Yup, it's basically the best thing ever. Having golf in the "spend time with girlfriend" category is huge.

I went out and played Peachtree Golf Club today and had a similar though not quite as extreme split. I shot 80, 45 on the back, 35 on the front. We started on the back, and I hit a few bad shots to start--mostly due to nerves. I also putted really terribly; I had 4 three putts on the back, and all of them were from like 20-30 feet and not difficult.

I got a bit more settled in and turned it up on the back. The highlight was a birdie on number 7. It's the number 1 handicap and plays as a 490 yard par 4, dog leg right. I hit a beautiful power fade off the tee on a perfect line. The pin was tucked on a shelf in the back right corner. I had about 180 to the pin and hit a 7i to 20 feet. The putt went over a ridge and broke about 4-5 feet left to right. The caddy gave me a bad read (didn't give it enough break), told him it broke more, then drained the putt dead center.

On the not so bright side, I randomly shanked two approach shots for no reason. I did manage to save par on one and doubled the other.

My game wasn't exactly on today, but I made some really great progress this weekend and I think that I'll be a sub 3 handicap before winter rolls around. I'm hitting my driver and 3 wood the best that I ever have, and now my chipping and irons are really improving. The leaning into the shot issue still lurks its ugly head every now and then, but I've got it on the ropes. I have to change how I set up to the ball with my wedges because it tends to set me up with the ball too far forward and too close to my body, which is a recipe for hosel rockets.

I'm going out to play Whistling Straits in about two weeks, so I really really really want to bring my A game because I probably won't have a reason to be back up there for years--if ever.

Today I carded a +1 73 on a 6400 yard course like your girlfriend. It was my first round in two weeks, and I was still striping the ball, but the putter wasn't as cooperative. I missed an eagle putt from 10 feet, and a couple of birdie putts inside 10 feet as well. Still played some of the par 5s like a dummy. I did birdie 2 of my last 3 holes, though. I hit a PW so good on 16 that I dropped my club and spread my arms in celebration...while the ball was still in the air. It was only to 10 feet. I'm such a dillweed.

Made the turn at +2 and came in at -1. Had to make a 4 footer for par on the last to tie after JB missed a 5 footer. I gave him plenty of good reads today, and he used them all but the last one, and it cost him.

I also helped him with his driver stance. He tees the ball kinda low and in the middle of his stance. I don't offer advice unless it's asked, no matter with whom I'm playing. I had him tee it up just a little higher (the equator of the ball in line with the crown of his driver) and in line with his left armpit. He hit double his normal amount of fairways (from 28% to 56%), and he didn't lose any distance. He also plays a draw, and it didn't turn into a hook with this stance. Ball flew higher and on a much better trajectory. His phone acting up on GPS shot tracking, but I think he picked up ~10 yards.

If the weather is anything like it was last week, you're not going to want to play the following rounds. Then again if you live there you're probably used to it by now. This west coast guy who lives where a humid day is 80/40% couldn't hack playing after 1pm :)

We're teeing off at 7:39 tomorrow morning so our first round at Crooked Cat should be good. The heat/humidity doesn't really bother me anymore. Sure I go through gallons of water during the round, but, I'm used to it. It's supposed to rain tomorrow afternoon so we'll see if we get in Panther Lake.

Yeah I played Panther Lake, it's an interesting layout. I would have liked to try CC, but like I said, too hot/humid. I think a big thunderstorm came through that afternoon anyway, so I probably wouldn't have been able to finish my round in any case.

The other courses I played while I was down there were Falcon's Fire (best round of the week), Reunion/Watson (10th tee was just to the right of my condo's patio), and Grand Cypress/New (probably my favorite course in Orlando at the moment).

Edit- I bought a set of Lynx Black Cats at Golfsmith for 350 dollars because I am too impatient to wait for advice.

I played 9 holes of golf last friday with three others. Only one of us had any experience playing but we just decided up front to play from the position of the best ball. Before last week I played golf one time a decade before. I really enjoyed my time playing and actually surprised myself by hitting a few good shots with the lovely rental club driver. I am looking at picking up some clubs so that I can play 3 or 4 times a month or so.

I read the OP and looked at some of the websites that were listed. I also tried craigslist and eBay but haven't had a lot of success looking for relatively inexpensive left handed clubs. There are so many different types of clubs it's overwhelming. I see that Callaway makes a Strata series that supposedly aren't terrible but I am reluctant to buy beginner clubs because I am afraid I will outgrow them quickly. There is a Golfsmith store nearby that my brother recommended I take a look at to get some hands on time with clubs. They also supposedly offer used stuff that people either return or trade in. I'd like to pick up used clubs for 300 or so if I can. I am interested in getting the best bang for my buck and don't know the first thing about brands or styles. Can anyone give me recommendations on what I should be looking for when I head down to the store? Also, is 300 too low a price point for a set of clubs if I have no experience playing?

