![]() PAX ["The world's largest video game festival"] is leaving the USA for the first time ever and it's coming to Melbourne, Australia. What? If you don't actually know what PAX is, it's a really good idea to just go watch the PATV Episodes about PAX and then just come back here. Where? The festival will be held at the Melbourne Show Grounds When? The 3-day event begins July 19th, 2013 and continues until July 21st. Doors open at 10am each morning (8am for exhibitors). The Exhibit hall closes at 6pm each day, the Non-exhibit hall (whatever that means?) is open until 11:30pm the first two nights, but everything's over and done with by 6pm on the last day. Exhibitors are allowed to pack-up and move out the Monday morning after the event if they need to. edit: Greenbuckaneer explained the "Exhibit hall" dealy: GreenBuckanneer posted:Pax is divided into two sections: Exhibit Hall and everywhere else. How? It's all sold out now. When you register, you're asked if you want to be eligible to take part in the Omegathon. If you don't know what that question means, you probably didn't watch the episodes of PATV I linked above. It's described on the PAXAus site as: "The bracket style tournament comprised of randomly selected preregistrants takes place across the three days of PAX. Each of the games played are publicly announced weeks before the show, but the secret final round is always a surprise. Will it be an unreleased, never-before-seen title? How about a game you haven't thought about since the 80s? What about a giant claw machine? Perhaps a combination of them all? You never know with the Omegathon, but if you attend all the elimination rounds throughout the weekend and the final round on Sunday, you'll see history be made!" Who? I'll slowly update this as I'm given the green-light to. Sorry about the indie-centric focus, but that's what most of the info I get is about : Nintendo - I literally have no other details than "Nintendo will be there" at the moment. Indie Games ![]() ANTICHAMBER|BLACK ANNEX|DUET|FRACTURED SOUL|INFLUX|MACGUFFIN’S CURSE ![]() Panels? I'll update this with the schedule of panels as I get my poo poo together. Bear with me. What do/don't I bring? Earlier in registration, you were able to purchase BYOC tickets, which allowed you to bring your PC with you for LAN gaming. Those tickets are all sold out, but definitely bring a hand-held console of your choice if you're interested in meeting other people to fight pokemon with or trade 3DS dong pictures or whatever the gently caress you do with Nintendo consoles. You can bring your kids and babies, but you can't wheel a stroller around in the "exhibition pavilion". You can bring your cosplay stuff if you wanna dress up. I had to sign a contract saying I wouldn't bring any booth babes or have anyone at the stands wearing "scanty" clothing. I'm not sure if this applies to attendees who are just cosplaying, though. You can bring a toy weapon, but they all need to be pre-approved when you show up. They'll be fine as long as it doesn't fire projectiles at all. Nerf guns need to be incapable of firing. No airsoft weapons (they're illegal in Australia). Nothing that would look like a real firearm at "second glance". No real blades, no ceramic blades, no knifes, syringes, etc. Okay, let's go! It'd be great to get an idea of which, if any goons are going so we could all look at each-other's terrible bodies face-to-face and bounce ideas around about accommodation and travel and what not. I'll keep this section updated as I can as more people decide to venture into the city for the festival. Also, I forgot to mention Did I forget to mention something important? It's late, let me know if there's important stuff I need to put in the OP. Mug fucked around with this message at May 14, 2013 around 08:39 |

Kinda disappointing that I'll probably miss a chunk of the show while running my stand, but I'll see how flexible I can manage to make it be.

Pax is divided into two sections: Exhibit Hall and everywhere else. Exhibit hall is where all the guys have their game booths and demos and stuff. In the evening, they close this up and put guards up to protect the IP inside. Everywhere else is things like, rooms for press to see games, little QA with the developers, music performances, tabletop gaming, console gaming, etc. I'm not going there, but I'm an enforcer at other PAXs if you have a question in particular ![]() edit: The booth babe thing is probably because of jessica nhigiri or whatever her name is, that's around they started enforcing it because some lady complained about her kids and it blew up from there. Ladies (and dudes too) can't be dressed too scantily but can rep the games if dressed like a character. Generally they also need to know about the product so that they aren't there as window dressing.

