Release Date: January 15th, 2013 (Consoles); January 25th, 2013 (PC)
Consoles: PS3, Xbox 360, & PC
Developer: Ninja Theory
Publisher: Capcom

DmC Devil May Cry is the latest installment of the famous hack 'n slash series. The game features a new take on the series, most notably that it is far more dark and mean-spirited than the previous games in the series, this is largely in part due to the fact that Capcom hired Ninja Theory to make the game this time around. The gameplay is also noticeably different than previous entries and is definitely the most publicized game of the series yet, Capcom pushed this game HARD.

Story:

The game is centered around Dante, the son of the demon, Sparda and the angel, Eva. Upon giving birth to twins, the Demon Lord, Mundus, saw this as a betrayal of his trust so he killed Eva and imprisoned Sparda. After many years, Mundus is controlling the world through debt and brainwashing humans with awful television and soda. Mundus' control of the world is almost complete but there is still one loose end he worries about, one of the sons of Sparda and Eva, Dante.

In Limbo City, Dante fights demons that constantly plague his day-to-day life and over the course of his battles he runs into, the Order, a group of people fighting against the demons brainwashing society and seeking to kill the Demon Lord. The leader of the Order is Dante's long-lost brother, Vergil, asks Dante to join their cause and although Dante is suspicious of his intentions, he accepts. Aiding Dante and Vergil is Kat, a girl who is able to look into Limbo, a space where demons attack Dante and are invisible to anyone else.

Characters:

Dante is a demon-angel hybrid who lives as demon hunting vigilante. Treated as a terrorist by the officials of Limbo City he is always on the run from someone, either human or demon. He spent his childhood in orphanages run by demons which caused his rebellious and anti-social outlook on life. It's Vergil finding him that finally makes him understand that something needs to be done about the demons controlling Limbo City.

Kat is a human psychic who joined the order at a very young age. Due to this she's the right hand of the order and very dedicated to Vergil, to the point where'd she give her life for him. She functions as the eyes and ears of the order being able to see into Limbo, but when Dante shows up she is tasked with guiding him through Limbo.

Vergil is the devil-angel hybrid brother of Dante. While Dante was stuck in demon orphanages, Vergil was adopted into a rich family and raised under significantly better conditions. After becoming a multi-millionaire before getting out of school he saw the corruption that the world is suffering and used his money to fund fighting against the demons and freeing humans from their control.

Mundus, not much is known about him, other than Vergil refers to Sparda as Mundus' most trusted lieutenant as leader over the demonic forces, wresting control over 9,000 years ago. He seems to control Limbo City from a seat of power in both the demonic realm, and the human world, watching the city through the CCTV system connected to a wall of video monitors in his large office.

Weapons:

Human Weapons:

Rebellion

Dante's sword left for him by Sparda. It is able to shift into different weapons on the fly, letting Dante use multiple weapons.

Ebony and Ivory

Dante's hanguns, they are not powerful, but can be shot repeatedly without any need to reload.

Revenant

Dante's shotgun, what it lacks in speed it makes up for in power.

Kablooey

An exploding dart gun, the darts can be activated at any point Dante wants.

Angelic Weapons:

Osiris

A light and quick scythe that specializes in aerial combat, left for Dante by his mother.

Aquila

Shuriken-like weapons that move quickly and are excel at ranged combat.

Demonic Weapons

Arbiter

A slow, but powerful axe imbued with demonic power, left for Dante by his father.

Eryx

Powerful gauntlets that leave a fiery explosion on impact.

Gameplay:

If you're coming into DmC expecting the same fast-paced, stylish, and crazy gameplay the series provided you before, you're gonna be a bit disappointed. The first big gameplay difference of DmC from previous titles is the game runs at 30 FPS on consoles, however if you play the game on PC you can run the game at 60 FPS. The gameplay is still "Hit things to kill them", but the emphasis on style isn't nearly as prevalent. You can still perform lengthy combos, but switching weapons in the middle of a combo causes the combo meter to reset and in this game, increasing the combo meter gives you both an attack and speed boost.

There is no more weapons cycle, the game now has angel and demon forms, by holding down one of the two triggers, you can switch to other weapons corresponding to those forms, but even releasing the trigger a little bit returns you to human form. The game also has the inclusion of a launcher button which smacks enemies up into the air for you to perform aerial combos on, should you use it while in the air you slam the weapon to the ground.