-edit- More info if it's helpful

I plan on taking a few group lessons to help establish a good baseline for swinging a driver, irons, and wedges.

I have no habits or preferences for anything at this point since I have no experience playing.

Brand is less important to me than getting a quality set at a good price.

I am located near Palm Springs CA.

I received a sleeve of prototype Pro V1x's from Titleist to test and played it side by side with some older Pro V1x's. If these turn out to be their next model, you can look forward to a little bit less spin off longer clubs and way too much spin with wedges. No difference around the green.

Have you tried the new Nike RZN balls? I found one and used it for almost a full round before a crow stole it :argh:. Was the first ball in a long time that I didn't need to replace after half a round due to scuffing. Really impressed with distance & control.

Talked to my local golf shop dude and he said he wasn't going to stock them because they're stupidly expensive (~$80 AUD a dozen for the best model).

Holy poo poo I'm exhausted. Got in both Crooked Cat and Panther Lake today at Orange County National. We had just about great weather. A little light rain in the morning but nothing that held up play and then it mostly cleared up and was kinda overcast the rest of the day, which worked out perfectly as it wasn't humid and probably in the low to mid 80s. Perfect weather for playing 36. We all played from what they call the championship tees, which is one set in from the Q-School tees.

I liked Crooked Cat better.

Panther Lake was def the harder of the two.

Not bad considering I've never played either before. I know I could shave at least 2-3 shots off each round if I was more familiar with the courses. Their practice facilities are top notch. Huge driving range and plenty of chipping/sand type spots that you could probably spend all day on. It was just the 3 of us and there was hardly anyone on either courses and we got in both rounds in just under 8 hours with a break for lunch in between. All in all I'd go back, it's about a 45 min to hour drive depending on traffic on i4. If it was closer it would probably be my home course as both are challenging in their own ways.

Brother got this cool shot of me teeing off into a rainbow.

And my bro, he needs some work on his game, has a wicked wicked slice he has to play. He's been playing baseball/softball all his life and just can't get rid of that swing.

Here's me and pops. He's 60 and can still drive it 250-265. He's not ready to play the senior tees yet even though it would probably shave a few strokes off his game.

That is the ball I use right now, used a combo of new V1X and 20Xi-X last season and then new RZN balls (for me) outperform both. I hated putting with the 20XI as they felt like I was using a 20 yr old TopFlight XL or something.

I also hope that the new V1's can keep wedge RPM's under 11xxx or so, excess wedge spin on high end balls is the wrong thing IMO.

You guys want a Pro Tip*, try the Titty Velocity balls. 25$ a dozen, ultra long, feel decently soft, have some spin on short irons, and last a few rounds per ball. They are, for me, the only ball that is a legit full club longer than other high-end balls while not feeling like a rock with the putter.

Also will throw in the newish Maxfli U4x balls. Stickiest golf balls ever and under 30$ / dozen.

I like using the Velocity balls on long / soft courses as it really lets me attack longer par 4's and all par 5's, but you really have get remember to club down on mid/short iron shots. My 9i normally flies 145/150 and I will fly greens 160 out when using the Velocity ball.

I took my new clubs out to the driving range and hit a bucket of balls at lunch today. I wanted to at least get a feel for them before playing 9 holes tomorrow with the guys I work with. Everyone found out I bought clubs and I didn't want to embarrass myself by completely missing the ball or something.

I think I almost hit some dudes on the 18th because my driver shots hooks/slices? (I am a lefty and the ball curves hard left) so bad. A few of them we almost 90 degrees when all was said and done. I watched a couple of youtube videos and think I might know what I am doing wrong. I tried out my other clubs and the weird thing is that I can hit longer and much straighter with my hybrids than I can with my driver.

I am considering using my 3 hybrid as a driver tomorrow morning since it hit further with it. I will spend more time on the driving range with the driver next week but right now I just want to keep a few balls on the fairway. Is my line of thinking wrong here? Should I just tough it out with the driver even though I hit like poo poo with it in the hopes that my skill improves more quickly?

Might try them, thanks. I haven't bought new golf balls in a long time. Usually I play with what I find or buy One Hit Wonders.