I'm not 100% sure how to go about accommodation for the four days over the event. Me, my wife and two kids need to stay somewhere but it looks like it costs like $1000 or more for that kind of thing? Am I looking in the wrong places or something? What are you people doing for accommodation who are travelling to get to PAX?

Grabbed a three day pass before they got sold out ages ago. Sceptical as to whether I'll actually show for the whole weekend though.

My email address isn't really private, it's rocketreplay at gmail.com. I'm always on Skype if you use that, my name is manfightdragon. Add me, if you use Skype, would be cool to co-ordinate with other goons going to PAX either way.

So I'm gonna go ahead and bump this thread back because as far as I understand there's a PAX East on at the moment or something, right? I figure once that's over and PAXAus being the next actual PAX happening, we might actually have some people looking forward to it as the next big thing. I'm submitting my game to the judges for the Aussie Indie Showcase in about ten days and if I am judged positively I get two more exhibitor passes and some kind of enormous booth space there so I'm working my arse off to get a beta demo ready. Hopefully I get a good result but either way I've got a space booked at the indie pavilion so people better come talk to me there at least.

I'm doing a panel at PAXAus with Joe Wintergreen (that guy who made GabeN come to australia that time) and 4 other indie developers. Come see me talk about whatever. I think we just give the mic to the audience for it and answer questions. I got a list of every indie developer who's going to be at PAX but I think it was accidentally sent to me so I'll wait until most exhibitors have already been announced before updating the OP with a list of "who will be there". Nintendo was just confirmed, though.

Pretty big leap of faith to drop that amount of money on the first PAX when the schedule hadn't even been announced. I wanted to go but just couldn't justify that amount of money (flying from Perth) on something relatively unknown. Super interested to see how it all goes so I can possibly make plans for next year.

Here's a bunch more indie developers who will be in the "Indie Pavilion"![]() "Man Fight Dragon" (me) is listed there because they haven't processed my cancellation yet, but I've been upgraded to a space in the Indie Showcase so I won't be in the pavilion. The Indie Pavilion is a heap of these desk lookin' things that developers share to showcase their games in a large discounted space. It's kinda enough room for 1 monitor, and you can't sit at them. They kinda sucked and I'm glad I'm not restricted to that space anymore, especially since I'll be demoing a PC game.

I did get tickets for this. I have not booked a hotel or anything on the other hand though. Honestly I was thinking of flaking out on it because I have been super busy the last two months and it has diminished any excitement to go anywhere that is not a bed these days. Ill see how I feel closer to the event.

I got a three day pass for it. Going with a bunch of friends down to Melbourne for it. It will be a bit of a drive from rural NSW though, hoping to only spend two nights there and arrive/leave on the first and last days. Thank goodness I am not living near Newcastle any more. I'm not really sure if there is going to be enough interesting stuff there to make the 3 days worth it but at the very least it should be a good time out with friends.

I'm not going to this (will see how it turns out and think about it next year) but they'll be running trains to the showgrounds for the event. Normally trains don't run on that line except for racing events at the racecourse or the royal melbourne show is on at the show grounds. http://ptv.vic.gov.au/news-and-even...y-21-july-2013/ So you'll be able to catch a train from Flinders Street Station (melbournes 'central' station, ignoring the station to the north called Melbourne Central) or Southern Cross (Spencer Street) Station. Trains will only go there until midday, after that you have to get a train nearby and catch a tram the rest of the way.

If it's anything like East or Prime, driving into/out of pax for all three days will be a nightmare. There is just so many things to do, even after pax closes. Then again my experience as an enforcer is a bit tainted by all that "go to bed at 3 after i've been drinking, wake up at 7am"
