Some point card sizes are now region free (has to be codes made in the past 12 months I believe). A rep for a code selling site posted this: quote:Some points still have region lock, like 1600(US) or 2100 & 4200(EU & UK) but 2400 and 4000 we're selling are region free. Region free points worked to my favour in the Christmas sale. I purchased 2 x 800 US point codes for $20 and then purchased Max Payne 3 which was either $20 or 1240 points (1240 points = $20 AU), meaning I ended up with a $4.50 discount . That saving would also work for any GoD game (paying in points instead of cash). There was people selling 4800 points for $50 on Ebay, but it seems they've all put their prices up to $70+ .

I just bought a Xbox/Windows wired controller for PC gaming a few days ago; black, Windows packaging. Through only a few days of play, the right thumbstick is squeaking. My launch 360 controller never did this (although that thing is a different pile of poo poo on it's own.) Is this normal? Does it go away on it's own in time or is there something I have to do to make it stop?

When I got mine for PC gaming a while back I just got a wired Xbox controller that had no mention of Windows on the packaging. It worked fine and I don't recall any thumbstick squeaking while I had it. I think Microsoft stopped production of the Xbox Controllers that were marketed as "For Windows", so if it's a "For Windows" one, I think it may be older, but I'm not sure.

What are some 16GB or 32GB flash sticks which are known to work with the 360 and have good enough performance to install and play games off of? The official USB flash prices are ridiculous but I've heard that some brands are really bad and won't work very well.

I'm pretty sure that any flash drive would work with the Xbox 360, just be sure to format it as FAT32 so the Xbox will see it. As for working good, I'm not the guy to ask...

The a button on my wired 360 controller is getting real sticky. Sometimes if you mash it enough it'll be good for a bit but it clicks too. What's the fix here? I barely ever use it.

You probably have to open it and clean it. Apparently it's pretty easy, but you need a specific screwdriver. Torx Security something.

An old toothbrush works well for light cleaning on controllers. Get it moist and you can clean gunk off the outside and fix minor issues of button sticking. Anything more and you'll need to open it up though E: if you have an electric toothbrush then keep an old brush head around for just this purpose. Works great for TV remotes as well

And if you need a good cleansing chemical for it there's Simple Green. It is often found in automotive sections of stores and you can get an outright indusrial amount pretty cheap. I haven't used isopropyl alcohol to refurbish gaming stuff since.

Opening them is easy (check the net to find out what kind of screwdriver is needed, they should not be hard to get at hardware stores). Putting them back together is a little trickier just because you have to hold several things in place at once against gravity to make everything fit snug again.

One thing to note is that you need a single piece driver. A bit probably won't work because some of the screws are really deep.

I use a bit and for the deep wells I just grabbed a knife or box cutter... stick it in the well and start going in a circular motion. The plastic is ridiculously soft, like soap, and it just carves right out. Going in a circular motion produces a smooth bevel so it doesn't look ugly or anything. I mean if you can get a single piece then that's fine, but if not then it's definitely doable with a bit.

When I did call center support (it still hurts inside) we had to make ourselves repeat the call introduction at least three times, then inform whoever is on the other end that we can't hear them and call back. In your case just shove the phone's mic up your nose at all times so they know you are there.

I saw this on Joystiq today. I don't know anything about how good/not good the suggested specs are:quote:Microsoft's new console will contain an AMD-provided CPU with 8 cores running at 1.6GHz apiece alongside 8GB of DDR3 RAM. The machine will also use a GPU running at 800MHz, and feature a built-in hard drive. How good is this? How much of a leap is it compared to the 360? Also, I didn't understand this part: quote:DF offers up some more context for the leak as well, noting that there could be a significant performance gap between the new Xbox and Sony's next PlayStation, specifically with regards to its graphics processor. Does that mean the NeXtbox is going to be more or less powerful than the next PS, or is it just ambiguous?

The rumored CPUs are basically on equal footing, but the rumored PS4 GPU is more powerful than the rumored Xbox GPU. As for the RAM, it'll basically be lower memory, higher bandwidth for the PS4 vs. more memory, lower bandwidth for the Xbox, but I have no idea how that'll shake out performance-wise. Supposed legit devkits have been revealed at various times with either amd only setups and intel/nvidia combo setups. The one common thread has been some form of multiple core x86-64 CPU with some form of GPU that's based on commodity end user GPUs.

The Midniter posted:I saw this on Joystiq today. I don't know anything about how good/not good the suggested specs are: Roughly, the Xbox will have something resembling a Radeon 7770 GPU, while the PS4 will be more akin to a Radeon 7870 GPU (assuming those specs are accurate). Both are way better than the current 360 GPU, but if this gen also lasts 8+ years then the PS4 could have the prettier games in the long run. I'm most curious about the memory differences, 4GB in the PS4 seems small but DDR5 is way faster. The 8 core CPU is also pretty interesting, in theory that could allow for a fair bit of multitasking for non-game apps. Given the current state of games it's doubtful we'll see them take full advantage of that many cores anytime soon.

I got my 360 in holland, and made my xbox live account there as well. I moved to the UK quite some time ago and I'd really like to get bbc iplayer working on it. I can't seem to figure out how to change my settings though so that it recognizes where I am I've looked at language and locale settings, set both to English and UK but Dutch still seems to pop up in odd places and iplayer fails to show.Any ideas on how I can fix this?

I posted this in the GPU megathread in SH/SC, but it seems appropriate for here too: The closest thing to 'factual' information we've had was the leaked design document from 2010 back in June, and the Durango dev kit that got onto eBay a couple months later that had specs "similar to a high-end PC". That said, it seems we're at the point that next-gen specs can be safely speculated on given currently available PC hardware specs and what's reasonable to expect in a ~$400 console, unless Sony pulls another Sony and has some overengineered Cell processor-type technology waiting in the wings. One thing to note about Wozbo's post [in the GPU thread] - while I'm in no way endorsing the journalistic chops of most gaming sites, as far as the supposed specs of the next gen Xbox go, the faked rumor substantiated the majority of the specs, only embellishing the CPU's clock speed. The software and X-Surface parts were obviously complete bullshit on the hoaxer's part, but you can't completely discredit the (mostly reasonable) specs just because some guy made up a rumor about an Xbox tablet. Though, again, given the state of the majority of games 'journalism', it's pretty advisable to take all of this with a grain of salt. ^^ I am sure a lot of that is true, but it is also worth noting that everyone already and safely assumes that Durango and Orbis are going to be powerful within a certain window of specs. The only thing of interest left to discover are the specifics which is why this recent rumor and pretty much all others (including the 2010 leak but less so) should be ignored. They simply don't tell us anything useful which we didn't already know with any greater degree of confidence than the educated guesses made here on SA. The only difference is how they are presented. imo, even those specifics don't matter much beyond the window of specs we already assume. It's going to play games and it will have lots of games to play which all use various amounts of the box's potential, and that potential is more than what we had last generation. That's really all that matters for most people outside of the desire to hold entertaining discussions on the internet.

I can't imagine that Sony will make the same mistake twice, and I can't imagine Microsoft wasn't paying attention. Taking that approach is really all-or-nothing; if your wacky futuristic architecture costs too much on the consumer end, you won't become the leader and standard. If you're not the leader and standard, having an oddball development environment will gently caress you up.
