UPDATE 7 LIVE! - MOD SYSTEM REIMAGINED, ICE BASE, ASSASSINS, NEWS AT 11!

Warframe is a closed-beta F2P that mixes shooter and sword-play elements. It’s best considered a mash-up of Mass Effect 3: Multiplayer and Borderlands, also very reminiscent of Hellgate: London’s fast action FPS gameplay. The developer "Digitinal Extremes" team experience includes the previous title The DarknessII as well working on Unreal and Bioshock for the PS3.

BEGINNERS INFORMATION

===============
GAMEPLAY
===============
Warframe is a fast-paced over-the-shoulder 4-Player shooter with heavy emphasis on melee attacks. Every player is equipped with primary and secondary weapons, as well as a melee weapon. Each class has up to four useable skills that are unlocked as you r character levels up. Your weapons also level up independently of your character and can be sold or switched to a different character you own. In general, your missions are to invade a ship to perform a certain task, then escape.

==============================
Warframes (Classes)
===============================
Warframe gives you three different options to play as starting out. Each one is reflective of a type of gameplay you’ll be able to experience.
Starter Frames:

-Excalibur (Melee)
The perfect training Warframe: the Excalibur suit allows players to explore the power of Warframes with a balanced set of capabilities. Your first ability known as "Slash Dash" allows you to slice through multiple foes in a forward lunge.
-----------------------------------------

-Loki (Caster-Melee)
Desired by advanced players, Loki offers a variety of reconfiguring abilities. The abnormality of Loki's powers allows players to manipulate the battlefield. Loki is the stealth class and can become invisible for a short amount of time while he attacks.
-----------------------------------------
Mag
"With full command of surrounding magnetic energy, MAG is an expert at enemy manipulation." Mag offers unique abilities that allow you to pull people/enemies around the battlefield, or magnetize a bad guy so that all surrounding gunfire gets pulled into him.
-----------------------------------------
Advanced frames are introduced monthly, join in and collect them all!

===========================
Missions
===========================
Currently, Warframes mission structure is laid out so that you explore ships/outposts near each planet in our solar system. This includes branching pathways that must be unlocked in order to progress to other planets.
Spy: Steal 2-4 sources of information, grants a mod.
Exterminate: Kill anything that moves.
Assassinate: Eliminate a single target.
Sabotage: Destroy a power-core.
Raid
Deception
Capture
Defense: Defend an object from enemy forces.
Endless Defense: Revisit any completed defense map: Every 5 waves will give you a reward, you have the option to take the reward and quit, or try for an even more rare option!
Mobile Defense: Same as defense, but you have to defend three separate locations in succession to complete the mission.
-------
Alerts
-Alerts are special missions that encompass any of the other mission types. However, alerts offer increased and special rewards.
-In order to receive alerts, you must have unlocked the map location to which it appears. (Note: Yellow also counts as unlocked, so you don't have to complete the area to get the alert.)
-To see what rewards come with the alert, select it from the upper right corner of the screen during map selection.
-Special rewards will have a "?" symbol to denote a rare item drop such as a blueprint, artifact, or orikin reactor etc.
------
=========================
Weapons
=========================
Weapons fall into three catagories, you may carry one "Long Gun" such as assault-rifles, shotguns, and sniper-rifles, one "Secondary Gun" such as pistols, sub-machine guns, and knives, and one "Melee Weapon" such as giant swords, daggers, and throwing glaives.
Assault Rifles: Includes Burst, Automatic, and semi-auto variants.
Sniper Rifles: You get your choice between a silent bow of death, or a semi-auto.
Shotguns: Take the Strun out for a spin and press your M1 as fast as you can. Or get to Rank-(4) and get the ultimate shotgun, the Hek.
Pistols: Includes singleshots, semi-autos, and pistol-shotguns, fully automatic bullet spewers and more.
Swords: Longswords, Bo-Staffs, Gauntlets, giant axes, hammers, infected longswords oh my.

================
Movement System
================
Warframe features a robust movement system that encourages fast-paced gameplay. Basic skills are available like sprinting, ducking or jumping, as well as a multitude if advanced features described below:

Melee: Standard melee attack that can be charged up to one-shot regular mobs.

Sprinting Melee: You can charge up a melee attack while sprinting. This makes it easier to cover a short distance when attempting melee your enemies.

Power-slide: While sprinting, press and hold your duck key. You will fall into a slide that keeps momentum on slopes and allows you to shoot.

Flying Power-slide: While sprinting, press jump then the duck key. You will enter the slide position in the air and continue sliding when you hit the ground.

Power-slide Blade Spin: Press and hold your melee key while in the middle of a powerslide. This will cause your character to lurch forward in a spinning fashion, it deals more damage than a normal melee attack. Currently it can one-shot most regular mobs.

