This may or may not be correct.

That reminds me of much I've always wanted to see more Suikoden Tactics games. I thought that was the perfect platform to expand on the stories of the smaller wars and conflicts that have been mentioned but never seen.

Yeah, this. They're done by hand by simulatenously match the Suikoden III design while looking like actual Fire Emblem portraits.

Finally got caught up on the LP and really love you showing off all the little cutscenes for everyone. I actually been playing along with the game as well, going with Chris as the Flame Champion, but I didn't know there was a prompt to change your character name to the Flame Champion's name during the big speech. Think I am going to reload so Chris isn't calling herself FC's name now.

Also I really enjoyed the Suikoden IV LP that Vilkacis did.

From what I can tell from the little I've played of it, some real effort was put into it, so I'd like to put some effort into showing it off, including my feeble attempts to translate it as I go. (Might just do one chapter, my Japanese is not that great and there's a lot of kanji -- but I will show off that one chapter in full!)

Yeah, I left it out because it felt kinda stupid. Way back when I was first planning on the LP, I'd briefly thought that I would get you guys to vote on it, but then decided against it.

An Interlude - Early Reveal

Before we move on with the story, there're two things I wanted to show off.

First, remember this fight back in Geddoe 2? It's one of the two fights I lost on purpose, and at the time I said it was because I wanted to avoid some dialogue. I also promised to show it off when the time came.

Well, that time has come. I showed off how to win the fight before, so I'm leaving it out this time.

Upon winning, we see the two sides still having a stand-off.

: "That's what they say, Bishop."

: "But I don't have time to waste on you."

Luc raises his arm, preparing to cast.

: "Huh?"

This is the line I was avoiding.

Everyone goes on the defensive.

And then Luc summons a giant gently caress-off tornado.

And Luc and Sarah vanish before they can recover.

While no one in the scene actually says "YOU ARE LUC," revealing that the Masked Bishop has the True Wind Rune is a pretty clear indication to his identity to anyone who played the first and second games.

The second fight I lost, the one right after we get True Fire, has a similar (but less blatant) reveal.

So here's the proof of victory, again, and let's see how the scene changes.

: "I can't believe my eyes. You can't have awakened the power of the True Rune already."

: "Impossible..."

: "I guess we have to admit it...."

This is the line I wanted to avoid here. Revealing that he has a True Rune isn't that shocking, but I gave it a lot of thought and decided to err on the side of caution.

Luc makes a move like he's about to do something nasty.

But then the fire thing happens, and from there the scene is the same, except with our three heroes standing instead of kneeling on the ground in pain.

So there you have it. Actual update coming fairly soon -- I had to split it into two since it was getting long.

Chapter 5.1 - Geddoe Part 1

Welcome to the final chapter of Suikoden III.

We pick up pretty immediately after where we left off, with Hugo's return to Thomas' Castle, complete with the party members you had for the end of the last one.

The scene actually immediately jumps to Hugo's room. It's sort of a weird cut, personally I think he could have just asked the question downstairs, but it's kind of a petty thing to gripe about. At the very least, they needed the first bit to set the time, since things have kind of jumped around in the past.

You can say yes, but I'm gonna have a look around the castle first.

First up, we've got a new article to read, given Chris' shiny new True Rune.

We've also got some letters. The Thomas one is one I've already showed off (thanks to my alternate runs), so I'll leave that one out.

We can go to sleep now, though.

: "Well then, please rest. I will prepare some hot water for you."

How kind of--

Wait, where are we.

Welcome to the Circle Palace, the closest thing we will ever get to seeing what Harmonia looks like.

Also, I guess this clears up exactly who Nash was working for.

: "Yes, it appears he is after the Five Elemental Runes for his own personal gain, and not for the benefit of Harmonia. It's likely they had something to do with the riots in the Lizard and Karaya Clans. This is before we tried to move their armies."

: "We should act quickly."

Sasarai cuts off the conversation, noticing something wrong.

: "Wha-? Who's there!"

I'm so mad I missed the last word of this screen.

