Because that's actually bullshit and there's a lot more that goes into the technology than that. Which incidentally is why the voice commands in Binary Domain are so lovely (and often hilarious since it assumes you are saying gently caress 90% of the time).

All the extra work that went into the Kinect microphone is related to positioning your voice in 3D space and filtering out the room echoes, none of which is necessary for a headset mic. "Better with Kinect" voice commands being limited to Kinect are purely the result of the contract the developer agreed to when they took Microsoft's money.

I'm going to redownload all of my Rock Band songs, but am going to keep them on a separate USB drive that I can unplug when not in use. That way my console doesn't get bogged down with checking licenses every time I start up or quit to dashboard. Is there a way to change my default storage device to the USB stick so that I can just set everything to download there? Otherwise i'll have to transfer everything to my hard drive, then copy everything to USB.

Yup, games like Endwar work great with a headset. The developer also had to develop their own engine for processing voice commands not limited to the incredibly difficult task of ignoring noise, audio from the game itself, and translating speech despite there being a wide array of timbre, volume, and accents. Or ME3 and Skyrim can hook in to native tools included free to 360 developers that does not require developing any extra voice processing and works with the low resource overhead the Kinect provides.

The only even remotely playable one I remember was Endwar, but that only had like 8 commands total. Off the top of my head, Binary Domain, Star Trek: Bridge Commander, and Lifeline were all kind of shitheaps in terms of voice recognition. efb on Endwar, but man. That was a hell of a game right there.

pseudorandom name posted:Because multiple games have shipped with fully functional voice commands via the controller headset and there's literally no reason a Mass Effect 3 or Skyrim couldn't do the same thing except the suitcase full of money Microsoft sent EA and Bethesda's way. There is a lot of processing involved in speech recognition. For most developers, it isn't worth the effort, especially when there is a wide range of possible devices to deal with (360s accept standardized headphone/mic devices, not all of which are created equal). Kinect has multiple microphones which provide a few nice features, but the important one for voice recognition is noise cancellation (which requires calibration). There is a whole pipeline of software built into Kinect and the Kinect libraries that handles this, plus a lot of the other heavy-lifting of voice recognition. Kinect hardware is also standardized, so the mics (and their positions) are a known constant. Recognition is a sensitive enough area that you can't make a very good "one engine fits all microphone setups" engine for games to use without sacrificing a ton of accuracy in the process. So yeah, it is *possible* to use headset mics, but the Kinect pipeline is tuned specifically for Kinect hardware. Making it work with headsets would be a ton more work, with much less payoff. Nothing stops devs from rolling their own (again, see Binary Domain), but it usually doesn't end up working well. While on the other hand, you can use the Kinect libraries, and get better than average voice recognition with very little effort (seriously, the XDK libraries for Kinect are pretty low effort compared to most game development tasks). And on top of that, the Kinect pipeline requires a lot less CPU cycles than doing your own recognition, because some of the work is made easier by the Kinect hardware.

I haven't had netflix open on my xbox for a while, so I downloaded the most recent update today and I think it's hosed itself up. I managed to watch about ten minutes of a film before it hit a wall and just buffered for about five minutes, then played ten seconds, then buffered, then played, etc. I tried putting on a different program, and it tried to buffer, got halfway, and crashed. Is the update screwy or something?

I was considering selling my 360 S 250GB and for some reason thought it would be a good idea to pull the hard drive and DBAN it. Well, that was stupid. I was under the (false) impression that the 360 would reconfigure it after a wipe, since it's an official drive, but it looks like the 360 will only format partitions, not recreate the necessary partitions once they're gone. The console no longer lists the drive in the Storage menu. I've searched around and found guides for using WD Scorpios with hacked firmware, and the instructions mention it recreating partitions (0/2/3), but I'm not sure what will happen if I restore this firmware on an official 360 hard drive. The instructions are all several years old too, and I purchased the 360 in December 2011, so I'm leery of trying this since the firmware might be outdated... I'm not sure what my options are at this point. Any suggestions?

For some reason, I can't send messages to players I'm not friends with. I have no idea why. A long while back (like, a year ago) my Xbox had the "Family Settings" thing on it. It was a complicated process that involved a long call to XBL support but I had it entirely removed. What the hell? Why can't I send poorly worded racial epithets and brag about my very specific sexual conquests?

It will work, the only difference is some identifier number will change to one every other hacked drive uses and theoretically Microsoft could block it in the future. They probably won't, though. It's been years now. Keep in mind that for backwards compatibility to work, that needs to be created as a second partition. I don't know if it's the default with that tool since I've never used it.

I probably asked this before but I'll be damned if I can remember the answer: When you pay to switch your Xbox gamertag, does the old gamertag go back into the available pool? I have two gamertags. Martytoof and Martytoof CND. I created Martytoof when I lived in the States. When I moved to Canada I had to create a new one because up until now Microsoft wouldn't let you transition GTs between regions. I've played with Martytoof CND for a long time now so I'd rather use that one, but I prefer the Martytoof name. If I change Martytoof to Martytoof USA, can I switch Martytoof CND to Martytoof later? MARTYTOOF!
