeballs may have special effects. Krysmphoenix fucked around with this message at Jan 2, 2013 around 21:17 |

I'm thinking i'll stop recruitment on Saturday, January 12th of 2013. Don't worry, FATE is really easy to get into, and I only made it slightly more complex. I'm completely willing to help people out with this. Really for this part is just coming up with a basic idea (What is your character like? Who is their family?) and making Aspects out of them. Okay, and selecting Skills too but that's easy.

What about pseudo-legendaries (like Larvitar) and one and done evolutionary lines (like Tauros or Ditto)?

No evolution Pokemon are more than fine, and are probably going to be helpful (considering I don't know how to handle Evolution yet!) Well, considering the Pseudo-legendary was established for non-legendary Pokemon that are as strong as legendary Pokemon, I'm not too worried. This system puts all Pokemon on a pretty level playing field. However, I am a little concerned about people taking the rarest Pokemon they can think of and making that their starter. EDIT: Ditto might be...hmm. If you want a Ditto, I can make it work.

Still blanking on the background for my trainer but I've got some good ideas for world building. 1: As islanders, clearly we have Prof. Palm. 2: City #3 is the big capital city with the multilevel pokemart and TMs and stuff. I've always liked the color theme for citynames but I'm open to other stuff. Maybe make them elemental-ish? (Flame City, Surf City, Storm City etc) 3: Let's go Old School and use Team Rocket. They're rebuilding under new leadership after... Whatever the last time we saw them was. (I want to say the Mewtwo fiasco?) 4: Rather than "type-based" gyms, how about theme-based? One gym could have all the monkey-based pokemon (Mankey/Primeape, the Simi/Pan lines, Ai/Ambipom etc) That would make sure no one gets a gym full of bad matchups. 5: RIVALS! We need a rival crew to run into and beat up occasionally and have a showdown with at the end. 6: Geography! Need some caves/mountains (full of zubats) between 1 and 2 for sure. Maybe a big lake full of cool pokemon between 2 and 3. Some kinda volcano between 3 and 4.

Apparently they are still around in the Black and White anime, but I stopped watching that when they hit the Orange Islands. We'll just say this is a few years past whatever the other games are in the timeline if there is one. Also, what was Team Rocket's goal anyway? 4: I love this idea. Themes it is. 5: This was kind of my intention from the start, although less Ash vs Gary kind of Rivals and more "Hey, we're friends but against each other in the same tournament" kind of deal. 6: I'll doodle some roads in and mark those. I'm thinking we should have smaller towns or landmarks in between the cities as well. So between 1 and 2 it would be City 1, Cave, Town/Landmark, Some other Terrain (or open road), City 2. jivjov posted:EDIT: While I'm thinking about it, what day/time were you thinking of running sessions? ^^^ Where do you want the Jungle and Monkey Gym? Major change to mechanics!Okay, the 10 point Skill Pyramid for Pokemon is extremely limiting. Let's fix things up a little. You can now go to 20 points for the Pokemon, up to +4. However, there are still only 12 Pokemon Skills to the Human's 16-18 whatever. So here's another house rule. So if you have all 12 skills on your skill tree/ladder/pyramid/whatever, then your lowest rank is considered full so you can start upgrading the rest without worrying about that. Basically, if you have all 12 skills, you can start upgrading to +2 without worrying about having enough +1's to support it. How about city number 5 for the monkey gym city with the jungle surrounding it? [Jungle City] is set on the shore, with the jungle area at its back. The houses and other buildings are stilted and fairly primitive looking, but are actually pretty comfortable. The gym's run by Homer (a wordplay on hominid), a sort of Tarzan type who is said to have been lost in the jungle when he was a baby and raised by the Pokémon there until he was old enough to return to society. He specializes in monkey-like Pokémon such as Primeape, Ambipom and Infernape but other jungle-native Pokémon might also be found in his gym. The gym itself is series of tree-houses, with lots of vine swinging and battle in the tree tops where light, nimble Pokémon excel. When the PCs get to [Jungle City], Homer is off in the jungle, tracking some team-rocket Poké-poachers who are mass-catching Pokémon to either give to their grunts or some type of Slowpoketail-like racket. EDIT: Making the Safari Zone its own island sounds like a great idea, too.

I think City #1 should be called Maroonville. You see, because people got shipwrecked there (and also color coded!). The name doesn't really jive with Jungle City, though. As part of my character's background, I'm also throwing in a ship graveyard/cove area on the southern end of the isle. The back story being a group of ne'er-do-wells intentionally crashed ships there utilizing a fake lighthouse in order to loot ships and capture sailors. A good place to go on dares/find ghost pokemon/locate a secret base.

Jungle City is just a placeholder name, since we haven't established a naming convention yet. I was thinking maybe naming all the towns after sea shells (Conch City, Scallop Town, Sanddollarton) keeping with the island theme, but maybe just sticking with colors is the best way to go.