Luc, you're not very good at camouflage.

: "It took you long enough to notice me. You should be more careful."

Sasarai cuts in.

He's talking about an event in Suikoden II where the two met on the battlefield. Basically, Luc pulled out his True Rune to drive Sasarai, who was freaking out because they look the same, out of the area, so the good guys wouldn't have to worry about Harmonia breathing down their backs as well as the bad guys already there. Luc seemed to have a bone to pick with Sasarai then, and it looks like he's still got it now.

Sasarai seems much calmer than last time the two were face-to-face, though.

This is a reveal. For once, anime sameface syndrome actually has plot relevance.

: "I ordered everyone to leave the room. Do you intend to defy temple traditions."

Nash doesn't really have the power to do that, I don't think.

: "I thought I could leave this for the end, but my plan has somehow gone awry."

: "What? Who do you think you are?"

: "You want to know who I think I am?"

:suspense:

Oh, okay. Hi, Hugo.

Five minutes in, and we've already had three very abrupt scene changes.

Well, with no clear goal in mind, let's just walk around.

I feel ya, man.

It sure is a lovely day though, huh?

Whoah. Hello there.

: "What is it?"

: "Oh, Hugo! He collapsed upon his arrival."

: "Please... could I see him?"

: "The Flame Champion?"

Franz collapses before he can say anything else.

: "Are you all right?"

No response.

Let's take you somewhere more comfortable, buddy.

I should say so.

Thomas and Sebastian sprint down the stairs to see what's up.

Very eloquent, Hugo.

I wish that he and Cecile were actually carrying him, or that he were at least laying down as he's supposed to be unconscious, but given animation limitations, I'll let it slide.

: "Yes, yes, of course. This way, please."

The scene cuts again as Thomas escorts them to where Mio and Tuta have set up shop, probably.

While he's sleeping, our leaders have a group meeting about it.

: "He is an insect trainer from Le Buque. The town used to be part of the Grasslands, but Harmonia now occupies it."

: "Something must be brewing in Harmonia to bring him all this way."

: "We haven't heard any reports yet, but there is a rumor circulating..."

: "What rumor is that?"

:raise:

: "......"

The doors swing open, as Cecile shows Franz inside.

: "Is this him?"

: "This is Franz from Le Buque. He requested to see Hugo."

: "I am Franz, leader of the Mantor Legionnaires of Le Buque. I traveled here because I heard that the Flame Champion has reappeared. Might I meet with him, please?"

Hugo steps forward.

: "You are the Champion? I think I encountered you at Chisha Village."

Some bad blood between them because of it, I think. He stops himself from continuing that line of thought, and gets down on his knees.

: "What happened to Le Buque?"

Franz hesitates a moment.

: "The people of Le Buque worked hard for the Harmonian army, thinking it would eventually lead to our freedom. Harmonia treats us like third class citizens and imposes heavy taxes; we can't leave our village nor marry without their consent."

: "You were deceived?"

Franz hesitates again, closing his eyes in frustration.

: "They grant freedom only when it serves them. When circumstances change, they take it away."

: "Yes, the Harmonian army suddenly accused us of secretly siding with the Fire Bringer... and threatened to take the villagers to the Crystal Valley as hostages."

: "That's crazy! Taking the villagers as hostages? Do they intend to repeat what they did 50 years ago?"

: "It would not be wise to move the allies now, when they are just now organizing into troops."

: "But if we desert Le Buque now, we could lose the trust of other Grassland clans. Le Buque was once one of us, you know."

Not to mention, Le Buque has been through enough poo poo. I think it's time that things started looking up for them.

: "If we move our army, we'll fall right into enemy hands."

: "Please, wait. We can't move our army around haphazardly."

: "Remember, I was once at the Flame Champion's side. Now, I bear the True Rune in my right hand. That should be good enough."

: "That isn't what I meant."

: "The former Flame Champion knew what it meant to be a hero. A hero's title is just an illusion. What matters is living up to that name. Even if it's dangerous."

