![]() Fire Emblem 8 is a curious entry in Intelligent Systems' flagship tactical RPG series. Released for the Gameboy Advance in 2005, it was only the second game released in the United States, and had a lot to live up to, due to the overwhelmingly positive reception of its predecessor. And so far as gameplay is concerned, I believe it improved immensely. Based heavily on Fire Emblem 2: Gaiden, the Sacred Stones added (or reintroduced) branching story paths, a world map with random encounters, optional dungeons, new character classes, and an entirely new game mode, unlockable after beating the game. In almost every way, the game either kept the gameplay from Fire Emblem 7 or added more features to it, so everyone thought it was the best thing ever, right? Well, no. You see, there are two things the game can't match Fire Emblem 7 in: difficulty and story. Rather than forcing the player along a fixed progression of levels with a steadily increasing challenge curve, the inclusion of random encounters and dungeons allows the player to gain effectively an infinite amount of experience between story chapters, removing a lot of challenge from the game. In addition, since characters have generally better stat growths in the Sacred Stones, combat is a bit easier and less risky than in Fire Emblem 7. As for the story, we'll get to it when it comes, but the plotline and characterization feel, overall, a bit weaker than the game that came before it. It's not horrendous, by any means, and there are bright points to it, but it's very generic and predictable. Not bad, per se, just dull. So why LP it? Partially because everything else has been done, and partially because I absolutely love this series. Warts and all, I still enjoy the Sacred Stones, and I feel that the lower difficulty gives the game an unfairly poor reputation. That's what got me to thinking about a way to present the game that preserves a bit of challenge but allows me to show everything off, which brings me to my next point: How will we avoid trivializing the game? First, I'll be skipping the random encounters. All experience I gain will be done in story chapters. Effectively, we'll be playing this like every other game in the series, going directly from story battle to story battle, with no stops in between. To that end, I'll also be saving the dungeons for post-game, but rest assured, I will be showing them off. Since the plot of the game does change somewhat depending on which story path we take, I'll be doing two runs of the game, going down one path on Normal and down the other on Hard, showing off all the differences between the two difficulties along the way. Audience Participation? Absolutely. Part of the fun of Fire Emblem LP's is letting the thread decide who the dream team will be, so I will be having votes on team selection, as well as which path to take at the appropriate time. I will be forcing certain teammates in, mostly to show new members off, but the majority of the team will be thread-selected. Spoiler rules?![]() I'd say that it's fine to discuss spoilers if they're behind tags, but I'd like to keep it mostly relevant to what's happening in the LP. For instance, not talking about the events of Chapter 15 when we're only on Chapter 2. Gameplay features don't have to be tagged, since most people already know how Fire Emblem works, but any discussion of characters or plot we haven't seen yet should be tagged. Just use your common sense. Fair warning to veterans of the series, I will be going over a basic explanation of how the game works, so a lot of the information in the first few updates may be eye-rollingly obvious. You have been warned. I also highly recommend that people check out other LP's of the games in the series. Those are: Fire Emblem 1: Dark Dragon and the Sword of Light (by DKII) Fire Emblem Gaiden (by Hafl) Fire Emblem 4: Geneology of the Holy War (by Wind God Sety) Fire Emblem 5: Thracia 776 (by Cake Attack) Fire Emblem 6: Sword of Seals (by Artix74) Fire Emblem 7: Blazing Sword (also by Artix74) Fire Emblem 9: Path of Radiance (by Fedule) Fire Emblem 10: Radiant Dawn (also by Fedule) Fire Emblem 11: Shadow Dragon (by TenaCrane, requires archives) Fire Emblem 12: Heroes of Light and Shadow (also by TenaCrane) Some of these are still being developed, and others are probably in the process of being archived, so I'll change the links when appropriate. Prologue: The Fall of Renais Our story begins like most great tales: with multiple screens of text. ![]() Creatures awash in the dark ride ran wild, pushing mankind to the brink of annihilation. In its despair, mankind appealed to the heavens, and from a blinding light came hope. ![]() These five glorious treasures held the power to dispel evil. The hero Grado and his warriors used the Sacred Stones to combat evil's darkness. They defeated the Demon King and sealed his soul away within the stones. With the darkness imprisoned, peace returned to Magvel. ![]() ![]() For some 800 Years, a quiet peace reigned in the absence of the terrible darkness. The Sacred Stones have been passed from generation to generation. Nations have been built around their power and their legacy. