So, I was looking at one of these stupid things that my unit handed out to me before the long weekend, and it really baffles me. It's a card for free taxis between the typical drinking "oh gently caress how do I get home" hours. Cab fare paid for courtesy of Uncle Sam. On the face it looks like it makes a lot of sense, get people home whilst drunk, but really, it just saves some dudes some money at tax payers expense. People still drive drunk, people still get caught. The people who have no plan / no impulse control still drive out, get plastered, drive back drunk as gently caress, and get caught (hopefully). Dudes who are gonna do the right thing are gonna do the right thing, and dudes who are gonna do the wrong thing are still gonna do the wrong thing. How is this really helping anyone (besides saving dudes doing the right thing a few bucks)? And how much is this costing? I thought the Army would WANT people to get caught with DUIs - it's like the easiest way to chapter a motherfucker out. And if this isn't endorsing the culture of alcoholism I don't know what the gently caress. Or maybe I just hatin' cause I didn't get a chance to use it.

I thought those things were a fund put together by the unit. Usually around $500 to $1,000 and once you used it, you had to pay it back so other people could use it? And it should cover the fare to the first nearest city/party area. In Vilseck whenever I took a cab that couldn't get into the gate, we usually just called staff duty to pick us up at the gate. No, this is a different thing. We've got the emergency cab fund of about 60 bucks sitting at squadron staff duty (which is plenty because we're CONUS). This is, from what I understand, basically a carte blanche for cab fares. What I'm thinking is that the squadron commander is so sick of getting made fun of for all the DUIs under his command that he's just going to throw money at the symptom, actual problem be damned. Or brigade CO, whichever.