By now, we've learned through Geddoe's chapters that, once he gets an idea in his head, he will go through with it. His new companions are just learning that now.

: "But..."

It doesn't come across in screen shots, but Caesar has a nice animation where he pushes himself off of the table he was leaning on. I also like how he admits that his hands are kinda tied here. If they want to save Le Buque, they've got to do something a little stupid.

Geddoe's team can handle it, anyway.

Shortly after...

: "So much for rest and relaxation. Looks like we're going to do this, eh?"

: "You are always ready for action. Why complain now?"

: "I'm not complaining, just commenting."

Not now, guys.

: "That is correct."

: "We are eternally grateful for your kindness."

No problem, bud. I'm sure Geddoe still feels a little bad about what happened with Le Buque at the end of the last war, too.

Yup, business as usual. Ace and Joker are already at each other's throats too.

: "Shall we get started, then?"

Geddoe nods in response, and Ace and Joker clean up their act. For now.

And, off we go!

Hold on.

We're missing one of our members.

: "They're not leaving me behind!"

I set up the party as per usual. Franz is chilling in our guest slot, as well.

Also, I head back in for a second.

First, I get everyone's skills sorted out.

Also, I take care of sharpening weapons. Also, you'll notice that Peggi's dialogue is situation-relevant, which is cool. I think all the stars have changed dialogue -- Juan sure did, as well. It's nothing special, but it's a nice touch.

While I'm here, let's talk about Jefferson.

Basically, he's got a bunch of random titles he can give your people, and some of them can increase skills. These are the only three I bothered with for now. Also, he can't give support characters titles. You can get more titles for him by finding medal sets, of which we had a few lying around. That's about it for him.

Of note, your non-FC party leaders won't read comment box notes.

Can do, Lucia.

Got it, Hugo.

Finally, I add Mio to the party for support. If you're playing along, make sure you throw someone into support before actually heading to Le Buque, and I highly recommend someone who has some amount of healing capacity.

Okay, now we're ready.

You can't actually teleport for this part of the game, but even if you could, I wouldn't suggest it.

A lot of levels can be had by going around murdering Luca Blight ostriches, and having some more levels never hurts. Your off-parties will also tend to be a little underleveled, as well, given that your FC party just went through a dungeon and got into the 50s.

Note, if Geddoe is your Flame Champion, the getting levels bit is less important. Also, yes, he will go to Le Buque alone regardless of whether or not he is leading the army.

Oh, also, Stone Golems are a thing now. They're a little better than the treasure boss version from a billion years ago, but we're a lot better, so they're nothing special.

There's also a new breed of butterflies on the Mountain Pass.

The Grand Holly type monsters have kind of stopped being scary. Jacques and Aila took it out before anyone else got to move.

Also, this jerk is back. Remember him?

Save your Lightning magic, he hasn't gotten any better.

Levels were nice, though.

Not pictured, some pretty good armor and a bunch of Mega Medicines of varying strengths.

That out of the way, let's get to the village already.

Joker turns to Franz.

: "Fill us in on the happenings in Le Buque."

: "They were gathering up women and children, separating them from our soldiers. I barely escaped, but I had to leave my Ruby behind."

: "Ruby?"

: "Yeah, my Mantor."

Well, Ruby is kind of cute, so.

Joker gives her the stink eye.

So does Queen.

: "Well, anyway, we should push forward. We can think about our strategy later, can't we?"

: "Sure."

The troupe is better at thinking on their feet than coming up with big plans anyway.

Okay, to Le Buque.

Hmm.

Nice overhead shot. Feels like we're being watched.

: "Could be a trap."

: "What do you mean by that?!"

: "We can't be too careful. Anything's possible. It's hard to believe someone as visible as you and your Mantor could escape detection while trying to escape."

Joker's reaction here is actually very believable. An enemy soldier just happens to fly right into their home base, after somehow fleeing alone from the most powerful army in the world, and brings them back to a empty village with only one exit nestled into a cliff face without railings where bug soldiers and more could be lurking. From what we know of Franz, he doesn't seem the type to be that good an actor, but he's still pretty suspicious.

