Maybe someone here who knows more about Jones can explain this to me, but I'm curious, what is Alex Jones's explanation as to why he hasn't just been disappeared for exposing the Illuminati or whoever.

I'm always amazed at just how well-known this guy has become over the years. One of my friends is an orthodox nun who lives in a secluded monastery out in the Greek mountains and even she has heard of him. I guess it's hard to be on the internet for very long without running into this guy at some point.

I used to go to Austin Community College, and a long time ago Alex Jones was a student of one of the teachers I had there. He said that Jones was always pretty loud in class and was really into UFO conspiracies back then. It would seem he hasn't changed much. I used to listen to him on the radio when I lived in Austin and I always had a hard time telling if he was really genuinely insane or just putting on an act. I think it's probably a mixture of both.

All hail the new flesh!

I've mentioned this in other Alex Jones threads here, but it really is my favorite AJ story:

When Deus Ex was released there was a lot of rumors that Warren Spector drew inspirations for the conspiracies in the game from listening to Alex Jones (along with the obvious X-Files and Art Bell). The game was basically the nightmare scenario of false-flag operations and one-world-government martial law that Alex loved to rant about.

However, when Alex was given a copy he apparently only played up until the scene where Walter Simons, the evil director of FEMA, interrogates a captured NSF "terrorist". This is the point in the game where it becomes clear that the player is working for the bad guys and needs to reconsider his allegiances and start helping in the war against tyranny and oppression and all that jazz.

Alex apparently stopped playing right here (after shooting the NSF detainee himself in the game) and concocted in his own mind what the real story of Deus Ex was.

On his show the next day he declared that Deus Ex was the creation of the Central Intelligence Agency, designed to desensitize children to violence, kidnapping, and torture, and intended to prepare a generation of obedient military thugs to diligently round up innocent civilians, toss them into death camps, and then casually and without hesitation shooting them in the face. In Alex's assessment this game would serve the purpose of preparing American youth to be either complacent to or active participants in the coming global holocaust.

Alex spent more time ranting about this game than he did playing it. Not only did he not play the rest of the game before bloviating, he didn't even attempt to research his story. (Keep in mind, at this time he still claimed to be a "journalist".) Deus Ex was written and produced in Austin. Ion Storm's office was located less than 5 miles from the KLBJ studios. With a phone call he probably could have interviewed every single person involved in the creation of the game. He could have gone to their office, said "Hi, I'm Alex Jones" and gotten a tour.

Instead he just let his paranoid delusional imagination write its own reality and then opened his mouth. It was awe inspiring.

Or he's a media huckster who just latched on to the sensational narrative of the time (video games training people to be killers - he brought it up along with pills in the Morgan interview). Why promote something that you aren't going to make money from?

Of course this leads to the that Deus Ex is frighteningly prescient.

There is more to it, though. Kevin Booth (who along with Bill Hicks started Sacred Cow Productions, specializing in conspiracy theory videos) produces a lot of Alex Jones's videos. Also, claims that there are no photos of Alex Jones before Hick's death in 1994, their similar mannerisms and outbursts (Wake up, people!), the fact that Alex looked way older than his early 20's in the mid-90's, and the fact that Bill Hicks died from cancer...just like Andy Kaufman who also totally faked his own death.

It's all bullshit, but Alex's fans aren't really known for their fact-checking.

The narrative never gets that far. It is pretty much 24/7 "I'm going to be killed!", "They are after me! I saw them on the way here!" or "I could die any day!" so he can tell his audience he is the real deal and is risking his life to get the information out.

He also gathers a lot of guest that his audience can readily associate with. Pretty much every time he begins by propping up their credentials and presents them as an authority on the subject then proceeds to endorse their views and fits them into his NWO/conspiracy narrative while pushing their product. He also rallies his base to do his advertising for him by telling them to go do poo poo, donate to poo poo, buy poo poo and spread the word and so on. I think it's just the result of networking and setting up infrastructure (as McDowwell mentioned) over 13? years he's been doing the show. He's on the DrudgeReport right now, and has been +180 times according to ThinkProgress. He's also on the frontpage of CNN and Politco. It all just builds up over the years, I guess.

This is especially interesting because it predates 9/11 and the Iraq invasion.

This really seems to suggest that part of Jones' funding comes from groups that want to stifle dissent by making it ridiculous. It's a pretty effective technique to turn the political spectrum into democrat/republican/Alex Jones.

People like Chomsky never get a second of airtime in commercial media today, while Jones gets his fifteen minutes to rant and rave.

Austin person here. I've listened to a lot of Alex Jones. This is very much right. He's fairly accessible and flatters his own viewers. He makes people think they're really important, that they're heroes fighting absolute evil, and that this is The Most Important Thing You Will Hear.

It's also a different thing listening to him during a 15 second clip when he's absolutely freaking out, and listening to him for an hour. He's on the radio three hours every single goddamn day, and like Hitler, the fly-off-the-handles loco stuff is only part of a bigger package.

Videodrome posted:

The thing is, it's not clear what Alex Jones wants to happen after the oppressed sheeple open their eyes and rise up against our evil overlords. This is why you can't ascribe a particular ideology to him. He was just as anti-Bush as he is anti-Obama. He literally condemns ALL world leaders and governments. Does this make him an anarchist? But he doesn't really talk about anything post-uprising, so I have no idea if he expects an utopian anarchy, or his own personal dictatorship, or just a biblical Armageddon followed by the second coming and god's rule on Earth.
This is where he's at a dead-end, ideology-wise. His conclusion is that the world is controlled by sorcerers who practice black magic, and the solution is to "wake up." Which isn't a political program. But then again, he can have a coherent ideology and not be a political leader per se, like Charles Coughlin or Glenn Beck.

Is he an anarchist? No. He's an extreme nationalist, for sure. He condemns all governments around the world because he hates internationalism and foreigners. The world and the elites are threats to American national sovereignty. And the traitors/globalists/elites in our own country need to be summarily killed and replaced by a revolutionary regime that hearkens back to the nation's origin in 1776. I have to say that nationalism, a very extreme form of it, is just as predominant in his thinking as the conspiracy stuff. Maybe even more.

I would call it a very particularly modern American form of fascism. I also suspect his listeners share a similar class basis (dispossessed lower-middle class whites mainly). His ideology is anti-socialist, anti-liberal, anti-conservative and anti-elitist, while also being a revolutionary kind of right-wingism. We tend to focus on the loco conspiracy stuff, but he's promoting an ideology that'd fit right into the mouth of Willis Carto.