Flying Power-slide Blade Spin: Sprint, jump, duck, then melee. This has the most reach out of any melee attack, but can be hard to connect.

Dodging: Tapping your sprint key while pressing a direction will cause your character to dodge that way.

Forward Leap Dodge: Execute a power slide then press jump to leap into the air while performing flips. Note: You cannot shoot in this animation.

Climbing: All characters can climb about 10ft high railings/walls. Note: One of the tile-sets requires you to jump-climb into the ceiling.

Wall Running Sprint next to a wall and hold your jump key, now your sprinting along the wall! IMPORTANT: LEARN THIS SKILL AS GRINEER ASTEROID BASES AND CORPUS PLANETS REQUIRE YOU TO USE THIS.

Wall Run Melee Attack While running, look at an enemy and press the melee button, insta-death.

Vertical Wall Run Sprint straight at a wall and hold jump when you get to it, you'll sprint straight up the wall. (Hold space to slide back down, or let go to backflip off.) IMPORTANT: LEARN THIS SKILL AS GRINEER BASES WILL REQUIRE YOU TO USE THIS.

Stealth Kill Sneak up behind an unaware enemy and wait for the 'context' command to pop up near it's model. Enjoy a unique weapon animation and a stealth kill.

====================
Mod System Guide
====================

Basics:
-With the 7.0 patch, mods have been changed into "cards" that can be upgraded by a process called fusion. Warframe Abilities and Weapon Abilities can both be upgraded a specified amount of times by fusing other cards together. You Warframe and weapon can accept so many of these cards dependent on level. At level 30 with an Orikin Reactor, your Warframe can fit 60 points worth of cards (30 without reactor.)
-Each card has a cost associated with it on it's middle right-side as seen below. This cost increases as you level up the card, but can be mitigated by proper placement, also described below.
-Cards also come in various rarities, class abilities are all rare, frame and weapon upgrades can range from common to rare. You can tell the different by selecting the card, or by looking at its frame; rare cards will have a gold frame.

Below is further information regarding the various features of the modding system.

1. This is the cost-value to upgrade a card. Currently I'm fusing one Fusion Core (From the bottom left.) into the Radial Blast card.
2. These three black blocks are the amount of times the card can be upgraded, as you can see it will take more than one fusion core to upgrade.
3. This is the amount one fusion core (Uncommon) will charge the card. Once the meter reaches full, it will add a white notch to the three described in number two.
-It's important to note that you can fuse any card to another, but if they are the same card you will get more charge per fuse. Fusion cores give the least amount of charge per fuse, and cost the most to fuse.

1. This symbol in the upper left is a positively charged ability. It will be blue in color and reduce the amount of energy the card costs.
2. This is an empty slot with an empty symbol. Placing a card in that slot will change it to positively charged (Blue).
3. This is a card with a symbol that isn't in a matching slot, you don't get the positive bonus unless you move it one to the left.
4. This is a negatively charged slot, the symbol on the card doesn't match the slot, so it increases the cost of the card.
-Your Warframe dictates what symbols will be in each empty slot. This dictates what cards have the option of being positively and negatively charged.

Tagichatn's Platinum Buying Guide - Patch 7
===========================================

Bad Choices
Newer warframes: The starter warframes all cost 75 plat which is $5 and pretty reasonable.
The other ones get crazy expensive for some reason so you're better off farming for them even with all the roadblocks and time that takes.
Credits for platinum: They actually took this out of the store, probably because the exchange rates were so terrible. IIRC it was 90 plat for 60k credits.
Any of the bundles: The items inside are discounted but they were crazy expensive to begin with so they're still not worth it.
Weapons for platinum: Also crazy expensive. For example the Bronco costs 35,000 credits but 190 plat.
That's over $10 for a single pistol. Weapons can also be made from blueprints bought with credits so you only need to farm the materials and not the bp itself like warframes.
Consumables: Don't ever spend plat on revives, you can still start and play missions and be revived by teammates.
If you die solo, you have to start over. I cringe every time I read that some newbie spent all their money on the plat trap.
The omni ammo box also costs some plat for some reason, either watch your ammo or pick a good secondary weapon for when you run out.

OK Choices
Alternate helmets: These do show up in alerts from time to time but it can take a while for one to show up plus you actually have to be available to run the alert.
They only cost 75 plat but make sure you read what the helmets do; some might look cool but actually decrease stats you care about and increase lovely ones.
Ash scorpion helmet! Weapon skins also fall in this category so if you want your hammer to look like you're swinging a giant pair of balls, go right ahead.
Credit booster: This one is kinda subjective too since farming Tolstoj is better credits per minute but I'm sick as gently caress of running that loving mission over and over.
Later missions actually do drop decent credits from containers and enemies so you can do those missions while also farming materials and getting decent xp.
40 plat for 3 days and 80 plat for 7 days.
Color palettes: This is more of a subjective thing since $5 might be worth it if you like to play Barbie Ninja dressup.
However, they've put several color palettes on sale for a single credit already so you're better off using those or waiting for another one.