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And finally... ![]() These five countries house the power of the Sacred Stones. ![]() (Lord Klimt isn't important enough to be mentioned by name, apparently) In times of peace, tales of the past conflict have drifted into legend, and memories of the ancient dark arts have all but evaporated. ![]() In an instant, the whole of Magvel is threatened by an unexpected atrocity. The Grado Empire, the largest of the Sacred Stones nations, has invaded the kingdom of Renais under orders from Emperor Vigarde. ![]() Grado's forces move quickly, seizing one territory after another ![]() Grado's momentum carries its armies to the gates of Castle Renais itself. ![]() ![]() Every chapter will have an opening narration before the title card. Rest assured that none of them will be nearly as long in the future. ![]() Inside Renais Castle, a soldier comes to speak to the king. ![]() : The castle gate has been breached. Emperor Vigarde's forces are within the castle walls. : I understand. : The garrison has fallen. We've lost contact with Prince Ephraim and can expect no aid from his men. Your majesty, what are we to do? : ...What else can we do? Order your men to lay down their arms.![]() : Eirika. Are you wearing the bracelet I gave you? : Yes, I have it right here. : Good. : Seth.![]() : Take Eirika and head for Frelia. King Hayden is an honorable man. I trust he will keep you safe. : Understood. And what of Your Majesty? : Me? I shall remain here. We have long held Grado among our dearest allies, yet now, they attack? I must know why. Am I somehow responsible for this? Have I erred in my leadership? Renais is mine to guide...How could I have failed her so? : Father, you can't stay! You mustn't! If you remain behind, then so shall I! : Go now, Seth! Ride! Take her to safety! : Father! : Forgive me, your highness.![]() ![]() : Ephraim, Eirika... You must survive.![]() Of course, Seth and a fellow knight don't take two steps from the castle gates before they start talking. ![]() : Franz, ride ahead and bring word of our coming to Frelia. A single rider has better odds of passing unseen by Grado's men. Convey to the throne all that has happened here and petition for reinforcements. : U-understood! *leaves* : Princess Eirika, we must-- : Quickly! Behind me!![]() Ladies and gentlemen, get ready to meet the second-most obnoxious character in the game. : Well, this must be my lucky day. You're a dead man. The wench goes with me. : Never!And...fight scene. : And you’re just a corpse who does not know he is dead.![]() : Ahhh... No!For reasons I'll explain later, this fight scene is just stupid, and it won't be the last time this happens either. The game really wants to make Valter seem better than he is. ![]() Regardless, at least Seth knows when to run. : Such terrible wounds, and still he holds to his duty? How entertaining. Fly away, little man. Fly away. Try to outrun death. More time to savor the hunt... and the kill.![]() An indeterminate period of time later... : Princess Eirika! This way! I can see no more of Grado's men. If we've made it this far, we've surely earned a moment's rest. Please forgive my grabbing you so... brusquely earlier. : Don't be foolish, Seth. If it weren’t for you, I would never have made it out of the castle. You are the reason I'm still alive. You have my gratitude. And who ever that man was, he was clearly after me... It's my fault that you received such a grave wound. Allow me to treat it, I-- : Your highness, I can't allow an injury like this to be an obstacle. We have more important matters to attend to. We must press on to Frelia. We must fulfill His Majesty's wishes. :... I wonder how my father fares alone in the castle. Do you think he's safe? And what of my brother on the Grado front? We've heard nothing from him for days. : King Fado and Prince Ephraim are both valiant and brave men. I doubt even the might of the Grado Empire can hold them in check. More important to me, Your Highness, is that you look to your own safety. How sad the two of them would be if something were to happen to you. We must reach Frelia to ensure the day of your happy reunion. : Yes, of course. You're right. Until I'm reunited with my father and brother, I must not despair. Come, Seth. Let us go.![]() : Your highness, I won't lie to you. This will not be an easy ride. Please, take this rapier. If something should happen to me, you must continue to Frelia, alone if need be.![]() And Eirika has a weapon now. Fortunate too, because at that moment... ![]() Company arrives. ![]() : Grado's men. Stand back, Princess Eirika. : It's all right, Seth. My brother has taught me something of swordplay. I will stand with you.![]() And five minutes into the game, we finally get to do our very first fight. About freakin' time. Turn 1 Since this map is fairly short, let's take a moment now to go over the basics of this game's combat system. First, the stats. ![]() Our protagonist Eirika, in typical Fire Emblem fashion, is both fairly weak and made out of tissue paper. This presents a minor problem, because if she dies, the game's over instantly, what with the whole permanent death thing. Did I mention that characters are dead permanently if they die in this game? That's an important thing to