OK First pass at some Char-gen, subject to change and feedback and such things: (Trainer maker is here and has a lot of nice options.) ![]() Name: Misty Riker Age/Gender: Female, 13 ID #: 780146 Trainer's Goal: Discover a New Pokemon Species! Invokes: At home in the wilderness, good at approaching wild pokemon, good at tracking Compels: Excitable and nerdy when talking about unfamiliar pokemon, easily distracted by potential new pokemon Trouble: No Sense of Direction Compels: It's not that she get's lost, she just forgets where she is! Honest! First Adventure: A "Fearless" Explorer Invokes: To be curious and inquisitive! Willing to take on any challenge! Exploring! Compels: To get into troublesome situations, to take dares and bets, to get stuck in messes of her own making There was one place on the island that none of the kids were allowed to go, and that was the old empty cabin in the woods. There used to be a kind old man who lived there, but he died a long time ago. Now the place was a haunting ground for dangerous ghost pokemon. Misty followed the rules all the way up to her 13th birthday. She was bragging about growing up to be a famous explorer. One of the boys just laughed at her and said if she couldn't even go to the cabin at night she'd never be an explorer. So that's exactly where she went. It was scary, but Misty was undaunted... for a little while. The wild ghost pokemon found her and chased her, and she dropped her flashlight. She couldn't find her way home in the dark. But then a Litwick's purple flame appeared. The candle pokemon was waving to her, trying to get her attention. More curious than scared, she followed it, and it led her to a dusty shelf in the back room of the cabin. There was a very old looking red pokeball sitting there, just waiting. Misty picked it up, and clicked the button. A small blue and black Shinx blinked at her twice then looked around, as if confused. It rushed through the cabin, calling for someone, then padded slowly back to her. The Litwick suddenly vanished, just as the other wild ghosts caught up to them. Misty and Shinx were in a real spot when... Jeffery's Guest Star: High Expectations Misty was walking home on a trail that led through the woods from her house to the Pokemon Shop in town when she ran into a boy and his Doduo. He seemed quite lost. She soon found out he was new to the island and he'd just found his pokemon, who'd run off to help some Marril. It was already getting dark and Misty could tell Jeffery just wanted to go home. Misty knew where his house was, (she knew where everyone's house was, especially everyone new!) and led him back to the main path and down another side trail. It was dark out but Nyx's tail glowed softly and between that and the stars they had plenty of light to see. But late night paths can be scary. There were all sorts of night pokemon on the island, and even the soft whisper of the leaves in the trees sounded sinister. It was even more scary when a chorus of barks and howls broke out just a little ways up the path. Misty and Nyx charged ahead, and nearly tripped over a very sick Poochyena. She was all curled up in a ball, panting with a high fever. Nyx growled a warning, and Misty looked into the brush to see a pair of red glowing eyes nearly as tall as she was watching her. The Mightyena watched as she scooped the pup up. It whimpered and licked her hand. "I'll help her, I promise." Misty said to the mother, and Nyx called out too, as if to make the same promise. Jeffery's house was just a little further down the path, and he made it back fine while Misty ran for the Pokemon Center. The pup survived her illness, and when Misty tried to take her back to her mother, she only greeted her warmly before turning back to Misty with a happy howl. Misty named her Lyko, and soon she and Nyx were inseperable. Invokes: Misty does well under pressure, and has a good reputation and a famous Dad. Compels: Sometimes those expectations are too high, or trying to exceed them means falling short. A family legacy is a lot to live up to. Julia's Guest Star: (Im)Perfect Timing "Nyx use your Spark attack! Separate them!" Misty yelled. Lightning crackled through the cave as the Seels and Spheals scattered back to their pools, but Nyx had been careful not to hit anyone. "Hi, I'm Misty." Misty said to the girl who'd been holding off the angry pokemon. "A kid just ran out of here yelling for help. So, well here I am!" She gave Nyx a pat on the head. "What got them so riled up?" There was a splash and the cave turned suddenly turned ice cold as the ground started to shake. A Dewgong and a Walrein emerged from opposite pools, flanked by Seels and Spheals. "Yikes!" Misty said. "Get ready Nyx!" But she knew these adult pokemon were way beyond their level. They'd have to do something besides fight or the whole cave might collapse! Things were looking even worse when... He befriended a wild Shinx who came around looking for food, and eventually captured it. For months, the two were inseparable, spending lazy afternoons together fishing or rocking on the porch swing. Everything was perfect. But one day no one called him out of his pokeball. Not the next day, or the next. He didn't know how long he waited, sleeping, but when a young girl opened the ball, he looked frantically for his master. The old man was gone. The cabin was falling to pieces, and was haunted by ghost pokemon. Shinx didn't know what to do. After they escaped from the ghosts, the girl offered him a place at her side. She called him Nyx. Let's make her a female Professor. ![]() I like the seashell theme. Cockleville, Scallop City, Conchton, Clamburg... Safari-Zone Island is a great idea. TM factory is a great idea. As for Rocket's motivation, well, what has it always been? Capturing rare pokemon (and experimenting on them to make them into superweapons!) Also making lots of money and not caring about the environment. Because they're the bad guys. Oh, it would be cool if the E4 had some kind of purpose in setting beyond fighting trainers every day. Although that's a long ways off, it would be neat to see them out in the world doing their poke-friendly jobs. Maybe one of them is investigating things at the TM factory but needs our help(tm) to make it less bad for the area. mistaya fucked around with this message at Jan 1, 2013 around 01:44 |

