This is the general chat thread for January 2013. Please bring all derails here. Thank you. It's a new year! I expect cool things from all of our Traditional Games posters. Take this as an opportunity to finish up the games you've been working on, break free from your frustrating groups, learn a new game system. The goal this year in TG is to have more threads instead of a handful of megathreads. Do you have a game you like and want to talk about, but it doesn't have a thread? Post one! Posting threads is easy and cool. Always be posting. I'll put interesting new threads in the list of links below so people will know about them. This isn't just for RPGs. TG is home to cool board and card and other games. TG rules still apply in the chat thread, please reserve your low content posting for grognards.txt Cool New January Threads TG New Year's Resolution Thread! Are you a goon with a TG related company? It's been a good start to the year. In the last three days I wrote about 12,000 words and today is on track for another 4k or so. Everybody be productive in 2013. Also in the spirit of threads for cool games I am going to revive the Castle Falkenstein thread I had a while back. That game owns.

I'm extremely grateful that I set my own schedule and can just skip a day of work otherwise there's no way I'd be willing to hit a midnight prerelease then go answer phones all day the next afternoon. Customers are bad enough, gently caress dealing with them on 2 hours of sleep.

A cross forums promotion kind of thing: If you want to get educated on Kurosawa, now is a great time to do it with the Simulwatch thread. I know a lot of people here either stick around trad games or are justifiably cautious of ADTRW but Kurosawa owns.

It seems a little silly, but now that I have a bit of disposable income I'd kind of like to get back into Magic. Kind of regretting giving away all of my cards in high school.

Now I work with a bunch of people who play magic and I'm the jackass with no cards.

Just nobody to play with (and no disposable income either actually but lets ignore that). I had the magic itch a while back so I bought a Magic: Online account. A friend got me a Jhoira avatar so we play crazy-rear end Jhoira Basic matches all the time. It is pretty darned fun. Commons are also insanely cheap so I'm making a pauper magic deck too.

There's not really room for it in the Kickstarter thread until David Sirlin does another (probably for the next edition of Yomi), but I just want to say me and my friends have been playing the hell out of Puzzle Strike, his mashup of Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo and Dominion. It's been a lot of fun and replays well, as well as being enjoyable both in duels and group games. Furthermore, it carries the distinction of being the only Kickstarter I've supported that lived up to all its promises on time (just barely, but it done it). As for Magic, I've been delighted by getting back into the Duels of the Planewalkers games. Same game, less deckbuilding pressure. I miss deckbuilding but it's too time-consuming for the amount I actually want to play the game these days.

Ninja Crusade is pretty great. "We're all ninja in this game." I agree 100% with those recommendations and will add that $9 for the Leverage RPG is loving insanity and everyone should have it and buy it for all your friends at that price.

There's been some discussion of the core Planescape box in the FATAL & Friends thread, but evidently not much beyond that. I say go nuts, because the setting which simultaneously takes about everything that makes D&D cool, stupid, and nonsensical, then tries to make sense of it while being as unlike typical D&D is possible, is a great setting.

I'm super glad the Planeswalker games exists because Magic always seemed like a cool system but with way too high a barrier to entry for me to be able to care about it. Dropping ten bucks once and then another couple for some bonus decks is a really nice model for someone on the very edge of 'possible Magic player'.

My friends and I still play Magic, but we have a rule that everybody buys the preconstructed decks and nobody starts messing with them too much. It's surprisingly fun. The decks are generally cool and effective. I do have an enormous set of Magic cards from Alpha to about Ravnica that I should get around to selling at some point.

The 'thing' about Magic is that it's both an incredible game and an incredible business model. Like, the game mechanics are solid and the devs do a consistently great job of offering up really exciting new sets year after year, but its also a huge money mill that basically requires its players to buy plenty of packs for every set (or to support the secondary singles market that eventually leads back to somebody buying boxes) that even has a metagame justification for crappy cards. So yeah, Magic video games own because hot drat it's a really well-developed TCG but also a wallet-killer. I guess I might like to see them leverage it into some kind of monthly subscription model, more like a traditional MMO, where you pay a flat fee for access to the full range of card options.

It's terrible, regarding Magic, because I've full on quit and gave all my cards away no less than three times now. Of course, I have siblings getting into it, so I have an easy place to dump my cards. I've limited myself to limited TCGs lately, though.

It's very much a product of its time - if you know Cyberpunk 2020, it's basically the same system with some extra scaling rules for mechs. It basically has no attribute balance per se (Reflex uber alles). The Mekton Techbook, which did advanced mecha generation, was crazy fun for awhile there. It's not very well balanced, but until recently there just wasn't anything better.

Brother Entropy posted:Just looked at this and noticed Mekton Zeta on sale. Anyone wanna chime in on if it's worth playing as a mecha fan? Unless you massively outclass your enemies and have a mech with low or no mobility penalty you're going to get critically hit sooner or later. There's quite a few results which will cripple you in combat to the point of uselessness, completely shut down your mech, or as mentioned, destroy it and possibly you with it. I think it started life as a squad-level wargame thing, where these are less of an issue than an RPG where you play one guy.

At the moment, no; believe me, as many games as I convince people to buy and never play, I've probably got most of y'all beat. Zereth posted:The critical hit table includes results that will instantly destroy your mech and probably kill you (almost certainly if you don't have an ejector seat thing). Counterpoint: you can make motorcycles or cars that transform into power armor.