remember. From the top: Strength determines attack damage, Skill increases chances to hit and score critical hits, Speed increases a character's chances of dodging attacks, Luck increases hit chance, dodge chance, and lowers the critical rate of an attacking enemy, and finally, Defense and Resistance lower damage from physical and magical attacks, respectively. On the side, Move determines how many spaces a character can travel, and Constitution measures how heavy a weapon a character can carry before he or she takes a Speed penalty. Every point of weight an equipped weapon has above a character's Constitution lowers Speed by one. Eirika's Constitution is quite puny, barely enough to lift her Rapier without any penalty, and it's one of the lightest swords in the game. Now, her wingman, on the other hand... ![]() Despite appearing to be level 1 as well, Seth's stats are much better across the board. That's because he's actually a promoted class, a paladin, capable of equipping both swords and lances. Characters of Seth's ilk are known by fans either as a Jeigan or an Oifay, after two high-level support characters from Fire Emblems 1 and 4, respectively. Jeigan types are powerful in the first few chapters in which they appear, but drop in usefulness quickly when enemies become too strong for them to fight. Jeigans are nuisances at best, sucking up experience which lower-level characters could be using instead, or at worst, they're liabilities. The Oifay type, the category in which Seth belongs, is different. Due to high initial stats, strong stat growths, or a combination of both, these sorts of characters start out useful and remain just as useful, more-or-less, if used regularly. If Seth remains a permanent fixture of the team, we will have a lot of leeway in the battles ahead. And speaking of leeway: ![]() Even compared to Eirika, the two Fighters accompanying the boss of this level are complete chumps. All they really have going for them is strength and defense. ![]() As for the big man himself, O'Neill has a lot more speed, at the expense of defense. He's still too weak to do anything to Seth, and shouldn't be too big a threat to Eirika either, so long as we approach him cautiously. ![]() The first thing I do in this fight is hand over Seth's weapons to Eirika, thereby disarming him. A peculiar thing to do, I suppose, but I have my reasons. ![]() Then I move Eirika over so that only one enemy can face her in this narrow pass, and I end turn. ![]() Obligingly, the fighter in front engages Eirika, and we have our first real combat of the day. ![]() In Fire Emblem's combat system, the person who started the battle attacks first, and then the other combatant, if able, gets a free counterattack. Damage is a sum of the attacker's Strength stat and their weapon's damage, minus the defender's Defense stat. In this man's case, his Strength was 5, an iron axe does 8, and Eirika's defense was 3, which comes out to...10? Oh yes, there's also the Weapon Triangle. Swords beat Axes, which beat Lances, which beat Swords. When a character has a Weapon Triangle advantage, they gain 1 damage, while the combatant with the disadvantage loses 1. In addition, they also gain or lose 15% on their chance to hit, which, combined with the generally low accuracy of axes, meant that the Fighter was only attacking with a 39% chance to hit (well, not exactly, but that's a discussion for another time). You might have also noticed that Eirika hit twice on that exchange. That's because, if a character's speed exceeds his or her opponent's speed by four or more, they get another attack in a fight. ![]() Following the fight, Eirika gained some experience. It takes 100 experience points to gain a level, and the experience scales depending on the level of the attacker compared to the target. This is why it's a bad idea to send Seth against these guys, since the game adds 20 levels to his number for being a promoted class, meaning that he'd get almost nothing for fighting them. Turn 2 ![]() Observe the number to the side of Eirika's Rapier. That's the weapon's durability. Every time you hit an enemy, it goes down by one until the weapon runs out of uses and breaks. The Rapier starts with 40 durability, so we won't have to worry about that just yet, but it is something to consider for the future. ![]() When we select an enemy, the game will show us exactly what will happen in a confrontation. Notice the number at the bottom of the blue side. That 14% represents Eirika's chance to land a critical hit. This is mostly due to her Rapier, which grants a 10% critical rate, and the remaining 4% is because of her Skill, divided by two. Not helping matters is that the Fighter has absolutely 0 Luck, so he has no way to decrease Eirika's chance of a critical hit. ![]() How unfortunate. Critical hits multiply the damage shown by three, which means that the Fighter just took 21 damage, more than enough to take him out. ![]() What I'm doing next is completely pointless. You see, while we don't want Seth to actually kill these Fighters, his Defense makes him an effective roadblock. My original plan was, if Eirika got hit while killing the first Fighter, Seth would move in front and block the other Fighter from trying