Trainer Name: Julia Sterling Gender: ♀ Age: 13 IDNo.: 810569 Picture: ![]() Fate Points: 2 Aspects: Trainer's Goal: Psychic-in-Training From a young age, Julia had psychic powers. However, she doesn’t really understand the extent of what she is able to do. As she adventures, she hopes to learn how to better understand and control her powers. Her best talent is with empathy, but she also has a small telekinetic ability. Since she is inexperienced, it can be hard getting her power to work… or stop. Invoke: Sense psychic energy, empathize with people and pokemon Compel: Inexperienced with psychic energy, misuse her power Trouble: Chronic Hero Syndrome What’s the easiest way for a psychic who can sense other people’s feelings to be happy? Make other people happy! Whether they want to be or not! It’s almost like a drug. She has a bit of a reputation for being extraordinarily helpful regardless of the danger to herself. Invoke: Do daring heroics Compel: Help with every little problem, psychic power solves everything First Adventure: The Sacrifice Shipwreck Cove is a dangerous place near City #1. It is said the cave is haunted by the ghosts of shipwrecked sailors. A school of Caravahna and Sharpedo moved into the area and began sinking ships that tried to pass their home. Which is the perfect place to go on a dare! A kid decided to do just that and didn’t come back for a whole day. Julia immediately jumped into action, determined to save the kid regardless of the allegedly dangerous pokemon that lived in the area. She needed to be pointed in the right direction, but with some help she eventually found her way to the cove. It turned out the cave wasn’t haunted, but instead inhabited by adorable Spheal and Seel. And yet, the two species never saw eye to eye. Due to the kids troublemaking, a fight between the two broke out! Julia was able to reach the kid, but in turn drew the ire of the quarreling pokemon. One of Altia’s greatest battles was about to be waged, with Julia and a mostly innocent child right in the middle of it! “We’ll make an opening, kid. Keep running, no matter what happens to me!” Julia glared at her opposition. “That’s all you got? You better bring more bodies, ‘cuz I’ll take you all out! Show ‘em, Aegis!” Regardless of her unflappable courage, things were looking bad until... Invoke: "Never tell me the odds!", Protect the weak Compel: No sense of danger, Last to leave the fight Guest Star: "J'accuse!" Julia attended a contest held by graduates of the Young Trainer's School. Although Julia herself had little interest in contests, she had been invited by a friend she had helped out that was graduating. Over the course of the contest, Julia noticed something unusual. During the final bout, the Glameow of one contestant suddenly collapsed in the middle of the performance. The opponent was handed the win, but Julia had a bad feeling about the whole thing. Afterwards, Julia offered to help the cheated trainer figure out what really happened. Through some good ol' fashioned detective work, they figured the grounds was laced with stun spores! Julia dragged Peggy back to the arena and demanded that she confess to her cheating ways. Naturally, Peggy refused, but Julia wasn't going to give up. She knew Peggy was a cheat! Using her telepathy, she concentrated the spores in a single spot and threw it at Peggy's Roselia. When the Roselia wasn't affected (grass pokemon are rather resistant to their own spores, after all!), it was plain for all to see that Peggy was a dirty cheater. Interestingly, she got a package a few days after the whole fiasco. As thanks for her cooperation, someone had sent her a pokemon. That was awful kind of Madeline! Invoke: "I'm never wrong!", convince someone she's in the right Compel: Hold a grudge when proven wrong Second Guest Star: Aspiring Tourist Being the helper that she is, she just had to help Ivan with his problem. Unfortunately, she didn't know of any way her psychic powers could help. There was one place she knew of that could have the solution to his problem: Shipwreck Cove. Home of angry Seel and Spheal, but after her last adventure in there they had settled down some. Since the cove wasn't in a cold climate, there had to be something in there that drew ice pokemon to it. After some spelunking, they found a great mount of Nevermelt Ice. Julia used Herpe, her Pawniard, to cut a large chunk of ice away from the main bulk. They couldn't lug it out on their backs, so they decided to float it out through the water. On the way, they were attacked by Caravahna. Between Herpe and Globy, the angry fish were repelled. Once the Nevermelt Ice was situated in Ivan's room, Julia spent a lot of time talking with him about his culture and heritage. She was quite interested in everything he had to say and sparked a hunger for adventure she didn't know had existed until then. To see and experience new things... Altia was just too small! There was a whole wide world out there and she was going to see it! Mistaya, yours looks great, but you don't have an IDNo.! (Not that it really matters.) Staticpulse, you'rs also looks pretty good, just your Stunts need a little more mechanical description to them. The Telekenisis/Will one would be a new skill trapping, but your Empathy one needs some explanation. Is it a bonus? Is it a time reduction? Do you see more Aspects? Also, you guys don't have to make ALL your Moves at 2 Power...

