I'd rather Dave Toub get the job than Andy Reid. I'm pretty ambivalent about this except to say this is the time to do it - like a third of the starters are free agents or are soon going to be so if you're going to radically change your schemes this is the time to decide on your direction.

From Emery's perspective, it makes a lot of sense. The core talent of the team isn't young. It seems to me Emery had the choice of either riding an aging team that wasn't his, or blowing it up and rebuilding one. From a job security perspective, unless he drafted amazingly, the Bears were going to go into severe decline in two or three years and eventually blame would be assigned to him. Now he's bought himself at least four or five years as GM I'd bet. Honestly, as a fan, I think retaining Lovie would have just been delaying the inevitable. Everything ends, and while I'd prefer the security of knowing what to expect from my team, I'm ok with moving on from Lovie. Also Stephen A Smith just alluded that firing Lovie was racist.

Here is the thing. You either had to extend Lovie so you could bring in a real offensive coordinator with security, or fire him and bring in a whole new regime. I was fine with either as long as Lovie wasn't allowed to choose his OC or have any input on that side of the ball. I still don't get why he has such undying support here. The Bears have had 1 good team in 6 years. A bottom tier offense for the 9 years he's been coach. All in a league where you need to be able to score to compete with the elite teams. Sure they'd likely always hang around that 7-9 to 10-6 area, but they aren't going to contend under him with his offenses.

Also I'm sad to realize this almost certainly means Brian Urlacher has played his last down as a Bear. It might be time but still.

This whole thing also raises the Jay Cutler question - next year is the last on his contract, right? What do you do about that? I guess you could just force him to play on a one year deal knowing that if you blow up the team now you're going to have a top-5 pick in 2014 that you can use on his replacement? And I suppose if Cutler holds out he's not doing himself any favors.

I'm loving pissed off and if they don't give Jay a deal I hope he sits and goes to join Lovie's Super Duper Philadelphia Super Bowl Winning Squad. Lovie was done the second Favre was out of the division. His defenses always seemed to destroy Favre. Really though, Lovie had a lot of success in those first few years. Then he just had a lot of, "good but not good enough" seasons. If you average out his wins over the course of his run with the Bears then it looks pretty good, but it's not the most accurate picture. He got by as long as he did with a lot of OCs being fired. If the Packers had players more suited to his style, I'd want him as our defensive coordinator in a second. I don't doubt his ability as a defensive guy. ShimSham fucked around with this message at Dec 31, 2012 around 16:52 |

I don't think it is a given that the defense has a major turnaround. As old as the defense supposedly is, there are some young talented guys on it also. Tillman is the only guy in the secondary over thirty, and I think we had the best secondary in football this year. A line of Melton, Paea, Wooten and Shea is actually a very nice line, and all of those guys are very young. The idea that the defense is close to completely falling off is an over-exaggeration. I think you need to focus on keeping the young core. I hope whoever the Bears brings in is cool with keeping Marinelli. (Has he be let go?)