to finish her off. Since he traded away his weapons to Eirika, Seth wouldn't counter the Fighter, and Eirika could heal up and engage the Fighter next turn. ![]() That said, I don't even know what I was thinking at this point. Vulneraries heal 10 HP a pop, but only have three uses. I suppose I figured that, since Seth still had his injury from the story battle with Valter, I'd be better safe than sorry. A good thought, except... ![]() Two damage. That's all the Fighter did to Seth. He could have been guzzling Drano and he'd still have survived this fight easily. Turn 3 ![]() For a little extra protection, Eirika slips past Seth to engage the Fighter from a forest space. While standing in a forest area, characters gain 1 Defense and 20 Avoid, making those spaces ideal for characters to hide in. In this circumstance, the Fighter would have only had a 21% chance to hit. ![]() Although, given that Eirika critted again, that's purely academic. ![]() : What was that? Do you think you can take me, wretched lording? Come! It's time you high-and-mighty knights learned to respect a true warrior!![]() On the enemy phase, O'Neill moves forward to attack Eirika. Not a wise move, but the Fire Emblem AI will almost always attack someone if they can. ![]() Now, O'Neill is fast enough so that Eirika can't double him, but since she's still in the forest space, she should be able to dodge his attacks and whittle him down in 2 or 3 turns. ![]() Or she can just crit him. That works too. ![]() Just not your day, man. ![]() Killing O'Neill gave Eirika enough experience to have her first level up of the game. In Fire Emblem, stat gains are not static upon leveling. Instead, characters have a certain percentage chance of raising their stats one point, known as growth rates. What that means is that a character's development is entirely up to the whims of a random, and oftentimes quite cruel, random number generator. ![]() As you'll see at the end of this update, Eirika's weakest growths are in Defense and Resistance, Which makes that point of Resistance somewhat of a surprise. Resistance blocks magic damage, which we won't have to worry about for a while, but it's always good to have it, just in case. ![]() : What? Oh, no... I'm fine, Seth. : But you look so pale... : I'm fine... Fine. ...This is war, isn't it? It's not at all like the games I used to play with my brother or Lyon. I never thought-- I didn’t know it would be this...savage. Are words useless? Is strength all that matters? It's so sad... Why would the Grado Empire do this? To what end would they start a war? : Princess... : ...Don't worry, Seth. I won't give in to sorrow . Let's get moving. I'm not broken, and I won't stop until I see Renais restored. I won't stop until I'm reunited with my father and brother.Next Time: We meet the game's most annoying character in Chapter 1: Escape Extras ![]() Eirika Class: Lord Weapon Ranks: E in Swords Affinity: Light HP: 16 (70%) Lck: 5 (60%) Str: 4 (40%) Def: 3 (30%) Skl: 8 (60%) Res: 1 (30%) Spd: 9 (60%) Con: 5 As the game's protagonist, Eirika needs, more than anyone, to do well in her stat growths. Fortunately, she'll have a lot of levels to grow into, since she starts at level 1, and her unique weapon, the Rapier, is light, decently strong for this part of the game, has a sizable crit rate, and has one last aspect to it that has yet to be revealed. Until she gains a few levels, however, it's best to avoid having her get into any fight where she can't score the kill in the first hit, since she can't afford to take any damage herself. ![]() Seth Class: Paladin Weapon Ranks: A in Swords, A in Lances Affinity: Anima HP: 30 (90%) Lck: 13 (25%) Str: 14 (50%) Def: 11 (40%) Skl: 13 (45%) Res: 8 (30%) Spd: 12 (45%) Con: 11 As mentioned before, Seth is an Oifay type of "crutch" character. If he were a Jeigan, most of those growths would be somewhere around 10%. No joke. Instead, he's got a coin flip's chance of gaining strength, skill, and speed every level, and perhaps some defense and resistance too if he's lucky. Just be sure to save him for fighting people around his own level, otherwise he'll be wasting valuable experience due to his promoted nature. Think of him as the nuclear option, which you call in whenever you need something steamrolled in a hurry. I've heard of people soloing this game with Seth, and that honestly doesn't sound too far-fetched. He's just that good. Blastinus fucked around with this message at Jan 8, 2013 around 20:36 |

I secretly love this game for how stupidly overpowered you can be by the endgame/postgame. After how much trouble I had with FE7 playing this game was really cathartic.

Don't worry, I'm pretty good at finishing what I start. I've already got the next chapter recorded and I only need to put it together, and I'm alternating save slots so I won't lose too much if a recording goes south. That said, I do enjoy this game quite a bit, so it won't be too much of a bother if I have to redo a good chunk of the game.

Playing this game on hard without the tower is actually a lot of fun, and so I'll always defend it no matter how much flak it gets (not that it gets beat on too much, but people generally rate it pretty low.) Anyway, looking forward to this.