![]() Trainer Name: Ivan Calico Brees Gender: ♂ Age: 14 IDNo.: 406227 Trainer's Goal: Make the Altia Region Cooler! Sure, making his presence known to the Pokemon League is great and all, but the people are weird, the terrain is terrifying, and it's too darn hot here! Even some rain would do him good. If he has to stay here, Ivan's going to make it more like home any way he can. Invokes: Comfortable in cold/wet weather conditions, determined to improve the well-being of Altia's community, unaffected by local superstition and legend Compels: Not prepared for hot weather, insecure about his body around all these fit people Trouble: In My Home Country... Invokes: Interesting to talk to and look at Compels: Alienates people with his native culture First Adventure: Highs and Globes Invokes: Never surrender, love your family, sculpt the world to your standards Compels: Be fearful of change, challenge your superiors It was a nice warm day on the boat as it pulled into port, and Ivan was not having any of it. The headband he was wearing at the time was over his eyes to block that tropical sun, and the insulated clothes that cover most of his body remain zipped up. His parents got jobs working for the TM Factory, which required their family to move to Altia and for Ivan to conform to their ideas. As if middle school wasn't hard enough... For the first few days he stayed inside, but eventually the weather got better as a storm came in. Ivan decided to walk along the damp beach near the TM Factory to see the spot his parents loved so much now that it was tolerable. It wasn't long until the smell of industrial smog overtook that of fresh rain. Disgusting. Ivan turned back around and started his way back home when he heard a cry. Further inspection reveals a globe-shaped Pokémon clearly in pain. Although he was wearing gloves it wasn't hard to feel the slimy texture on the Spheal's back. The water was unclean and this Pokémon was a victim. Taking her under his arm, Ivan rushed to the Pokémon Center. The nurse was understanding of the situation, but the policy for wild Pokémon was to release them after treatment. Ivan protested, knowing that the local waters were no place for living creatures. The nurse refused to listen, so Ivan came up with his own solution. "Give me a Pokéball." Again, the nurse could not help him, but Madeline Whitehall could. When Ivan got home with Globy, his parents were waiting. They knew about poisoned Pokémon near the TM Factory and wanted Ivan to know that pursuing the factory would doom the whole family to poverty. Ivan promised to stay silent. Ivan promised to lie. Ivan's bedroom upstairs was not accommodating for a Spheal or a Northern native. He decided that instead of taking Globy somewhere she would want to be, he would make his room that place. For that, he found Julia Sterling and her Pokémon. Madeline Whitehall: Noblesse Ablige Ivan heard a voice behind him. "Do you know who sponsors this region's Pokémon Centers?" Ivan turned around to see a fairly aristocratic young lady nosing her way to the front of the line. She continued, "I'll spell it out for you: Whitehall Trust. My father's bank funds this building's medical equipment, the state of art computer system, and well, yes... the paychecks. I don't believe he would be impressed to hear how the nurses here are so adamant to policy as to allow Pokémon to suffer in their care, hm?" Ivan gulped. He didn't expect to be getting help from the owner's daughter, but in the end he decided it was for the best. The nurse, wings clipped from her scolding, came back with the Spheal and an empty Pokéball. Ivan offered it to the Pokémon, who rocked for a little bit before willingly entering the ball. "I'll call you... Globy," he whispered to his new Pokémon. When the crowd around Madeline subsided, she caught up to Ivan and asked him what all happened to the Spheal. He explained the slime that coated the surface of the water and blamed the TM Factory for polluting. Madeline promised to help the cause any way she could, and Ivan believed her. His first day on the town and Ivan already had someone he could call a friend. Julia Sterling: Aspiring Tourist "I was wondering if you know somewhere... cold?" Ivan had thought this cold-looking Trainer could be able to help him, but there was no way Ivan could have guessed it was so ideal. A huge chunk of NeverMeltIce, a whole pack of Spheals and he even got to say hi to Globy's parents! Well, actually, there wasn't much time to chat since the chunk of NeverMeltIce that was carved away was being quickly assailed by a swarm of Carvanha. Although Globy could handle the half of them that wasn't being cut away by Julia's Pawniard, one rascally fish made his way up to the surface of the ice, babbling like a maniac. "Harblablablablaba!" The Carvanha leaped out of the water and smacked Ivan in the chest with his tail, nearly winding him. Now they had a mutual vendetta. Ivan called out for Globy and her snow, which hit the mad fish in his scaly skin and hardened up the slimy moisture coating him. Ivan picked him up and was about to toss him back into the water when the fish crushed all the ice around him with wild flailing. Something was different about this one and Ivan could feel it in the short time he had held on. Globy shot a water jet at the fish and pushed it towards Ivan as he readied a Pokéball. One last time the Carvanha let out a gobble before Ivan dropped the ball on top of him. Three times the Pokéball shook. Click. After watching the Pawniard carve up a dashing Pawniard sculpture, Ivan, Globy, Julia and her Pokémon moved the ice into his room. Then Julia asked Ivan what he was doing here. One question couldn't hurt, but that turned into another and another. Eventually Ivan was telling his life story and the tales told in his old home. It was entertaining for the both of them. It looked like some natives could understand Ivan after all. Where the Walreins drag along with their fins, she would roll until she fell in the water. From there, she can paddle on the surface and crawl back on land when the time comes. Storms make the surface rough, but it was the muck that made it intolerable that day. Her family swam to the area around a big hollow rock on Altia where this clear muck dominated the water, and the Spheal was caught up by it. Her fins couldn't swim through this muck and she ended up getting caught in the waves. Her cries for help were met with mouthfuls of toxic goo. She was washed ashore and barely able to drag herself away. The only thing left was to bleat for her life. Her call was answered by a tall blue boy who took her to the mainland and found someone to clean her fur and remove the toxins from her system. When she met him again after getting cleaned, the boy tousled her head and asked her to enter the Pokéball he had in his hand. She gladly accepted the proposal and became his new sister. Okay, here's my trainer drawn up, I had a much busier day than I had anticipated, so I'll stat up my Pokemon tomorrow after work. Trainer Name: Jeffery Calant Gender: ♂ Age: 15.5 IDNo.: 28457 ![]() Trainer's Goal: Enjoy my time away from home. Due to troubles at home, my Pokemon journey did not start until age 15. Now that I'm finally out on my own, I want to explore and see everything I can here in the Altia region. I don't know how long I'll be able to travel around the region, so I have to make every moment count. Invokes: Inquisitive and investigative. Not scared to try something new and exciting. However, one morning Jeff awoke to discover that the family Doduo had run off somewhere (DoDo was only placed in a Pokeball during storms and when excess company was over). Jeff decided to go find DoDo before his mom woke up. Jeff was halfway up the path before he realized that not only did he have no idea where DoDo had gone, he also was unfamiliar with the island itself, only having moved there a week ago. Realizing that DoDo was probably homesick and would want to get back home, Jeff decided to check the docks where the boat had dropped them off. Upon arriving at the dock, there was no sign of DoDo, but a passing trainer said that (s)he had seen one heading down the beach not too long ago. Jeff headed toward the beach and saw some distinctive bird tracks heading into a small grove. Following the tracks, Jeff finally found his family's lost Doduo, and discovered something delightful; DoDo had been taking food to a small family of 3 Azurill and a Marill! Reunited with DoDo, Jeff helped pass out food to each of the small Pokemon and then he and DoDo headed home. Refresh: 3 First Guest Star: I spy with my Trainer eye... Madeline's Won’t Stand For Deceit The afternoon of arriving in the Altia region, Jeffery and his mother saw a flyer for an amateur Pokemon Contest being held at the Young Trainer's Academy. Thinking that it would be a great way to unwind, they both decide to attend the event. After several rounds of the contest, Jeffery began to get bored; he loved Pokemon Contests as much as the next guy, but this Academy event had many more contestants than a normal Contest. As Jeff started to zone out and lose focus, Jeff started to notice random facts about the Contest hall. The chairs were from 3 different sets instead of all being matched, one the the spotlights needed a new bulb, the third contest judge wore a real silk tie rather than the less fancy ones of his compatriots, and the stage floor really needed to be swept, it was covered in a thin layer of yellow fuzz. Jeffery snapped back to alertness and sat up straight...that fuzz wasn't dust, it was stun spores! He considered alerting the contest officials, but it was too late! He watched as a classy-looking trainer's Glameow fell prey to the paralyzing effect of the spores. After the contest, Jeffery pushed his way through the crowd and found the Glameow's trainer, Madeline. "Madeline, you opponent in that last round cheated!" Jeffery exclaimed. "What?" Madeline replied, aghast "No graduate of the Academy would stoop to such a tactic!" Jeffery quickly explained how the opponent's Roselia had carefully scattered a light coating of stun spores across the contest stage in between rounds, and Madeline understood what had occured. "Ooh, Peggy and her Roselia will pay for that one..." Madeline muttered. "Thank you for all your help Jeffery!" Jeff smiled, bid farewell to Madeline, and headed back home with his mother. Invoke Can notice minute details and reconstruct a chain of events mentally. Compel Can sometimes "miss the forest for the trees" and has trouble focusing on things deemed "uninteresting". Second Guest Star: I don't know...but I'll try! Julia's The Sacrifice On his way to find DoDo, Jeffery passed another trainer who looked very determined but slightly lost. Jeff almost hurried on his way, but remembering the trainer that pointed him after DoDo's trail, he instead stopped to ask the girl if there was anything he could do to help. "Er, you look lost, is everything alright?" asked Jeff hesitantly. "Do you know how to get to Shipwreck Cove from here?" she replied "I'm trying to get there to find someone who didn't come back." Jeffery cringed inwardly. He'd only just arrived in the region, and had only the faintest recollection of the