The Maloofs are finalizing an agreement to sell the Sacramento Kings to a Seattle-based group led by Chris Hansen, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports (via Twitter). According to Wojnarowski, the Kings are expected to be sold for about $500MM, with the Seattle group seeking to relocate the team to the KeyArena for the 2013/14 season.

The deadline for NBA teams to file for relocation for the following season is March 1st, so there's plenty of time to petition the league. According to Wojnarowski (via Twitter), the Seattle group hopes to play two seasons in the KeyArena, starting in '13/14, before making the transition into the new arena, whose progress has been approved so far by Seattle City Council.

Daina Falk, the daughter of agent David Falk, had tweeted early this morning that the Kings were being sold to Hansen's group, which includes Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, but later deleted the tweet. A Kings official had since denied that there was any truth to the rumor, according to a Sacramento Bee report. While no agreement has been signed yet, a source describes the deal to Wojnarowski as "first and goal at the one" .

Most likely, yes. The Sonics brand was quintessentially Seattle.

Seattle retained the rights to Sonics name when they moved to OKC. The history would supposedly be shared between OKC and the new Seattle team should they choose to adopt the Supersonics name.

Yeah, I agree. It feels hypocritical for Seattle fans to be excited about this when we're doing the exact same thing that happened to us in 2008 to Sacramento fans. It's tough to support this.

Not really, Seattle still fits in with the Pacific division geographically. No moves make any sense, other than maybe swapping Portland and Seattle

Geographically the easiest thing would be to move Seattle back into the NW, put San Antonio or Houston in the Pacific, and put OKC in the displaced Texas' team place.

I feel your pain Kings fans. Obviously we know it better than most. But I'm still psyched as hell to get basketball back in Seattle. Especially doing it on our terms, with mostly private funding, rather than capitulating to the league like we would have had to in 2007.

Realistically what they'll do is move the Lakers to the Lakers Division, OKC/LAC/HOU to the Marketable Division, everyone else in the West to the D-League.

This is the exact same way that Sacramento got the Kings from Kansas City in the first place: an out of town ownership group comes in and buys out a team that's playing in an outdated arena in front of a dwindling fan base. It sucks for the city, but it's not nearly the tragedy that moving the Cleveland Browns was. It's business. I don't hold any ill will toward Seattle fans and I hope that the team does well up there without the broke-rear end loving Maloofs.
