The Chargers are having a bad enough time that they're the perpetual candidate for relocation to LA. SD is a really odd city. It's an area filled with a lot of transient residents and much of the big money is people who own houses in places like La Jolla that they live in for a few months out of the year while they spend the rest of their time back on the east coast. It's really hard to get people like that to throw $ down for luxury boxes, season tickets, etc. when they already have them for their hometown teams.

Maloof is an idiot in basketball, but a bunch of companies that do nothing but run casinos took on as much water as he did or more. The only ones that didn't are either being saved by massive Macau profits, or were too busy re-organizing and missed the timing of the condo construction bubble. I can't believe anyone can think the Maloofs aren't anything but terrible businessmen. Less than a year ago they managed to secure the rights (somehow!) to grace their arena's exterior with the name of a magic bracelet company. This is the least dumb thing a Maloof has done in the last 5 years. During the heyday of the Kings they were absolutely loaded from Daddy's fortune. Less than a decade later they have failed at so many investments and ventures that they are left, essentially, with the Kings as their only real asset. Blinkman987 posted:No, I didn't know. That's pretty loving bizarre. To be fair, the Sonics leaving was a combined effort. Schultz is a cheap rear end in a top hat and Bennett certainly was not honest with his intentions, but Schultz had been trying to get the arena updated (it was the league's smallest) and Seattle politicians had basically told him to gently caress off and didn't think he had the guts to move them. Now, I honestly think Schultz sold them assuming that they would stay in Seattle and the new ownership would have more leverage because they weren't as tied to Seattle as he was. That was pretty dumb on his part. It will be interesting to see how much $$ Seattle spends on getting the new team and the arena they are promised.

Also, Atlanta's full of transplants willing to root for other teams. I remember a Knicks-Hawks game a couple of years a go where Amare got deafening MVP chants. I wish the Nets would have moved since nobody cared when they were in Jersey, but it's too late for that. They could expand to Sacramento and Kansas City (who have been dying for a team for their newish arena), but that's wishful thinking.

The Maloofs failures in business have been well chronicled. They sold their cash-cow liquor distribution company which they father built. They did it in a futile effort to keep their head above water. They didn't sell it to finance their condo project, they did it to keep up with their loan payments after the market had already crashed and they lost a shitload of money and the writing was on the wall. Not exactly a good business decision. Yes, lots of other people lost money in condos in Vegas, but that doesn't make it a good business decision. They've had other failed ventures too. Are you aware that they've had a music label and production studio?! Because that's what the business world needed more of. Now they are pushing something else there isn't enough of in the world, a boutique vodka. They got completely hosed on the naming rights to their stadium. They signed an agreement with Power Balance after they already got sued in Australia for selling fraud products. By the time the company declared bankruptcy, the Maloofs only got a fraction of the money they were supposed to from the company. And do to their fine business sense and legal ability, they were not eligible for financial restitution from PB's bankruptcy. I don't recall the numbers off the top of my head, but I believe they received $700k in total for the naming rights. They claimed that taking down all the PB signage would cost $200k. The Maloofs used to pay full price for beverages (to serve at the arena) because they were operating without a deal in place with Pepsi or Coke because they were making too many ridiculous demands. No discounts or anything. They choose to eat the costs in order to protect the image of the brand or some poo poo like that.
