As well aware, since 1999, the Browns have gone throw more regimes, general managers, coaching changes, quarterbacks and every other possible thing under the sun that you could think of. And as you can possibly guess, that has yet to bode well for the franchise, as it has only been able to net itself only 1 playoff apperance. So as we descend into another cycle of hope, and then crushing of all hopes and dreams within the Northeast region of Ohio, let us talk a look at the candidates mentioned to be connected to the Browns job:

Nick Saban, Head Coach of Alabama

Saban has become the best coach in college football, winning 2 National Championships during his time in Alabama, and currently gunning for a 3rd. An unsuccessful stint with the Miami Dolphins pissed off Jim Mandich so much that he's threatened to fight him the next time the two are in a room together, but prior to that he found success at pretty much every other gig he's been at. At LSU he took home a National Title in 2004, At Michigan State, he came in 2nd in the Big Ten even knocking off one of the best Ohio State teams in the history of their program during his tenure there. He also won the MAC title in 1990 for the Toledo Rockets. His major northeast ohio connections really need no introduction. His alma mater is Kent State University, less than an hour away from Cleveland. And then of course, in 1994 he was defensive coordinator of a squad that had the leagues best ranked defense. As of right now he is the favorite to land the position, but there's been no word whether or not he'd take the position and leave being, you know, God of Tuscaloosa/Satan everywhere else.

Chip Kelly, Head Coach of Oregon

Chip has become well known as an offensive guru that even Bill Belichick has consulted as to how to run a new offense with the Patriots. In 2010, across the board he was named coach of the year in college football by multiple organizations. He has been 45-7 at Oregon, including 4 BCS appearances, 3 PAC 12 titles and an apperance in the 2010 National Championship game. His name was first attached to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers job last year that ended up going to Greg Schiano.

Bill O'Brien, Head Coach of Penn State

O'Brien's name has been brought up by the Eagles as well. After taking over a complete and utter diaster job at Penn State, O'Brien led them to a respectable 8-4 record. Prior to that he worked under Bill Belichick on the offensive side of the ball

other names include Dirk Koetter of the Atlanta Falcons, Josh McDaniels of the New England Patriots (and former McKinley Bulldog), Doug Marrone, HC of Syracuse, Bruce Arians OC of the Indianapolis Colts, and formerly of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns, Mike McCoy of the Broncos, Jay Gruden of the Bengals, Kyle Shanahan of the Redskins, Mike Zimmer DC of the Bengals, Mel Tucker of the Jaguars and Ray Horton of the Cardinals.

The two names that are fully expected to pop up and pretty much not even consider the gig are these two fine folks:

Both of which will be noted for making awkward statements about the franchise, which fans will inevitably attempt to piece together like one would if they were wearing tinfoil on their heads, only to find it's really nothing, and the Browns will be hiring some nobody.

It's a new era with the Browns and Jimmy Haslam, .

he's my 3rd/4th choice, not my first.

like what he's done at bama and the style of play, but the whole dolphins experience makes me quite nervous.

Cowher and Gruden are my 1-2, but those guys are not coming back.

Not too big on the Chip Kelly rumblings. I'd like to see him get a shot in a place like Philly, or San Diego where's there's a better chance at succeeding with his style. In Cleveland? Err,it could get ugly.

Bottomline? This team needs someone who can get this thing off the ground quickly, and keep it consistent. I hate to say it, but they really need to try to make a playoff run this year. The fanbase is growing extremely restless and tired of the "Rebuilding" lies we've been fed for the past 14 years.

EDIT: To add, Twitter is annoying as hell to read right now, because the rumor perpuated by guys like "Incarcerated Bob" are being presented as legit. That and the "OMG COWHER BOUGHT A HOUSE IN AURORA! HE'S COMING TO CLEVELAND" poo poo that goes on within talk radio is a joke. Trying to stick to OBR which has a great writer who posts inside info. on their forums.

Nick Saban is over sixty and according to the Cleveland media nobody over sixty has any desire to coach in the pros if Mike Holmgren didn't.

Also can we please stop throwing Bill Cowher's name out there? He's been out of coaching for 6 years and would never coach the Browns anyway.

Ayup.