local landmarks. Casting deep into his memory, he seemed to recall that there was a cove marked on the map of the region that his mother gave him right after moving in, and that it was vaguely south. "I think its a bit down that way" Jeffery said, pointing in a southly direction "It was on the map as Clearwater Cove, but its the only one near here." With a nod of thanks, the trainer rushed off, looking just as determined at before. "I wonder if I'll run into her again" mused Jeff as he continued on his way to find DoDo. His mother had been Mrs. Calant's childhood companion and he had been born and raised with the Calants. However it wasn't all fun and games. DoDo vividly remembered the day the important looking woman in a blue suit with teal hair had come to the door. DoDo didn't hear exactly what was said, but he saw Mrs. Calant break down in tears, and that was also the day that Mr. Calant never came home. Mrs. Calant took DoDo along on the trip to pick Jeffery up from school, which normally was fun, getting out and about, but it was a very quiet and somber walk. Jeffery also cried that day; Mrs. Calant told him something about his father and an accident at work, and all DoDo remember from the rest of that day was 'caww'ing softly as Jeffery held him and cried and cried. As time went on, things did not get a lot better at the Calant household. Mrs. Calant would see the doctors two or three times a week, Jeffery became more and more introverted, spending large amounts of time just sitting and staring out the front window. DoDo did everything he could to help out. He would walk Jeffery to school when his mother was stuck in bed, he would help cook dinner by fetching ingredients and stirring pots, he would make sure Jeffery remembered to do all his homework. With DoDo's help, some semblance of normalcy was restored to the Calant house, and Jeffery did not slide into depression. One day, DoDo was placed in his pokeball and when he was released again a couple days later, they were in a new home in the Altia region. DoDo liked the new climate, but worried about Jeffery finding new friends and hobbies in this small island community. He need not have worried though - the sea air was helping Mrs. Calant's health tremendously, and it looked like Jeffery would finally be able to spend his time doing what he loved; exploring. Sorry for the slow delays on this. These are just first impressions, I'll do more in-depth stuff tomorrow when I'm not sleep deprived and don't have work. Rather Watch Them, your person seems good. Doesn't have a Stunt though. I'd recommend taking one at the very least. For Defense Curl, you could roll Defense if you wanted to. And I'm drafting rules on using Moves for Blocks, including reflexive Blocks. Basically the same as Attacks, only if you get half of your Power shifts if fail your dodge roll. So even if you fail your dodge roll, you can still get some defensive benefit from it. I'll draft up an example of that too to help explain it. So it's up to you if you want to use Defense Curl as a Create Advantage or a Block. I think it'd be more appropriate as a Block. (Theoretically, you could draft Growl as a more Offensive Block against the target's Attack skill. This is why I love FATE, multiple ways to interpret the same thing.) Jivjov, again your character doesn't have a stunt but that's my personal recommendation. Still looks fine. Funny how being fifteen and a half is considered "Old" for a Pokemon Trainer. Still need Skills and Ability for DoDo. Speaking of which, that's a very appropriate name for a Doduo. Will he be DoDoDo when he evolves? ![]() Also, with regards to the Pokemon League, I've been thinking about how to handle it, and this is a little to blame for me taking Pokemon too seriously. It is extremely ridiculous to have a bunch of little kids taking on and possibly winning the Pokemon League when there's probably tons of other trainers who have been around for longer and have bigger teams of Pokemon on standby. So I'm thinking the Pokemon League is probably split into multiple divisions, like actual sports leagues. But there's a special division for newbie trainers who have been recently licensed and haven't been placed into the official divisions yet. Being all newbie Trainers, you'll be in that division, along with your Rival team of NPCs. Granted, it's the end-game part, so I'll have plenty of time to figure out what to do with that, since I don't want it to end up like "Okay, now you two PCs fight each other, you two get to fight NPCs...and we'll see whose the Champion in a few rounds. "EDIT: Something came up in the IRC. quote:Static put up a good point, for Fragile Speedsters. It's really easy for them to get hit. (It was easy for them to get hit before in Pokemon anyway) Right now, if you wanted to use Speed as a defensive stat, that would take an Ability. One that you'd have to craft on your own. Oh, that is exactly the advice I needed, thanks!![]() Name: Madeline Whitehall Gender: ♀ Age: 14 ID #: 508584 Aspects: Trainer's Goal: (Aspiring) Star Coordinator! Invokes: inspire Pokemon with loud cheers and proper grooming, push herself to perfection in contests Compels: refuse to ignore a pokemon who needs her encouraging guidance, take offense when others dare to criticize her humble performance Madeline is the youngest scion of the Whitehall family, only one of the wealthiest names in all of Altia. She’s received some of the finest education and grooming that money can buy, got everything she ever asked, and witnessed some of the most expensive, enchanting Pokemon Contests. But she treasured the day she earned her trainer’s license than anything else. At last, the day she strikes out to prove herself without the judging gaze of her overbearing parents! Even they couldn’t keep her from taking the Pokemon Journey on her own like others before her. And she’ll settle for nothing less than taking her own Pokemon to the greatest contest of all: the Grand Festival and the Ribbon Cup! Trouble: Rockets On Her Back! Invokes: get good to great service in Team Rocket-controlled establishments Compels: receive unusual attention within Team Rocket-controlled establishments, find herself waylaid by Team Rocket members “for her safety” Still, her folks won’t let her get away off so easily. Which makes things really complicated when it turns out her father owes most of the family wealth to his discreet allegiance with Team Rocket. So even after she promised a hundred times that she wasn’t going to get in the way of Madeline’s journey, she uses her considerable underground influence to give her daughter some of the most unusual guardians... First Adventure: Won’t Stand For Deceit Invokes: be extra convincing when telling the truth, recall that one rule that trainer’s clearly breaking! Compels: expose deceit if she’s aware of it, no matter how inconvenient and dangerous After she graduated in the Young Trainer’s Academy, Madeline took part in a mock contest with her fellow graduates and their star Pokemon. A completely unofficial and untelevised affair, of course. But think, if she can show up the best of her classmates here, her Glameow is clearly talented enough to take on the rest of the world. That said, Anica proved to the task, as she dazzled the stage and audience with her presence and poise early in the contest. She seemed set to bag the rest of the way. That was, till two found themselves at a crucial battle against their rivals Peggy Miles and her Roselia. It was a close match by the Battle Round, as the two Pokemon twirled around the field and each displayed their flashiest moves even while they gracefully dodged the other’s attacks. Amica almost gained the edge in points, until suddenly she froze and collapsed in the middle of her signature move, the Spinning Fake-Out Flash. She lost the battle, and all hopes on winning the contest. Only until after the contest that Madeline found out, with the assistance of another Trainer, that Peggy committed a foul treachery. Before the Battle Round even started, her Roselia managed to coat the entire arena floor with trace amount of her stun spores. Almost negligible to a grass and poison type, but it was enough to bring down even a prized cat like Amica eventually. Even though the two trainers exposed this fact and got their revenge on Peggy through a proper battle, the damage. Madeline wasn’t going to forget this anytime soon. Guest Star (Misty Riker): The Pokémon Whisperer Invokes: emphasize with Pokémon, teach them amazing tricks Compels: fulfill their needs and wants no matter how it costs to her, become completely oblivious to what people think of her "Amazing, people actually live in these woods!" If it wasn't for this Murkrow, Madeline would have never entered this dank forest on her own. With her best coat, even! But she picked it up from his sorry state, the poor thing didn't even know where to find his flock. Madeline always did have a better sense for how Pokemon felt than she did for people. When she followed the bird to this dark cabin, she found out that this where murkrow's flock used to roost before they migrated. It also happened to be a nest for other terrible things. After the fuss with the wild ghosts, Madeline helped placate Misty's very distressed Shinx. It seemed that he lost his owner? Poor thing. She tried to emphasize with the Shinx, to help him come to grips with his current prediction. Fortunately, he came to bond with a new owner very quickly. How good for him. It would be grand if more Pokémon listened to her like this! Oh, and she should get to know more about Misty too. Guest Star (Ivan Calico Brees): Noblesse Oblige Invokes: help those less privileged than her, push the weight of her family name Compels: put on airs, take on more responsibility and promises than she can manage "Do you know who sponsors this region's Pokémon Centers? I'll spell it out for you: Whitehall Trust. My father's bank funds this building's medical equipment, the state of art computer system, and well, yes... the paychecks. I don't believe he would be impressed to hear how the nurses here are so adamant to policy as to allow Pokémon to suffer in their care, hm?" Madeline probably made more of a fuss about this incident than she really needed to. Her father called a few days and sounded a bit upset that she pushed the Pokémon Center staff like that. But she didn't like how the nurse treated Ivan that day, especially when he appeared determined to care for the sick Spheal. If Madeline was in the position to help, it was only natural for her to make use of it. In any case, her outburst drew more attention to herself than it did to Ivan. Madeline got to talk to the northerner later on about what happened to the Spheal in the first place. She promised that she would help do something about that dangerous TM Factory, perhaps talk to her father about buying and cleaning it up. It was a sincere promise, though a hasty one in retrospect. Amica certainly came from a great pedigee, her Purugly and Persian parents fine examples of that famous Whitehall breeding. She got along with her master Madeline almost immediately after they first met, and enjoyed the cusp of life as the pet of a rich girl. If Amica were spoiled any more, she’d