Read this today: http://www.golfwrx.com/244693/anthony-kim-to-earn-10-million-for-not-playing-golf/

Was just recently wondering where he disappeared to.

Anthony Kim to earn $10 million for not playing golf?

quote:

The golfer has since become a recluse. According to Golf.com’s Alan Shipnuck, his friends on Tour don’t know where he is, his handlers at IMG rarely speak to him and employees at his favorite hometown bars and clubs in Dallas haven’t seen him in forever. So where is Anthony Kim?

He reportedly took out a $10 million (or more) tax free insurance policy that financially protects him in the case of a career-ending injury. Based on financial calculations in reports, Kim would have to win $35 million in prize money throughout the remainder of his golfing career to cover the value of the insurance policy.

The goal really is to keep it in play. Drivers are pretty unforgiving and will cost you shots especially if you're not confident with it. Stick with the hybrid.

I play off 3 and personally I don't use my driver unless I'm swinging well and the hole accommodates my typical miss. The last few years I've started using irons for positioning off the tee and it's cut out a lot of wasted shots.

Bring the driver when you practice, leave it at home when you play. I didn't even take my driver with me when I went to Florida last week, and I rarely put it in my bag unless I'm playing a wide open course. I used the 3H off the tee for MONTHS when I first started.

True enough, IMO it really depends on the course setup too. If it is a muni there generally isn't TOO much trouble off the fairways, and in that case you should just hit the driver as hard as you can. You'll almost always have an out, and will have much shorter shots into the greens.

:shepface:God I fucking love Diablo 3 gold, it even paid for this shitty title:shepface:

I probably dropped my score by 5 shots per round on average this year by using my driver less often. Lately I've been using it more since I had the shaft shortened an inch and have spent time tweaking some things that keeps me from slicing unless I get really careless, but there are still plenty of holes that I never use it just because the risk isn't worth it.

The Vokey SM4 sand wedge I got used on ebay (it had some small scratches but the grooves were still pristine) has been a great purchase. I don't know if it's just mental or what but it seems to generate more spin than my Scratch gap and lob wedges even though they have more pronounced milling. Even when I hit a ball a bit thin with the sm4 the ball still tends to bounce once and stop rather than roll out over the back of the green. I hit one about 100 yards yesterday where I doubt the ball got more than 25 feet in the air and I figured I'd be off the back of the green for sure... It ended up sitting 4 feet past the pitch mark on the green, pin high. I've been intentionally leaving myself ~100 yards in on holes since I got it and I've had more short and mid length birdie putts than ever. I've been using it for chipping around the green too and being able to throw it a few feet short of the pin and stop is awesome.

Made an eagle today! 510 yard par 5. I smoked my drive and had about 198 to a front pin. Hit a perfect 4i hybrid draw to the back of the green. My putt was about 60 feet with 6-8 feet of left to right break. I hit the putt and called it in with about 20 feet to go.

Also chipped in (for par :smith:)

I bought a set of titleist 712 MBs for super cheap and hit them well. Only problem is that the guy who had them before me must have had bubba hands. They have midsize grips and probably 6-8 wraps. (For reference, I have essentially normal sized hands; I usually use regular grips with one extra wrap under the bottom hand.) My forearms were totally roasted after 18 holes. I'm gonna go get them regripped tomorrow.

Thanks man! They were back to back too, so I went from thinking oh poo poo post-eagle gently caress up to hell yeah I'm invincible golf is easy.

My Sunday round was equally absurd. I had 5 birdies and shot 83... I'm so so so close to a big drop in handicap. All I need to do is keep working on my swing change and waiting for the day that it all clicks. I've had a few sub-36 nines in the past few weeks, but I can't keep it together for 18 holes.

Most of the changes are setup related, so I feel like I'll drop a bunch of strokes when I internalize the 4 things that I have to be careful about when I set up. (The list, in case anyone's curious, is: (1) don't let the ball get too far forward in my stance; (2) have a slight hip bump towards the target to encourage secondary tilt and setting up with the left hip higher than the right hip; (3) don't crowd the ball, let the arms hang naturally; and (4) slightly open up left and right foot to avoid having weight migrate to toes during backswing and downswing.)

Putting is absurdly good right now. In my last 5 rounds, I'm at 1.67 putts per hole and 1.71 putts per GIR even though I rarely hit my approach inside 8 feet.

In brighter news, my last round in the 70s dropped off, so I'll be going from a 4.9 to a 6.9 index. I look forward to breaking into the mid to low 70s and being called a sandbagger.
