I think this just turned out to be a muscle strain. Being unconscious probably keeps you loose. It was definitely horrifying at the time though, I remember being at a bar while I watched it and they showed it about ten times in slow-mo. The whole place groaned every time.

For any WWE guys reading this thread, a sprawl is a way of defending a takedown. By dropping your hips low and legs back it prevents your opponent from pulling in your legs and completing the takedown. Here's Mayhem Miller sprawling all over Sakuraba. In the gif above, Jardine is sprawling on a ghost.

If you don't sprawl, well...