probably look like her mother sooner than she’d wish! She took her loss against Lilith, Peggy Miles’ blasted Roselia, much more badly than her master did. While Miss Madeline swore never to expose herself to deceit again, Amica didn’t even want to give others that chance to do it to again. When she finally beat that Roselia in a proper match, the Glameow only felt more vindicated in that conviction. It bummed him a whole lot, he really liked being in that group. Made him safe. He liked safe. The human who stumbled upon him was pretty helpful, though. She tried to understand what happened to Hawford, even followed him back to the cabin where the other Murkrow once were. She also tried to squawk at the Murkrow in occasional reply, as if he understood what her noises meant. Uh, her heart was in the right place anyway. Miss Madeline knew what she was doing otherwise, so he stayed by her side even when the wild, scary ghosts came after them. With Miss Madeline’s constant shouting and attention, the shy Hawford pushed himself to crow loud enough to scare off a few ghosts. Huh. That sort of thing just wasn’t him, especially in front of ghosts! But the human made him feel safe, even as he did really dangerous things he never did before. He liked that. Alright I'm gonna post what I have and maybe yall can give me some feedback. The specifics of the battle system are a bit obscure to me still; I'm more than open to changing things if they don't make game sense or if they're just plain stupid (the Barrier Coaching stunt, for instance, is an idea which I see mainly functioning outside of trainer battles. Can you even use stunts in battle?) Let me know if this looks good or if it looks like crazy poo poo! Trainer Name: Pax Gender: ♂ Age: 14 IDNo.: 481516 Picture: Aspects: Trainer's Goal: Find a mentor! Pax wants to study under a gym leader, but finds most gyms too traditional and combat-focused. Pax is turned off by typical Pokemon battles, and is interested in finding a gym which nurtures his Pokemon's natural intelligence and cunning, where he can practice among likeminded colleagues. Invokes: Makes a good first impression with professionals. Understands trainers as individuals. Compels: Seen as strange and pretentious by many trainers. Turns away good opportunities just because they're not what he thinks he's looking for. Trouble: Meticulous Pax has a tendency to spend more time reading about destinations and weighing his options than putting plans into action; this is why he has yet to leave his hometown at age 14. Similarly, although Romana's cleverness is certainly her dominant trait, she is so undertrained in practical skills that she cannot hope to compete in even the most academic gym environment. Pax and his Pokemon will need to learn to get off their asses to get what they desire. Invokes: Difficult to anticipate in battle. Occasionally impressive and memorable displays. Researches everything thoroughly. Compels: Neglects traditional training, misses the character building therein, has trouble being spontaneous, and makes pathetic excuses when he loses. First Adventure: Moon Song One late night, drawn by some unknown calling, Romana pleads to go outside. Although it's cold and late, Pax follows her into the night, climbing fences and opening latched gates along the way. She leads him to the beach, where she stands for a while, listening to the wind and occasionally whistling back. Then she leaps out onto the waves, landing impossibly on the surface of the icy water, and turns back to face her master. Pax steps tentatively onto the psychic barrier and follows her out onto the black freezing expanse of the sea, out 100 meters or more until finally Romana sits, calling into the breeze, joining a song which he cannot hear. Here in the frozen void, the full moon reflecting off of the Pokemon's wings, he gets a sense of the vacuum of space, the lunar environment said to be Clefairy's distant origin. A trek through the tall grass seems trivial by comparison. With his own fears and anxieties put in perspective, he resolves to leave town and find them both a place to belong. Invokes: Deep mutual trust in his Pokemon, empathy for the lonely and exiled. Compels: Otherwise afraid of commitment and risks. Guest Star: The more battle-savvy training buddy met along the way. As a result, she is diplomatic and cautious in her relations with other Pokemon. Invokes: Calms and fascinates other Pokemon Compels: Oh god he's not calming down, what now First Adventure: Peaceful retirement Romana was bred in captivity as a lab test subject. No, nothing sinister--just an ordinary maze-running lab rat, albeit a rare and expensive one. Specifically, she was part of an effort to understand the biorhythmic phenomenon called Metronome, and whether a similar oscillating signal could be used to enhance mental capabilities in a safer, more predictable fashion. The experiment yielded nothing remarkable, and as is common practice with lab Pokemon, she was donated to a Pokemon professor who re-homed her with a young Pokemon trainer. Although she has always known humans, she knows friendship for the first time, and could be perfectly content to forget about the lab and live out her life as a faithful companion. Except... ...Except for the video. She's never seen another Clefairy, but she's seen the image--grainy amateur video recordings of ghostly white figures dancing in the dark; a chilling, beautiful melody made obscure and grotesque by cheap audio equipment; a rhythmic clicking drilling into her brain and driving her mad. For now, their needs align, but the obsession with finding out what she is and where she came from is the only thing that might drive a wedge between Romana and her trainer. Invokes: Gets along with humans; Loves her master. Okay, I did some digging on Moves today and noticed a few inconsistencies. I'm going to try to clarify things up.Staticpulse posted:Name: Confusion In the Pokemon games, Confusion was an attack that had a % chance of inflicting the Confused status effect. For Fate, % chances don't really work, so in IRC I said that the closest we could do would be something more like "Inflicts Confused-flavored Consequences." And rereading over the FATE Core rules, if you Succeed With Style on an Attack, you can reduce the shifts inflicted by 1 to apply a Boost. (One-shot Aspect. Free Invoke, then gone.) If you want to flavor the Boost for this attack as "Confused," that'd be fine. So just change this to "Attack, Inflicts Confused-flavored Consequences and Boosts if possible." I remember working with you on Imprison, and I did some thinking on it. I think All Attacks might be a little limiting, but Pokemon's Imprisoned prevented the use of 1 particular Move. So I say let's take the middle ground and say Imprison only works on certain combinations of Types and Actions that you can declare when you make the move. Like targeting "Fire Attacks" or "Normal Advantages." This way you lock down a specific move of the opponents, prevent Improvised moves of that type-action combination as well, but still give the opponent some opportunities. Oh, and the Armor is based on your Power for this, and two-shifts got use to make it a Zone thing. So just say "Grants Armor:1 to any actions this Block could apply to." Rather Watch Them posted:Lemme At 'Em: +2 Shift against Trainers when Ivan or his Pokémon are being insulted. Defense Curl could swing two ways. You can use it as a Block against Attacks targeting your Defense, or you could use it as a Navel-Gaze Advantage (your target for Aim is simply 3 or better) which seems to be what you're trying. So your Combat Stats should be "Defense vs 3 (Navel-Gaze)" Doing this won't increase your Defense by 1, that's incompatible with FATE. But what it can do is give you an Advantage you use your Free Invokes (or actual Invokes if you want to spend the FP) when using your Defense for anything. I'm going to be limiting when, how, and why you can Invoke Aspects a lot in this game, you need proper justification. For Powder Snow, see above for Static Pulse's Confusion on how I'd like this set up. Growl works as a Pre-Block, and if it can apply to an Attack, you also get Armor:X where X is half of your Power for Growl. So using an odd number for Growl. Encore works better as an Advantage, not a Block since it doesn't affect the opponent's stats or actions. The Advantage would literally be named "Encore" which could be Invoked to force a Compel on the opponent to repeat the same action. This includes any possible Free Invokes. jivjov posted:Abilities Pursuit...normally Attack vs Speed isn't allowed, but I can work with this. We can say Pursuit can only be used if you delay your action for the round, and wait to see if the Pokemon gets switched out. If the Pokemon switches out you get to hit an unusual stat and get a last hit in before they switch out. If they don't...well, now you're later on the Initiative list, but you can use a different action. Directly lowering someone else's stats doesn't work in FATE, so you got to do this as an Advantage which inflicts an Aspect that can be Invoked if the opposing Pokemon uses Attack in an Action, or a Block against an opposing Pokemon's actions using Attack. Look above for how I said to handle Growl. Man, Protect...that's a weird action. I would say this should be a Cute Block against ALL actions against you. However, All means All, including friendly actions as well. Except you don't have that much Cute so...hmm. I don't know what you could roll instead of Cute though. Oh, and you can't use Protect twice in a row. TurninTrix posted:Name: Fake Out bagshotrow posted:Alright I'm gonna post what I have and maybe yall can give me some feedback. The specifics of the battle system are a bit obscure to me still; I'm more than open to changing things if they don't make game sense or if they're just plain stupid (the Barrier Coaching stunt, for instance, is an idea which I see mainly functioning outside of trainer battles. Can you even use stunts in battle?) Let me know if this looks good or if it looks like crazy poo poo! ...I have no idea what Barrier Coaching is supposed to be. What on earth are you trying to use this for? bagshotrow posted:Skills: You do not need to define moves as Improvised or Learned. Improvised you literally make up on the spot on the battlefield. You only write down your Learned Moves here. Do you want to do Barrier as a Navel-Gaze Advantage or a Block? Reference the bit on Defense Curl above on how to handle this. You probably want to make the Power higher than what they're using for Defense Curl either way. Metronome would be an incredible pain the rear end, let's avoid this move. Pound is perfectly fine, but your a Normal Pokemon and your STAB means you don't need to mark this as a Move since it's only 1 Power. Moonlight...FATE doesn't really have mechanics for removing stress. I'm sorry, I wouldn't know how to implement this, unless someone else has any ideas. I hope all of this clears up some stuff. As normal, if you have any questions, just toss them my way. Also, all of you can go ahead and stat up your second Pokemon if you'd like, you don't need to wait for Guest Stars, although you will need to wait for their Aspects.