I like how our party brings that to attention -- a lot of times a party will just blindly trust whoever comes their way.

Aila is magic, though, and vouches for him.

: "Are you 100% sure?"

: "People waiting to secretly attack are usually nervous, so they smell a little like metal."

You don't say.

: "That's very interesting."

Aila's come so far. :allears: She's telling Ace to shut up with the best of them.

: "Y-Yes, they've got Iku, too, and..."

Yep, this place looks pretty dead.

: "What's going on here? Have they already left?"

: "drat! Where is Iku? Iku!"

Well, we know where she lives.

He leaves the group without a word, and heads inside Iku's home.

I guess he's not feeling too great about the situation. Can't blame him, really.

: "How could they call me a child of Harmonia?! They didn't know how I felt when I was in Crystal Valley!"

: "................"

Franz trembles as he speaks.

: "Then why give up on Le Buque now? Maybe you're just trying to make us feel sorry for you."

: "Ha! You think I want your sympathy? Do you think my love for Le Buque is just some kind of show? You're really something."

Just then, Aila comes storming through.

Hello!

: "What's up this time? The nose knows something new?"

: "Shut up and follow me! Now!"

Whoah there, okay. We're going.

Oh, that doesn't look too good.

: "What is it?"

: "He just landed here on the back of a Mantor. His wound isn't too bad, but..."

Franz rushes over, and kneels down by his buddy.

: "Hey, it's Rick! Are you all right? Where is everybody?"

: "Fr-Franz, they are all at the altar of the insect trainers... They said it was a ritual to obtain a True Rune."

Geddoe leans down.

: "What's he talking about?"

: "That's all I know! I barely got away!"

They don't get anything else out of him. I'm pretty sure he passed out.

: "Just another 'lucky' escapee? Or could he be another lure? One can't believe everything one hears."

Yes, please.

: "Oh no! Can't we get Mantors to fly us there? I don't want to have to walk up that mountain again!"

Yes, please.

: "Well..."

Onward!

To Mt. Senai.

Franz leads, naturally. He's the most emotionally invested.

The group proceeds as quickly as possible.

: "Here we go again."

Ace and Joker both stop for a moment.

: "Shut up! Let's get going. Are you with us or not?"

: "I'm with you!"

With Queen shouting at them, they all run off again.

Not too much going on here.

We didn't get a very good look at the architecture in here last time. I'm still pretty fond of it.

This is also our first time formally going through the gate, as last time we did it was during a cutscene, so here is a hallway that got skipped because of that. Going to the end of the route will go into the open area where we fought Luc that one time, and will also trigger a new scene. So let's see what's happening in there, shall we?

: "This should be it -- this is the deepest we're going to get inside this cave."

Franz takes off.

: "Are you all right, Iku?"

He runs to her.

But is stopped in his tracks by some kind of barrier.

: "What is this?"

The villagers glance around, and a child backs up out of fear.

Over by the shrine.

When did you get here?

Oh, brought a friend, did you?

: "Thanks for the kind invitation."

It should be noted that the group, for this cutscene, is split into two groups -- Franz and our snipers are closer to the villagers, and our front-liners are a little ways off, closer to Luc.

: "You knew we were going to be here?"

: "What do you want with them? It should be easy for Holy Harmonia to get the runes simply by defeating the Grasslands and Zexen simultaneously.

: "So what do you intend?"

: "You should know, since you yourself bear a True Rune. Living an empty life, driven only by the Rune..."

: "Are you also a True Rune bearer?"

I don't know if this line changes whether or not you defeated him in Geddoe 2. My save states were a bit jumbled at the time, so I actually have no idea if I won or lost that battle anymore.

:raise:

Keep that in mind for a while.

: "I have never in my life felt the real world with my own hands."

He's being sort of needlessly obtuse here, but I like the imagery of his talking about mortals while those rather defenseless villagers are in the background.

: "How about you? Have you ever felt like you were part of the real world? Honestly, now."

