Right, I've been meaning to start one of these for ages, now is a good a time as any I suppose! Backstory (for those who care) Being a chubster snuck up on me. I was a bit overweight for most of my teens - not unheathily so but I was not what you'd call thin. I went to college and started work in a pub. I drank a lot - in particular cider, at least 2-5 pints a night. There are around 200 calories in one pint of cider. I did not know this. I also ate junky food, often eating at the pub between shifts. Chips with chilli and cheese on top was a favourite. I guess the nature of the job kept me from getting too fat though. When I was 21 I went to Australia for 3 months, and put on a lot of weight. I ate and drank like I always had, and I guess the lack of any exercise or job that kept me moving made me balloon. When I returned I remember weighing myself and being shocked that I was 15 stone (210lb). This was the heaviest I had ever been. I constantly thought 'I'll start the diet tomorrow' but never got round to it. I passed my driving test too so all the walking/cycling I did was out of the window! Pics at my heaviest- ![]() (ahh look at me smoking in a pub) I got a job working in a cafe which, while being an active job, also meant I had unlimited access to all the chips, bacon and ice-cream I could eat. I took advantage of this and although I lost a bit of weight was still a big girl. It was around this time I discovered the calories in a pint of cider and switched to vodka/spirits. I actually lost about a stone after doing this. In early 2003 I finally had a bit of an epiphany...I spent so long thinking 'oh if only I had started a diet 3 months ago I would be thinner now' that one day I finally decided to START the thing. I remember standing in the kitchen of the cafe and thinking 'make today the start of that 3 months' ![]() Me at about 145lb I did rather well. Due to having an active job, being young and eating not much but home made soups and stir-fries, I managed to lose 3 stone in 3 months, and got down to 10 stone (140lb) at my lightest. I also started my first serious relationship which helped with my self-esteem. However it got to the point where my friends and family started worrying about me, I was losing around 3 pounds a week and as far as they could see I was becoming disordered/anorexic. I don't believe I ever was (definitely not anorexic), but it did get me obsessing about my weight for the rest of my twenties. Even at my lightest I believed my thighs were still fat. I was thin, but now I believe it was what we call 'skinnyfat'. I didn't exercise at all, just watched what I ate like a hawk. This was fine, I gained a bit but I managed to maintain this weight for years. As I reached the end of my twenties I got up to about 168lbs. At about the same time my marriage ended due to a rampant alcoholism problem. I had a bit of a mad phase where I did not drink alcohol but did lots of drugs and partying, and lost a load of weight. Anyway to cut it short. Around the time I joined these forums I met my current SO who is one of those people who can eat anything and never put on weight. He is my height (181cm) and weighs 140lb. Me at my skinniest. He is skinny. I didn't realise how skinny I was. Over the last few years my weight has crept back up again. I got up to 182 last year. Now I am firmly in my 30s and it is not as easy to lose weight as it was when I was 22! I am happier than I was then, I am coming to terms with the shape of my body (pear 4 lyfe) and I'm enjoying eating food and not internally calculating how many calories I've eaten, or whether I can still encircle my wrist with my thumb and pointer. It is actually telling to me now that I can remember my weight fluctuations through my twenties, that's how obsessive it got. ANYWAY I started doing Zumba with a friend for a bit of a laugh last year, and then this developed into training up to do a 5k charity run, which I managed to do in under 30 mins. I was going to the gym and doing lots of cardio and starting to use the weight machines. I got chatting to another friend about exercise and she asked me if I wanted to try doing a program with her that she'd started before. ![]() This was taking me away from the cardio and the weightlifting machines, and into bodyweight exercise, ending with doing heavy lifting. I'm hooked. Although I have only lost a few pounds in weight, I can fit into jeans that I haven't been able to for many years, since my drug binging skinnyfat days. Difference is I feel fit and happy and feel STRONG! I've made pretty good progress, I can feel all these muscles moving around and growing and it is really exciting to feel the changes that lifting barbells is doing to me. ![]() Loving ma traps - just after a workout so nice and swole. (post-Christmas)BIKINI SHOT!!!! ![]() So this is where I am as of this morning. Stats! Height- 181cm Weight-178lb Hips- 44 inch Waist- 29 inch I have ALWAYS hated my butt and hips, and one of my main goals is to get a nice round squat-butt! I am really interested to see how swole I can get too. Being as I am a tall girl it's be cool to look like some sort of awesome Valkyrie/Amazon woman. I'm on Fitocracy as Rondette, and here is an example of my most recent full workout. This one was particularly hardcore. (For me) quote:Rondette Tracked a Workout for 1,636 pts Dec 24, 2012 At the moment I am averaging 2 trips a week to the gym but I am hoping to increase this in the New Year to 3. Mon, Weds, Fri. I have quit smoking for 6 months now, and have quit drinking for 4 months. I am happy to talk about either of these things in my log as well, especially about booze troubles, as that has also been a major factor in my adult life. So for my So this is my first post and this is my log! Amazonia awaits!