Krysmphoenix posted:Fake Out is a very strange attack, since it goes first when it can, and always inflicts Flinch, but you can only use it the first time. So it doesn't really work for FATE. Because of the way Fake Out works (10 PP but only 40 Power), I would say that it's better suited for an Advantage. Perhaps you could make it Speed vs Defense, which inflicts Flinch. Yeah, it did seem awkward when I tried to translate it in the system. I considered using Scratch instead, but Fake Out is just a much cooler move, narratively speaking. ![]() I could just have it Create an Advantage (inflict Flinch) instead, then change up of my Glameow's abilities so it can use Fake Out to deal damage in a specific situation (perhaps when the opponent is flinching?). Would that work? quote:Moonlight...FATE doesn't really have mechanics for removing stress. I'm sorry, I wouldn't know how to implement this, unless someone else has any ideas. Speaking of which, do any of the Pokemon stats add consequence slots?

Updated DoDo's moves and abilities to reflect your comments, including shifting Cute higher on the skill pyramid.

TurninTrix posted:Take a page from The Kerberos Club/Strange FATE: To clear stress, roll a relevant skill (Sp. Attack, I guess?) against a difficulty equal to the highest stress box filled; for every 2 shifts obtained, clear one stress box. Though maybe just reduce it to every 1 shift instead to improve utility. Or instead of removing stress, roll +2 difficulty to remove a mild consequence, +4 to reduce a moderate consequence to a mild one, and so on. This also has the potential to be very broken. I'm allowing this because I want to test it in action. Please understand if I ask you to change this at a later time. Also, I'm thinking I need to write up some basic Compels / "Invoke for Effect" (as they used to be called) for the basic status effects. Remember, a Free Invoke in this case basically counts as a Free Compel, your opponent suffers but doesn't get the Fate Point if they accept. (I guess they can still FP to buy it off.)