![]() Remember how I said that all chapters start with a short narration? Well, this one is an exception. It's really more of a continuation from the last chapter than a new chapter all in itself. ![]() At the border fortress of Mulan that stands between Renais and Frelia, Grado's forces are approaching. ![]() : What? So soon? Ah, we've had no time! : Milady, we lack the arms to defend this place. You must return to Castle Frelia. : I can't! Not yet. We haven’t found Eirika and her companions yet. Eirika is my friend, and she needs my help. I won't abandon her. ![]() : Yes, Your Highness! *leaves*It's lines like these that make me really dislike Tana. I think they're trying to make her seem somewhat ditzy, but it gets a little ridiculous sometimes. : Eirika, please be safe.![]() : Hmph. They're tenacious, but they have no hope of stopping our advance. : What are your orders, sir? : Ha! Orders? You just stand here and watch. I'll crush them myself! : As you command, sir.![]() ![]() : Ha! That's what happens when you face my lance!...Yeah. I could see him hitting, maybe, but scoring a hit and a crit with those numbers? What are the odds? : Call off your forces and turn back, or you'll have me to deal with! : Is that so? And who might you be? : Who--? I am Tana, Princess of Frelia. I will not permit you to abuse my country any longer. : Frelia's royal brat, huh? How convenient... : Leave this castle immediately. If you harm me, my father and brother will chase you to the earth's end. : Yes, I've heard of how King Hayden dotes on his precious little daughter. Let's see how true that is. You’ll make us a fine hostage, my dear. Seize the girl and lock her up!![]() : No! Let me go!Oh yeah, and there's also the damsel-in-distressing. That stuff gets old fast. ![]() ![]() : I see it. It seems like Grado's army has already reached Frelia. Princess, this place is perilous. We should bypass Mulan altogether and head straight to the castle. : But we can't just ignore this... You were there when Renais was invaded... You saw what I saw. You saw how the people suffered at the hands of Grado's soldiers. Homes were destroyed, possessions stolen, women kidnapped... Anyone who resisted was executed without question, without hesitation. : ... : Please, Seth. I can't allow that to happen here. I don't want to see any more people harmed by Grado's atrocities. : All right, Princess. I understand. Perhaps we can retake Mulan. But, Princess, you must act with caution. Your people need you, too. : Of course, Seth. Come on! Let's go!![]() And here we go! Compared to last chapter, that took hardly any time at all. Our objective for this map is to Seize the gate to Mulan. To do that, we need to have Eirika stand on the space that Breguet's occupying and use the Seize command. Since bosses don't move in a Seize map, that also means that we'll have to get rid of Brequet too. Sounds easy enough. But first, we've got two new unit types here, so let's have a look-see. ![]() Soldiers are almost universally cannon fodder. Their stats are terrible, they can only equip lances, and their constitution is often so low that anything above an iron lance actually slows them down even more. ![]() Breguet, meanwhile, is your typical Knight, all strength and defense and not much else. If we had a magician of some kind, we could take advantage of his low resistance and circumvent the defense entirely, but we don't, and we won't get one this map either, so we'll have to take him out some other way. Turn 1 ![]() That soldier north of Seth doesn't move this turn, but my memory of the map was a bit fuzzy, so I had Eirika hide behind him anyway, under the assumption that the fighter would also be going for her. : Ha ha! It really is my lucky day! Fame and fortune ride to meet me! Move on, you slugs! Bring that girl to me!![]() The fighter seemed to think that whiffing a strike on a weaponless Seth was more important than striking Eirika. It's like how in Advance Wars (another wonderful game by Intelligent Systems), the AI had a peculiar fascination for destroying APC's, despite their lack of relative worth. Turn 2 ![]() Turn 2 starts with a pleasant surprise: reinforcements! ![]() : Aye, we have. Her Highness Princess Tana should be inside the castle. : But look -- the countryside is crawling with Grado soldiers! Where's the castle guard! Has Mulan fallen? Are we too late? : Too tough to say from here. Princess Tana's in no danger if they want her as a bargaining tool. We men of the Eastern Watch will see her to safety. : Yes...Yes, of course. We mustn't give up. We must move. We must retake the castle. Then, we ride forth to Princess Eirika's aid. : I've stronger armor then you do. I'll take the lead. Watch my back. And just like that, our army has doubled in size. While most new allies will require some action on our part to recruit, sometimes the game just throws them at you. ![]() Fairly solid bases for a level 1 character too. Franz is a cavalier, a first-tier paladin, which means that he's got 19 more levels than Seth to develop his stats. Quite a lot of potential here for the young lad, assuming