Among the game's new inclusions is a dedicated dodge button and a new devil trigger. The new devil trigger makes Dante's hair white, increase powers, and launches all of the enemies into the air, the meter decreases less the longer you can remain in the air. Also, there is no manual lock on, all shooting is done through auto lock on.

Preorders, DLC, and other extra stuff:

FAQ

So what exactly brought this game about?

Money, as usual. DMC4 sold like gangbusters and Capcom wanted to make another one, although they ended up hiring Ninja Theory supposedly because they really liked how Heavenly Sword turned out and wanted them to develop the next title. It's also very possible that Keiji Inafune's wanting to hire more Western companies and that Capcom really wants bigger numbers influenced the decision too.

Holy poo poo, this is like the most hated game to come out in a while.

There's a lot of factors as to why exactly this game is so hated, the biggest of which is that Ninja Theory is the worst company at doing damage control. Literally after the first trailer was released, the lead art director, Tameem Antoniades acted like a complete stinkyhole to anyone who disliked the trailer. He got better throughout the build up, but only slightly and still comes off as very pompous. This is not helped with several interviews where NT harps on about how the story of the game will treat us as mature adults, they couldn't include certain features because they felt it wouldn't work within the narrative of the game and they didn't want to make any realy changes because they were set on certain things.

I am almost certain that if NT had done a better job in handling the fan outcry, the game would be received with significantly less vitriol. Although, most of the changes made story and characterwise would probably still piss off fans no matter how unimportant those things end up being in the long run.

So what are the changes that were made to stories and characters?

Dante's kind of a dick and a bit mean-spirited. Vergil is a pushover, wears pseudo-Anonymous masks and has A loving FEDORA. Mundus has a human form now and is a big businessman demon type of guy, but it's not like there was much character to Mundus before for that to honestly matter. Eva's an angel now and Sparda is still a demon, but his legend has a significantly different story to it. Instead of betraying Mundus and kicking his rear end back into hell after becoming friends with music, Sparda falls for Eva and then Mundus imprisons him because he sees it as a betrayal, the implication that Sparda is still alive is still there too, while in the original games he's gone.

Storywise, the game is a reboot, the world in general is different with the inclusion of Limbo, the demons rule the world basically, and so on.

How many missions and bosses in this game?

20 missions and 7 bosses.

This is looking like Ninja Theory's best game yet.

Definitely, but that's not saying much since Heavenly Sword is a loving atrocious hack 'n slash game and Enslaved is a bad platformer that's strength lies in Andy Serkis, the main character and the scenery. DmC is definitely looking like their best game that they've put more work into than the past two games, but it still looks overall like a poor DMC game, not as bad DMC2 of course, but still.

So what is this thread just basically to bitch about the game?

Of course not, it's meant for anyone who takes an interest in the game, even a negative one. Although I'd rather the thread not become "Let's loving bitch about DmC the thread," it's going to quite possibly be inevitable. I mean really if DMC fan just focus on the awful new stuff and act like Capcom is the devil for it then what really are we? ...WHAT ARE WE? Megaman fans.

So go ahead and enjoy talking about DmC or don't or whatever.

Noting that the addition of a taunt button that simply screams gently caress at random levels of intensity would improve this game 300%.

Bluray? Psh, like THAT will ever catch on.

Just to confirm: the word "gently caress" is indeed heavily featured in this game.

On a related note to the game, tried the demo with a friend, we were both "eh" about it and went back to DMC4 and did a Bloody Palace run with Dante to compare, and it just wasn't the same kind of fun.

Or a Blood on the Sand taunt button that just randomly talks mad poo poo about your enemies. Although to be fair every game ever could use that button.

I'm still eh on DmC after the demo...it gets better the more familiar I am with the controls, but then I go back and play DMC4 and wonder why in the hell they wanted to mess things up so much. At least the inclusion of a PC version means it should be pretty cheap during a Steam sale soon. There's no way I can see this game being even remotely worth full price.

Nice OP, SF.

Spermando posted:

What exactly is going on here?

There are three types of dodges in the game; angel, normal and demon. Angel is a dash, normal is a regular dodge roll, and demon is an attack booster if you dodge when the enemy swipes at you (think of it as a very easy Witch Time from Bayonetta).