ABOUT BLOODY TIME, YOUNG LADY. You already look drat good, I'm eager to see what comes next. P.S. I don't know how you gym in the space cat top. The one time I tried it I ended up slimey from the synthetic fabric. Gonna cannibalise the front of the top and attach it to something made of natural fabrics, I think.

Haha, er well thanks for all the compliments, was not expecting that! I have to confess it was kind a of a big deal for me to put those pics of me in my bikini up, it's the first time I've ever taken photos in a bikini, and definitely the first time I've ever willingly taken pictures of my butt. And then put those pictures on the internet to show internet people!!!! It's my major hang-up and I spent most of my life being ashamed of that area of my body. I think between the weightlifting and visiting the Women's fashion thread on this site I have only really started enjoying my body shape in the last 6 months or so. Looking at those shots with a detached eye, I really don't look as bad as my mind had set me up to look. When I was younger (and bigger) someone once said I resembled a Teletubby, and that comment lodged in my brain. ![]() Yep yep Rondette fucked around with this message at Jan 2, 2013 around 06:38 |

Whee! Levelled up today on Fitocracy, I'm now level 16. Hooray for arbitrary points and levelling systems! I was originally going to go to the gym yesterday but was thwarted by the pissing rain we've been living with the last few weeks. Both of the main roads to town were flooded, and the only road open was the one that runs through the tiny rural village that I live in. Cue articulated lorries getting stuck in narrow country lanes, and backed up traffic. So I did a little weirdo workout at home- quote:Rondette Tracked a Workout for 299 pts Jan 2, 2013 I hooped while watching a documentary about Screen Sirens which was really interesting, man Clara Bow was so foxy. I was looking forward to a big old session today but it didn't really happen for a couple of reasons. quote:Rondette Tracked a Workout for 953 pts Today One of the gym trainers came over and started asking me about my goals and targets - which threw me through a loop because I didn't really know what to say! 'squat 60kg' I said, and he asked 'What else?' - 'Erm just to be all round fitter really' Is that not good enough? He also gave me some advice about form and stuff. This was quite useful (even if he did start advertising his services) but it threw me off and made me a little paranoid about getting my form right when he left me to it. I have chatted to him before when he was training with THE ONLY OTHER GIRL I've seen lifting, who did a 100kg deadlift. So it wasn't totally unsolicited, just made me lose my stride I guess. After this I developed a banging headache and called it quits. One thing he did advise was to lay off the heavy squats until I have got my form down, which I agree with but it is now making me wonder if my Toxx target might be a bit optimistic. I'm also quite tempted to have a couple of sessions with him to put together a plan and get some more form tips. It seems to be working for that client of his!