he actually gains anything. You'll see when I show you his growths. ![]() Gilliam, meanwhile, is better than Breguet pretty much across the board. His main weakness is that low amount of move, since it means that he'll lag behind everyone else in most maps. ![]() First things first, Gilliam and Franz go to work on the soldier they start next to. Gilliam's not fast enough to double anyone on this map, so he'll be taking a lot of hits. But that's okay. That's what his high defense is here for. ![]() You might notice that I'm having Franz use a sword against a lance. That's completely intentional. You'll see. Besides, Franz killed him anyway. ![]() Eirika's in a dangerous spot, but I have her soften up a fighter anyway. Don't worry about the strange blurry mess trying to smash her head in. The sprite animations use a lot of stretching shots to show sharp movements. It's really quite fascinating to watch frame-by-frame. ![]() Let's talk about rescuing. In short, if a character's constitution is higher than another character's constitution, he or she can carry the character, keeping him or her out of harm's way. If a character's riding a horse, they also get a bonus to their constitution for purposes of rescuing someone. On the negative side, rescuing someone does cut Seth's speed and skill in half while he does it, so he'll need to get out of danger too. ![]() Fortunately, he's got a trick up his sleeve. Mounted characters are ideal for rescuing because they get to use their movement points even after doing an action. This is true for trading and talking as well, but for some reason, the GBA games all didn't let mounted units move after attacking, even though you could do that in the SNES games. Kind of a weird restriction, since, as I mentioned, you can move after doing every other action. ![]() Carnage on the enemy phase, but it could be worse. Both fighters went for Gilliam, giving him some hard knocks, and one of the soldiers made a try for Franz, but got wasted. The AI in the series will tend to go for a Weapon Triangle advantage whenever possible, so that's why I had Franz use the sword, so that the two guys with axes would target Gilliam instead. If everyone had ganged up on Franz, things would have been much messier. Turn 3 ![]() When our turn finally rolls around, Franz has an easy win on the lone fighter who survived the last round. ![]() Meanwhile, Gilliam borrows one of Franz's vulneraries and uses it. Characters can trade and use items on the same turn, a convenient fact for exactly this sort of scenario. ![]() Finally, Seth uses the natural cover of Franz and Gilliam to drop Eirika safely behind them. I'm babying her perhaps a little much this mission, but she has a very important responsibility. ![]() Not much to report on the enemy phase. The last fighter and soldier went for their specific targets and Franz gained a level out of it. ![]() Anything with strength, speed, or defense in it is fine by me. Turn 4 ![]() Working together, Franz, Gilliam, and Eirika take out the last units, all without a scratch. All that's left is the boss, right? ![]() Not quite. You see, when I moved up to defeat those enemies, I crossed an invisible vertical line, and that triggered reinforcements. Fortunately, FE7 established a precedent where enemy reinforcements would arrive at the end of their turn, not the start, so you won't have any cases where four dudes jump out of a castle and smash your weakest unit without warning. Turn 5 ![]() Those are some terrible hit odds, aren't they? Obviously, part of the issue is that I'm using swords versus lances, but a bigger problem is the gate itself. It provides 3 defense and 30 avoid to whoever's standing in it. Breguet's slow enough that it doesn't matter too much, but when we encounter some of the faster enemies, this may present a problem. Anyway, remember how I said that Eirika was needed for this fight? You see, one aspect that the Rapier shares across all games in the series is that it is "effective" against mounted units or armored units like knights (and if we'd visited one of the houses on this map, we'd have learned the same). What effectiveness does is it multiplies the weapon's damage by three. Not the total damage, only the weapon's damage. That's why we've only barely got enough power there to finish him, assuming we hit both times. : Bah, what a worthless lot of curs I've been assigned!![]() : This...this can't be... I...And we do. Boy, I'm lucky. ![]() See? Nothing but luck. Whacking enough things with her Rapier also increased Eirika's sword skill from E to D. If she wasn't worried about the weight of it tanking her speed, she could equip Seth's steel sword now. Turn 6 ![]() On the other side, Franz is taking cover in a fort. In addition to a very generous 2 defense and 20 avoid, forts also heal 20% of a unit's health if they start a turn standing in one. With that kind of protection, Franz and Gilliam are easily able to mop up the reinforcements. ![]() Gilliam gets a sweet level out of the deal too. Speed is rare on a knight, and every little bit helps. Anyway, with nothing else to do, I