Steve Ballmer is worth $15.7 billion. I think he'll be the one coughing up the money for this.

Considering the Nordstrom family is also involved in the ownership group alongside a number of venture capital/early tech boom sort of people it's safe to assume the Seattle group can outspend Sacramento handily. The real question is if this is truly a purchase of the heart (like it's been advertised as) or if it's intended to rapidly become profitable.

Hansen has openly stated he's not interested in setting up the group or managing the acquisition of an NHL team, so I actually believe him when he says he's just a local basketball dork who made good and wants to both be a hometown hero for bringing back the Sonics and also achieve a longstanding goal of owning a team.

Bennett, Stern and the Maloofs have been mentioned but I feel like adding 'gently caress Schultz' is necessary.

In this case I don't think they are at all, since the new sonics are gonna sell out forever because people will be afraid they'll leave again otherwise.

What? How is that a counterpoint?

Basketball in Seattle is going to do well because people here like basketball, but we arent going to sell out forever. If the team sucks (or worse gets stuck on the mediocrity treadmill) attendance will waver. However these scenarios dont matter because the team will be profitable and we have ballin rear end billionaires locking this poo poo down.

Not to mention the huge city/urban planning thats going on in Seattle right now. Amazon itself is basically making its own neighborhood and South Seattle near the stadiums is getting redeveloped as well. If the new sonics stadium is also located downtown there's going to be huge gentrification of the surrounding areas. Seattle has a juge ntro population and a bunch of rich folks, Sonics will be fine.

loving so stoked right now.

Is contraction of teams ever going to happen?

My joke was that the Maloofs professed to both love basketball and wanted to make a profit on the Kings, but ended up using the team to secure cheap credit for their family empire which ended up being patterned like a low-rent Trump enterprises with shades of Real Housewives of Orange County. Consider:

Now the Kings offer a substantially different customer experience than the playoff contenders they were in the early 00s.

I'm guessing you don't really know the circumstances of the Sonics sale but suffice it to say:

1. Howard Schultz is a loving coward who tried to treat professional athletes like his baristas and bailed on the team after he alienated the fanbase.

2. Clay Bennett had David Stern's blessing to come in and move the Sonics to OKC.

We were honestly and truly jobbed, and there simply was not a window for an alternative ownership group or arena plan to come together. Stern made sure of that. Now that he's retiring, he wants to cement his legacy and now it's time for all of us to forget how he literally brokered our team away in a backroom deal.

KJ said that any new ownership group would have a local presence, but a big chunk of money could come from outside the area. I wonder if he's hinting that guy from the Philippines is in play.

It sounds like KJ was caught a bit off-guard with this but he's been in contact with potential buyers so he's not completely flat footed

The Maloofs owe $219M to the NBA according to @largesteve.

The new news is that the offer from Hansen/Ballmer is only around $350 with the extra absorbing those loans (which would have to happen). A local buyer would get a restructuring of the Sac City loan, and I'm almost certain that if a major player actually steps up to keep the team in Sacramento that the NBA loan can be restructured.

Also, this is absolutely a move on the Maloofs part to start a bidding war.

That $219M number has to be wrong. Has to be. Why would the league let the Maloofs borrow $150M? Either that or the Maloofs monkeyed around with the Kings and Palms books and hope no one would notice, but even they can't be that dumb.

One story of Schultz's cheapness is famous among his former staff. The Sonics' previous owner, Barry Ackerley, had bought holiday gifts each year for the folks in the front office. When Schultz's group took over, the custom died. Rightly or wrongly, some of the employees groused that no gesture had been made to them. According to an employee at the time, another of the team's new owners, Richard Tait, the co-creator of Cranium, heard about the complaints and subsequently gave out copies of his popular board game. Not to be outdone, Schultz followed suit. He gave each employee a Starbucks gift card. One member of the staff—who wasn't a Starbucks regular—decided to use his card to get some snacks. When he went to pay for his roughly five dollars' worth of food, he asked how much money remained on the card.

"Well, you owe me money," the cashier said.

The Sonics employee asked how much had been on the card to begin with.

"$3.50," the barista replied.

At the time, we would later learn, ordinary customers couldn't buy a Starbucks card with a value of less than $5. These were custom $3.50 gift cards.

What's really funny is they actually moved from San Diego to an arena much more run down, that the Lakers thought was not appropriate for basketball like a decade earlier (and instead of mopping up water spots it wasn't uncommon for the ball boys to have to mop up pigeon poo poo). And they never really matched the success they had in San Diego until they gravy trained their way into Staples.

Personally I just think it would be better for California and the NBA in general if the Clippers moved to Anaheim or San Diego but Sterling makes money whether the team is good or bad in Staples so I doubt that will ever happen.