The trainer is sorta correct in laying off the heavy squats - but I would add that squatting with something heavy on your back is very different from squatting light, and just because someone has good form on light squats does not mean they'll have it as the weight gets more challenging. If your goal is to squat heavy, then you have to practice your form with a moderately challenging weight. I wouldn't go pushing to failure but you definitely need to feel some downward force from that barbell, as that really can change the way you squat. I also think that if your form is moderately good (as in good enough not to injure yourself) then there is no reason not to add some heavier sets in there, as you will see more progress that way. After a certain point of competence, working on your technique is more to add to your efficiency in the lift, not stop you getting injured. As long as you're sure you have that level of competence then add some weight. I also don't think your toxx is overly optimistic - it seems very reasonable indeed. Go get it girl!

Ugh, so good. ![]() Might have to have that for tea tonight actually. The name? Not sure, it's one of those 'lost in the mists of time' dealios! Wikipedia says.... quote:Toad in the hole is a traditional English dish[1] consisting of sausages in Yorkshire pudding batter, usually served with vegetables and onion gravy. The origin of the name "Toad-in-the-Hole" is often disputed. Many suggestions are that the dish's resemblance to a toad sticking its head out of a hole provides the dish with its somewhat unusual name. It is rumored to have been called "Frog-in-the-Hole" in the past, although little evidence exists to support this theory.[2] It can also be referred to, less popularly, as "Jimmy toad".[3] ANYWAY Back to exercise. Oh wow .... I am so very sorry for the loss of your eccentric and entirely wonderful aunt. She sounds like such a character. I mean, "I'm sorry for your loss" is so much the usual thing to say, but she seems such the most unique person that I truly am genuinely sorry that she's gone from the world. You also have my sympathies at the huge loss of your auntie...but I also think it's super cool how she's immortalized in her quilt work and that kooky coat as well as the impression that she's left on you and that you have now shared with all of us. I also do love the coat...I don't think I could get away with it, but it reminds me of something I would see in an illustration from like...a unique contemporary retelling of a classic Grimm fairy tale or something. However I have now edged into 'Novice' for my Deadlifts, and 'Untrained' for my Squats. I started lifting in mid-October, so I'm not exactly making quick progress, but as I've said before, I'm not looking for quick results with this! Considering when I started I couldn't lift the 20kg barbell above my head I think I'm doing ok.

Thank you! I know I haven't updated this for a while, I am not impressed with myself. I have been going to the gym at least twice a week, but I've been busy working on a project for college and keep forgetting to update this! (whoops) The one thing I seem to be getting the most of from doing weights is more confidence. I am fairly confident anyway but I just feel a little more...happy...in myself? It's hard to explain, I feel more comfortable in my body. I haven't lost any weight as such, but it's like I'm coming to terms with my shape. I think lifting has got something to do with it, I like that it makes me feel powerful and strong (even if I'm not at EPIC levels of weight lifting yet) and more aware of my body and how it moves, etc. I am almost at the point of getting hilariously evangelical about it, when I see girls slogging on the cross-trainers or whatever, I really want to ask them if they would be interested in trying lifting out. But that breaks many GYM LAWS so I don't. I was also pretty proud of myself on Monday, my gym bud flaked out on me and I was vacillating about going myself, I'd got one foot out of the door and thought 'Nah, I'll leave it until tomorrow morning and play computer games tonight'. I mentally slapped myself into going. Felt good man. The hardest part really can be getting out the door sometimes! My flakey friend also has a lovely SPACE ATTACK CAT t-shirt waiting for me

Good times. I'm coming up to the end of part of my toxx now, to have squatted 132lb. I have managed this once, does that count as a pass? I'd really like to concentrate on my Bench at the moment. My max so far is 66lb and I'd really like to get that up to the EXRX NOVICE strength standard, which for me is 110lbs. What would be a good timeframe for this? Bench is the slowest lift to improve in my opinion, but if you work at it (say you bench twice a week) you can probably put on 5 lbs every 2 weeks...so to get to 110, give it 4 months? I would include less warm-up reps (instead of 45x10, do 45x5) and do lighter "back-off" sets after your heaviest ones, I find that helps build strength really well!