I've updated Bronzor's moves to reflect your comments, Krysm. So this post is at least somewhat constructive. I've done some thought. We have a circular island here, so having the Pokemon League at the top of a central mountain would be a good idea. You can see the League from anywhere on the island, a constant weight on the minds of would-be challengers. Route 20 would be an outside route. A gentle hike up the side of the mountain for the most part. Scenic and gentle, a path of reflection for those going up to the Pokemon League. Town E serves as a base camp. Very spartan, few amenities. No one stays here long and it shows. Victory Road is a long, hard path up the interior of the mountain. Winding caves, multiple pathways, hundreds of zubats. It's a pretty rough place. What features most is a structure in the large central chamber of the dormant volcano. Once full of lava eons ago, the volcano has been pacified and made completely safe (probably). As for the Pokemon League itself, it hosts a wide variety of contests. The arena are actually built inside the volanco, the large structure visible from Victory Road. The further you get, the further down the arena is. And then the final battle can take place over flowing lava and such. Or, as another idea, Town E and Victory Road could be merged into a Mt. Battle (from the Orre games) sort of thing. There's several base camps along the mountain path and trainers must fight/navigate/puzzle their way past the challenges laid between the camp sites.

Let me see if I pull off an application by tomorrow or even sooner.
Major change to mechanics!