Good Choices
Weapon and Warframe slots: Weapon slots give you 2 for 12 plat and one warframe slot is 20 plat.
These are one of the few things ingame which can't be earned or bought with credits and are blessedly cheap.
If you plan on sticking around for the long haul, your starting plat should be spent on these.
Orokin potatoes: Orokin catalysts and reactors supercharge warframes and weapons respectively, doubling their available energy.
At only 20 plat a pop, they're decently cheap.
They do drop from alerts from time to time and have a chance of being the login bonus after 7 days but don't count on seeing them there too often.
They show up in alerts maybe twice a week and once again, you have to be online to do the mission.
Sentinels: I was kinda hesitating between OK and good on this but sentinel blueprints cost 100k credits which is a lot of money plus the mats and build cost.
At the moment, they're more cool than useful but you can color customize them and give them useful mods like an AoE stun, shield restore or cloak.
They cost 75 plat ($5) and come with an orokin catalyst although I don't believe their weapon comes with a reactor. Also unlike warframes, you only really need one.
Affinity booster: This item doubles the amount of affinity/xp you gain for 3/7 days for 40/80 platinum.
Not much else to say about it except that it also doubles the xp you get towards your rankups.
The timer does count down when you're logged off though so make sure you have the time to actually play.

Tips and Tricks
=====================

- New Players be sure to read the starter guide! https://warframe.com/game/quickstart
- Grineer Commanders have the Loki Teleport-Switch ability, this is why your randomly being teleported around the map.
- The Cronus has slightly better stats than the starter sword, however there is a lot of cooler poo poo to waste your resources on now.
- Upgrade from the Mk1 Braton to the strun or Regular Braton ASAP.
- You level faster if you play with other people, so try to join games or host your own.
- Ask goons for mod/weapon advice online, there's generally always 4-5 online.

Been playing this since mid December. Thoughts:

Neat concept, awesome dark sci-fi aesthetic, wasted potential.

I feel like the fact that it's a F2P shooter means we don't get any story, sense of exploration, and things get repetetive real fast. The environments are randomly generated from fairly large set of rooms and hallways, but it still doesn't take long before you've seen the same dark hangar bay or ship reactor.

Those things being said, combat is pretty satisfying and the powers are cool. I've only got Excalibur and Mag, and they work very well.

The game's free, might as well give it a shot!

I'm confused. Watching the short alpha trailer this game seems like it's trying to be a fast paced multiplayer deathmatch type game with objectives. I wouldn't even expect a story or a "sense of exploration". Is there something I'm missing?

Edit: I'm an idiot. I didn't realize it was a co-op style game.

They are currently trying to expand the story past it's current death-match iteration. But its much more akin to Mass Effect where your dropped into a 4-player coop that has objectives. Biggest difference is that you have to unlock new locations.

But Al Cu Ad Solte is right, currently there is only one map-set, and its the only set you will ever see. (Randomly Generated)

I only got in yesterday but it seems pretty fun so far. The Warframes they're selling seem pretty expensive seen as the more advanced ones need at least $15 worth of points. Is it easy to farm parts to get them through grinding?

Hmm, not sure if I'm gonna stick with this. There's not much feeling of weight to the characters, which isn't helped by your ability to completely clip through enemies. The aesthetics are really interesting and I like the premise, but I can't see myself sinking enough time into this to actually unlock anything. Shame, I really wanted to like this.

I'm in as MrFahrenheit, seems alright so far. It's very definitely deep-Beta, though. There are other tile sets farther along it seems, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of variation in the random levels. At least it's co-op, and if you can get a few friends to dive in it's pretty fun for a bit. I wouldn't sink money into it yet, though.

No reason to really sink money into it unless you've already maxed out the starter classes. The other upside is you start out with 50 fun-bucks to unlock pro for any of your characters.

811 megs. I just played 2 games, and actually have enjoyed it so far. There's definitely a samey-ness about it - if you want to make the parallel to Mass Effect 3 multiplayer, they need to add a lot more variety and depth to survive the comparison.

Either way, I'll keep playing this, even if it is just a beta.

It seems smooth enough graphically and I haven't had any crashes; however, the lag and the AI's reactions to multiple players give it that beta jank.

Also I kinda liked Digital Extreme's Unreal-Tournament-spin-off-turned-proposed-360-launch-title-sci-fi-stealth-game-that-turned-into-post-Soviet-RE4 game Dark Sector and this has a lot of referential stuff.