: "I don't have time to talk about the past."

: "I see. Let's talk business, then. I want your True Rune. Not for Harmonia, but for myself."

With a swish of his hand, monsters appear.

: "This is one of the techniques I learned from my mentor. It connects this world with another one. I need to use it, because it is becoming difficult to deploy the army."

You know, he's being surprisingly civil with his rear end in a top hat-itude.

His mentor is Leknaat, a mysterious priestess who shows up in pretty much every game to talk at the heroes about fate and such, and his "technique" is really just him being really good with a Pale Gate Rune. Which makes sense, if she taught him how to use it, considering she has (half of) the Gate Rune, the parent True Rune to the Pale Gates.

Well, then. I guess it's time to kick his rear end. This time, the gloves are off. I'm not throwing the fight like last time we were here.

Geddoe readies his lightning magic, as per usual. I'm using a weak cast for the moment, you'll see why a little later.

Jacques readies a Boronda Hawk, and Aila gets ready to cast Battle Oath.

Luc also starts casting. It's important to your survival that he uses Pale Gate instead of his True Wind Rune, as he's a little less astounding with that one. Shockingly, Sarah decides not to cast anything.

Jacques goes first, doing pretty great damage considering how the rune works. His output shot up recently since I gave him the swing skill. He can't always double things, but it still boosts his potential output, which in turn boosts his Boronda Hawk damage.

The same reasoning behind that is why Augustine can be absolutely amazing if you get his Swing high enough with Rose Brooches.

Geddoe is up next, striking with magic and destroying the Mirage enemies, as well as putting Sarah and Luc both into critical HP levels.

Which is actually enough to end the fight. :iiam:

Levels for everyone but Aila.

You know, Luc, generally villains need enough power to back up their evil plans. I guess Geddoe is just too much for you.

: "You can't bend me to your will! Feel my True Wind Rune!!"

The screen flashes white as Luc uses his rune.

Geddoe seems unfazed, though, as the True Lightning seems to nullify the attack completely.

: "Ugh!!!! What... what is this?"

: "Could it be... the True Lightning Rune?"

After drat-near a century, it's grown too fond of it's bearer to let another True Rune get the advantage over him.

: "Apparently, our Runes are equally powerful."

Balance of nature. Geddoe really is just too much for you, Luc.

: "Luc, let me help you."

Wait a sec--

Wait a sec--

Our heroes go down.

The only ones not flat on their backs are Queen, Ace, and Geddoe, all three of which have fallen to their knees from Sarah's earthquake.

: "You were tough, but it's all over. Let me take that Rune now."

Pictured: Geddoe being actually mad.

: "I am not asking your permission. We have a special procedure for doing this in Harmonia. It's a particularly painful technique, or so I hear."

There's a pulse of power.

Geddoe grabs his head.

: "I only need one of the other Five Elemental Runes -- Fire, Water, Earth, or Lightning to collect them all. The True Wind Rune that I bear will upset the balance when combined with the True Earth Rune, allowing me to seize your rune."

: "No...."

No.

No no no.

Don't you--

The screen flashes white.

I think there's supposed to be an s there -- the rune is clearly in whatever that weird orb thing is. Something made to trap and hold True runes? That seems like a Harmonia thing.

: "Since you bore the rune for so long, its power hasn't left you entirely."

Oh, yes, it's very comforting to know that Geddoe will die soon rather than immediately. Because that's what's going to happen. You don't just lose a True Rune. Geddoe is dying.

: "Perhaps you will see this as a blessing, Geddoe?"

Luc, you are killing off my favorite person. I am not happy with you right now.

He strolls past them -- not like they could stop him anyway -- with Sarah following behind.

She hesitates to look at the damage, though.

: "I'd like you to extend your stay here a little longer."

Seems he's not quite done with us yet.

Nah, just use his real weakness...casting magic at a enemy army while they are using archers. Somehow that always kills him permanently in Suikoden 1. Which I feel it would been hilarous if somehow that state could been kept in Suikoden 3.