seize and finish, and the game immediately apologizes for giving us a brief and concise introduction at the start of the chapter. ![]() : Sir Gilliam... I’m sorry, I never meant to cause you such trouble. : It was no trouble. I live to serve, Princess. : Tana! : ...Eirika?!? Is that really you? : Tana, what are you doing, so far form Castle Frelia? : I heard that Renais had fallen, and I was so worried... But I'm glad to see that you're safe... Wait! Where is Ephraim? Is he well? : I wish I knew. : You haven't heard from him? Oh, I hope he's not been harmed... Come, we must go to Castle Frelia. My lord father may know something. : Thank you, Tana.Segue to a pointless narration sequence. Alongside Princess Tana of Frelia, they ride to the Frelian capital. : You've no idea how I worried when I heard you were under attack at Border Mulan. You are not to leave again without my permission. Do you understand? : Don't be mad, Father. Look, I come bearing good news. Eirika! Come out now! : King Hayden, I am pleased to see you again, even in these sad times. : Ah, Eirika! It does my heart good to see you safe. : Thank you. I was able to escape the castle before Renais fell. But I'm not sure if my father... : Yes. I... have received word of your father. : Your Highness? Please tell me. Is my father well?![]() : ...No, it cannot be... : ... : Rest assured, Grado will be punished for its cowardly act. This is Frelia's promise. Eirika, please stay here and rest. I cannot imagine how exhausted you must be. : ... : King Hayden. You know of Prince Ephraim's disappearance, do you not? : Yes, we hear the prince and his men hound Grado at every turn. It's said that he's led his forces into the empire itself. Reports suggest he's crossed the border and now fights in Renvall. : My brother... He fights on? Even now? : Yes. My pegasus knights bought this information at a great price. Even though Renais has fallen, he charges into the enemy's heart. He is truly Fado's son... What a valiant youth. I wish I knew whether he remains unharmed, but I do not. : King Hayden, I thank you for your offer, but I cannot stay. I intend to ride to my brother's side with reinforcements. : I cannot allow it. I know how you feel, but this plan is suicide. I would be betraying Fado's memory if I allowed any harm to befall you. Stay here. Rest and mourn. Leave this war to the warriors. : I know you mean well, Your Majesty. However, I have lost my father, and my twin brother is in peril. My brother, he is a part of me... I cannot rest here in peace while he risks his life. : No. Renais has no more army. Grado's forces decimated it. I wish Frelia could provide you with support, with soldiers, but... My son, Innes, is on his way to meet the empire's forces. We cannot spare a single brigade. Your own retinue of knights cannot possibly face Grado alone. Are you so determined to go? : Yes. ...With apologies. : ...As resolute as your father, eh? What am I to do in the face of such foolhardy determination? : Vanessa.![]() : Moulder.![]() : Gilliam. : Yes, sire? : You are to accompany Princess Eirika of Renais into Grado territory. I expect each of you to provide aid and support for her brother. : Hmm. Quite a grave responsibility you've given us. : No matter the obstacles, we will perform our duty. : Our lives are yours. : These are some of my most trusted and stalwart vassals. They will, no doubt, prove themselves quite valuable on your journey. Remember, you are venturing behind enemy lines. You will need supplies. I will have a supply convoy readied to carry your weapons and provisions. It will remain at your side, no matter how far afield you venture. : King Hayden, I... Thank you. : No, save your thanks for your return... with your brother, Prince Ephraim. : Yes, Your highness!![]() Nice! Two new units, a nice bit of starting cash, and a "supply caravan." We'll see how that last one factors into things next time, but first, one last scene. ![]() : I can't guess how you must feel, but it's just too dangerous. What would happen if you were captured by Grado's men? : Thank you for your concern, Tana. But I have no choice. Don't you see, Tana? I have to go. : Eirika... Oh, why is this happening? What's gone wrong with the world? : Tana... : Why would Grado invade? Emperor Vigarde is a man of peace. His people adore him. And you and Ephraim are friends with Prince Lyon, are you not? What could be behind this madness? Why is this happening... : I have no answers for you, Tana. I don't want to believe it, but the reality is that we are at war. If I do nothing, I may lose my brother as well as my father. This is why I have to fight. It's the only answer I have.Next time: We expand the roster even further with Chapter 2: The Protected Extras ![]() Franz Class: Cavalier Weapon Ranks: E in Swords, D in Lances Affinity: Light HP: 20 (80%) Lck: 2 (40%) Str: 7 (40%) Def: 6 (25%) Skl: 5 (40%) Res: 1 (20%) Spd: 7 (50%) Con: 9 It has to be somewhat embarrassing when the character who starts out promoted has superior growths in almost every stat. In terms of sheer growth, Seth beats Franz easily, and it might