When better than a meaningless dead rubber where the opposition is probably still trying hard for the sake of dignity?
The rotations should cease once the bowling attack gets a bit older and can handle the workload. There must be something up with the fitness program or something with all these guys getting soft tissue injuries.

Um... what? Didn't he make 80 or something? If he's injured then he shouldn't play but his form seems OK.

Maxwell is probably going to be there for India as the second spinner no matter happens in this Sydney match. Hopefully he won't be poo poo.

Watson's average with the bat for the last two years is 28. That would be perfectly fine if he was playing in the lower order as an all-rounder, but he's coming in at number 4 with no ability to get quick singles and twos and no ability to make big scores. He'll probably be kept in the middle order for a while after he gets fit though, the selectors seem obsessed with the idea that everybody needs to be able to bat and bowl.

Apparently instead of a replacement batsman for tomorrow the selectors have decided to play five bowlers. I know Sri Lanka have a pretty poo poo bowling attack so Johnson at 7 isn't that big of a deal, but surely this should have been a chance to bring in a new batsman and let them get some experience..

This gives instructions on how to delay stuff in VLC while using your radio or something and somebody mentions how to do it with the online stream in the comments. I found that listening to the stream through VLC took the stream from being a little bit ahead, to being really far behind though.

I'm glad to see Starc going at 3.9 an over and Johnson going at 4.25 an over on this green pitch. I'm sure they'll do well on Indian pitches.

This could mean that this could be a potential ashes team.

Warner
Cowan
Hughes
Watson
Clarke (c)
Haddin (vc)
Wade
Starc
Siddle
Lyon
Bird

That would be the best series, even better if Johnson was in.

I once played a junior game years ago where this exact thing happened. The batsmans bail got knocked off, everybody appealed, but the umpire at that time was the coach of the other team and he was also really loving drunk, so he said the wind or the wicket keeper had knocked the bail off.

There's this article on cricinfo about Healy being unhappy with Wade's glovework

http://www.espncricinfo.com/australia-v-sri-lanka-2012/content/current/story/600442.html

I find it interesting because I don't think I've ever seen Healy have a strong opinion on anything.

quote:

Healy said he could not understand why the selectors had chosen Wade ahead of Brad Haddin at the start of this summer. However, he also said that he believed Queensland's Chris Hartley, 30, was the best pure gloveman in the country but that he was unlikely to earn an opportunity at international level with Wade, Haddin and Tim Paine all ahead of him in the queue.

He believes Hartley is the best gloveman and Hartley has a better one day batting average than Haddin this season. Makes me wonder why, if they're looking to the 2015 world cup, the selectors didn't choose Hartley over Haddin for this series.

The run rate is bad because the bowling was really good until Malinga and Perera came on. Putting Smith in for Khawaja has turned out to have been a terrible idea because in the early conditions we needed somebody like Khawaja.

clarified that Usman Khawaja was dropped for Steve Smith under a pre-defined plan to give each batsman one game.

This seems to be a really bad way to select a team. Khawaja would clearly have been the better choice to play on last nights wicket, but because of something they decided on beforehand, they felt they had to drop him for Smith.

Back when he was 21 or so there were some articles calling him the next Steve Waugh or something. I don't know why, maybe it's just because Steve Waugh has (or had, idk)a house at Alfords Point and Smith lived there as well. I can't really see anything else that's possibly similar.

I used to watch Smith play twice a week back in junior cricket when he and my brother played on the same teams. I couldn't even stand watching him back then. I usually just turn the TV off when he comes out to bat these days.

Actually, last year was a return tri-series too from memory.

That's a good point and I completely forgot about that somehow. I am an idiot. :v:

I fault him for that run out that made Cowan look like an idiot. If you call "1" you don't then run for a second unless it's really easy.

gently caress this poo poo.

Tinkering with selections can only do so much though. Bailey has been our best batsman for 12 months and he was out first ball. Hughes made a century two games ago. You could make the argument that Clarke, Warner and Wade didn't have any recent matches under their belt so that affected their performance but Clarke was out resting his hamstring, so nothing could be done about that. If Wade and Warner weren't rested for the first two games then at some point we're expecting them to have played the 6 tests here, 10 ODI's and then the first test in India a week after the final T20 game here. Ideally Moises would not have been in the team, and it would have been Watson, but that wouldn't have mattered against a swinging ball homing in on his giant front pad.

What it comes down to really is we're poo poo at ODI's and we're even more poo poo when the ball is swinging

Glen Maxwell is in for Clarke. Replacing a specialist batsman with an all-rounder that averages 27 in a team that's a bit light on good batsman was clearly the most sensible thing to do.