RIP one of the most broken runes in the franchise, stolen by plot magicks

Oh, good - It's my least favorite part of the game. I really like Suikoden 3 overall, but holy poo poo does it invoke a lot of the worst narrative tropes that plague JRPGs.

Agree, this part isn't very good..also it feels really rushed compared to the rest of the game.

Well, the head writer did leave during the project.

Whoever's got the biggest whiskers does the talking.
I WOULD have cried when this happened, but I Geddoe was my FC my first time through so it was the Fire rune that got jacked.

"Eh, I figure I'll just go back to lightning I guess" was my response at the time.

On my Hugo/Chris playthrough though, yeah, I cried.

The enemy of my enemy is my enemy.
Yeah this is as far as I got into the game because 'Dangit Luc! :argh: True Runes don't work like that! You can't just take them!'
Then I did the 'pick it up some time later and replay from the beginning because I forgot all what's happened' bit over and over again.

I won this avatar on a technicality this thick.
Watch as someone comes up with some explanation how that was possible.

You just have to reverse the rune polarity, that's all.

It's Harmonia, if there's a way to steal runes from people then they will know.

Would it be crazy if Harmonia tried building a machine that was powered by a True Rune?

This may or may not be correct.

Yes. Not that it really matters at the moment, but that's exactly the kind of JRPG trope I'd like Suikoden to avoid.

Uhh, weren't the rune cannons of SuikoIV basically True Rune Fuckery? That tree thing was connected to the true runes, wasn't it?

Maybe if I called it 'Interpretive Stabbing'...
They do offer a partial explanation for how Luc is holding the Runes, but not why they can bectaken like that. It's worth noting though that his lines imply whatever technique he's using only works with the 5 Element Runes. I guess maybe It follows the logic of the the element chart in IV, and having multiple just lets him reverse the chart? Best I got.

I have a theory on this, but it would go into spoilers. As such I'm going to wait for an update or two.

You giving me the cold shoulder? How cruel.

Grimey Drawer
To be fair the good guys can't get too many practical True Runes or else they'd have it too easy. And they did need 2 true runes to beat Geddoe's one.

And hey, Geddoe isn't dead (yet)! I prefer having Geddoe sans TLR rather than the other way around. And it's the final chapter, so it's about time you lose the crutch.

I've been sitting here for 5 mins trying to think of a joke to make but I just realised the animators of Mass Effect already did it for me

There's not really much for me to say on it at the moment. It's got way too many kanji for me to translate casually, so I haven't put in the effort of actually looking up what I can't recognize off-hand, but it sure is a FE4 hack to the theme of Sui3, which means it's two of my favorite things smooshed together. I haven't looked into it much further than making sure that I have everything and that it plays with no issues.

Special thanks to my non-goon friend who got wind of it and sent it my way, though.

Is there a way for me to find this? Because I would love to try it. Every link to the thing I can find seems dead.

Short of me giving you a copy? I dunno.

Until I started reading the LP and seeing Alacron's custom title, I was actually wondering if this was some actual revelation from the novelization.

Well, there's a line in the manga where Ace is like "GOSH, BOSS, YOU ACT LIKE YOUR HIS DAD OR SOMETHING," but that's the only think I can think of, and it's still not particularly telling. I'm going to run with it, though.

I needed this laugh with how sad I am about Geddoe's true lightning. :smith: And here he was all "Let's fall into this trap for once."

I wonder if this means Sasarai is good and dead now, too.

Also, when did Aila change back into her old clothes? Was it this update, or did I miss it happening earlier?

Seems like a safe bet. Nash too, possibly. He doesn't have a True Rune, but that was still the wrong place and time for him to be.

Aila changed back a couple updates ago, when the alliance was formed.

I thought that tree was just some weird abomination that grew ammunition-fruits? The Punishment Rune was on Lazlo at the time, so I don't think that one was involved. Soul Eater is accounted for too. What other True Runes were in that game? It's been so long.

It was connected to some other world through some bullshit explained in tactics, but yeah, those were the only True Runes in that game at all.