be tempting to just say goodbye to the kid early and try someone else. I still like to give Franz a chance, just due to his low level, but those puny defensive growths make it risky to cart him around after a while. If he doesn't perform well, there are other cavaliers ready and willing to take his place down the line, so for his own sake, he had better keep the good levels coming. ![]() Gilliam Class: Knight Weapon Ranks: C in Lances Affinity: Thunder HP: 25 (90%) Lck: 3 (30%) Str: 9 (45%) Def: 9 (55%) Skl: 6 (35%) Res: 3 (20%) Spd: 3 (30%) Con: 14 Gilliam may not be the fastest guy around, but he's good at what you need him to do, and that's plugging chokepoints. Put him between you and the enemy, and he'll take a ridiculous amount of punishment and keep going. His only potential replacement will likely be weaker and less sturdy, even if he or she has more speed, so it'll really be a matter of taste at that point. Bonus Conversations I didn't capture it when I played the level, but Franz has some unique conversations with Eirika and Seth if you have him go next to either of them. With Eirika: : Princess Eirika, it is good to see you're well. : Franz, you made it through unscathed... : Y-yes, Your Highness! I met up with Sir Gilliam of Frelia and explained the situation in Renais. He told me that Princess Tana was in danger as well, here at Mulan. We rode as swiftly as we could. : Tana is here? Franz, we must hurry! : Understood! With Seth: : Is that you, Franz? I'm relieved to see you're still in one piece! : Y-yes... and you as well, General. As long as you lead us, sir, the Knights of Renais cannot lose! : Franz, you and I must work together to protect Princess Eirika. I want you to ride with us. : Sir! With honor, sir!And finally: ![]() In memory of King Fado, who really should have gotten the heck out of Dodge when he had the chance. Well, this looks to be a good quality LP so far! Top-notch explanations. I'm a huge fan of FE8, to the point where it's the only entry in the series I've really replayed. Not using the tower will be quite a feat for this though, given some of the characters the thread might decide to saddle you with.Tana is not the most annoying character, though. Not by a long shot. Looking forward to this, I'm guessing you'll be taking votes on which route to do on Normal/Hard? I do disagree on your story-comments, GBA FEs don't exactly have the best stories anyway, so I prefer FE8's coherent if simple story over FE7's. I'm playing through SS now as well after way too much FE12 lately, and I've been really missing siege tomes. So of course the game give me an Eclipse in my one run through the tower while I manage to gently caress up grabbing the Purge in the main story, and since FE8, like most FEs, doesn't really have any good and easy to get dark users (Knoll is pretty bad and can easily get RNG-screwed - his highest stat at 20 was 14 for me - and Ewan requires you to use a trainee AND give up on Sages unless you use Saleh or for some reason make Lute a Sage) I have 3 siege tomes and can only use one.

You might be thinking about FE7, where gates were only 2/20, but they scaled it up, for whatever reason.

I'll show it off when we get to it, but it's honestly not worth it, even so. But Ewan can use Dark from your first play-through anyway, and is already better as Druid than Super Pupil - in fact, Druid is technically his best class stat-wise, giving him better Con, Mag and Speed on average - the drawback is Light > Dark (especially with his mediocre skill) which is nice for Sages, but given there are several good/solid light-users and no other passable dark-users, he's still better off as Druid IMO - it just means you need to use a trainee and possibly miss out on Sages entirely. Meanwhile Super Pupil gives him +15 crit, which is nice, but he loses staves (huge), 3 con (huge) and 3 average speed - not nearly worth it IMO, especially since healers get kind of screwed this game (Natasha's growths are mediocre, L'Arachel joins fairly late at level 1, Moulder's sadly pretty bad, and healing doesn't give nearly enough XP to get them to decent levels without farming) so at least 2 of Ewan/Lute/Artur are almost invaluable for healing. Anyway, we should probably hold off on this discussion until it becomes relevant or we'll have black bars everywhere. Insurrectionist fucked around with this message at Jan 8, 2013 around 17:15 |

Just stating for the record that I am going to vote Gilliam every time. Because he is Wolverine in heavy plate armor. And that is cool. This game does have some very good music later on. It's certainly behind pretty much the rest of the series in overall quality, but it has its gems.

Honestly, I've never liked Gilliam. It seems like in almost every run I make of the game, Seth turns out to be a better tank, plus having all the benefits of being a paladin, to say nothing of how the second possible knight makes a hilariously effective general. Or Franz for that matter, because Seth is basically a Franz that is already promoted. Basically what I'm saying is that Seth is probably the best unit in the game.