Most obviously, the super-suited folk are named similarly to the game's protagonist, Hayden Tehno, and look like the Lasrian armor he wore. Also, the Technocyte virus that was the center of that game is mentioned as being rampant around Jupiter.

Err, more obviously and directly, the design of the Grineer and the Corpus are based on stuff from the original space-ship-infiltrating version of Dark Sector, with the Excalibur warframe looking exactly like a mix of prototype-Hayden's armor and the bio-mechanical technocyte stuff (the Lato pistols are also based on the protagonist's guns).
The solar rail stuff in this trailer is also mentioned in Warframe as your way of inter-planetary travel, and the ships you go into and the ones the Tenno use look a lot like the ones in Warframe (additionally there's the lotus motif found in both the scrapped and the released versions of Dark Sector).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mucf3kdVzes
I guess this is pretty much the F2P retooling of the early Dark Sector concept, with loot grinding co-op instead of solo stealth action. And there's also technocyte infections and possibly a dopey third person shooter protagonist with a Krull glaive founded the ancient order of shoot n' slash agents
edit: also actually listening to the trailer, the Grineer are mentioned by name so yeah this is basically the ~ re-imagining ~ of Dark Sector based on the original version of Dark Sector.

That's enough stupid obsessive poo poo, I'm playing the game as NovaPolice and trying to get used to playing with a controller again.

I just started the tutorial, and rotating my washed out online future-homonculus at speeds rivaling Big Rigs while pivoting the camera is the most fun I've had in a game all year. No way are you topping this, Warframe.

I'm Wafflehouse and I'm not sure what makes solo play different from online play. The stealth and shooting mechanics are busted and help create a jarring stop-and-go pace where you hack away at scores of enemies for at least several minutes longer than it took you to run up to them one at a time from across the room. Or just run past them while you are helpfully told you are undetected until a complete-the-line puzzle appears, which you do not complete fast enough to avoid detection, but the enemies disappear anyway.

They've got some great ideas, I hope they find a model that works.

This look cool. One thing I noticed though, this game looks eerily similar to this early PS3/360 concept called Dark Sector. Dark Sector was later released in a completely different form, and the original concept was apparently canned forever. Check this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzsLrcTNfO8. I was SUPER STOKED for Dark Sector, so I am really curious if this is by people from the same team.

I kind of wish they added a note about vertical movement to the tutorial. On the first map I was in, all of us got stuck when we had to climb up through a hole in the ceiling. It took a few tries to figure out that a forward jump at the ledge would automatically kick into a climbing animation.

That really doesn't make a lot of sense to me because the only people who can provide access are people who have already invested money in the game?

If you have beta-access you can view the forums. (And I assume also if you get one of the free beta keys currently being advertised.) Otherwise you can just sign up and wait to be put in beta, which then your account will allow access to the forums.

Edit: Totally saw Lemon King on the forums. Tell us the secrets, we know you have them.
I have them, and I believe DE patched out one hole already after the 5.2 patch.
e: The game has an Clan System built in so a Goon Group wouldn't be too hard to get working.

So basically it's GunZ, but in space, and also without K-Style or any other actual cool things.

There are shades of that game's Quest Mode in this.

SHEESH

This really is a shitload of fun. Grabbed beta keys for me and my friends, and four people on the first few maps is ridiculous. Hope there's some way to get Platinum without real money sometime, or I'm never getting some of this poo poo.

DARK SEXY, I LIKE IT
AND CAN'T WAIT.

Like someone said, if you have a minor internet hiccup you'll get dropped down into solo mode like that. There's also a bunch of fiddly things to improve like occasional camera issues that you would expect out of a beta. Otherwise SPACE NINJAS WOO!

Every gameplay element but Revives and "Pro Mode" for weapons/characters can be purchased with in-game credits. You actually can make credits really fast by selling your extra mods that you'll never stick on your character. After about six hours of playing, I unlocked the Lex and Burston.

And for those wondering, the forums has a thread that shows you boss locations where you can get the drops to build other warframes. I'll put a link in the op tomorrow about it.

Also, created GOON clan for goons, I'm sending out invites as I see them appear on the list.

So how do I get into a squad? I played a little bit just now, did the first mission, and I was just solo. It looked like right before I went in the mission the system was trying to find other people. Does it just put me into a group automatically if there's anyone else in the queue? Also, after that mission I spent my warframe/weapon's skillpoints; where do I get mods?

e: Do I need to be a founder to access their forums?

Joining in on this as Pacena

Controller seems to be an option (though a little too twitchy compared to Master PC mouse and keyboard) Add my info to the clan list.