The guy demon dodged an attack (getting an attack boost), he then did a trinity smash (ending with the axe), and managed to hit two enemies in the AOE. Now, the style ranking in this game is largely based on how much damage you do now (as opposed to the older ones basing it on variaty of combos), so the attack boost from the demon dodge X the axe (which is the most OP weapon because it does the most damage) = D to SSS in three moves.

Oh, and the SSS rank will only drop if the player gets hit. It now stays at whatever rank you get it up to.

Suffice to say, there's some balancing issue with regards to combat.

[e]: This game is so easy to bitch about, from nearly every angle. Believe me.
The only real positives are the environments.

NT's adamant about not adding manual lock-on at this point, but I wonder if adding an indicator to what Dante is currently "locked" to would help matters? Or would it make their boneheaded decision to rely solely on auto-lock even more of an obvious mistake or whatever; goddamn, who the gently caress decided on that for an action game and why? Even GoW uses lock-ons to great effect and most people consider that more casual-friendly than DMC.

SurrealityCheck
Sep 15, 2012

The lack of lockon isn't the problem. It's the lack of a lockon button. The lockon button makes certain inputs easier (think of stinger / certain launchers in bayonetta) and being forced to double tap a direction to stinger is a tad irritating. I never actually "locked on" in Bayonetta, for example, but I liked the button.

Too stylish for this world...

I'm surprised that they still called it 'Devil Trigger' since he doesn't really change appearance at all except from the hair. I'm still wondering how useful it will be in this game, in previous games you could be mid combo then trigger to increase the damage but I'm not sure if you could do that in this game without having to go into the air with all of the enemies being launched upon activation. Plus the environmental effects while it's activated don't really do it for me.

Also this isn't the first DMC game to feature auto-lock on, DMC2 also had it and that was a great game

They've actually called in Alex Garland to act as script supervisor, but they've still written this hilarious tripe themselves. And, let's face it, the guy wrote The Beach, and couldn't save Enslaved's rather inconsistant writing.

The only ones DT doesn't seem to launch are bosses. If the demo's anything to go by though, it's kinda useless and impractical otherwise, unless those robot dudes and gimp dudes don't get launched, in which case in might actually be useful if they are a threat.

“During the course of the development of Dragon's Dogma we did a lot of experimentation and happened upon some techniques for working with Unreal Engine, some fairly elaborate techniques, that allow for a controller responsiveness that gives the player the feel of 60 frames per second,” Itsuno told Eurogamer.

“So even though you have it running at 30 frames per second, you create the motions and the poses in such a way that the brain will naturally fill in what would have been the extra frames."

Itsuno said action games that run at 60 frames per second can have a tiring effect on players' eyes after a long time because the frames themselves “almost shake or flash”. Because of this, “adjusting the speed is almost necessary”.

I honestly don't get why they thought doing a Glenn Beck-esque villain was a good idea in any possible way; it's the most painfully apparent display of teenage liberal simplified conspiracy process, it's painfully out of date (outdated at the time of unveiling, and now obsolete to the point of absurdity). and when tied in with the ridiculous story about Mundus controlling the world's debt, doesn't really give any meaningful suggestion for what happens to the world when the game ends.

In case people are interested in the actual mechanical reason why the combat doesn't quite work atm - Ninja Theory have not controlled what moves and when in those moves you can cancel into and out of them, as well as doing things that didn't quite need to be done with things like juggling (the monsters are actively suspended until well into your next move, while in previous DMC games they would fall and you had to do SPECIAL MAGIX to keep them up).

This is why you get things like the weird jump cancel flying with the angel whip.

They also didn't remember to tag certain things with "only usable once per jump sequence" such as the angel whip, so you can spam it endlessly in midair, launching the enemies higher and higher and you with them with nothing other than a double tap.

This doesn't look good at all compared to DMC3 & 4 but I don't think it'll be a financial disaster. I'd venture a guess that this'll be the DMC series equivalent of Prince of Persia (2008) - a failed reboot, better looking but devoid of what made the previous games good.

It is kinda interesting to see how douchey the game designers get these days. Of course any criticism after release would be met with "we didn't stand a chance against the old guard fans" response.

It's really sad and kinda telling that after having played the demo of this and the demo of Metal Gear Rising, it's the Metal Gear Solid spinoff that moves, sounds and plays more like Devil May Cry.

The sad thing is that taken by itself, DmC isn't a bad game - it's not a trainwreck like DMC2, but it feels like an imitation that's trying way too hard without fully understanding what makes the concept work.