I'm a little worried because from a business perspective Chip Kelly makes the most sense. The Browns are a laughingstock or generally ignored by the media, Griffen would have been a boon had the Browns got him (gently caress you Dan Snyder). It would have instantly raised their media profile and they'd have gotten an amazing player to boot. I think a lot of the same things could be said for Kelly. He's hyper-successful, had a really interesting scheme, and has a personality. All of that would make the Browns a real media presence, which is something Haslam said he intends to focus on. His transition to the NFL (especially with our personnel) would be difficult but if it worked the Browns would become such a unique brand of football they'd be hard to ignore.

His success in transitioning is the real issue.

O'Brien seems like the most likely choice but all-in-all I think I'd rather see Saban.

wilderthanmild

If the Browns got Chip Kelly, I am 99% sure Weeden would no longer be our QB because there is no way he can run his style of offense. I am about 50% sure that Colt McCoy would get the spot, since he might be mobile enough to run it. There also a chance we'd try to pick up Vick or Tebow . In either of those cases I'd die a million deaths mentally. I know nothing about Bill O'Brien so I can't comment on him. Saban seems like a great option and his only stint as an NFL HC wasn't too bad at 17-17. The thing I don't like about Saban is he abandoned a team before very quickly for a bigger contract(Miami to Bama) and I would dread having something like that happen to Cleveland.

Edit: Saban was 15-17 in the NFL.

Have the Browns expressed any interest in Mike McCoy? He's a coordinator looking for his first HC gig so he wouldn't be as demanding with stuff like personnel control as Kelly/Cowher, and as an offensive guy he would presumably be willing to bring in a DC who could work around all the good 4-3 personnel they already have rather than convert. He and O'Brien both seem like much better fits for the Browns than Nick Saban or a couple of coaches who have been out of the league for half a dozen years.

His name has been tossed around but I don't think the organization itself has mentioned anything about him. We've got all the building blocks for a strong 4-3, the last thing we need is another scheme change on defense. I hope whoever they do bring in sticks with the 4-3 at least.

This is the best post.

edit: You know, it's pretty funny how everyone is anti-Kelly from this standpoint of "his offense wouldn't work in Cleveland" as in it doesn't "suit our offensive style". What style is that, anyway? Three yard passes and 4-win seasons? That's not a style, that's failure.

I think the idea is that there's so little talent that Kelly would want you'd be looking at a horrific rebuilding process yet again. The problem of course assumes that this rebuilding would be worse or notably different than all previous 4 or less win rebuilding seasons the Browns have been locked in since man stood upright and played football.

Believe it or not the Browns are loaded with young talent but bad coaching directly cost them at least 3 wins this year, possibly more. Like "I will call this dumb play, whoops we lost" bad. They'd need to get a new QB to run any offense beyond fun n' gun, so I expect some turnover but the roster doesn't need to be changed very much aside from that.

Dispensing unwanted fitness advice since 2005. P.S. Squat more! BEEFCAKE!!!

The idea that Kelly wouldn't adapt his offense to the players available seems kind of dumb. Isn't the whole point of going with Kelly to get an innovative guy who doesn't just run the same old poo poo into the ground even if it doesn't work? The Patriots are supposedly heavy adopters of a lot of Chip Kelly's passing concepts, and they're using maybe the most immobile statue pocket passer in football to do it.

Put another way, if Kelly is such a stubborn dumbshit that he won't change his system to fit the pro game and the players he has at hand, why the hell would you hire him?

TheGreyGhost
Feb 14, 2012

Honestly, short of the whole, "Who's the QB?" question that bringing in Chip raises, I feel like he would be a pretty darn good hire for this current incarnation of the Browns. We have receivers capable of working in space (Gordon, Little, Benjamin, MoMass to a lesser extent). We have two RBs (TRich and Hardesty). We have a young, athletic O-Line. And we have enough pieces in place on defense that a decent DC hire will be able to keep that from reaching dumpster fire levels. I really don't have an issue with Chip at all, and I'd be a lot more upset if we brought in someone who wants to go back to grind-it-out football that doesn't work for us at al (i.e. Saban).

gently caress it, trade Weeden for a midrounder. Find us an athletic option QB without significant brain damage (Sorry, Colt). Give Chip all the control over offensive personnel he needs. Run some futuristic modern offense for the first time ever. Shoot for the moon. Give no fucks. There is nothing to lose when experimenting with this factory of sadness.
